That night when Hagi city perished, the waves of Seto Nakai, the waters in the pool tossed and swelled more fiercely and violently than usual.
It became windy. The bonfires of the Shinto shrine of Itsukushima whipped about in the wind, then they were extinguished.
In the palace hall of worship, were the forms of Narita Yuzuru and Mori Ranmaru. Placed in front of the sacrificial altar, with this occasion, were gorgeous, high-backed Western-styled chairs, purely ornamental from the way it was constructed. Yuzuru sat on one of those chairs with his back towards the altar. Placed beside his feet was a crystal that emitted a radiance of seven colors.

"It must've been exhausting, Ran."

Nobunaga said, slowly crossing his legs.

"Not at all!"

"Ah, so this must be the renowned 'kanju'. Shikanosuke that bastard, I never unexpected that he would hide from me such an important object for his own use."

Nobunaga picked up the 'kanju'.

"A truly beautiful jewel. This is the 'Shiohirutama', rumored to be able to control the tides at the will of its owner. The divine jewels protected by Youkihi... they're still fairly mysterious."

Nobunaga looked like a child who had just acquired a new toy, examining the 'kanju' with a curious look, he laughed delightfully, placed the jewel in his hand and played with it as if it were a small rubber ball.

"I've gotten hold of a fascinating object. I'll definitely see how I can use it to deal with the Mouri. We should at least verify the legendary might of the jewel, shouldn't we?"

"Yes. But rumor has it that its powers cannot be unleashed with just the 'kanju' alone."

"Hmmm, don't worry about it, Ran. We have no need to rush ourselves, the 'manju' will deliver itself to our doorstep no doubt."

"My Lord?"

"The one who possesses the 'manju', will definitely come here to steal the 'kanju'. We only need to cheerfully sit here and wait for that person."

Nobunaga's eyes had not the slightest hint of perversion, resembling those of a child who was planning some mischief, instead of glinting like a wild beast.

"So, the Mouri suigun isn't our opponent. I couldn't care less about the 'Yamato', considering that it's such a large battleship, with no way of floating in the sea it's merely a piece of junk. In other words, everything is set. --Kuki."

"Yes!"

Kuki Yoshitaka answered, standing behind Ranmaru. He was one of Oda's generals, commander of the Kuki suigun. The incident involving the phantom ships at Osaka Bay's Shiranui, as well as the Oatakebune seen by Aida, all of those ships were commanded by him.

"It's time for you to appear on stage. Send out orders to Osaka Bay's Oatakebune regiment to make preparations. Let the squadron of Mouri's Tsukumogami warships know of our true abilities. Even though they're using modern navy vessels, the outcome will be unchanged as this is a conflict between spirits. The problem doesn't lie in the nature of the navy vessels at all. What's most important is that our spirits are our weapons. Not too long ago, we mercifully allowed them to escape from Osaka Bay, this time round we'll let them have a taste of our real strength."

"Understood!"

The truth about the Shiranui was that it arose from the ships of the Kuki and Mouri suigun. The two divisions had fought for control over the waters at Osaka Bay. Kuki had preserved his superiority, driving the squadron of Mouri's ships to the outer seas. The Mouri had also included the resurrected Tsukumogami 'wartime battleship' in their squadron of ships. Aida had seen all of that.

The fleet of Mouri's ships that retreated from Osaka Bay, anchored at the city of the Murakami Suigun -- Noshima, and once again restructured their military base of operations, planning out the 'Yamato' project.
Situated within the vicinity of the Geiyo archipelago was a relatively large group of islands, the narrow passageways meant that travel was restricted for a maritime vessel, for that reason a ship had no way of freely moving back and forth. Even though the Murakami Suigun had previously established the whole of Shimonoseki via these narrow boat routes, they could only collect taxes from the passage of vessels.
Anyone who could master the topography of the area, would clinch the authority over the waters of Seto Nakai. Even so, it was easier said than done.

The Oda, now allied with Itsukushima's Sue Harukata, had decided to carry out their assault from both the Eastern and Western sides, attacking Noshima from both flanks.

"It's about time we unleash our true power, Kuki."

Nobunaga leaned against the back of his chair, a bloodthirsty smile appeared on his mouth. Ranmaru called out 'Nobunaga-sama'.

"According to our spy intelligence, the navy solders that were summoned by the Mouri were not only recruited from Kure."

"So I heard. They're the soldiers who died in the Pacific War."

Little by little, Nobunaga revealed a grin.

"The masses of society are about to be alerted as a result of these disturbances. I heard that they intended to lure the souls of the navy soldiers that didn't completely cross to the other world onto the 'Yamato'. There are also the souls of those who went in search of their companions but were tempted by death instead."

"Was it really the Mouri who summoned their assembly as well?"

"It seems like it. Lately, the 'Yamato' has been hanging around this region floundering all over the place haphazardly, obviously beckoning the onryou to join them. I heard that the Mouri had announced to all those onryou who couldn't reach Buddhahood: 'Souls of the Navy soldiers, if you board the Yamato you shall be able to proceed to Faramita', or something like that."

The 'Yamato' was really a ship that welcomed them to journey to the Pure Land of the West...
But a considerable number of the souls of those who died had the moment of their deaths deeply planted within their memories.
Among the souls who 'died for their country', those that had served on the 'Yamato' had found a different meaning. The beaming unit of the flagship's fleet, the lofty unsinkable battleship of the Empire of Japan... Since an unknown period of time, this name grew more radiant in the hearts of the dead as the days passed by, taking this country which should not have lost the war... taking the history of this defeat that should not have occurred and transformed it into a completely subversive power.

"But however many people he involves, or tempts with death, it doesn't matter to us. Only,"

Nobunaga said, the expression in his eyes had turned sharp.

"I heard that the Mouri are planning to use the onryou concentrated at Kure as armor for the 'Yamato'? With regards to that matter, perhaps the greater their numbers the better for them, and we can't just sit here and ignore this."

"Does My Lord mean that the 'Yamato' must be prevented from entering Kure?"

"I'll leave that operation to you, Kuki. Don't let those onryou of Kure board the 'Yamato'."

A dangerous smile appeared on Nobunaga's face. That was one of Nobunaga's distinctive features, the fiendish and merciless smile.

"If those onryou of Kure wish to fight, then let them become soldiers of the Oda instead. Regardless of the era, no soldier can't escape that sort of fate. Let me rescue them. Let them serve me, the 6th Demon King. Ran."

"Yes."

"Tomorrow morning, gather the troops at Senjokaku. Although the shrine that Hideyoshi built had a good start but a lousy ending, and is unpleasantly disordered, it's still good enough to serve as a military resting place. I want to hold a discussion with the armed forces there."

"Understood!"

"I really can't wait. I really want to try out this Narita Yuzuru's powers as soon as possible."

Nobunaga looked like a dictator, resting both his elbows on the arm rests and leaning against the back of his chair.

"The 6th Demon King combined with Miroku Bodhisattva's powers. This time, I want everyone in this world to know me well."

* * *

The darkness transmitted a huge wave of sounds.
Takaya stood in the darkness listening to the imaginary noises.
The din seemed to come from the middle of the great waves. No, was it the wave itself? His exhausted heart could no longer distinguish between the tones. It was calling to him.

Whose voice...

Smoothly and steadily, like the sound of the waves in his homeland lodged in his memories.

Who...

Like the rippling sound of the waves oscillating back and forth unceasingly. It gave him peace and also communicated with him.
It resembled his father's voice.
Seeping into his wound... The deep flow that was severed, mangled, torn to pieces, turning into an utter decrepitude inside his body... It felt like being tenderly cared for by a parent.
Hearing that sound, caused one to suffer to the point of... discomfort.
The discomfort finally transformed into true pain.
What exactly was this ache?
Even his fingertips were sore, unable to move. So much that he could not even open his eyes. His wound tingled. Like sulphuric acid. Eroding his torso. A scar that permeated his entire body. An unremitting agony. Expanding without any consideration. He felt almost numb.
He stretched out his fingers wanting to eliminate the pain, there was a gentle face that awaited.

