The second winter since Naoe's 'death' approached...
The battles of Yami Sengoku grew more intense by the day, Ougi Takaya was the same as two years ago, spending his days dashing all over the place to exorcise onshou. Once there was a disturbance, he would immediately rush to the scene and employ his powers of exorcism to settle it. He had continued with this sort of life all along.

After the events of Itsukushima, there had not been many changes to his body.
Ougi Takaya was the same as the day he woke up at Hiroshima.
He staunchly believed that Kotarou, the leader of the Fuuma ningun, was 'Naoe Nobutsuna'. This circumstance did not end. Takaya believed Fuuma Kotarou to be Naoe Nobutsuna, never doubting his identity as 'Naoe' and seemed to treat Naoe like how he used to.
There was no sorrow and no feeling of loss either. Naoe's 'death' was not recorded in Takaya's history. To Takaya, 'Naoe's' current existence was real. This was his reality.

--When I awaken, you would definitely be by my side...

Thereafter, Chiaki and the rest had verified the way Takaya remembered the succeeding events at Itsukushima. At the end of their examination, it seemed as though he had treated the entire incident at Itsukushima as a 'dream'.
However Takaya acknowledged the events surrounding the 'Yamato', the 'manju' and 'kanju', as well as the fight with Nobunaga as 'reality'. Using words like 'Perhaps' to describe the incidents in a somewhat strange manner, they could not find a suitable explanation for Takaya's understanding of other matters despite his eccentricity.

At certain parts, Takaya's replies were extremely bizarre.
The obvious ones were his answers to questions about the incidents that took place at Hagi city.

--I met Naoe at Hagi city.

Takaya had answered in this way. Chiaki and the others had continued to interrogate about Naoe's situation after that, Takaya had reminisced for a while, then revealed an incomprehensible smiling expression and answered in this way.

--I don't know...

--You don't remember?

Questioned in this way, Takaya had laughed awkwardly.

--...Naoe has always been with me.

Takaya replied in this way, as if nothing had happened. Yet he knew that he had worked together with Chiaki and Kotarou at the Suigun Castle. He also acknowledged that, at that time, Naoe had not been with him.

As for Ujiyasu, when queried on when Ujiyasu had begun to follow him, Takaya had repeated the answer, "I don't know". In this way, everything related to Naoe's death had been warped, Takaya had slanted his head whenever he replied, without any seriousness, as though he was suffering from dementia. He was incapable of placing the events that had taken place in correct order.

The scene where Naoe had been shot had completely disappeared from his memories.
Apart from this, he also had a few 'dreams'. He had mentioned that in a 'dream', he met his father Ujiyasu, who had taken the form of a dragon, at a coastal area. But according to Kotarou's statement, that was an actual occurrence, it was after Naoe had died at Hagi city, when Kotarou had taken Takaya to the Susa district.

In short, it caused one to become frustrated, Takaya was completely unclear with matters regarding those particular events. Although he knew the overall picture, Takaya would give the wrong reply or vaguely avoid the question when asked about the finer details or anything that was unfavorable to him. Even when Chiaki and the rest had persistently pointed out details that were contradictory and continued with further questions, Takaya would only reiterate his ambiguous answers.

Takaya had become strange.

"Be more precise!"

Even when admonished in this way, Takaya still would not answer. He did not feel peculiar about his inability to answer at all.
Besides this, everything else was normal.
What was the reason behind his obscure grasp of the chain of events surrounding Naoe's death? Despite being uncertain about the events, Takaya did not seem to be bothered by it, why was that? Was this a result of his fierce conviction?
Takaya was unaware of his own abnormalities. For this reason, Takaya had 'become strange'. Takaya had been together with 'Naoe' throughout the entire time. He had concealed Naoe's death in the chest of dreams, and lived in an artificial reality that he had weaved at will.

***

"How are your injuries?"

After returning to the hotel room, Takaya sat on the sofa by the window and looked outside. It was two o'clock in the morning.
Kotarou had asked him the question. Takaya had been depressed from moments ago. He had not said a single word in the car. Apparently, it was because he had caused injury to the hyouza during the fight.

"..."

Kotarou considered his condition and made some hot coffee for Takaya. Kotarou poured a cupful of coffee and handed it to Takaya.

"Please drink this."

"..."

Takaya finally turned his head towards him. Despite having been silent all this while, once he smelt a whiff of coffee, he seemed more calm, he opened his mouth to reply.

"Thanks..."

"Are your injuries all right?"

"...Nothing too serious. Just a bruise, that's all. I could've gotten this while taking a bath, but it can't be helped."

"It seems like the matter was smoothly concluded."

"..."

Takaya's expression became grim. He still had not fully recovered from the attack. Furthermore, he was responsible for the hyouza's serious wounds, he continued to condemn himself for his blunder. This could hardly be considered a smooth conclusion.

"...the worst time..." Takaya said, biting his lower lip. "It shouldn't be this way. That person ought to have been saved..."

"..."

"I killed him..."

Takaya's fists were on his knees, he was clenching his fists so tightly that his fingernails nearly punctured the flesh. He was extremely unsettled, he gnashed his teeth in anger as he stared out the window like a ferocious hound.

"Why did things turn out this way... This period of time has been strange... Like my hand just slipped all of a sudden, within that split second I couldn't control my incantations. Why is this so? How did this situation come about..."

"..."

"...I was the one... who killed him..."

His fists trembled. Takaya, unable to bear it, fiercely pounded his fist on the table. Kotarou did not seem affected at all, he only watched Takaya with an indifferent expression in his eyes.

"Is it related to your fatigue? For you to lose control of your spells, sometimes it may be caused by your inability to concentrate your spirit."

Takaya's shoulders shook, he looked at Kotarou with a nervous expression.

"That was an unlucky hyouza. His death is something that cannot be undone. It was his misfortune to have been possessed by Narimori."

"Something that cannot be undone? Misfortune?" Takaya looked up indignantly. "This isn't a problem that can be explained with this sort of talk, is it? I killed a person, this very night! With these two hands! A person that should have been saved...! This isn't a question of my slip, at that time my powers...!"

"It was also that person's destiny to become the sacrifice of that conflict. This is not something worthy of your vacillation."

"Destiny...!"

"Correct. Even though we strive for the best, those who will die, will die. It is a disadvantage to blame oneself for their deaths. Reflect over how to redeem oneself and turn it into a tool that would be advantageous to oneself, that is the proper way. It is unreasonable to be restrained by an irretrievable matter, furthermore, it would only incur more harm."

"...!"

Takaya kicked the chair uncontrollably as he stood up.

"What do you mean by advantage! It shouldn't be this way right? Naoe. A person's life or death can't be discussed in that way as if it were money or goods. This talk of disadvantage, do you regard life and death on the same level as a commodity?"

"Even if one were to consider a person's life and death as a commodity, it is not unreasonable to do so. There is no moral code attached to a person's life and death. It is the people who lived in the age of the forgotten wars that saw death as such a serious matter. They are only thinking that, if they did not regard death as a grave subject, they would be unable to fit into society. In this era, this so-called conscience has spread rampantly. Life and death is held in such serious regard only because they have allowed their conscience to control expression of opinion."

"!"

Takaya's anger soared even more.

"What sort of rubbish are you talking about! You don't understand anything at all!"

"You obviously have not given this any thought, you are only wearing an all-knowing appearance. Besides the people that are directly related to you, the death of others are of no interest to you."

"What are you trying to say... That this is hypocrisy?"

Takaya stared at Kotarou, who was expressionless like steel, with the strength of his entire body.

"What kind of joke is this... what kind of joke is this! Don't bullshit me! You don't understand one bit of my frame of mind!"

"Kagetora-sama. Please calm down."

"You don't understand at all! If you understood where I was coming from, you wouldn't say this sort of things!"

After shouting loudly in this way, Takaya's shoulders unexpectedly began to tremble in shock. "Is it because... you understand?"

Kotarou felt slightly confounded and widened his eyes. "...Kagetora... sama...?"

"Is that why you speak in this way? Saying this sort of words, what do you expect from me? Are you so happy to see me in this state? Does talking to me so coldly give you so much pleasure? What are you trying to pull? No matter how I call you, you only turn a blind eye. Does disregarding my existence give you so much joy? Completely detaching yourself from me, alienating yourself from me, ignoring me, does that make you so happy! When did you turn into this sort of person!"

Kotarou fell into a state of stupefaction. Takaya's indignation was further aroused.

"Is this revenge? Vengeance against me...! By deliberately disregarding my feelings, by always keeping away from me! Is this your retaliation for having been bound by me for 400 years! Or...!"

"..."

Takaya amazingly recovered himself. Was that the reason his last sentence was abruptly shortened? Kotarou's face had become pale, he had stiffened entirely.
Takaya had swallowed the final half of that incomplete sentence. He breathed deeply, wanting to calm down.

"...Sorry. I was too loud. What's wrong with me? Don't mind me. I was a little agitated..."

"Kagetora-sama." Kotarou voiced out. "Are you tired? Do not say anymore, it would be better to get some rest."

"...No,...no need, it's okay..."

"You look pale. Do lie down. Fatigue of the body and mind can affect the concentration of your strength, it would be detrimental in a fight. Sleep is absolutely essential. I shall retire immediately. I shall wait for you in the hall tomorrow morning."

"..."

Takaya did not answer. Seeing him in this way, Kotarou gave up on his wait for an answer. He asked to be excused and wanted to leave. Then, at that moment, Takaya suddenly muttered.

"Why..."

Kotarou turned back. Takaya's lowered face appeared as if he was about to cry, startling Kotarou. But he did not cry at all. Takaya was desperately restraining the anxiety in his heart.

"Why? I don't understand..."

Kotarou could not grasp the meaning of Takaya's words. His face grew taut. "Did I do something impolite?"

When he asked in this way, Takaya felt even more remorseful and bit his lip. After a period of silence, Takaya forcefully restored his serene expression as though he wanted to strangle all of his emotions that were swelling within him.

"Kagetora-sama."

For the first time, Kotarou, who was always composed, now revealed an uneasy expression.

"Does your wound hurt? Or..."

Takaya remained silent. Kotarou could not fathom the reason for Takaya's agitation. Even though he understood that Takaya behaved in this way due to his [Kotarou] own words and manner, he could not comprehend what he [Kotarou] had done wrong.

"Kagetora-sama?"

Takaya closed his eyes in grief, he turned his back towards Kotarou. Despite doing this, he nevertheless concentrated all of his senses on Kotarou's every movement.

No matter how long Kotarou waited, Takaya still did not show any signs of movement that he [Kotarou] expected. Kotarou merely stood there dumbly, gazing at Takaya's back.

After a period of silence, Takaya uttered. "Naoe..."

"..."

"Isn't there... something you want to say to me..."

"Something I want to say to you..." Kotarou was puzzled, he wrinkled his brow. Takaya turned around, and repeated the question.

"Isn't there something you want to tell me?"

"Kagetora-sama. I do not understand what you are saying..."

"You do! You have something to say to me! You must say it now! You must do it now! Something that no other person can do apart from you!"

Kotarou's face stiffened as he wavered. He did not understand the meaning of this at all. Kotarou's failure to understand him, even at this point, peaked Takaya's temper.

"..."

Takaya stared at Kotarou, he stood up from the chair once again, grabbed the lapels of his shirt, and with his right hand he pulled open his clothes in one breath.

"...!"

The buttons flew out, his skin from the right shoulder to the chest was exposed. The wounds from the previous battle were miserable to look at. Takaya compelled Kotarou with a low voice.

"You still don't understand?"

Kotarou, having witnessed Takaya's shocking action, only stared at him tongue-tied.

"...Kagetora-sama..."

"--Isn't there something you should to do to me?" Takaya asked with an earnest expression in his eyes, as though he was forcing Kotarou to look at his wounds. "Do you want to abandon me now that I've ended up like this? Without doing anything, you just want to leave like that? It isn't right, is it? It shouldn't be like that right!"

"..."

"You...!"

His words broke off, Takaya could not continue to speak, he only frowned at Kotarou with a look that conveyed everything on his mind.
But regardless of his understanding of the situation, Kotarou did not show any hints of movement.

Takaya unknowingly bit his lip again, he wrapped his arms around his own body. "You... don't have any interest in me anymore?"

"Interest..."

"--There... isn't anything... you want to do to me?"

"...Kagetora-sama..."

"There's nothing... you want to do to this body..."

Kotarou gazed at Takaya. Takaya breathed calmly as he waited. Kotarou could not grasp the meaning of Takaya's words.

Takaya closed his eyes, as if he had given up hope. "... Forget it."

He wore his shirt again. Kotarou was still standing there dumbstruck. Takaya walked past him and opened the closet to obtain a change of clothes. Takaya had already restored a rational appearance.

"You can retire for the night. Tomorrow morning at eight, wait at the dining lounge. Report the results of the investigation and we'll also have a meeting then. Pass the message to Haruie and the others."

"Understood."

Although he felt somewhat uneasy, Kotarou resumed his usual emotionless facade of an iron mask and nodded, he bowed with a courteous 'If you would excuse me' and left the room.
Once the door closed, Takaya drew back his fringe, pressing his fingers against his forehead.

Why...

At present, Takaya could not understand 'Naoe'.
Takaya could not acquire his passion. He had always been naturally able to obtain this object. Now, however he sought for it, he could not find it. No matter how much he anticipated, he could not get it. Takaya was like a hungry and thirsty child, desperately burning for it.

Why...

Was it deliberate? Could this be retaliation?

Because of the continuous suffering he had caused him [Naoe] for 400 years...

Or...

Was Naoe not aware of what Takaya desired? Given that he was aware of it, was he deliberating holding back? But if he knew, there should be some response.

I don't understand you...

Don't understand at all, I feel like I'm about to go insane.

Takaya felt some difficulty in breathing, he closed his eyes.
An intense migraine raided his temples again. Takaya pressed against his forehead. He did not understand the reason behind the recent increase in frequency of this ache. As though it was some kind of warning. The feeling of a certain alarm ringing...

Calm down...

Takaya thought in this way by himself.

Be quiet, please...

In his mind, something flashed past. A red coloration like blood, a physical body dyed in blood, a scene that caused one to feel that it would be extremely dangerous if one were to examine it carefully, flickering within the storm of the ache.

Calm down...

Takaya used both of his hands to press against his head, he crouched down.

"..."

Outside the door, Kotarou was still standing there at the exit, gazing at the room.
A slight, agonized expression appeared on the distinct outline of that face that normally would not bear any emotion.

***

"Got the hyouza hurt? Kagetora?" Hearing this from Chiaki, Ayako could not help but frown with her rhetorical question.

"That's right. That idiot couldn't completely control his powers again. He released an unnecessary amount of incantations that inflicted severe wounds on the hyouza. By the looks of it, that hyouza won't make it."

"But wasn't he cured? Didn't Kagetora say that everything was okay?"

Chiaki gnawed his tongue with a 'Tsk'.

"He wasn't okay at all. Look. As a result of this, he killed someone. So was he waiting until someone was sacrificed before he would acknowledge his strange condition? That stinking brat."

Chiaki said, fiercely stepping on the gas. Ayako had a profound look on her face, her line of sight stayed on the meter board.

It was true. Takaya had lost control of his powers, and this was not the first time.
The signs had begun to show two to three months ago. While fighting with some onryou, Takaya had experienced this several times. Even so, it was not the case of not being able to release incantations. The situation was the exact opposite. Even though it was only for a short moment, Takaya's powers would slip out of his grasp, deviate from Takaya's will and overflow, followed by a loss of control.

Previously, when he had fought with the Mikumo clan near the river, the situation had been the same. It was during the fight on the banks of the Yashuu river when he had used the 'Nen Nami', Takaya had been dueling with an onryou called Mikumo Sadamochi, formerly a retainer of the Rokkaku clan. At that time, he had also lost control of his incantations whilst in battle and nearly destroyed the entire riverbank. Fortunately, Chiaki had hurried there midway to stop him, thus damage was minimal.

Even if his condition was not as conspicuous, this predicament, which caused one to break out in cold sweat, happened frequently. It was like a group of vehicles traveling together that suddenly lost control and skidded all over the place. Detached from his own will, and occurring without any warning, his powers would slip from his control and act without authorization.

Because he did not want the others to be aware of it, Takaya strove to show that nothing was wrong, but he still could not hide it from Chiaki. After realizing his unusual state, Chiaki and Ayako had demanded the stubborn Takaya to undergo recuperation, and had placed him under observation for a period of time. Since there were no signs of it worsening at the moment, in order to stabilize his powers, Chiaki carried out hypnotherapy on him.

"But why is this happening? He's obviously not the sort of person to lose control of his incantations. Seems like it's not related to fatigue."

Ayako could not understand the reason for his condition at all. Chiaki stared ahead through windscreen of the car, he answered in a low voice.

"It's because he's forcing himself to live."

Ayako was startled, she looked at Chiaki. "Forcing..."

"Yeah... Living in that 'loathsome nature of escape'."

Chiaki glared ahead with a frightening expression.

"Not wanting to acknowledge Naoe's death, he allowed himself to go mad. If he wants to believe that brat Kotarou to be Naoe, fine. But he is not Naoe. It's impossible for him to be like Naoe... Even for Kagetora, he can't continue to believe that man to be Naoe when he obviously isn't."

"What do you mean by that?"

"He's pressuring himself."

Chiaki stepped on the brake as he reached the red traffic light, he took the cigarette from his mouth and extinguished it in the ashtray. "If he continues to fool himself in this way, it would soon become a burden to his being. A considerably large burden."

"Burden...?"

"Yeah. Why do you think he can accept Kotarou, who has a different appearance, voice and smell, as Naoe? He has warped the information received by his five senses to suit the shape of his own thoughts. Only Kotarou's information that is. His spirit had already set preferences, it started during that time."

Ayako stared at Chiaki.

"The point is, it's too forceful. It will become a burden for sure."

"So Kagetora has become weakened because of this? He can't control his powers because of this condition?"

"That brat Kotarou probably knew this from the start. He had probably decided to ease Kagetora as much as possible because of the burden he brought upon himself, as a result of his self-hypnosis." Chiaki sighed.

"Are you talking about the way he imitates Naoe?"

"Yeah."

"It's seriously amazing. The manner of his speech, even the way his voice is projected, including his movements and habits... I never expected he would be able to imitate him to that extent. He scared me quite a few times. I thought Naoe was really there..."

"That's probably the so-called 'Art of Simulation'. It's one of the techniques of ninjutsu. He truly deserves to be the leader of the Fuuma."

It was true. Kotarou had shocked Chiaki and Ayako the other day. After Takaya had called him by the name of 'Naoe', Kotarou had begun to act the part of Naoe. From the tone of his speech to his movements, he had adjusted his being to conform with the mannerisms of Naoe, which had startled Chiaki and Ayako.

"He's probably doing this to lighten Kagetora's burden. Although this honestly isn't like that brat to show solicitude or benevolence. But if Kotarou didn't do this, that brat Kagetora would definitely be in more pain than now."

"That's true. But... how long can he continue to deceive him?"

"Exactly, because the other is Kagetora."

Furthermore, they had walked together for 400 years. The man who was inseparable from him, Kagetora knew Naoe better than anybody else.
Kagetora was more sensitive to Naoe than any other person. More than anyone else in this world, Kagetora was the one individual who was most perceptive of the differences between Naoe and other people, he could instinctively tell the difference.
For this reason, it was exceedingly difficult to deceive Kagetora.
It goes without saying that he should have seen through it from the start.

"If not for his own self-hypnosis."

"He deliberately made himself slow-witted."

"Even if he felt something was different, we can't say for sure that he did forcefully constrain his emotions... It must be painful though. He's definitely coercing himself somewhere."

Without a doubt, his yearning for Naoe would cause him harm. He was more knowledgeable of Naoe than anybody else, that was the largest hindrance to the artificial reality he was living in.
But it was Kagetora's attachment to Naoe that brought about this condition, that caused him to do this sort of thing...

"But this isn't the only reason for Kagetora's weakening spirit."

"What do you mean?"

"Half of it is the neurosis." Chiaki said painfully, turning the steering wheel to the right.

"However the outside appearance changes, the personality won't change. See, just like when we possess, our appearances and voices change, but what's inside doesn't. Naoe is Naoe, it's not his appearance or voice that makes him who he is. Every word, every sentence that comes out of his mouth, his every action and movement makes this person 'Naoe'... Seeing and hearing all that, we then recognize this person to be 'Naoe'. Correct? If people who haven't been in contact for that long can distinguish one another, what more for us who have known him for so long. Much more than the external appearance, we're aware of each other's deeper personalities. It's because of this that we feel 'Naoe' to be 'Naoe'."

"Then Kagetora..." Ayako said with a vague voice.

Chiaki tapped his forefinger on the steering wheel and uttered.

"He's strangling himself. Kagetora has felt confused all this while. Believing that Naoe has stopped behaving like Naoe because he has ceased to be faithful or is mocking him. He's always thinking of this superfluous matter. In the end, he has become filled with mistrust of Naoe."

"..."

"This is definitely his punishment for being unwilling to accept Naoe's death."

Takaya was wounded.
Because he believed a person who was not Naoe to be Naoe, in this way he was hurt when he should not have been. He had caused himself pain because of the false individual.
The more he was sincere to Naoe, the deeper the injury he sustained.
This was an ironic affair.
Was this the price for escaping?
It could be said that he had brought this upon himself. As for Kotarou, he would probably consider this as a troublesome matter, much like an unexpected calamity.

But...
If he accepted Naoe's death, what would happen to Takaya then?

"His weakening spirit would also encourage the decline of his powers. If he continues in this way, there'll come a time when he won't be able to recover."

Takaya, of course, would not understand the reasons for his abnormality. He believed Kotarou was 'Naoe' -- wanting to believe that he was Naoe so much that he was not aware of it, thus it was not surprising.

What Takaya was doing was actually impossible. To see someone who was not Naoe as Naoe, he was imposing too great a strain on himself. However, he still did it. Pouring his strength into something unreal to bring it to fruition, this had become his burden. Wanting to keep things in accordance with his own feelings, an abnormality arose. Then, in the process of attempting to rule out any peculiarity with his situation, he grew more confused as he tried to reason, sinking into a swamp. Takaya could not see that, in this way, he was compelling himself into a hopeless situation. Furthermore, even if Takaya was aware of it, he would not stop.
What was it that drove him to this?
The answer... there was only one.

"Because he doesn't want to accept Naoe's death." Chiaki said bitterly. "To accept that Kotarou isn't Naoe, to Kagetora, it's the equivalent of acknowledging Naoe's death."