Like the tenderness of the seas... Like the intense great waves...

--Takaya-san...

Like medicine to cure the wound. Echoing as it poured out onto the ground.

--Kagetora-sama...

The fingers that touched his cheeks, his strong fingers that gripped tightly. The hands that grabbed his body firmly transmitted his body temperature. As if telling him 'I am right here'.

Are you really here?

--I am right here.

A soft tender song that entranced him.

--It's alright.... Don't be afraid.

His name was called. Over and over again.

--I won't leave you all by yourself.

Yes.

I won't forget your promise.
You have sworn to me that you will not die.
You said that... you will not die.

Hoping for you to surround me.
With your love.
Hoping that your murmurings are all but a dream. Comforting me, this was only a temporary illusion. Then embrace me deeply.
Holding this cold, frozen physical body...

--I will always stay here.

This place was probably a warm room... A white bed in the quiet dead of the night. Beside me, on the pillow, you were saying:
After tonight I will never leave you again.
I won't let you be lonely.
When you have awakened from your dreams, I won't let you be lonely and helpless. I won't let you regain your consciousness only to find solitude.
Be it a stormy night, or a cold night.
Until dawn...

His tears flowed out.
The sound of the great waves rapidly grew louder as it approached.
The flap of the waves became fierce, raging and shattering as it went.

A man's fingers wiped away the tears that flowed out.

"Saburou-dono."

"..."

Called in this way, Takaya opened his eyes.
The first thing that appeared in his field of vision, was the black darkness of the night sky.
From then onwards, how long had passed?
Takaya found it difficult to recover his consciousness.
He was held by Kotarou. Takaya had opened his eyes while nestled within Kotarou's bosom, and was at a loss for a while.
Right beside him, was the shattering sounds of the waves.

"Do you recognize me? Saburou-dono."

At first, Takaya appeared to be unclear about everything. The clouded eyes looked at Kotarou's face for a moment, he finally moved his lips after a long time.

"-Ko...ta..."

A wee voice like the buzz of a mosquito.

Even so, Kotarou's anxious face immediately displayed an expression of relief.

"You still recognize me, Saburou-dono."

"This... place..."

Only his eyes looked about, Takaya asked in his muddled predicament. Kotarou answered.

"This place not far off north from Hagi. The region is called Susa. How do you feel? Do you feel unwell anywhere?"

"..."

Takaya's body was resting on a flat vast outdoors. This place was a cliff, occasionally a spray of water came from the white foam of the waves that crashed against the rocks. He could not see any stars in the night sky, they were concealed by the dense clouds, bringing about a gray darkness.
The coasts of this region had a strip of what one called the hornfel fault, its location made inaccessible by a break in the cliff. Kotarou and Takaya were now in a place known as the Senjojiki Rock Tableland.
Takaya covered his face with his hands, and slowly started to think back. He wanted to ask Kotarou why he [Takaya] was here, but did not understand why his words came out soundlessly from his mouth.

"Ah..., ah....ah?"

He could not make any sound. Takaya anxiously opened his mouth, gesturing to Kotaro to help him.

"...voice..."

Kotarou looked at Takaya.

"You cannot speak? Saburou-dono. You have lost your voice?"

"Ah...ah..."

Even though he could form sounds, he could not articulate any words. No matter how hard he tried it was useless. Apparently, due to the violent and excessive outpour of his spiritual strength, his communicative ability was now impeded.

"Ah...hi..."

"Please stay calm. Don't be anxious, use your fingers."

Kotarou placed Takaya's fingers on his hand, gesturing to him to write out on his hand. Takaya managed with difficulty to trace a few words.

What, happened?

Takaya asked him.

"We fled from the large fires of Hagi city. You could not control your 'power', before I was nearly engulfed by the flames triggered within you, I saved you and brought you here."

Takaya trembled, widening his eyes.

Saved... me?

Takaya faced Kotarou uneasily. His pair of eyes resembled those of a small rabbit in great fear, causing one's heart to ache.

Kotarou restored his consistently expressionless face.

"Hagi city is lost. Mouri Terumoto's body is dead. Kikkawa Motoharu and the retainers of the Mouri clan have used the 'Yamato' to escape. I believe they are proceeding directly to Itsukushima."

"..."

"Naoe Nobutsuna is dead."

Kotarou uttered without any emotion.

"The bullet pierced straight through his heart. I believe you were at the scene of his death. I have cremated his remains."

"..."

Takaya stared at him wide-eyed. Not blinking even once. He pursed his lips together.
His expression had completely deadened.
Kotarou watched Takaya's change in manner attentively.

"Please... you must pull yourself together."

"..."

"Saburou-dono."

Forcefully moving away, plasma emitted from Takaya's fingers, his hand slid out of Kotarou's. Like an empty shell. The focus in his eyes grew murky and he could no longer see anything.

"I understand your feelings."

Kotarou uttered with a cold formality.

"But, hereafter there are still many tasks that you need to accomplish. If you still hold the status of a general, then please pull yourself together. Endure the death of your subordinate and continue to fight, this should be the way of a liege. As long as you are Uesugi Kagetora in this day, it is vital for you to handle the numerous issues that require your implementation. For example, the Oda."

"...!"

"Do you not want to recover Uesugi Kagekatsu from Oda Nobunaga's hands?"

In the depths of Takaya's eyes, Kotarou truly saw the radiant will even though it was only for a tiny flash of an instance.

"Isn't this the mission you accepted from Kenshin? So that Kagekatsu-kou, who was also an adopted son, would not feel resentful from having been used. For the sake of this mission, you underwent possession up until this very body. We have understood everything."

Then Kotarou, with an honest expression, stressed with words full of confidence.

"Uesugi Kagekatsu is the Miroku Bodhisattva."

Takaya shut his eyes. In manner of having given up hope, his head drooped with his eyes closed.

"Narita Yuzuru is the manifestation of the Miroku Bodhisattva. He is destined to be the future Buddha, recipient of one of the highest abodes in heaven. Your mission is to personally guard his astonishing power from malice is it not? Aren't you supposed to protect his soul, which is going to rescue the future, from the clutches of the devil?"

"..."

"Please lift your head, Saburou-dono."

Takaya hesitated, he continued to turn his face away.
Kotarou once again voiced out strictly.

"...lift your head and look at me, Saburou-..."

The words that came from his mouth, were no longer Kotarou's. Takaya stared in amazement, someone had borrowed Kotarou's body and began to speak.

"There are people waiting for you."

Takaya expelled his breath.

"Can you walk? Saburou..."

His eyes opened widely, Takaya's lips quivered. Takaya knew the person who was talking. He was thinking 'how can it be'. But apart from this, he could not find any other explanation.

Father...

Kotarou nodded, looking startled and wanting to move closer to Takaya to support him, he stretched his fingers in the direction of the sea. Takaya gazed in that direction and could not help but gasp.
Above the great flapping waves, in the dark night sky...
Was a large dragon.

The dragon was swaying slightly, the trunk of its body twinkling with a silver luminosity, with both its perfectly straight emerald eyes gazing at Takaya.

This was, without a doubt, Ujiyasu. In the mist over Chuzenji Lake, his father Ujiyasu, who in possessing this body had the beautiful appearance of a dragon god, was looking at him.
The dragon regarded Takaya with a peaceful expression.

[I wish to take you back, Saburou...]

Ujiyasu said.

At this moment, Takaya, who previously could not articulate, spoke for the very first time.

"Father..."

The shattering great waves turned into a spray that flew high across his eyes, momentarily obscuring the situation in front of him. The spray became a mist that the wind brushed away, descending on Takaya's body.

[I must take you back to the people who need you by their sides.]

Takaya painfully squinted. He pressed his lips together, then opposed by closing his eyes.

[What is the matter, Saburou...]

The voice was like one that came from the body of the sea.

[Stand up.]