That is, to accept reality.
To Takaya, this would be a kind of surrender. The absence of Naoe's existence in this world... No matter what, Takaya was unwilling to accept it.
This matter... Takaya would not acknowledge.
No, Takaya could not accept it, thus he evaded it.
From a world without Naoe,
he ran to this dangerous place.

"...I understand..." Ayako muttered. "...By doing this, Kagetora can continue to live. Otherwise, he would've died early on..."

"... Yeah."

"But then Naoe is really too pitiful. He's already dead, he's no longer in this world, yet Kagetora thinks he's still alive. So what did Naoe mean to him? To Kagetora, was Naoe just something that could be replaced to cover up the past? I can't help but think in this way. Can't help but think this way! Kagetora isn't being honest at all!... But!"

"..."

"I don't understand already..." Ayako sounded like she was about to cry. "But if he accepted Naoe's death, what would become of Kagetora? He went mad at Hagi. If Hojo Ujiyasu hadn't save him at that time what would've become of him? Just thinking about it sends shivers down my back. Kagetora managed to live until now because he refused to acknowledge Naoe's death. If that's the case, if he really accepted Naoe's death, Kagetora would definitely die. He would definitely go mad and die!"

It was possible that Kotarou began to employ the 'Art of Simulation' because he was aware of this. He had witnessed Takaya's madness with his own eyes at Hagi. For this very reason, although Kotarou knew that there was a risk of the soul weakening, he still used the 'Art of Simulation' to accommodate with Takaya's imaginary perception.

"...So do we allow him continue to indulge in this? Just let him continue to believe Kotarou to be 'Naoe', watch 'Naoe' grow increasingly strange? So it doesn't matter even if he can't control his powers?"

"I don't know! I don't know what's the best thing to do either!" Ayako yelled, causing Chiaki to become silent. Chiaki lowered his head, he breathed deeply to allow his mood to calm down.

"... You should stay focused, Haruie."

"... Me?"

"That's right. To me, whatever comes, comes. But we need Kagetora. In order for the Uesugi to settle all those onryou, we need Kagetora's strength, right? We can't let him go mad and die, right?"

"That's correct... But...!"

"That's the way for us outsiders. At the end of the day, this is a problem between Kagetora and Naoe. No matter what we say, Kagetora has turned out like this only because Naoe died."

Chiaki sighed heavily, he once again stepped on the accelerator.

"... But he can't continue to force himself indefinitely. This sort of escape will fail. The day when he has to accept Naoe's death is approaching soon. The day when he would have to accept reality..."

The day when he would have to accept reality.
The hour when he can no longer continue to escape.
All escape would be futile.
Even if this caused Takaya to go mad and die...

"Nagahide."

Chiaki glanced at Ayako, who called out in a lonely manner, and patted her head with his left hand.

"Oi, don't show me that sort of dreadful face. I will mend the head of that brat Kagetora back to normal. My hypnotherapy is more effective than any sort of orthodox medicine. If all else fails, I'll just brainwash that idiot."

"...You're honestly such a foolhardy brat, really."

Ayako wiped away her tears. Chiaki boosted his spirit once again.

"Anyway, we can stabilize his spirit with hypnotherapy, just let him continue to deceive himself for now. We've to first solve the problem at hand. We'll rest for the night, we probably have to go to the scene tomorrow."

After Chiaki finished, he stepped on the accelerator, driving out to the broad, empty street.

***

Kotarou had left Takaya's room and went to the car park, there he took notice of a person's figure standing by his car. The figure wore military clothes, he was a well-built young man. He was immediately aware of Kotarou's presence.

"Shuryou."

The young man addressed Kotarou in this way. Waiting for Kotarou was one of the Fuuma ningun, a man by the name of Shichirou.

"...Oh, it is you. Looks like I kept you waiting for long."

"My apologies for disturbing you at such an hour. The situation has been taken care of, Shichirou has come to report the results."

"It must have been exhausting." Kotarou nodded without expression. "How is the hyouza? The hyouza previously possessed by Nagano."

"The hyouza is dead."

Kotarou, slightly startled, widened his eyes.

"His carotid artery was severed, he died from massive amounts of blood loss."

"... Really." Kotarou closed his mouth, saying nothing further. Shichirou looked at Kotarou's face with a strange expression. Kotarou took notice of him.

"What is the matter?"

"Has something happened? Shuryou."

Shichirou asked in a hushed voice, causing Kotarou to feel puzzled.

"Why do you ask?"

"No. I have always felt that Shuryou's appearance is somewhat..."

From a third party's point of view, the iron mask that rarely changes, Kotarou's usual appearance of having no expression, had undergone a slight alteration. Apparently, his subordinate had noticed it. Kotarou appeared to be distressed over something in his heart. Never before had that inorganic expression of his, like ice-cold metal, bore any kind of 'color'.
But it seemed as though Kotarou was not self-aware of this. Kotarou revealed an even more unusual expression. Shichirou trembled as he observed his countenance, he opened his mouth to ask.

"...Did something happen?"

He asked once again. Kotarou restored his usual expression.

"Nothing. What is the matter?"

Apparently, Shichirou looked apprehensive. Seeing his appearance of having more to say, Kotarou folded his arms and nodded.

"You look like you have something to say?"

"No, just that..."

"Say it. Do not be hesitant."

"Shuryou..." Shichirou worded courteously. "Is it Saburou-sama's matter?"

Kotarou turned his eyes towards Shichirou.

"...Are you upset because of Saburou-sama's matter?"

"It is only natural to be worried for one's lord."

"No. I did not mean it this way."

Hearing this, it seemed like Kotarou was finally aware of Shichirou's meaning. He was evidently displeased that his mind-set had been guessed by his subordinate. Kotarou's gaze turned cold as he stared at Shichirou. Shichirou was startled and closed his mouth.

"Ujiyasu-kou has ordered us to be Saburou-sama's aides. As long as it is a command from Saburou-sama, we must obey it. It is only natural that the task ought to be accomplished in the fastest and most perfect manner. ...If you have so much time to make unnecessary conjectures, then you should have completed the investigation earlier."

"... Understood!"

Shichirou no longer touched the subject. "The following is the report."

He resumed a business-like intonation and began to report the details of the investigation.

From that day onwards, Kotarou began to collaborate with Kagetora as ordered by Ujiyasu.
Naoe's death had modified the situation. Because Kagetora had self-hypnotized himself into thinking that Kotarou was 'Naoe', he had to continue with this identity of 'Naoe' in order to preserve Kagetora's spiritual composure.
Upon knowing of this situation, Ujiyasu had given Kotarou a new order, that is, 'It would suffice to just devote yourself whole-heartedly to Saburou Kagetora now'. Thus, on the surface, the Fuuma clan that Kotarou led appeared to be retainers of the Uesugi and were only devoted to the Uesugi.
But they were not vassals of Kenshin. Even though they worked with Kagetora, in reality, they still obeyed and acted as accordingly to Ujiyasu's commands.

Uesugi Kagekatsu...

The face of Narita Yuzuru flashed in Kotarou's mind.
One who possessed the inherent quality of the Miroku Bodhisattva. It would not be an exaggeration to say that his astonishing power was capable of altering the crucial trends of Yami Sengoku.
Ujiyasu had decided to eliminate Narita Yuzuru before Kenshin could make use of him. Thus he wanted Kagetora return to the Hojo clan, and thereafter conduct a decisive battle with Kenshin.

For this reason, Kagetora's predicament of believing Kotarou to be 'Naoe', turned out to be a timely advantage to them. Kotarou would not suffer Kagetora's strong dislike and could be his trusted aide without any complications, thereby becoming a member of the Uesugi. The primary objective of allying himself with Kagetora had already been accomplished. Considering the situation at hand, now seemed to be a fairly promising time to carry out their task in persuading Kagetora to return to the Hojo clan.

Another objective was to investigate the direction of Kenshin's Yami Sengoku.
But Kenshin still had not personally contacted Kagetora.

Has he has decided to keep his activities a secret from Saburou-dono? Kenshin...

It appeared that way.

Not too long ago, the Uesugi's white-robed ladies were involved in certain suspicious activities. Their investigation had indicated that the white-robed ladies were not under the orders of Kagetora, they had carried out their operation for an unknown person. Kagetora had not noticed it. It seemed like Kenshin had conveyed his own ideas to the white-robed ladies without informing Kagetora and the others. It was quite obvious that he had decided to establish a new system of command.

Kenshin has decided to abandon Saburou-dono.

Kotarou had allowed the detached army of the Fuuma clan to investigate Kenshin's covert operations, and had come to this conclusion.

He probably has the intention of making use of Kagekatsu to build a new Uesugi army.

When Kagetora and the rest were completely unaware of it.
Ujiyasu regarded Kenshin's participation in Yami Sengoku as a sign that he was making battle plans.

You have been abandoned. Saburou-dono.

Kotarou said to him in his heart. All this while, Ujiyasu had never severed ties with him. There would come a day when he would have wanted Saburou Kagetora to return to the Hojo clan, allow him to reunite with his ancestors, and together resist the Oda and Kenshin.

Dealing with Kenshin required careful, meticulous planning, thus they had not executed any rash operations. But,

You must return to the Hojo clan as soon as possible.

--I trust Kenshin-kou! Kenshin-kou does not have such wild ambitions! Father's [Ujiyasu] words are wrong!

Despite saying this, Kagetora was not aware that he had allowed a servant of Ujiyasu to stay by his side.

--I will not return to the Hojo.

One day, your identity as Hojo Saburou shall be restored...

Kotarou lifted his gaze upwards to frown at the deep abyss of darkness as he listened to his subordinate's report.
Then, Takaya's heartfelt call suddenly echoed in his ears.
Kotarou looked at the building of the hotel.
The lights of Takaya's room were still on.
Seemed like he was not asleep yet.

--Isn't there something you must say now! Naoe!

The emotion in his [Takaya] eyes could not be erased from his vision. His voice could not leave his ears either.
What was Kotarou thinking of?
He calmly narrowed his eyes.

When the visitors rang the doorbell of Yuzuru's room all of a sudden, it was already late at night. Yuzuru, currently preparing for his exams, woke up in a start after having dozed off. The doorbell rang over and over again through the quiet room.

Who could it be? At this hour...

The visitors almost wanted to wake the entire neighborhood up by continuing to ring the doorbell furiously. Not only that, the door of the apartment was being pounded upon fiercely, the situation was honestly unusual. No matter how perfect the soundproof dividers of the apartment were, this sort of noise was unbearable. Yuzuru, startled, answered the intercom.

"It's me, Narita. Hurry up and open the door!"

The voice astonished Yuzuru.

"Chiaki? Is that Chiaki! What happened? Why have you suddenly, at this hour..."

"Open the door now! This brat Kagetora has..."

Yuzuru did not wait for Chiaki to finish and ran to the entrance. When he opened the door, the figures of two people were reflected in his eyes. Yuzuru could not help but yell out.

"Takaya!"

Supported by Chiaki Shuuhei's shoulders was Ougi Takaya. Takaya had sustained severe injuries, his entire shirt was soaked in blood. At first Yuzuru thought that he had gotten into a fight with someone, but this was obviously not the case. His clothes had been torn by a blade-like object in a sophistic manner, making his shirt look tattered, on his face were gashes that looked as though he had been scratched by the paw of an animal.

Takaya, his entire body limp, was supported by Chiaki. He lifted his head slightly at Yuzuru.

"Yuzuru...?"

"You idiot! What did you do! How did you get such serious wounds...!"

"Don't shout, Narita. The injuries aren't that serious. Do you have any extra change of clothes? We can't just return to the hotel like that."

Chiaki asked, dragging Takaya roughly into the apartment.

"Come into this room!"

Yuzuru opened the door of the bedroom to let them in, Chiaki then placed Takaya on the bed.

"Idiot... The blood will be smeared onto the sheets..."

Takaya said, wanting to get up, however he was immediately held down by Chiaki.

"You be obedient now. Narita, bring me a moist towel! Also a gauze and bandage! Or just bring the whole medical kit here!"

As Chiaki gave instructions, Yuzuru ran all over the place preparing the things he had requested. Chiaki carefully peeled off Takaya's upper garment, allowing him to remove the shirt that had been stained with blood, he skilfully wiped away the blood around his neck with the towel until he was clean. Fortunately the wounds were not as deep despite the numerous cuts. Yuzuru, bringing a change of clothes, looked at Takaya worriedly.

"Are you okay?"

"Sorry to bother you, Yuzuru. You're preparing for university exams now, aren't you? I've... given you more trouble..."

"It's okay. But really, just what on earth happened?"

"Same old same old. Fought with monsters."

Chiaki said, while cleaning the wounds with the gauze.

"This is all your fault, Kagetora. You got injured because you let your guard down when you fought with that pip-squeak."

"It hurts...!"

The disinfectant permeated the wound, Takaya grimaced.

"Can't you be a little more gentle...! Clumsy fool!"

"Serves you right, you big idiot."

Yuzuru, listening to their bickering, apparently felt that everything was fine. From the surface, it seemed that the wounds were not as deep as he had imagined, they should not be too serious. Anyhow, he could only heave a sigh of relief.

"I'll go make some hot coffee. Put the dirty shirt over there, I'll take it for washing. Don't feel uncomfortable at my place, just take a good rest."

After saying this, Yuzuru temporarily left the room.

Narita Yuzuru now stayed at a rented apartment in Tokyo's Shinagawa area. After successfully graduating from high school in the previous year, he had left Matsumoto to stay in Tokyo alone as he had been accepted into the Tokyo Dental University of his dreams. By reckoning, ten months had passed swiftly since the day he moved into this apartment. With respect to university matters, they were currently having examinations.

Takaya watched Yuzuru as he left the room, then sighed deeply. He lied down on the pillow.

"Why did you bring me here?"

"I had no choice, did I? How nice would it be to return in that sort of condition where your clothes are in tatters and soaked in blood. It'd definitely cause the receptionist to call the police. This was the nearest place. Just change your clothes, idiot."

"... This isn't a place that we can just simply crash in anytime, right? If Yuzuru were to fail his exams, it'll be your fault."

"Well he's not like some people."

Chiaki handily wound up the unused bandages, he surveyed the inside of the room.

"While other people are returning home, rushing all over the place, this obnoxious brat Narita is still here in this high-rise apartment... Haha, how hateful. This young master of a rich dentist simply would not understand the toil of a person's life."

Yuzuru was staying on the seventh floor of a ten-storey apartment, which was a five minute walk from the bus station, a fairly comfortable one room-one hall unit with a kitchenette and attached bathroom, it was a rather big place for just one occupant. The university that Yuzuru was now enrolled in was not far from this place either. They had heard that it was the same institution Yuzuru's father had studied at. Even though there was a dental university in Matsumoto, Yuzuru had mentioned that he wanted to live by himself away from his parents, hence decided to attend this university in Tokyo. His parents had allowed him to do so, saying that 'this is a kind of training to prepare him for adulthood'.

Takaya sighed softly and muttered.

"One year has passed... Since Yuzuru came to Tokyo."

"That's right. Time really flies. While we were patrolling the entire country, that brat was but enjoying his merry little university life."

"But if he's in Tokyo, there'll be more chances to meet up with him."

Takaya sighed after he finished and looked up at the ceiling, he pressed his eyelids with his fingers.

"What happened to that guy who escaped? Did you chase him down?"

"Don't worry. He has been settled with no remains. Probably was an aide of Nagano Narimori. He must've been the person who was buried alive as a sacrifice together with him when he committed seppuku. Bastards who just love to do foolish things. Even if one were to die together with others, no good will ever come out of it."

"... Settling the Nagano should be a good thing, but in the end it would only be advantageous to the Takeda."

Takaya sighed again. Nagano Narimori, whom he had exorcised, was formerly the lord of Minowa Castle in the state of Ueno. He was the son of the famous Nagano Narimasa. After his father died, he suffered an attack by Shingen, remorsefully committed seppuku and died. To Takeda Shingen, for the longest time the Nagano clan was considered to be 'their greatest enemy in the Joushuu district'. In Yami Sengoku, the Nagano clan and Shingen had been resurrected as onryou at about the same time but owing to the Takeda's invasion of Joushuu, which drove them out of Minowa Castle, they have now allied themselves with Awa of the Satomi clan in order to recover their daimyo's castle. By carrying out guerrilla warfare, they fought fiercely against the Takeda.

Besides the Chiba Prefecture, the Kanto region was now almost entirely under the power of the Takeda. The Hojo was destroyed after the incident at Nikko, and in the two years that passed, the influence of the Takeda had expanded in leaps and bounds. The territory that once belonged to the Hojo had been seized by the Takeda in one military sweep, other generals could not even take advantage of the opportunity. At present, it could be said that the land encompassed by the Kanto region was dyed in the colors of the Takeda. But it was because of this reason that a tenacious resistance was underway by the Satomi and the Nagano clans in one area of the Bousou peninsula, causing the Takeda a great deal of exasperation.

"But we don't have a choice. We can't just ignore the Nagano and let the residents continue to be involved in the incidents."

"... That's true."

Not knowing if it was because his wounds hurt, Takaya felt some pain thus closed his eyes, using his hand to comfort the bruises he had received from Narimori.

"Reassure the 'Ken En', who have done their best to provide assistance, on my behalf. Tell them their efforts are appreciated."

"Mmm. I'll pass on the message."

Chiaki had packed away the bandage roll, he stretched his body slightly.

"... Don't bother about that, the problem is you. Kagetora."

"...?"

"Sustaining this sort of injuries, it's not that you took Narimori lightly, right? Also, the condition of the scene after the fight. If it was just him alone, it's impossible that you would incur this extent of a devastation."

Chiaki had seen through it.

"Did you lose control of your powers again?"

Takaya turned away quietly. This seemed to be a matter he was unwilling to discuss, Takaya cast his look aside with displeasure. Chiaki, seeing his behavior, understood it and continued to say.

"Don't hide it. Even if you do, it's pointless. It's obvious with just one look at the destruction."

"That was because Narimori resisted."

"It can't be, right? With your strength, it should've been easy for you to suppress Narimori. Even if you didn't topple the walls of the warehouse, you tore up the asphalt pavement right? ... If I I could it."

"..."

"It was because your powers broke loose. Isn't that right?"

"Not to the extent of losing control."

Takaya stared at Chiaki fiercely.

"It was only a slip of the hand."

"And because of your slip, you killed the hyouza?"

Takaya halted in his speech, he stared at Chiaki bitterly. Chiaki disregarded Takaya's manner, arrogantly folded his arms, and leaned against the back of the chair.

"Looks like it'd be better if I carried on with the treatment."

"I don't need it anymore."

"I'm saying this because you need it. Now you've already killed one hyouza that should've been saved!"

"I didn't kill him!"

Takaya retorted in all seriousness.

"I might have injured him, but I didn't kill him!"

"You can't be sure of that yet. Even though we called the ambulance, he had already sustained severe wounds. The odds of him being saved is probably about 50-50. At least if you had been able to control your powers, the hyouza wouldn't have received that grave an injury. Am I correct?"

Takaya could not say anything to refute, he could only look at Chiaki painfully.

"Until you can control your powers 100% like previously, I'll continue with the treatment. This isn't for your sake. I don't want to get injured because of your predicament. To prevent your powers from going out of control we must continue with the treatment. To be safe, you must go through one 'enforcement hypnosis' per day. Understood?"

Even though Takaya was unwilling, he felt downcast and had no choice but to nod.

"Good. That's good."

"--I want to drink some water..."

Seemingly tired, Takaya lied down on the bed weakly, rolling up his sleeves.

"I want cold water, can you get that for me?"

"What a truly tough general you are."

Chiaki said as he got up from his chair.

"I'll go get it. You just rest a bit."

"Naoe..."

Takaya mumbled. Chiaki, a little startled, shifted his gaze.

"Contact Naoe, I want him to pick me up. We can't disturb Yuzuru's study. We'll return to the hotel tonight."

"... Mmm. I'll contact him."

Chiaki replied in a muffled voice and left the room. Once the door closed, the inside of the room turned pitch black. Takaya, lying on the bed, had already closed his eyes.

- Chiaki finds Yuzuru in the kitchen making coffee, tells Yuzuru to give Takaya a glass a water - Takaya would be more at ease if it were Yuzuru
- Chiaki then drops himself down on the sofa, sighing deeply; notices the song playing - a very popular one at the moment; then Chiaki criticizes him being such a pampered rich man's son, thinks Yuzuru has probably never worked before
- Chiaki, like the rest, keeps thinking Yuzuru wants to be a doctor; Yuzuru is studying dentistry
- Yuzuru starts being firm with Chiaki for letting Takaya get so badly wounded; Chiaki says he lectures like an old man
- Yuzuru takes a glass of water to the bedroom; Takaya has fallen asleep probably out of fatigue
- Takaya had not told Yuzuru about the incident of Itsukushima but Chiaki had told him so Yuzuru knows he had been used by Nobunaga and what it means to have the Seed planted in him; in fact Yuzuru's memories during that time are fuzzy, like he was having a nightmare
- Yuzuru did cry bitter tears over his lack of strength and whole situation, but ironically it is because he had been targeted by Nobunaga that he could continue to be friends with Takaya, although he can't admit that it's better this way since it poses a risk to Takaya and the others
- the thing that irks Yuzuru the most is that the Takaya now is no longer the Takaya that he once knew due to all the things that have happened, however Takaya has never changed in his attitude towards Yuzuru (although Yuzuru suspects this is because Takaya doesn't want him to worry)
- Yuzuru hates himself for becoming a person who's suspicious of others so much that Takaya has become someone that can't be fully trusted to him
- Yuzuru remembers that in high school Takaya seemed more street smart than other students although he had a kind of naiveté in his face; every time Yuzuru goes to a gathering or reunion of his former high school classmates, they would always ask what was Takaya up to now and he had to be vague with his answers ('He's doing fine')
- but the one who was pitiful was Miya (Takaya's sister), who is already a senior high school student; Takaya only let his family know that he was working in Tokyo; Yuzuru thinks that Takaya's past conflicts with his father could also be preventing him from returning to Matsumoto
- Yuzuru feels that Takaya's current life doesn't have future, to continue with this 'job' it'll only increasingly isolate him from society; Yuzuru wonders if Takaya has already let go of everything
- Yuzuru feels gloomy about Takaya's predicament, it's as if his life just stopped two years ago when he became more and more involved in battles against the onshou; Yuzuru only wants Takaya to lead a contented life
- just when Yuzuru decides to leave the room to let Takaya rest, Takaya awakens
- Takaya asks what song is playing; it's by 'Seeva', the main theme song of a movie; Takaya likes the song a lot
- Yuzuru then offers to make a copy for him there and then, but suddenly he remembers the concert tickets and persuades Takaya to go with him; Takaya says he'll try his best to go
- Takaya mentions that being at Yuzuru's place makes him feel very much at east and very warm; Yuzuru then tells him to stay as long as he likes but Takaya refuses, thinking it'd be better to return to the hotel, Naoe will be coming to fetch him
- Yuzuru is rather disappointed

***

One hour later, two people arrived to pick them up. Once the main door was opened, Ayako pushed Chiaki aside as she rushed into the apartment.