Takaya knew that his eyes had suddenly grown moist. It was like a father encouraging his youngest child. Takaya had no way of enduring and turned his face away. He wrinkled his eyebrow, drooped his head, once he closed his eyes tears easily slid down his cheeks.

[Stand up.]

But Takaya shook his head. He desperately shook his head continuously. As if saying 'No'.

[...Saburou.]

"Why..."

Takaya continued to shake his head, his entire body writhing as he shouted out.

"Why...!"

Ujiyasu replied in a strict tone of voice.

[There are people who need you.]

Takaya's two hands, quivered at length. Why was it that having reached this stage there were still people who needed him? He could not stand anymore. But why was it that he had to stand? Takaya could not understand.

[Stand up, Saburou.]

His father's voice carried into his ears.
Takaya refused. He shook his head intensely, and groaned.

"...Let me... die..."

Tears slid down his face.

"Please... let me die..."

Ujiyasu did not answer.
Takaya's four limbs that pressed against the ground suddenly lost their strength. He could not bear it and curled up.

--Don't be afraid...

He heard Naoe's voice.

--It's alright. Don't be afraid.

Naoe...

Takaya desperately listened to the voice of Naoe that he heard from within him.

Return to my side...

--I am by your side.

Gently caress me...

--It's alright...

You're not here!

Takaya cried out, desperately groping in the void. Struggling with a grief-stricken spirit he sought for his feeling in the darkness. Like a blind kitten.

--Don't be afraid.

Takaya replayed that moment when he heard the deep low voice over and over again. It was not that he wanted to repeat it. He only yearned to hear his voice.

Naoe...!

--I love you.

Hold me...

I want your voice. I want your body.
Closing his eyes as he cried, clenching his teeth.

--Yes. Until dawn.

Embrace me tightly!

--I will always be here.

Your taste, your touch,
Your body...

I want to die.
I want to just die like this.
Let me die...!
--You can't die.
Let me die, Naoe.
--You must not die.
Even if I can no longer breathe...!
--Because I love you.
Take me with you. Take me together with you.
A mad scream from the depths of his soul.
If you really love me...!

I want you.
I don't want anything else. Other than you, there's nothing else that I want. Other than you, there's no other valuable object that exists in this world. Whatever moment in the endless passage of eras, what I need is just you alone. Even though I know that I've obtained you, I must deepen my claim over you.
I will die if I lose you. I will die if you disappear. I will die if you abandon me. I have believed this all along. Yes. Now I can no longer carry on living. I am dependent on you like this. Deeply dependent on you like this.
I can't breathe if I don't have you to rely on. So excessively profoundly reliant on you, that I can't stand on my own. So excessively in need of you, that I'm frightened to the extreme. So afraid and terrified to the extreme that I'm clutching you tightly. Continuously seeking for you.

Hold me.

Hoping for you to desire me. It doesn't matter if you violate me. Violate me, abuse me until I die yet still desire me, even if it becomes dreary you must embrace me endlessly. Give me an embrace with only suffering. Pierce me continuously until my entire body is covered in blood, never leave me even if I become comatose, repeating this several dozen several hundred times over continuously, profoundly fiercely, I want your burning flesh!
Nearly dead... Even in death... Until death... Because of death..., I want to die... let me die!

Takaya, close to madness, hissed in perpetuity, his gestures and speech ever-changing.

Already... on the verge of death!

--Going mad like this...

It's becoming unbearable...

The great waves billowed, the white spray erupted wildly across the inaccessible precipice.
The darkness of the sea was like a fiendish object that howled madly.
Slowly.
Takaya stood up like a doll. Like the blaze of a sun, shaking as he stood up, he quietly straightened his back, opening his eyes that were heavy with dried tears.
Kotarou was astonished. He honestly did not expect that Takaya would be able to stand up on his own.
But Ujiyasu had noticed.
At the moment the last teardrop had been shed, the heavy door to his soul had calmly reversed its hurtful collapse.
Like a body that recovered from its extreme frailty.
Takaya closed his eyes like a tired child, accepting everything and faced the sky.
Takaya no longer resisted anyone, or anything.
As though he had abandoned this instrument of an empty physical body. Takaya said.

...Take me there.

Ujiyasu calmly gazed at his own child.

Perhaps, it had to be this way...
If he did not entrust his body to a certain person,
He would just die like that.

The flapping sound of the waves was endless.
Anticipating the arrival of a fiery tempest, the Sea of Japan surged in a violent frenzy.
The drops of water showered down from the spray. Kotarou approached him closely from behind.

"Ujiyasu-sama wishes that you ride on his back."

Kotarou said.

"Ujiyasu-sama will take you to the place you need to go to. Once you arrive at your destination, you must complete the tasks that you have been assigned."

"..."

"Let's go. Saburou-dono."

The spray from the great waves covered the area.
Takaya's eyes were like lead weights. As though he was controlled by an unseen object, he slowly walked towards Ujiyasu.
All that his ears could hear, was his voice which became a distant illusory sound that echoed over and over again.

--I will stay here.

Until the time you awaken...

--I will always stay by your side.

The large dragon was waiting for him.
The white spray spurted intensely across the precipice.

***

- a new day
- drove speedily all through the night from Akiyoshidai, Ayako and Tomo have reached Miya-jima
- they wait for their contact's ship to sail in, to reach Miya-jima; it gets windy
- Ayako mutters while trying to restrain her hair from being blown about by the sea winds
- notes the astonishing spiritual atmosphere of the beautiful mountains
- not deserving to be Oda and Sue's base of operations
- Miya-jima actually out of bounds but some can enter with license; but entering Itsukushima jinja is completely prohibited
- Ayako wanted Tomo to hide herself since they were like sneaking into enemy territory
- Tomo nods; she had come a few days ago to investigate the circumstances so she's familiar with the area (she actually came to see her sister)
- Isari now lived with Amako as a dependent, they wonder if it'll be alright should they bump into her
- Tomo is confident that Shikanosuke will help if she entreated and showed the manju in her possession; Isari will just stand by silently
- Ayako surveys the archway of Itsukushima jinja, knows that place to be Oda's base of operations
- Nobunaga could easily wreck havoc if he wanted to with this situation at hand, afraid that he might not abandon Yuzuru's body, he would not give it up
- they see a villa on the beach; the kanju should be there