"Where's Kagetora... Kagetora, are you alright!"

"Hey, it's midnight. Lower your voice a little."

"Is he here? In the bedroom, right? Kagetora! Kage...!"

Just as Ayako was about to enter the bedroom, the door opened, Takaya emerged. It seemed as though he had heard her voice and had gotten up. Takaya, standing beside the door, widened his eyes firmly, with no hint of the weakness from before. They were uncertain as to when had he gotten ready, but he had changed his clothes as well, and was ready to return at anytime.

"Sorry to bother you. And needing you to fetch me back as well."

"Kagetora, how's your injury? Is it okay not to see a doctor?"

"It's fine, just minor scratches. Sorry to have worried you."

After Takaya finished, he noticed the man, wearing a black Western-styled suit, standing by the door behind Ayako. All of a sudden the expression in Takaya's eyes grew sharp without reason, he stared at that man.

"I have come to fetch you back. Kagetora-sama."

"..."

Takaya did not know why he was angry, he stared at the other with a terrifying expression.

"... Why didn't you come immediately? Naoe."

The man addressed as Naoe looked at Takaya with a clear expression in his eyes.

"My deepest apologies. I've arranged for a car, it is downstairs. Shall we go."

Takaya stared at that man silently for a while, then fiercely turned his face away, ignoring his presence. He said to Yuzuru as he wore his shoes and tied the shoelaces.

"Sorry for bothering you, Yuzuru."

"It's okay. Are you leaving already?"

"Yeah. When everything has calmed down, I'll come visit you."

Takaya replied, he stood up and turned towards Yuzuru.

"Work hard on your exams!"

Takaya seemed to say 'Let's go', gesturing to the man in the black suit with his chin, and left the hall. The tall man briefly acknowledged Yuzuru, a long bundle of hair swayed broadly behind his back, he followed behind after Takaya.
Yuzuru observed that man called 'Naoe', he was still rather unaccustomed to it. Chiaki, with a complicated facial expression, saw them to the exit, sighing in a greatly exaggerated manner.

"No choice now. It's about time we roll. See ya, Narita. We'll come again when we're free."

"Ah, wait. Where are you guys staying now? I want to send the clothes over once they're washed, tell me the address."

"We'll come again to collect it."

"You idiot, Yuzuru-kun wants to know Kagetora's address. You're such a thickheaded brat."

Ayako scolded Chiaki, then said to Yuzuru.

"We'll be staying somewhere else tomorrow. Once we've decided on the hotel, we'll let you know. Don't worry too much about it, Kagetora's problems, we'll be responsible for taking good care of him."

"Ayako-san..."

"It's alright. Nee-san will never tell lies."

After saying 'Bye Bye', Ayako hurried Chiaki out of Yuzuru's apartment. Both of their figures faded away through the other side of the door. Yuzuru was left standing there with a dumbfounded expression.

Takaya...

***

Once they headed downstairs, there was no sign of Kotarou's car. It seemed like Takaya had set out in his car without waiting for them. Ayako was left with no other choice but to hitch a ride on Chiaki's Leopard.

"Looks like the kekkai is really showing some effect."

Ayako said as she turned back to look at the apartment.

"I met with the 'Ken En' in charge of Yuzuru-kun's security just now. He said no one has interfered recently. The apartment's kekkai seems to be effective, it should be alright for the time being."

"As long as the 'Seed of Evil Kings' is still frozen that is."

Chiaki inserted the key to start the car engine.

"No doubt it was Kenshin-kou who unleashed the Touketsu Nami, looks like even Nobunaga would find it hard to thaw. But how long can this actually last?"

"Did you really see him? The one who attacked with the Touketsu Nami at Itsukushima shrine was not Kagetora but Kenshin-kou? Is that true?"

"I don't know. Or maybe I was dreaming, I couldn't really tell."

He pushed the button on the side with his forefinger, the headlights illuminated the road ahead, which was dark and quiet with no sign of human activity.

"Nobunaga hasn't done anything attention-grabbing since the incident at Itsukushima. Just what is that bastard doing now and where? Doing nothing for such a long period of time, it's really weird."

"That's true. It's weird. After causing such a large disturbance, he's now quiet once again, it's honestly really strange."

"We've also been unable to grasp his whereabouts since then, just what's going on? What is the Devil Lord thinking?"

Saying this, Chiaki stepped on the accelerator. The car headed out into the night.

Nearly two years have passed since the incidents of Itsukushima.

After that, the battles of Yami Sengoku intensified unceasingly. Everyday, at different locations, fights between onshou would break out, a few destructive cases have also happened. Takaya and the others had no time for rest. No matter how many they exorcised, new onshou were resurrected over and over again, this futile task that did not seem to have any progress, caused them to feel frustrated. Once the battle grew intense, the onshou would begin to act willfully and make a scene. Destroying buildings, involving residents and so forth, the disturbances grew more frequent.

With regards to influence, there had been a fairly huge change in the division of power among the clans. The Takeda clan and its confederates were growing stronger by the day, and with this unrivaled power, an influx of vassals followed after as some of the dead chose to gather with the powerful. The news of Nobunaga's resurrection had sent huge shockwaves throughout the community of onshou nationwide. If one were to look at the broad picture, the situation of Yami Sengoku would ultimately end up as a clash of powers between the Oda and the Takeda.

"However, in the light of this situation, Kagetora really didn't get any rest."

Ayako rested her head against the back of the seat and muttered.

"Organizing the 'Ken En' that are scattered all over the place, giving out orders after analyzing the intelligence gathered by the white-robed ladies, this is something really difficult to do. He's truly extraordinary. With the amount of information that he's handling, he can still determine the appropriate instructions to give. If he weren't the general, the Uesugi would've long been finished."

"Really?"

"Of course. See for yourself, the look in the eyes of the 'Ken En' that are so full of trust and respect. It's the same as previously. They bore grudges against the Uesugi and yet have now become a long-standing team of onshou for the Uesugi. In the end, didn't they pledge their allegiance to Kagetora? Also, Ukita Hideie. It is because of Kagetora that he is so deferent to the Uesugi. People who have perspective, even the onshou, would realize the strength of our Kagetora."

"You've always worshipped that brat since the ancient times."

"That's right. I worship him. I respect him a lot. Anything wrong with that?"

"No, not at all."

Chiaki chewed the cigarette in his mouth, he turned right at the cross junction.

Within these two years, Takaya had accomplished splendid feats that would cause one to stare in awe. As the tower of command of the Uesugi, a person standing at the very top, Takaya exhibited his strength with great eloquence. With an attitude of never pandering to others, a determination that did not yield to the tough stubbornness of others, it drew people to him, so much that at times the high-ranking officer of the enemy would suffer correction and submit. As for those onshou, Takaya did not know if they should be used to boost the military strength of the Uesugi, but he did not exorcise them. Much like the way Kenshin had operated previously, he pardoned and allowed them to become their own comrades.

The position of the Uesugi was certainly that way initially - an independent, policing force that did not change. But on closer inspection, one would discern that the influence of the Uesugi had matured to the point where it could contend with the Oda, the Takeda and the other clans in terms of power.

"...That brat has certainly done a pretty good job."

"?"

"I'll admit this much. How is it that we can't find that uncle Irobe no matter how hard we look, that man who's now called 'Naoe' has also become a part of the Uesugi, but he doesn't have 'exorcism powers'. What should be the heart of the Yashashuu's military strength has obviously been diminished by two members. For the Uesugi to still be able to completely function as usual and carry out all those operations, we have the strength that brat alone to thank. So much that the clan is growing stronger. Solving all the problems by himself, even making reparations in the necessary areas. So utterly perfect that it would cause one to hate him. And as if he wasn't satisfied enough, even our enemies have now been won over to our side, allowing them to help us. That brat is honestly too much."

"..."

"Naoe is obviously no longer in this world."

Chiaki's words were full of bitterness, causing Ayako to become gloomy.

"Didn't we promise not to talk about this?"

"Two years have flew past since he died..."

Since that incident, Chiaki and Ayako had clung onto that one in a million chance of finding him and had conducted a desperate, meticulous search for Naoe. The scene had underwent spiritual examination, they had also tried calling out to him. However, they could not detect the slightest hint of a reply to indicate his soul's existence. Believing that even if he could not possess, perhaps it was possible that the form of his soul still existed. They had requested the help of the 'Ken En' and the white-robed ladies to search every single corner throughout the entire country.

There had been no answer.
They could only come to the conclusion that Naoe had been purified.
But, Takaya could not feel that disappointment at all.

"That wretch..."

Chiaki inhaled the cigarette smoke, stepping on the accelerator forcefully.

"Just watching him would cause one to vex."

"Nagahide, that matter..."

"He doesn't know anything at all. Unexpectedly self-hypnotizing himself. I've never seen such an extreme way of escape. Even now, I still don't accept it. I definitely won't forgive him for using this sort of method to escape."

"Nagahide."

"Suddenly seeing that brat Kotarou as Naoe..."

Mumbling in an austere manner, Chiaki stared ahead.

"Damn asshole..."

Ayako, feeling uncomfortable, grew silent. Several orange street lights flickered in the harbor. The shores were freezing cold at one hour past midnight.

As dawn broke, snow began to fall by the lakeside.
There were no passing vehicles, just a silence as though the lakeside was frozen. On the opposite side of the deep green lake, an indistinct mountain range could be seen to be covered with a layer of white snow. The silence almost caused one's ears to ache.

A dock, the sound of the small waves could gradually be heard. Gazing at the surface of the lake that had not completely frozen, he stood on the front edge of the dock.
That was a man wearing a white sweater that was fairly contrasting, tall and standing upright, possessing all five of his senses. Even though he wore a warm feather-lined overcoat, as he did not have any gloves on, the exposed outer surface of his hands would soon freeze.

With a slight creaking sound, the door of the rest cabin opened.

"Perhaps it would be better to come inside?"

The words that reached the man's back, came from one who was older than him, a man wearing a hat and a thick woolen overcoat. The corners of his face were prominent, his nose was a little hooked, he was about more than 35 years of age. Despite being senior to the other man, the way of his speech and mannerisms seemed to indicate that he was the subordinate of that man.

"The wind outside could cause injury to the body, you have only just recovered from a serious indisposition, you should look after yourself."

"It's alright. I want to breathe some of the outside air."

"You must not push yourself. This is the most important period. Please come inside the room."

The man thought, 'He truly likes to worry', and smiled quietly. As a matter of fact, the condition of his body was not completely ideal yet. Even though his physical strength was in slow recovery, he still needed more time before he could move around normally.

"It's alright. This air temperature is just right for adjusting the spiritual bearing. I will not exert myself, do not worry."

"Adjusting the wavelength?"

The subordinate immediately exhibited a solemn expression.

"How is your condition? ...Did the synchronization go smoothly?"

"Mmm. Seems like the wavelength was identical in the first place. This is the most perfect one. So much that at times I would even forget that my own body is right here."

The man said with a deep smooth voice.

"Perhaps it has something to do with the land in this location. This place is capable of serving as a suitable antenna. The soul's condition is also at its optimum level. My sensory capacity is extremely high. You really found a good place for me."

'Hakkai'. The man who was the subordinate.

The subordinate shook his head frankly.

"No. It was not I who chose it for you... It was that lord."

"That's true."

The man lowered his gaze, his head slowly stooped down.

"How is their situation? Did anything interesting happen after that?"

"The events of Nabeshima have already been settled. The ringleader was exorcised, after forcing the group into submission, the new white-robed ladies were sent to Saga. They are currently engaged in battle with Nagano of Kanto."

"There's no mistaking him..."

The man uttered, smiling. He breathed the ice-cold air beside the lake into his windpipes, the man coughed slightly. At the same time he felt a small pain in his chest, his body cringed slightly.

"Are you alright?"

"Mmm. ...Don't mind me. Sorry to have worried you."

"I am only doing what I ought to do. I am your subordinate. To obey your orders, assist you, become your arms and legs, that is my task."

"Task..?"

The man smiled mockingly.

"Well said. I know one who used these words as an excuse, a man who has lived for 400 years."

"..."

"But even if he were to lose this excuse, he would definitely continue to live on. No matter how much he seeks death, he would definitely continue to live in order to save himself."

"..."

"--Because he still lives."

The ice-cold wind blew across the white birch forest. The subordinate Hakkai, calmly gazed at the back of the man who endured the blast of cold wind and stared at the lake.

"Regarding that matter, are you still confused over it?"

"..."

"What do you plan to do?"

The man's expression became pained, he quietly concealed the brown of his eyes.

"If you were in my shoes, would you be able to come to a decision immediately? Hakkai."

"I..."

The subordinate mumbled, for a moment he paused in his words, then promptly replied with determination.

"If it was the dying wish of that lord."

"You will follow it?"

Asked in this way all of a sudden with such a severe tone, Hakkai became silent. The man wrinkled his brows and inclined his head to listen to the sound of the waves by the lake. Countless white snowflakes disappeared into the dusky lake. From the apparent rift in the clouds, the snow glided down onto his shoulders, and melted away in a soundless, dismal way.

From the dock, while staring at the landscape of the boundless valleys in between the mountains and the vast lake, he recalled the few occasions when he had seen this lonesome scene, the appearance of that grieved and distressed figure of his back appeared before his eyes, the man muttered lowly.

"--Perhaps it can't be said for sure that he is feeling lonely."

The man calmly extended his hand into the air, receiving a snowflake that floated down. The arm that could only grasp the ice-cold air seemed to bend as though it wanted to embrace someone, the man clutched the snowflake in his trembling fist to his chest. After calmly closing his eyes, he murmured in a low voice.

The subordinate could not hear it.

The man hummed the words deeply, wrinkling his brow in pain, then once again gazed in the direction of the vast lake among the deep mountains.
The pure white snow screened his line of sight. The quiet, heavenly lake appeared willing to bear the longing of the people and melt it away. Only deeply, silently, existing in that place.

Numerous lightning-like rays of light crackled in the darkness of the night. At times, when his Goshinha was hit, a splintering sound would be issued followed by a discharge of sparks. But he was undaunted and continued to hunt down the runaway who was fleeing ahead of him.

"Nnhh...!"

Now, the tall cement walls towered over him. This was the end of the warehouse street. The runaway looked behind with a fearful expression. There was no way out.

"Looks like this is it for you, Nagano Narimori."

Hearing the voice, the runaway was startled.
Flickering in the darkness was a pair of tiger eyes.
Ougi Takaya recovered his breath and slowly closed in on the cornered runaway.

"Damn you... Uesugi...!"

"Stop with this senseless resistance, give it up already. You probably don't want to suffer anymore right?"

"Who is going to surrender to a person like you!"

The runaway, puttng up a struggle like he was about to die, shouted.

"This place won't be our 'end'! Before the hateful snow falls, no matter how many times I descend into Hell I will climb out once again!"

"Do you really want to go to Hell that much?"

Takaya's eyes twinkled in the darkness, he slowly accumulated his powers.

"...Your life, had already ended 400 years ago. If you want to return, why don't you wait for yourself to be reincarnated."

"I am Nagano Narimori! Nagano Narimori is not 'finished' yet!"

Narimori's eyes filled with streaks of blood as he shouted out in this way, gathering up his final strength.

"I will kill you and send you to Hell!"

"!"

Boom!
A thunderous sound, a force of gravity that appeared to want to gouge the asphalt road was stirring up from his feet. The unimaginable weight of this power took Takaya by surprise.

"Ahhhhhh---!"

Narimori's body released a golden luminosity, numerous brutal arrows of light were fired at Takaya.

"Nnhh!"

Takaya set up a Goshinha. The wave of arrows struck him like rain. When cornered, a person's final resistance would no doubt be a display of incredible strength.

"Why don't you go to Hell! Uesugi--!"

Narimori increased his power. Takaya, clenching his teeth and using all of his strength to resist with a Goshinha, unconsciously grew stern. From the depths of his own body arose the powers of exorcism...!

"This is it, Narimori...!"

Before the overwhelming energy of Takaya's power, Narimori's face stiffened in terror. But at that instant, Takaya's body shook violently, he widened his eyes in shock.

What...!

Takaya's instinct felt a danger, not of the enemy but rather, of himself. A feeling that something within himself had loosened and was flying about madly.

"Ah...ah!"

Takaya felt his powers swell up inside his body as though it wanted to push open the floodgates. He could sense that his powers no longer obeyed his commands.

No...!

It will explode out! Takaya wanted to stop himself thus exposed a moment of hesitation, giving Narimori a chance to take advantage of the situation.

"Too careless!"

Narimori faced Takaya and fired incantation arrows.

"Nnhh!"

Being unguarded allowed the enemy to grab that moment of opportunity, the spell mangled Takaya's clothes, slashed through his skin, causing him to feel countless pangs of agony as though his body was being sprayed with fire, Takaya had completely lost control of his incantations.

"Nnhh... Ahhhh--!"

Following that was a howl like a cry of grief, the incantations from Takaya's internal being dashed out. He wanted to suppress it, but it was too late.

"!"

An unexpected level of strength of incantations burst out ferociously as if it had broken down the embankment, wrecking the surrounding walls, tearing up the asphalt ground, giving birth to a blade of wind that swirled up in a storm and charged towards Narimori.

"Wahhh!"

Blood flew out, spattering onto the wall behind Narimori. Narimori's body was lacerated by that immense blade of wind, his torso was stained red in an instant.

"!"

Takaya widened his eyes. That was unacceptable, he could not stop his incantations!

"Nnnhhhh---...!"

Takaya wanted to restrain his spells with all urgency. Wanting to restore his control, he desperately forced himself to nullify the force that was continuously increasing in intensity within him, he wrapped his arms around his body wanting to suppress the spells that wanted to break out.

"Nnhh...!"

Takaya suddenly opened his eyes. It seemed as though he had finally arrested it! He could control it!

"!"

His incantations were his own again. At the same time, Takaya did not allow the soul of Narimori rising from the collapsed body to escape.

"--!"

Once he recovered, he dealt Narimori with an 'External Bind'. The weak, swaying soul was bound. Unable to budge. Takaya firmly knotted his fingers together into a mudra of Bishamonten.

"Noumakusamanda Bodanan Baishiramandaya Sowaka!"

White light concentrated in his mudra. The brilliant rays grew more intense, and finally changed into a beautiful, round sphere.

"Namotobatsu Bishamonten! To subjugate the demons, grant me thy power!"

Takaya declared powerfully, facing the void of the sky.

"Exorcise!"

!

The sphere of white light burst out in the next moment, fanning Takaya's hair.
The clean rays of light that struck out swallowed the surroundings in an instant. The soul that had been externally bound issued a soundless lament, and was drawn into the pure luminescence.
Engulfing the darkness, the radiance revolved in a dazzling manner.
The rays of light that Narimori had submerged into rotated silently, sending him to another world. Then, darkness returned to the surrounding area.

Takaya collapsed onto the ground on his knees. His heart was pounding with exceptional ferocity. He could not breathe normally. His heart had suffered a heavy burden as a result of his inability to completely control his incantations. Takaya's pale face pressed against his chest, unable to endure it he curled up.
He could hear the voice of someone calling him from a distance. Someone was calling him. That was... Chiaki's voice.
His cheeks felt the coldness of the asphalt ground, Takaya widened his eyes slightly.

Calling me...

His heart was aching to the point that it wanted to burst. He felt intermittent waves of pain from his wounds.
Takaya shut his eyes. His entire body was in pain, he wanted someone to come and hold him as soon as possible.

It hurts...

Hurry over here---...

His heart was in extreme agony. Takaya clenched his teeth desperately.
His fingers groped at the asphalt layer. His body was aching.

Hurry...

All of a sudden, at that moment.

Twinkling in the darkness was a white radiance. Feeling a cold tiny object fluttering above his hot cheeks, Takaya opened his eyes.
Appearing out of the night air, a small snowflake floated down.
The snowflake fell onto his body, Takaya was uncertain as to why it made him feel warm. It was as if someone's yearning had descended on his body, causing him to feel bundled, slightly alleviating the pain in his heart.

Hurry, come over here...
As if in answer, Takaya called out to the empty sky.
I am here--
It won't do if it isn't your arms.
Embrace me,
Hurry and remove this pain for me.

Your calling voice conveyed from a distance.
I can hear it.
Come quickly.
Quickly... come to this place.

Countless pure-white snow glided down from the barren sky.
The lonely figure of his back was curled up and called his name.
--Falling continuously.
As if wrapping around him.

--I will return to your side.
To your side...
In order to tightly embrace you.

A young man crawled out of the sea onto the rocks on the shore.

"Ha....Nh..."

It was Narita Yuzuru. No, his body was still being controlled by Nobunaga. However he was worthy of the name Nobunaga, it seemed like he did not drown in the sea. He pulled himself up, water continuously dripped off his body as he climbed up onto the harbor.

"...this isn't my own body, sure enough I still can't do as I please."

His injuries from the backlash of the Hakonha were fairly serious, but Nobunaga could not be defeated in this way. Apparently he came through by allowing the current to carry him to shore. Far ahead, the Ootorii of Itsukushima shrine stood on the sea. The black tengu circled over the shrine like red clouds, destroying the kekkai of the Oda headquarters, launching an attack on the soldiers.

"Damn it... Uesugi..."

Muttering in this way, a fierce headache assailed him.

"Nnhh... ahh..."

It was as if Yuzuru, within the body, was saying 'Leave at once', continuing to struggle. Nobunaga held his head and managed with difficulty to suppress him, talking to himself.

"Not yet. I can't free you yet... Narita Yuzuru. Not until I defeat Kagetora."

Although Nobunaga's body wobbled unstably, he still headed towards Itsukushima shrine.

***

Not along after the tengu attack, the army in Itsukushima shrine retaliated.

"Shoot them down! Don't lose to the tengu!"