***

- Amako's lodging was situated to the east of Itsukushima shrine, on a plateau
- heading up the steep slope was a single road that led to the door of the villa; Ayako noticed a different sensation once they arrived; nobody was home?
- it could not be there was no one home in this urgent situation but then there wasn't a hint of breath of person within
- Ayako wonders if they shifted but Tomo thinks the situation a bit strange; they kick down the door
- a few men collapsed over; there were people lying all over inside the room, they must be Amako's subordinates, were they attacked by outsiders? but no external wounds could be seen, they looked more like they'd been hypnotized to sleep
- they wonder who did this; in the courtyard the doors to the Inari shrine were wide open, there were many footprints on the on the vermilion-colored floor of the ancestral temple
- Ayako also found many pebbles dispersed on the floor that emitted a dark radiance; she had seen this somewhere before... the same sort of pebbles enclosing some shrine, but this was placed here by someone intentionally, a kekkai...a kekkai that absorbs one's powers (kyuuryoku kekkai)!
- Ayako shoves Tomo behind her and concentrates her powers in her hands in circular pattern then expands it
- she blasts at the kekkai, there is an intense sound and plasma is given off, then the protective shield shatters like glass, the pebbles on the floor give off sparks and burn into smoke and ash, the 'energy-absorbing kekkai' is smashed, Ayako carefully conducts a spiritual examination
- after checking everywhere, she touches the white fox idol, they can now move in
- they pull on the figurine, the Sue system was like a hand, they could only enter after this, the scented treasure box started to slide, revealing an entrance with a ladder that descended down; they head down
- they find Isari and Satsuki beside the altar and rush towards them
- Satsuki is the first to wake, she doesn't recognize Ayako at first but the latter reminds her of their meeting at a restaurant in Hiroshima with Takaya; Satsuki then sees Tomo and heads over and hugs her, calling out Narumi, and starts crying; Tomo is a bit shocked and doesn't really know what to do
- Satsuki is Narumi's good friend, the former had been worried about Narumi, Ayako explains; Tomo tells Satsuki that Narumi is well and right here, Satsuki is confused; Ayako explains that Narumi had allowed 'Youkihi' to temporarily use her body
- Isari regains consciousness sees her sister; Isari pushes Tomo away, wants to kill her, burn her face back and attacks Tomo
- Satsuki shields Narumi's body from Isari's attack; Isari is stunned
- Isari notices Ayako, finds out that she is one of the Uesugi yashashu and demands to know why are both of them here
- Ayako tells her to calm down and recall what happened there; only Mori Ranmaru was capable of setting up that sort of kekkai
- Isari remembers with a sudden outburst of emotion, scaring Satsuki, Isari feels a bit sorry for her behavior
- the kanju had been taken by the Oda, Satsuki had been hypnotized, Isari blames herself for being careless
- Satsuki panics, Isari, very hot-headedly, reprimands her and wants to storm Itsukushima shrine to recover the jewel
- Tomo tells her not to overestimate her (Isari) own strength; she was not going to get very far by just attacking Oda's base by herself; if the kanju and manju fell into Oda's hands, it won't be just a problem for the Mouri and Amako but Japan would be in peril, in fact any place with a sea can be controlled by Oda
- Ayako only then realizes the true frightening potential of the jewels
- the jewels can actually control any liquid; not just the seawaters but even bodily fluids; by controlling the tides and ebbing of the sea, it could turn land into sea or vice versa, as long as the controller had the intention, he could even submerge the entire land, no naval fleet would be able to stand against him
- Tomo reprimands her sister for impulsively making use of the kanju for war, if she didn't the jewel wouldn't have fallen into Nobunaga's hands
- Isari yells back that she has no reason to listen to her (Tomo's) advice; she had once said that the next time she sees Tomo, she will kill her sister; she then asks Ayako about their promise, that Ayako will kill her once she had gotten hold of the manju
- Ayako states that circumstances have changed, she can't just kill Tomo now; Tomo once again silences Isari by telling her that she's free to kill her once this matter is over but not now, they needed to retrieve the kanju
- Ayako is not very optimistic about the situation (needing to recover the kanju); Satsuki is feeling dejected since she feels that everything is her fault for simply interfering, asks Narumi if she's angry, feels that she's now responsible for getting back the kanju
- Satsuki makes her way out but suddenly Narumi appears again and they hug and apologize to each other
- then Satsuki's expression abruptly changes to a cold look; she pulls Narumi's body over and mercilessly punches her in the abdomen; Narumi falls to the ground in pain and passes out

- after Narumi had run out after Satsuki, Isari learns that Tomo has brought the kanju to Itsukushima; Ayako requests that she lend her assistance but then Isari suddenly rushes towards the ladder

- when both of them reach the surface, it's already too late; Narumi fallen, Satsuki is nowhere to be seen
- Satsuki, with a group of Oda's subordinates, has taken the manju; Ayako and Isari attack and try to give chase
- but landmines start exploding underneath; entire ancestral temple explodes before being completely demolished; they establish a Goshinha to endure it
- Ayako is slightly at a loss, Isari wants to attack Oda's base at Isukushima immediately but Ayako says that it's too rash an action
- Tomo seeks the advice of Youkihi; there's only one way left and that is to head to Mount. Misen (at that time, Tomo had also mentioned this to Takaya and the rest)
- at first, Takaya and the rest were wondering if Narumi's body was at Mount. Misen; Isari also suspected if the 'manju' was hidden at Mount. Misen; but these were not the answers - what sort of meaning was hidden in the words 'Head to Mount. Misen'?
- Tomo requests for Ayako's assistance to exorcise any of Oda's subordinates at Misen
- the new plan is to drive the Oda out of Misen then destroy the kanju and manju before the Oda can make use of it for evil purposes; the three of them set out, Isari still intent on killing Tomo

- Ayako's all set to go with her gear, being the fit person that she is
- Narumi is a 'young lady'
- they estimate that they should've reached their target
- Ayako refers to map and determines position with compass, if her calculations are correct they should be 300m from Taishou cave
- never expected that they'd encounter problems, caves were ever-changing after all
- notes complex network of stalactites, thinks that it'd be easy for any ordinary person to get lost inside
- Ayako thinks of Narumi's views and becomes almost reluctant to push through, but she fancies they had more problems the previous time, they had already been underground for nearly 20 hours
- Narumi notes that Ayako must really tough; Ayako casually brushes off her compliment
- at the very least, Ayako had knowledge of survival skills, but doesn't know how to handle her gear...
- originally wearing a sailor outfit, Narumi is now wearing a canvas jacket and dark blue trousers with boots
- knapsack that Ayako was carrying was stuffed with food and all sorts of props, that was how they managed to explore this far
- hears water running across ground, they were almost beneath the enemy camp now; looks at watch
- there was still about another hour before the next high tide, they had to carry out battle preparations within the time
- Narumi notes that it's fortunate the sect above ground hadn't took notice of them yet
- Ayako asks how does she know; Narumi: 'Youkihi' said so, Ayako: Narumi.
- Ayako sits on a nearby stalagmite, looks at Narumi's face seriously
- asks who 'Youkihi' really is and that it can't be the real Youkihi, Narumi looks a bit troubled
- Ayako wants to know her real motives, that person knows everything about Kagetora and the Uesugi, does this 'Youkihi' have something to do with the Mouri
- Narumi is silent, seems to have some discourse with the internal spirit then nods
- Narumi informs Ayako that she (Youkihi) would like to explain the situation and will now take over her (Narumi) body
- the switch is done and the childish expression of Narumi is gone, replaced by the look of a matured woman
- Ayako understand that Youkihi has come forth, asks if she is the latter
- Youkihi states that her surname is Tomo, Kumagai Nobunao's daughter and is Kikkawa Motoharu's wife
- Ayako recognizes her timid manner, realizes that she's the court lady of the Shinjo anecdote, that is the shameful infamous daughter of Kumagai Nobunao
- Ayako unconsciously scrutinizes her but then apologizes
- Tomo smiles instead and asks Ayako if her scandal is so well known for Ayako to look at her like that
- Tomo says that she doesn't mind as she is used to it, many have given her a dirty look, there's no point in hurting herself by letting those gazes bother her
- Tomo no longer belongs to Kikkawa, but the servant of Youkihi the Sea Goddess
- Tomo was Motoharu's wife for 400 years but now she's no longer affiliated with the Mouri or the Kikkawa (they are history)
- she is now a member of Buddhism, she wants to recover the kanju and manju, which will be used to calm the seas, they can't be used as weapons for the war
- Ayako asks if the Youkihi Sea Goddess is the real Youkihi (the person)
- during the Tang dynasty in China, the Emperor Xuan Zong doted on Youkihi; according to the legend, although Youkihi died on the slopes of Ma Wei the truth was that she had crossed the seas and fled to Japan, passing the Tsugu peninsula
- but story had become a mere legend in today's world; in the legend, Youkihi died in Japan then her soul changed into a large scarlet bird as a result of missing her homeland, and flew over the vast sea back to her counry
- apparently Youkihi's transformation into the large bird was really her ascension to become a sea goddess
- Ayako: "The scarlet bird... the legendary red phoenix!" Ayako is amazed
- Kagetora and co. had seen a 'red phoenix' at Peace Memorial Park but that red bird was Tomo; she has been tracing Narumi to Hiroshima, Narumi's body was the best suited for her to depend on and she needed her spiritual strength at the same time
- previously she had a dispute with a certain person and at that time left Narumi's body so now she had to chase her down again and start from there again; she has the same form as Youkihi
- maybe Tomo was trying to be Youkihi or became her attendant thinking she'll receive some of her power and change her own soul into that form
- during that time she was the one who absorbed the vitality of those women who had done sorry things; she needs a lot of women's vitality; Youkihi would be able to turn the power from the hearts of young women into a huge God-like power; in order to recover the kanju and manju, she needed that sort of power
- Ayako asks if she was actually a family member of Youkihi's
- Tomo had been a sincere devotee of Goddess Youkihi when alive; after death she hopes she can offer all of her heart's power to Youkihi; she definitely won't let the treasures be taken by Motoharu and used as a tool in the Mouri conflict
- Ayako is worried, asks if it doesn't bother her that she's literally betraying her husband
- Tomo insists that she's not deliberately betraying him, she has no other alternative for this matter; feels that she can only be forgiven for her sins by devoting herself to a God
- Ayako is amazed as well as perplexed; Tomo is clutching her knees tightly
- Ayako asks what exactly are her sins; Tomo seems lost in a distant thought/memory then touches her face
- because she was ugly she was once a cunning woman, that's why she committed a lot of sins when alive, many cruel things; in order to be Motoharu's wife she even did frightening things to her own sister - she had burned her sister's face
- her sister, Asaji, younger by 3 years was a beautiful woman; Motoharu had come to her family as according to the matchmaker's words and everyone expected him to take her sister as his wife
- she remembers the night in the courtyard when she grabbed her sister's hair and pressed a burning torch onto her face, not having any feeling whatsoever despite her sister's screams and the smell of her burning skin, she had laughed instead
- their father had been at a loss but had no choice but to report the matter to Motoharu the next morning
- Motoharu had wanted everyone who knew of the incident to keep mum and keep this a secret, ordering Nobunao to remove Asaji from public view and let her reside on some remote mountain
- Motoharu then took Tomo as his wife; Tomo thinks maybe he pitied their family, or that he didn't dissolve his marriage plans because Tomo's actions threatened him or that maybe he feels partly responsible for what happened
- Motoharu had accepted Tomo's personality and characteristics and always openly introduced her as his wife to other people, telling her not to be afraid, taught her the Arts and the satisfaction of being knowledgeable, the value of discipline, and what was true beauty
- Motoharu had helped her find her confidence, filled the darkness in her heart with light thus she definitely would not intentionally betray him
- that said her sins are still there; according to legend Youkihi can also beautify any women who wants to be pretty, but the correct version (says Tomo) is that Youkihi can rescue the souls of those who are lost or in agony, she can convert the pain and negative energy of onryou into a beautiful (defensive) power
- Ayako: ...
- Tomo feels a bit sorry for using Narumi's body but she needs to recover those objects but begs Ayako to help her, after all they were both emissaries of a deity, to stop the ongoing war
- they don't intend to lose to Shimozura Rairen