Ranmaru shouted. The tengu wanted to break down the kekkai that had been established from the Ootorii. This assault by the tengu legion was led by Jirobou. The soldiers remaining in the shrine desperately carried out defensive measures. Then, at the point when the fight was raging like a vigorous wildfire.

Suddenly, a strange cry resounded from the depths of the main shrine, the gateway flung open without warning.

!

Extremely dazzling rays of light shot in.

"Nnnh Ahhhh!!"

The soldiers of the Oda could not help but shield their eyes.

"What! What is going on!"

"Yahhhhh!!!"

An exceptionally strong flash from the interior destroyed the Oda's kekkai. A fierce storm suddenly blew out from the main shrine, the possessors issued a cry of grief, they were stripped of their bodies.

"W-What...!"

The large army of tengu pressed in from outside the wrecked kekkai. They began to attack the soldiers of the Oda. The shaden was full of cries and snarls, the situation sank into a huge chaos.

"What happened! What on earth...!"

Ranmaru yelled as he protected his body. An intense power blasted out from the main shrine.

Don't tell me it's...!

The power that had been abruptly released was a divine one. The enshrined deities of Itsukushima -- Ichikishima-hime, Tagori-hime, Tagitsu-hime and so on, finally exhibited their godly might. Until just moments ago, it had been Nobunaga's power that had suppressed them all this while. Taking advantage of the hour that Nobunaga's strength was lessened, the deities broke through the repression and were visibly indignant, beginning to attack the intruders.

Not only that...!

Ranmaru immediately noticed another matter. Someone from the outside had spurred this. An outsider possessing enormous power had beckoned the three deities, incited them to destroy the kekkai. Someone who possessed a similar divine power.

Who could that be...!

"Nnhh Ahh!"

The might of the gods gradually intensified, Ranmaru was nearly blown away. He resisted with great difficulty, and shouted.

"Everyone, it's too dangerous! Retreat, retreat!"

From Senjokaku, Ayako and Tomo-hime gazed at the devastation of the shaden. The Oda's soldiers guarding Senjokaku had already been repelled by the both of them.

"Looks like Isari-hime did that for us."

The three deities of Itsukushima had been called upon by Isari-hime, who had underwent deification with the Kanman-iwa. She was the one who provided assistance in the destruction of the kekkai.

"Isari... Yes."

Tomo-hime mumbled, after painfully closing her eyes she once again lifted her head without hesitation.

"Kakizaki-dono. I shall assume responsibility for protecting Satsuki. This place will fall to the enemy soon. Leave the rest to me, please return to Kagetora-dono's side."

"Tomo-hime."

"I thank you very much. Really... thank you."

Tomo-hime said, looking at Ayako.

"Narumi's body, I will return it once this matter has concluded. I shall leave the two of them at Miyajimaguchi, when that time comes I would have to trouble you again to take them home."

Ayako nodded. After Tomo-hime confirmed with a nod, she turned and ran towards Itsukushima shrine.
Watching the shape of Tomo-hime's back for a moment, Ayako then ran in the opposite direction.

***

The battle at Oono Seto had ended. In general, the sea had finally resumed its tranquility, but the crowd on the coastal areas could not be calmed. The residents, policemen and others that had rushed to Miyajima harbor were in an uproar, crying out 'What on earth happened', 'What was that just now', demanding explanations amidst the chaos.

Takaya had returned to land. In order to evade the commotion, he landed at Suginoura. Not long after, Chiaki arrived on Tarobou's back. After Ujiyasu had placed Takaya down, he flew back to the sky.

"Hey, pull yourself together, Kagetora!"

Chiaki rushed over to Takaya's side on the sand beach. Because he had carried out a Kekkai Chobuku, a huge amount of his physical strength had been consumed.
Chiaki supported Takaya with his shoulder, he stood up with a great deal of difficulty. Takaya's breathing was disorderly, his body was also incapable of exerting itself.

"Can you walk?"

"...have to go... save Yuzuru..."

"Nonsense! Your body can no longer move. Leave the rest to me, you should take a break."

"No, I can't..."

Takaya was gasping for air.

"Nobunaga is waiting for me. I'm the only one who can remove the 'Seed of Evil Kings' from Yuzuru's body..."

"Trust me a bit will you. You'll die if you continue in this condition."

"Kagetora!"

A resounding female voice came from across the street. It was Ayako's voice. Driving a long distance bus, her expression changed greatly as she stopped the vehicle, got out and ran over.

"Are you alright? Are you injured?"

"Haruie...?"

"Where did you get that vehicle from?"

"It was by the roadside, just borrowing it for a while. I saw it when I reached Suginoura. ...Tomo has succeeded. Destroyed the 'manju' and 'kanju'. It won't be long before the Oda at Itsukushima shrine decide to flee."

"Seems... like it."

"What happened to Motoharu and the others? Have all of the Mouri's men been exorcised?"

"Weren't they supposed to be exorcised together with the navy soldiers?

"I don't know..."

Takaya, who found breathing painful, answered.

"Sue Harukata's exorcism has been confirmed, but there's no surplus energy confirming Kikkawa Motoharu's exorcism. It's possible that he escaped before the 'Yamato' sank."

"Then Motoharu is still alive?"

"I don't know."

Takaya shook his head.

"Anyway, he's no longer at Itsukushima. Don't bother with that, what's important is Nobunaga. We have to rescue Yuzuru from Nobunaga's hands."

Takaya lifted his head to look at Ayako.

"How did things go? Did the summoning of the might of the three deities go smoothly?"

"Yeah. Isari-hime helped us. Isari-hime's soul assimilated with the Kanman-iwa in order to destroy the 'manju' and 'kanju'. Because she underwent deification with the strength of the spiritual fire and Goddess Youkihi, we succeeded."

"Isari-hime she..."

Chiaki revealed a somewhat regretful expression.

"Really..."

"What about Nobunaga's movements? What happened to him?"

"Still haven't found him yet. A person like him surely won't let Narita die though, so he should still be stolidly alive somewhere."

Takaya stared in the direction of Itsukushima shrine with an exhausted expression.

"Nobunaga will definitely return to Itsukushima shrine. I'm going to Itsukushima shrine. Drive, Haruie."

"Ah, okay."

"Are you going to use that sort of body to fight him?"

"I still have some strength left. At least I can drive him out of Yuzuru's body."

"How would you be able to do that! You moron!"

Chiaki scolded him all of a sudden, Takaya was taken aback.

"Don't bullshit me! With that completely powerless body, even if you confronted him you won't be able to defeat that bastard! If you're looking for death that's your business, but if you're looking for a place to commit suicide, I won't accompany you!"

"Chiaki..."

"Commit suicide...?"

Ayako's ear sharpened, she had heard it.

"What do you mean by that? Nagahide?"

"Being so reckless all of a sudden. Do you think yourself to be very old! I don't know if that's your sense of responsibility as a general or whatever, but do you want to die that badly! How beautiful, watching your ability to stay so calm up to this point, one would soon be moved to tears! Stop acting so tough! It's not like you're some tragic leading character of a story! You couldn't even manage the small task of protecting him! I won't pity you just because Naoe died, Kagetora!"

Ayako suddenly widened her eyes.

"Naoe died?!"

"I won't die."

Takaya said clearly, in an unusual manner, looking directly at Chiaki.

"I won't die here."

"Because you have a duty you must complete? Such perfection that one would weep."

"..."

Takaya hung his head.

"...I won't die in a dream."

Chiaki and Ayako stared at him, startled.

"Kagetora... you..."

Takaya fiercely threw off both of their hands, not depending on anyone for support he alone walked away from the sand beach. For a moment, Chiaki and Ayako were speechless. Takaya spurred his body, forced himself to straighten his back without any emotion, he proceeded ahead in a defiant manner.

The sound of the great waves followed after.
A gale brushed away the sand on the beach.

***

When the Sun had begun to set in the West, the serenity of Itsukushima shrine had been restored.
There was no sign of anyone in the shaden.
The tidewaters rippled just beneath the shaden, the entire base of the shrine looked like a temple that stood on the sea.

After the might of the gods had been mobilized, scattered all over the corridors of Itsukushima shrine were the bodies of men who had originally been possessed. Every one of them had been emptied. The retainers of the Oda clan, whose numbers were originally numerous, suffering the activation of the power of the deities and the invasion of the tengu, had believed themselves to be no match for their opponents, and hence, it seemed as though the entire army had been commanded to withdraw from Itsukushima. But despite sustaining such a fierce attack from the tengu and the onslaught of divine power, the shaden was not in the least bit damaged. One could say that it was a fairly splendid way of making the enemy retreat.

"So the enemy was no match for the gods. Naturally. Would Nobunaga that bastard have retreated too?"

"...No."

Takaya was on alert.

"Yuzuru is still here. I can sense him."

"Narita is here?"

Takaya nodded. At this instant, his sensory capacity was even more keen than that of a third-rate soul investigator.
The vehicle stopped in front of the treasure hall, Takaya and the others entered the shaden.
It seemed like Satsuki had been rescued by Tomo without any complications. They did not see any trace of her. Chiaki and Ayako followed behind Takaya, they came to the shaden from the Western corridor.

"!"

Looking into the hall of worship, Takaya and the others could not help but gasp.
They did not believe anyone would be inside the hall of worship, but there was the form of a person.
It was a young man. He sat cozily in a large, gorgeously decorated chair in front of the altar with his legs crossed.

"Welcome, men of Uesugi."

Takaya and the others stared at him.

"Narita..., Nobunaga!"

Yuzuru smiled craftily. Chiaki and Ayako, surprised, braced themselves, but Takaya only calmly returned his gaze without flinching.

"So you're here as we've expected."

"Haha, it was you who took advantage of my absence to call upon the three deities of Itsukushima shrine wasn't it? I really can't take you guys lightly, annoying rats."

The menacing aura that Nobunaga emanated compelled Chiaki and Ayako into silence. Owing to Nobunaga's return, the power of the three deities had apparently been suppressed once again.

"Word has it that every single deity here is a goddess. Haha, it really makes one feel at ease. It doesn't mean much to have a common woman serve me, but to be able to overpower the goddesses and the rest of the world, only I, Nobunaga, am capable of that right?"

Nobunaga laughed haughtily.

"Just like the almighty Zeus."

"..."

"My soldiers seemed to have provoked the goddesses, making them unhappy. It can't be helped, all of them are but vulgar folks who don't understand manners. They can only fight and are incapable of anything else besides that, what a bother. So I allowed them to withdraw beforehand."

Nobunaga sat up slightly, he grasped his knees with his hands as he looked ahead.

"Thus all those people that would disturb us are not here anymore, Kagetora."

"..."

"I've always wanted to have a long hearty talk with you, and appreciate your tiger eyes at the same time. I've been waiting for you in this place for quite a while, haven't I?"

"We have nothing to discuss."

Kagetora coldly replied.

"Release Yuzuru at once."

"Don't be so anxious."

Nobunaga hummed with his nose and smiled.

"It was really delightful just now. All of your powers were expressed right. But to exhaust all your powers like that in one go, you probably can't even release an incantation now. You look pale, no? Are you having much difficulty with just standing up?"

Takaya glared at him sharply like a ferocious beast.

"I asked you to release Yuzuru."

"It's okay to not exert yourself. After all it's impossible for you to fight me. Even if you want to die, don't be so anxious."

"You...!"

"If I say 'No' what are you going to do about it?"

Nobunaga made the first move to gain the upper hand, he uttered maliciously.