*

- the internal and external sections of the Taishou caves are patrolled by souhei
- among them is Rairen, wearing a grey suit and silver eyeglasses, for the sake of the 'Yamato Plan' came from Hongan-ji to the Mouri to watch over the manju that Tomo is trying to recover and is responsible for Taishou caves; only one sect with the power to exorcise could stop him - the Uesugi
- in order to avert the Uesugi, he had made secret plans/traps
- Rairen is asked about the situation with Hagi
- he replies that early the next morning they will receive Terumoto's company on the Yamato that set out from Hagi; they plan to start the war early in the morning 3 days down the road; tomorrow they will set out with the manju, the following day they will have a meeting in Kure with Terumoto's company, tells subordinate to convey the message that tonight they need to make battle preparations
- subordinate withdraws and Rairen discusses with his aides the rumors about Kagetora surrendering to the Mouri, and that everything should be fine since Rairyu, who can't seem to wait to settle a score with Kagetora, is there
- Rairen walks down the steps of the limestone cave
- apparently Rairyu has had this unusual air around him since the incident in the capital, when he had been beaten by Kagetora, maybe he wanted payback
- Rairen thinks Rairyu is pretty tough, even though they had been obstructed by the tengu, this was the first time they suffered defeat so he was unsatisfied; but thinks it doesn't count since Kagetora had help from the tengu, except that he's never seen such an energetic Rairyu before
- Rairen heads to the place where the manju is stored, orders souhei to make preparations; the Lion's Rock, where saidan (altars) were set up all around and in the center was a small cabinet, in it was the image of the Amida nyorai and stored within it was the manju; it was time to employ the tool
- the marine forces of the Oda, sworn enemy of Amida, are about to be destroyed with the magical power of this jewel; Rairen is determined to crush Nobunaga this time, he faces the altar and starts to murmur

*

- Ayako concentrates and the circumstances of the scene appears in her head, she knows Rairen is present; the power of the manju is increasing rapidly
- it was the moment of the tide, not long before the peak will be reached, the power could now be unleashed, they should make use of this instant when they hadn't been spotted yet ... but how is two women going to attack an entire clan?
- there were at least 50 disciples on watch, even though half of them don't have a physical body, they were still a clan that Ayako needed to single-handedly exorcise
- use a cho baku muchi (discipline binding whip), even though it wasn't exorcism but at least the spirits would be bound and unable to move, after all their goal was to snatch the manju so this should be enough
- Ayako and Tomo start to squeeze themselves up a narrow crack, Ayako went first, it is a narrow dangerous slope, needing to tightly hold on to the rocks to pull up and use as footholds, and finally reach Taishou cave
- the cave is really bright, the limestone cavern is actually a tourist attraction, that's why it's completely illuminated; during the Sengoku Jidai, because they were afraid of the battles that broke out, the cattle herdsmen would hide their cows in this cave thus giving rise to the name 'Cave of the Hidden Cattle'; a limestone cave consisted of 5 stories
- Ayako begins with the chants; after chanting aloud the 6-words dharani, a shining bow appeared in Tomo's hands and in her right hand flames appeared that transformed into arrows; they attack, Ayako also unleashing her binding whip on the spirits

- Rairen soon learns of their arrival from the commotion

- the reaction of the clan was quicker than they anticipated thanks to their strict measures, Ayako and partner is soon surrounded by souhei, the soldiers came in waves like an avalanche; they defended themselves with the whip and spiritual arrows
- the manju was on the 2nd storey, but the numerous soldiers were in the way, the narrowness of the caves not helping the situation
- Ayako then takes out a small flute-like object from her knapsack, this is a stone flute made of the spiritual rock (rei ishi), there was Sanskrit painted on it; Ayako uses it to chant (a bit like a microphone); at the same time small scale-like dust particles with a radiance were emitted from Ayako's mouth
- Ayako: Bai!; in one breath bored a passage through, brushing away all the souhei that were obstructing their way; Ayako was blowing a spirit flute, the 'Stone Flute of the Heavenly Winds'
- they find the altar and cabinet but Rairen appears with a group of souhei

"What perfect timing, Uesugi!"

"!"

A voice from behind, Ayako turned around.

A man wearing a Western suit appeared from behind the boulder, together with a line of souhei. Ayako surveyed her opponent.

"Shimozura Rairen..."

"So you are the thief, hmph, even though I haven't the slightest idea what you people are conspiring, your efforts will be futile nonetheless."

"What did you say!"

"I suppose you are Kakizaki. Your lord, Uesugi Kagetora, has just surrendered himself to Mouri Terumoto-kou at Hagi."

"!"

Ayako was stunned but shouted back in a gruff voice.

"Surrender... how did that happen! Is Kagetora alright!"

"I heard that Kagetora-dono has abandoned the Uesugi and returned to the Hojo clan. He understood that Kenshin is an evil person, who is a menace to the world, and in order to overthrow Kenshin's authority has become our comrade."

"!"

Ayako was extremely shocked.

"What... did you say..."

"So what now? Kakizaki. If you're Kagetora-dono's subordinate, you have no reason to oppose us. We are comrades."

"Don't lie!"

Ayako did not believe it.

"Kagetora would not give up the Uesugi so easily! Did you people do something to Kagetora! ...Don't tell me you've taken Naoe hostage? Is that right?! Using Naoe as a hostage you've threatened Kagetora right! You wretches!"

"Whatever the reason, it doesn't matter. We absolutely require the 'manju' as a means of crushing the Oda. We are on the same side. In order to defeat the Oda we should combine our strength."

Tomo-hime watched Ayako and Rairen alternately in apprehension. Rairen looked at Tomo-hime.

"Is that you? Tomo-hime. I was wondering what you were up to slipping out of Akiyoshi-do, I never expected you would actually involve yourself in this foolish act. As Kikkawa-kou's wife, why would you commit this act of betrayal against the Mouri? Kikkawa-kou would be sorry to hear about this."

"Be quiet! You've had your motives all along! I definitely won't let you people exploit the 'manju' as a instrument for war! I am the emissary of the Goddess Youkihi! If you dare oppose me, you will suffer retribution!"

"Oh? The emissary of the Goddess of Mercy? Then we are the authoritarians from the Pure Land of the West - emissaries of Amida nyorai. If the Goddess of Mercy is a kenzoku to Amida nyorai, then we are of the same rank."

The pupils beneath Rairen's glasses twinkled.

"You are the one who will suffer retribution. You miscreant Shinjo court lady."

"...!"

Tomo-hime could not find any words for a refute.

"The game ends here. I must insist that you head back to Akiyoshi-do."

"You intend to hold us captive there?"

"It would be troublesome if I allowed you to repeat another one of your incomprehensibly foolish plans."

Rairen signaled with his jaw, and his aides approached to arrest the two of them. Ayako immediately sheltered her by pulling Tomo-hime behind her, and whispered.

"I'll hold them off. You get the 'manju'."

"Kakizaki-dono."

Ayako concentrated all the energy within her body in one breath.

"Even if Kagetora has surrendered, I will not give in, Shimozura Rairen!"

"What! Are you crazy, Kakizaki!"

"If this is it, all of you will follow me to hell!"

Finishing her words, Ayako took out the stone flute and blew into it with the strength of one full mouthful of air.

Phiii................

"Argghhh!"

From Ayako's body the characters 'Bai' of the Heavenly Winds came soaring out in all directions, blowing up a storm. Restricted by the extreme crushing pressure of the winds, Rairen could only protect his own body. As they began to withdraw, Ayako continued to strike with her 'Nen Nami'.

"Nnn.. oh!"

One after another, several of them were blown away. Rairen immediately executed a counterattack.

"Nnnh!"

Ayako created a Goshinha to protect Tomo-hime, with a madness akin to the mechanism of a gun, she retaliated with incantations. Behind her, Tomo-hime was desperately trying to focus her spirit.

"Toyato Ukoniya Mokoniya Choboniya Tanboni Anzyari Honzyariya..."

Tomo-hime chanted, it was the endless dharani of the Buddhist teaching of penance. To eliminate the hidden poisoning, to break down the evil thoughts that hindered the elimination of the hidden poisoning, which constitutes the third verse of the 6-words dharani.

Within this short space of time, Ayako with her stone flute and spells continued to fight back, causing Rairen and the others to keep a distance from them. But the enemy numbers were still too large, it appeared that Ayako could not hold them much longer.

"Tomo-hime, hurry up!"

"...Toshito Tokoniya Mokoniya Choboni Tanboni Oboki Mokoshi Funzyari..."

Tomo-hime centralized her spirit intensely, desperately chanting the shingon.

"Attack! Use our combined chants and attack!"

"Arghhhh!"

To repel the combined assault of the souhei, Ayako employed all of her strength to extend the Goshinha. There was a boisterous crackling sound in the cave, with white plasma flying all over, producing fierce sparks.

"Nnnnh!"

Ayako clenched her teeth. Tomo-hime was behind her, wholeheartedly chanting the mantra in an orderly fashion. From then onwards, there was a noticeable change in the area. The cabinet containing the image of Amida gradually began to emit a glimmer of light. Some kind of power was starting to swell from within.

"What!"

Rairen was aware of the transformation, but it was too late...!

"Kibishisu Nantori Hogyari Oruni Hokyuuri Mokyuuri Chobiri Soko!"

At the instant she finished chanting the verses of the 6-words dharani, Tomo-hime suddenly opened her eyes widely.
The flames that would give rise to a golden arrow kindled in her right hand. It was the female power of vitality. Tomo-hime drew her spiritual bow, pulling the bowstring with her full strength. She aimed at the cabinet and fired the spiritual arrow!

The golden spiritual arrow was directly sucked into the cabinet. And then, seconds later!

Ba-dum...!

There was an outburst of a booming sound, the door of the cabinet opened. Everyone that was present looked at it. Within the cabinet, the Amida image released golden rays of light.

"How can that be...!"

The wooden image of Amida could not bear the power contained within it, and fractured with a clapping sound.

"Ohh!"

The overwhelmingly dazzling radiance caused everyone at the scene to shade their eyes. There was a sun in that cabinet. That was a jewel that released an intense light.

Tomo-hime brought her palms together in a manner of worship and beseeched.

"Shiomitsutama, fill up with the ocean's floodwaters..."

Rumble rumble...

A strange howl could be heard from beneath, it was moving towards the area. A deep booming, shaking the earth, the sound of some large body that approached. What exactly was this sound?

"T-This is...!"

Then, the interior of the cave started to shake fiercely. Starting from the ground over which they were standing. Accompanied by an unusual clanging. The tremors increased in intensity. Fine sand particles began to stream down from the tops of the pillars.

What object was charging this way...!

Numerous mournful wails were transmitted from the lower levels. Intense groans could be heard as it drew closer, it sounded like a large sea of debris.

"Water...!"

"Run quick, run quickly!"

The sound of the shattering great waves could be heard from the bottom-most stories. A great mass of sea water was bubbling up from the earth, destroying the laccolith, an alarming flow of water flooded the domain.

Waaa....!

The atmosphere inside the caverns was dominated by chaos. With the deluge of racing currents pouring in, the space in the lower levels had been completely filled with water in the blink of an eye, then the water levels started to rise.

"Tomo-hime!"

"Take the 'manju'! Kakizaki-dono!"

The souhei were forcefully swept away in the eddies as a result of the rising waters that continued to climb upwards. The situation in the cave had fallen into panic.

"Calm down! Don't topple the 'manju'!"

Rairen shouted. Ayako and Tomo-hime took advantage of the confusion and crept towards the cabinet. Rairen clicked his tongue and attacked them with an incantation.

"I definitely won't let you succeed!"

There was a large thunderous explosion and the altar collapsed. Tomo-hime rushed out from the safety of Ayako's side and with audacity and resolution lunged forward, catching the 'manju' that tumbled out of the completely fragmented cabinet.

"I've got it!"

"The waters are approaching, Tomo-hime!"

The floodwaters that bubbled up from below had already risen to their knees. The souhei fought among themselves to escape. In a flash, the waters had reached chest level.

"We have to go!"

Unlike the people escaping the cave, Ayako and Tomo-hime migrated to the source of the water influx. They took a deep breath before diving into the water. Rairen did not reveal that he had actually noticed their escape.

"Damn it, are you trying to escape! Tomo-hime!"

Tomo-hime, holding the 'manju' she had effectively acquired, and Ayako submerged into the water, moving towards a different crevice. Using the 'Stone Flute of the Heavenly Winds' as a tube to supply oxygen they swam towards the exit. Although the water was fairly cold, they endured and waded through hastily.
Not long after, the insides of the cavern had been completely flooded save for the highest level.

They finally saw the water surface. Because the water temperature was too low, Tomo-hime's four limbs had grown numb and could not move, she gestured to Ayako for help. Ayako took notice, grabbed her hand and with her final strength pulled her upwards and together swam to the water surface.

"Ha...!"

Their faces broke out on the surface of the water. The pushing force of the torrents had stopped as well.

"Are you alright?"

"...fine..."

The two of them headed towards shallow waters, reaching dry land. This seemed to be the topmost level. There was a small path on the other side which appeared to be lead to the exit.

"We did it, Tomo-hime!"