"What if I said I won't leave him. Haha, want to kill me? Alright. Go ahead and try. You would only kill Narita Yuzuru."

"...!"

"Can you kill your own friend?"

Takaya ground his teeth in agony.

"Even if I have to use a katana to cut it out, I will dig it out...!"

"Unfortunately for you, the 'Seed of Evil Kings' can't be eliminated with just the death of the physical body. It has already deeply planted itself within the soul."

Nobunaga said as he slowly stood up, looking at them with an arrogant expression as he spoke.

"Come. What are you going to do, Kagetora?"

"..."

"I'll let you do whatever you please. What are you doing? Aren't you going to expel me from Narita Yuzuru's body right away? What's wrong? Can't move?"

An egoistical smile appeared on Nobunaga's face, he walked towards them. One step, then another. The three of them felt threatened, and could not help but retreat backwards. If their opponent was Yuzuru, they could not act.

"Hmph, the three of you can't do anything? You're completely dispirited now because you've been used to having it easy! All of you are truly degenerate at the end of the day, Uesugi Yashashu!"

"Damn you!"

"Stop, Chiaki!"

Not heeding Takaya's command, Chiaki attacked with an incantation. Nobunaga lightly extended his right hand in an unconcerned manner to defend himself with a Goshinha. Sharp plasma broke out, the bamboo screens were blown about violently.

"Ha---ha ha! This degree of an attack! It is but child's play!"

"A Touketsu Nami! It's the only way to freeze that Seed!"

"Wait... Chiaki!"

"Attack, Haruie!"

Shielding Takaya, Chiaki and Ayako concentrated their powers in their fingers and released the incantation at the same time!

"Ha!"

Boom!
The two of them fired a straight, skin-piercing line of Touketsu Nami at Yuzuru's forehead. But Nobunaga did not move at all.

"What an insignificant technique!"

Their incantations were reflected back, directly striking Chiaki and Ayako.

"Nnhh!"

Both of their bodies traced an arc as they were thrown backwards onto the hirabutai, they collapsed onto the floor in this way.

"Haruie! Nagahide!"

Nobunaga, wanting to chase Takaya who ran towards them, leaped to a great height. His body flew in midair, right over Takaya's head, and landed right in front of him.

"!"

Nobunaga obstructed him, startling Takaya. Then, with a speed faster than thunder can reach the ear, he grabbed the folds of Takaya's clothing and single-handedly tossed him over to the floorboards fiercely.

"Nnhh ahh!"

Takaya's body went past the stage, flung to the dock overlooking the sea, he tumbled onto the boards heavily, then he curled up at that place and ceased to move.

Nobunaga jumped again, and silently landed on the takabutai. He folded his arms, stepped lightly on the floor as if he was floating, and laughed fearlessly as he looked over Takaya.

"What an awful sight, Kagetora!"

Takaya, enduring the severe pain, lifted his head. His eyes were burning with loathing.

"Damn... it...!"

"You can't even use your powers to protect your body? Hmph, how pitiful."

Chiaki and Ayako could not move owing to their extensive injuries. Nobunaga got down onto the floor, a fiendish smile hung from his mouth as he approached Takaya.

"What now? Let's see you resist?"

Threatened in this way, Takaya retreated one step backwards. Nobunaga slowly advanced, driving Takaya to the edge of the dock.

"What are you going to do? Strike back at me? You don't even have any strength to attack with spells?"

"..."

"Revealing that scared expression..."

Nobunaga mercilessly narrowed his eyes.

"There's nothing more comfortable than seeing the frightened expression of a fierce beast. Compared with holding a woman, making a strong person submit is the moment of my climax."

Retreating backwards, the base Takaya's foot struck against the pillar of the stone lamp, he fell backwards against the column. This was the end of the dock, there was no other place to run to. Below was the high tide. Takaya stared at Nobunaga with hostility, his eyes filled with the fortitude of his entire body.

"There's no mistaking that pair of eyes."

Nobunaga uttered with glee.

"What's the matter? Come, make me feel a little bit more. Satisfy me a little bit more. I won't just simply kill you. I won't let you die so easily!"

Takaya recited an incantation. Clenching his teeth he used his full strength to call upon Yuzuru. Wake up. Resist Nobunaga.

"I will subject you to every single torturous method of interrogation I can think of. Let me hear all of your whimpers. After you die, I will paste gold foil on your skull. Use it as a luxurious wine cup. Then fill it with blood-red wine and drink it all in one go...!"

Yuzuru!

Nobunaga concentrated his powers in his hand!

"Come, make me happy, Kagetora!"

"!"

An intense incantation exploded out. Takaya reflexively used a 'Wall' to resist it. The Nen Nami ruptured, sharp plasma spurted out. But Nobunaga was merciless.

"No need to struggle, Kagetora!"

At that moment, Nobunaga's upper body suddenly shook.

What...!

A pain that nearly made him want to rip his skull apart ran through his temples. Nobunaga held his head and struggled in agony. It was that headache. That fierce headache attacked Nobunaga again.

"Nnhh Ah... Ahhh!!"

"Yuzuru... Yuzuru is that you!"

"Damn... it... Narita Yuzuru!"

"Yuzuru...!"

"Don't hinder me ahhh!"

Take advantage of the current situation!

Takaya moved into action. Amassing all of his remaining strength he released a Touketsu Nami...!
But Nobunaga was not so careless as to allow him to do that.

"I won't let you succeed!"

Slam!

The air shook, Takaya's Touketsu Nami and Nobunaga's Nen Nami collided directly.

"...!"

The Touketsu Nami was scattered. Nobunaga's incantation was overwhelmingly strong.

"Nnnh Ahh!"

Nobunaga did not release his hold on Takaya, he [Takaya] had became vulnerable within that split second...!

"The one who will die is you, Kagetora!"

Will be struck...!

Then at that moment.

The seawater behind Takaya suddenly erupted like a geyser...!

"What!"

Nobunaga widened his eyes. At the same time, a white shape appeared behind Takaya, controlling Takaya's arms. Takaya could not understand what was going on at all. He could only sense that there was something behind his back flaming brightly, his entire body heated up all of a sudden.
In the next moment, Takaya's hands released a Touketsu Nami...!

"!"

The white ball of light shot through Nobunaga's forehead.
Yuzuru's body was forcefully thrown backwards, he collapsed onto the floor of the takabutai with a 'thud'.

Wh...at...!

Takaya did not understand what had happened. That attack did not come from Takaya's own willpower. He obviously did not do anything, however he had attacked with a Touketsu Nami!

How can this be...

Chiaki, lying prone on the ground, had witnessed the white form behind Takaya at that moment.

That... is...

Chiaki, with a blurred vision, had positively seen the shadow of a man. The person that stood behind Takaya, had worn a white hood and had the military appearance of a souhei.
Chiaki knew the name of that man.

-Kenshin... kou...?

The seawater that sprouted to a great height poured down on Takaya's head like rain.
The figure of Uesugi Kenshin was screened by the seawater, and slowly faded away.
Drenched by the seawater, the floorboards gradually moistened. Yuzuru's body, lying on the floor, was also soaked in water. The 'Seed of Evil Kings' was frozen for the moment, Nobunaga's remote control was completely cut off.

Takaya sat down and dully stretched his legs. He did not seem to notice that his entire body was drenched with water, but sat there in this condition without moving.
The floorboards were wet. The spray of seawater did not stop, like an evening shower it pelted his entire body.
Takaya still did not budge.
In this way, the spray of water that persisted for several minutes gently weakened, then it finally disappeared...
Leaving behind a mist.

***

In that long period of time, he waited in this way.
Takaya did not hold Yuzuru either, he only sat with an empty expression in his eyes.
In the shaden that was incomparably quiet, there was no sound of human activity besides the rumble of the waves that thrashed on the outside.

Is it over...?
Takaya thought ignorantly.

Is this how everything ends?

It is the end. Somebody replied.
Is this really the end? Takaya asked the owner of the voice.

[Yes...]

A female voice replied.

[It has ended...]

The voice echoed in the entire shaden at that moment.
A large bird landed on the takabutai. Huge and crimson in color. Like a peacock... It was the illusion of a bird, what was known as the spiritual bird of the legendary phoenix.
Takaya could not make any sound, he only opened his eyes.
Takaya knew the true identity of that bird.

[Thank you...]

The red phoenix said. That tone was pleasing to the ears, causing one to feel that the female voice did not belong to this earth. The voice permeated the depths of his heart, it was exceedingly beautiful to listen to.

That is the voice of the goddess, Takaya thought in this way.
Such a sacredly beautiful timbre existed in her voice.
Takaya did not know her appearance when she was still a human. Neither did he know how big of an appraisal her beauty had won from the people. But Takaya felt the soul of this phoenix to be extremely beautiful.

[You can sleep now...]

Yeah. Takaya answered, calmly closing his eyes.
I understand everything.
Takaya murmured, thereafter the beautiful red phoenix spread its wings. On her back appeared a smaller bird, but it was extremely similar in appearance. The phoenix led the younger phoenix to the sky, unfolding its wings. The smaller phoenix followed, flying behind.

The goddesses stretched their wings and soared. They circled around the summit of Mt. Misen and flew towards the Western sea that was dyed red by the sunset.
The view of them blurred. Takaya watched the phoenix disappear, then once again closed his eyes quietly.

It was calm.
The sound of the great waves battering against the harbor was audible.
The tender din of the waves.
As if the ripple of the waves wanted to infiltrate his heart.

Quietly...

About to awaken...

Feeling his body gradually turning cold, Takaya thought.

The nightmare is about to end...

He was about to return to the real world...
This inexhaustible, endless nightmare was about to end... He was about to wake up soon.
He could immediately return.

Return to the real world which has you.

You would definitely be waiting beside my pillow when I awaken. Then use that gentle voice of yours to say to me. --Are you awake?
He would always never fall asleep in front of him [Takaya]. Whenever he awakened, he would always be by his [Takaya] side, gazing at his appearance of having just woken up. It has always been this way. He was always beside his pillow waiting for him to wake up, even causing one to puzzle over when did he actually go to sleep.

This time it would definitely be the same.

Naoe---...

The next time I awaken, I can't say for sure but perhaps I would be crying out loud like a child. But you would be like a father... and proceed to comfort me.
With that pair of eyes filled with the utmost tenderness...
This nightmare is about to end. Not sure since when or where had reality been replaced by this startling dream. This frightening dream.

I wish to hear your voice soon...

Leaning against the column of the stone lamp, Takaya thought.

My body is so cold. My wounds hurt so badly. It's painful and terrifying, uneasy and cold, so hurry.
Don't let me stay in this sorrowful dream any further... I can implore you if you want.

Even if you hate me, please hurry.

It doesn't matter if it's not love. If that is the case, it doesn't matter if it's hatred.
Be it lust, or desperation.
Please return to my side...

The small waves bounced against the side of the harbor.
Allowing his extremely tired body to lean against the stone lamp,
Takaya's head drooped down.

This time when I wake up, we will be able to find it right? Naoe.

Our 'ideal' way of existence.
It must exist in a certain place. The ideal place, there must be one.
We have shed so much tears along the way. Always reflecting... We should be able to find it.

The sea, reflecting the radiance of the sunset, flickered brightly.
Thinking of the happy moment on the brink of arrival,
a faint smile formed at the corners of Takaya's mouth.
The waves were so tender.

I can hear it... Your voice...