Tomo-hime, holding the 'manju' firmly in her hands, nodded. The radiance had subsided, resuming its original appearance of a crystal tinged with the seven colors of the rainbow.
The two of them walked out. The sun had completely set in the west, the surrounding area was pitch black.

"What will you do next?"

"I'm going to Hagi. I have to save Kagetora and the rest."

"You want to go to Hagi? I wish to recover the 'kanju'. I need your powers."

She believed that the 'kanju' was still in Shikanosuke's hands.

How am I going to manage this...

Ayako was in a dilemma. The conditions of her mutual promise with Amako was to kill Tomo-hime once she had retrieved the 'manju' from her. However, if she got rid of Tomo-hime as accordingly, it would violate their seiyaku.

Which side should she prioritize?

She honestly found it difficult to decide. Ayako believed that she had to find out Kagetora's instructions before she could act on this matter.

"In short, I must save Kagetora. As soon as possible."

"Then I will go with you, Kakizaki-dono. I know the location of Hagi. I should be able to offer some help."

Then at that very moment.

Before the two of them, a beast of prey floated out of the ground.

"What!"

It was a golden tiger. No, this was not a true tiger. This was a reijuu. A divine tiger.

Tomo-hime, shocked, grabbed hold of Ayako's arm tightly. Ayako was cautious for an instant, then immediately discerned that this tiger did not harbor any malice.

"Kage...tora...?"

Ayako seemed to realize that this was a tiger that had been contracted by Kagetora. The golden tiger opened its mouth and roared, spewing out a white smoke from its mouth. The smoke slowly morphed into a form, taking on the material shape of a person. An appearance similar to the image from a projector, it was Takaya's form.
This was a message that Takaya had requested the tiger to convey.

"Kagetora...!"

Proceed to Miya-jima. Takaya said.

"Huh...?"

--The Mouri are regrouping at Itsukushima to launch an attack. The 'Yamato' will be participating in the battle.

Takaya stated this clearly. He continued to speak.

--If you have acquired the 'manju' then contact Amako. Conduct a meeting with Shikanosuke, and prompt him to hand over the 'kanju' to the Uesugi, persuade him to leave the Oda. Make use of the 'manju' and 'kanju' to sink the 'Yamato' and eliminate the Oda.

"!"

Ayako was extremely stunned.

"This is too unreasonable! Carrying out two assignments at one time, how do I...!"

--I will leave this to you.

Takaya vanished after he had finished speaking. It was a one-way message, Ayako had no way of retorting at the orders.

At that moment.

"! ...Kakizaki-dono!"

Tomo-hime suddenly yelled in a shrill voice.

"Underground... what is that from deep underground! There's something approaching! Something massive is heading this way at an extremely high speed!"

"What!"

Ayako knelt and used her hand to touch the surface of the ground. She drew a deep breath. A colossal feeling approached from the west. It was drawing closer.

This is... a fire dragon!

Ayako raised her head and yelled at the divine tiger.

"What is this! What are you planning to do! Kagetora!"

"I won't let you escape, Uesugi!"

A voice from behind stunned both of them. Shimozura Rairen stood at the entrance of the cave. His entire body was soaking wet, from his appearance he must have dived into the water as well to pursue Ayako and Tomo-hime. His lungs' vital capacity must be truly amazing.

"Rairen..."

"Hand over the 'manju'! Both of you have no where to run!"

Ayako was speechless, she once again issued her powers, spurring on her utterly exhausted body.

"It's useless, Kakizaki!"

Rairen mercilessly attacked with spell bombs.

"!"

The tiger moved into action. It spitted a chunk of gas from its mouth, which directly clashed with Rairen's incantation. This triggered a huge explosion between the two of them.

"Argh!!!"

Within the winds of the explosion, the tiger confronted Rairen, who had been struck down, advancing towards him. It was too late for evasion. The tiger bared its sharp fangs and clamped down on Rairen's throat!

"Waaa!!!"

The blood spouted out. Rairen's throat had been slashed open, he slumped to the ground. The tiger floated then jumped back into the ground, as if saying 'message conveyed' looking back only once before submerging into the earth.

The pressure of a violent feeling surrounded the area after the tiger left. An immense cadence and cry rose from the ground. In the depths of the ground over which she stood, large numbers of fire dragons brought lava, accompanied by thunderous noises that tore across the plains.

From the north-eastern direction. That was Hagi.

Tomo-hime could feel the tremors as well, not moving from her position as she stood there looking dumbfounded. Ayako's expression had turned stiff. What had Takaya decided to do? Compared with previous battles, the scale of this one differed by so much.

What sort of premonition was Ayako having?

"Don't die, both of you..."

Muttering in this way, Ayako eventually could not restrain herself any longer and shouted out loudly.

"You must not die! Both of you!"

Lyrics to the Anime Theme Songs (TV version)

BLAZE 2002 by Kathy Shower

Sitting at the door of darkness
Talking to myself as though we'll never die
Searching for a trace in silence
Hunting out the time to let my soul fly
To break the chain of love and hate and set us free again
Ride the wind to get to the land of joy
Where there’s no fear no pain
You can fly, like a bird
Seize the day and get to the land of joy
Take me there, brand new dawn
Into the mirage of the blaze
Into the mirage of the blaze
Take me there.

VISION OF FLAMES by Mai Yamane

Can’t hold this feeling no more
Just can’t pretend to care for
Half-hearted trips, out to grab and hit the score
I’ve come to see the light
We’re destined to ignite
Long as we live, everyone has got the right
Wake up your inner child
Wake up your tender branches
We’ve been
We’ll always be
Here to stay and breathe forevermore
Blazing away to free
The right of power that live inside
Believe in vision of flames and dream
The sweetest dream - testify
Blazing away to free
The heat of passion that burns inside
Believe in vision of flames and see
What lies beneath them all - beneath them all.

TEARS OF INDIGO by Mai Yamane and Suzi Kim

You always wondered
Just how much longer you have to go
Lying under
The clouds of fear that refuse to flow
Tears of indigo
You don’t have to cry no more
Hey, it’s time for us to go home
A mother’s standing here
Before your very eyes
Time you found her - it’s time you found her
A shelter from the cold
A mother’s standing here
Time you found her - it’s time you found her.

Draft: Version 1 - final
Notes: okyaku-san (Customer); bakatora (stupid tiger); dametora (useless tiger); だめ虎 dametora (Jeux's note: dametora normally refers to the period of inactivity of the Osaka-Kobe 阪神 baseball team, the Osaka-Kobe Tigers, and Naoe is referring to the fact that the team played well that year/season)
PS: do not distribute this without my permission

[Sound of a bicycle bell]
Takaya: Having to use Miya's red mommy model bicycle to go to school everyday, everyone's probably laughing to tears, I've had enough of this humiliation, damn it.

[While riding up a hill]
Takaya: Hmm... hey! U-Uphill! Take me uphill! Hey! ... God... the bike breaking down on me like that, this really sucks! Looks like I shouldn't have accepted nee-san's (Ayako) scary challenge.

[Flashback... the sound of the engine, all of a sudden a dog leaps out]
Takaya: Mmmh! Waa... [thrown down] The bike! My beloved bike!!

Ayako: Really, what a softie! You little rascal!

Takaya: What did you say? Damn you!!

[Ayako hops onto bike and rides away]
Takaya: I'm rarely this unlucky with my bike, damn it! That old hag of a woman!!

[Dog barks]
Takaya: Ah, are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?

Dog: Wow wow wow!

Takaya: Really? That's great, [smiles bitterly] but why did you suddenly leap out, seriously!

[End of flashback]
Takaya: What should I do now, I still need to pay off a large portion of my loan... Well, there's no other way, looks like I'll have to start looking for a part time job.

[Gas station]

Takaya: The gas tank has been filled, that would be 3520 yen altogether [accepts money] Thank you very much...

[Another car drives in]

Takaya: Come come come, welcome, this way please!

Chiaki: Fill up the tank, and don't slack on the job.

Takaya: Huh? That voice?? A serious face together with that flowery shirt although it's obviously not summer...

Chiaki: Hey? Kagetora, is that you?

Takaya: Sure enough it's Chiaki!

Chiaki: Wearing a uniform as well as a cap, for a moment I couldn't recognize you. Say, what are you doing here?

Takaya: Ah, let me tell you, Chiaki. Actually, so... that's about all of it!

Chiaki: I see, that's really unfortunate.

Takaya: Are you sympathizing with my misfortune? Chiaki, you're really a good person... [is touched]

Chiaki: No way! [music] Stop being so naive, people aren't as simple as you think. [smiles fiercely]

Takaya: What are you up to? With that unusually happy expression of yours?

Chiaki: [excited] Do you still need to mention it?? Normally I can only surrender to the master like a relationship with an elder uncle, but today I can finally vent my frustration now that our roles are reversed!

Takaya: So what? Moreover, where in your manner does it resemble a master in this relationship? I can't detect the slightest hint of it.

Chiaki: You're still as slow-witted as before. Pushing your luck with your stupidity, don't you know how exhausted I usually am! I'll let you experience this pain starting from the very beginning!!

Takaya: [stunned] Y-You brat...

Chiaki: [in a highly imposing manner] Alright, alright, stop with your babbling and get to work quickly!

Takaya: Bastard! Acting so conceited all of sudden...

Chiaki: Oh... you really have the nerve to treat your customer like that considering that you're the attendant, don't you? If anything happens do you think you'd be able to fix it? Is that it? Do you want to be fired so badly?

Takaya: [stunned] Ah, no... I understand, I understand! I just have to refill your gas tank right?

Chiaki: What, you seem unwilling.

Takaya: Yes yes, I understand, I will fill the tank for you, Okyaku-sama.

Chiaki: [delighted] Hahaha, good for you for understanding. I am the customer, you are the attendant, remember this relationship well!

Takaya: Yes yes yes yes. [discontent] Really, I never knew he was such a person to be so calculative over trivial matters.

Chiaki: Huh? What did you say?

Takaya: Nothing! Okyaku-sama is God!

Chiaki: That's right that's right. Having to train this bakatora is really tiring.

Takaya: [softly] Damn it!

Takaya: The tank is full, that would be 4150 yen altogether, thank you very much.

Chiaki: I'm not done yet.

Takaya: Ah?

Chiaki: Next, it would be best to change the tires.

Takaya: Is that really necessary? Aren't all of them still new?

Chiaki: Boy, would just a small attendant such as yourself dare to go against his customer's wishes?

Takaya: [stunned] Not at all, I'll immediately change them as according to your instructions!

Chiaki: That's it that's it, I'm in such a good mood...

Takaya: Damn it, assigning me with this extremely tedious work... This brat, it can't be that he deliberately came to trouble me?

Chiaki: It's rare to see you using your intuition.

Takaya: [stunned] !

Chiaki: What are you dawdling about over there? Sure enough you're still a brat who can never grasp the main point of your task.

Takaya: [suppressing his anger] My apologies, I'm working on it...

Chiaki: So... slow, even the sun is about to set.

Takaya: It hasn't even been five minutes!

Chiaki: Letting people wait until the flowers have withered away, you really should serve some coffee!

Takaya: Just shut up and quit gabbing on about how it's not done yet!

Chiaki: [In a high loud voice] Wh...at...?? Who are you telling to shut up?

Takaya: Ah, no, no. I was just casually talking. Do you want coffee? I'll go fetch a cup for you now.

[After a moment]

Takaya: Sorry to keep you waiting.

Chiaki: [drinks] Bleh...! [fiercely spits out] What kind of coffee is this?? xxxx The way it's brewed is disgusting!!

Takaya: How can that be, isn't it okyaku-san's imagination that it's disgusting?

Chiaki: T-This bastard, he's trying me.

Takaya: What did you just say?

Chiaki: No, nothing.

Takaya: Oh, that's good... Right, all the tires have been changed.

Chiaki: [steadies his face] That's still not the end.

Takaya: [clenching his teeth]... Okyaku-san, haven't you had enough of employing this person's assistance...

Chiaki: Do you even need to mention that! How can I return like this!

Takaya: [saying to himself in a soft voice] Calm down. [saying out loud] Then what other services does okyaku-san still require?

Chiaki: Then... change the fuel oil.

Takaya: Alright, change the fuel oil, is that it?

[Takaya hummed a song as he worked]

Chiaki: A smirk on his face... Let me say this first, don't you even think of replacing the oil with water.

Takaya: [softly] Have I been found out?

Chiaki: [suddenly] WAAAAAAA!!!

Takaya: W-What's the matter?

Chiaki: You bastard, going so far as to dare leave fingerprints on my beloved Leopard!

Takaya: Where? Isn't it shiny like new, with not a speck of dirt?

Chiaki: Damn it, are you blind? Use this pair of glasses to look carefully!

Takaya: How come you have these glasses?

Chiaki: They are for outdoor usage. Now look carefully!! Isn't this the solid proof of a fingerprint!

Takaya: Ah, this? But what evidence do you have to say that those are my fingerprints!

Chiaki: Bring your fingers over here [pulls Takaya's fingers] Take a good look at your fingers! The outlines of each and every one of those curved marks, who else but you have these sort of fingers?!

Takaya: Ah, ...really... [responding] This sort of thing doesn't deserve so much fuss!! This is such a small matter, now look at me!

[lifts hands and presses them onto car]

Chiaki: Ahhh, how could you leave marks on my second favorite car!! Don't you think you can easily get away with this!!

Takaya: What did you say?!

Naoe: Nagahide, that's quite enough!

Chiaki & Takaya: Naoe?!!

Naoe: I've heard everything from the start and you've only made things difficult for Takaya-san.

Takaya: From the start... you were already here?!

Chiaki: Hmph! I was only teaching this brat about the cruelty of this world.

Naoe: 'This brat', what do you mean by 'this brat'?! Don't worry. Takaya-san, you may use my gold card to pay off the loan for your motorbike.

Takaya: Huh?

Chiaki: Stop with this mighty talk, aren't you still using your family's credit card, you young Buddhist master!

Naoe: Watch your language! Nagahide!! How can you let the respectable status of Kagetora-sama condescend to the level of having to do such work involving this dirty greasy oil. I won't be able to explain this to Kenshin-kou. Ah, please accept my gold card.

Takaya: R-Really... Haha, but can I really use it? I won't refuse then...

Naoe: Of course there is no problem. Please do not refuse, make full use of my gold card...

Chiaki: It's because you're wallowing in idleness, accustomed to a pampered life, that's why you let this brat grow increasingly overindulgent, he'll eventually end up as a felon.

Takaya: Are you saying I'm becoming overindulgent?!

Naoe: 'This brat', what do you mean by 'this brat'?! It's okay Takaya-san, please be fully indulgent.

Takaya: N-Naoe.....???

Naoe: Please fully indulge yourself, please be fully roguish... then fall into my embrace...

Chiaki: Hmph, you finally show your true colors, Naoe.

Naoe: Now Takaya-san, come into my embrace, come, come, come!!

Takaya: [scared] W-Wait... you've got to be kidding me!! I will settle the loan with my own means, I don't need anyone to meddle in my problems!!

Naoe: T-Takaya-san...

Chiaki: Hahaha, too bad, Naoe! Looks like this kid doesn't share your sentiments.

Naoe: 'This kid', what do you mean by 'this kid'?!

Chiaki: So you think 'this kid' doesn't sound nice, then 'bakatora' will do!

Naoe: What do you mean by 'bakatora'! How dare you go so far as to address Kagetora-sama so cheaply.

Chiaki: If 'bakatora' won't do then 'dametora' should be fine!

Naoe: It seems like this meaning is slightly different... in addition, this year... dametora, ...a little different somewhat...

Chiaki: Huh? Then 'octopus' should be fine!

Naoe: [resentful] 'Octopus', what do you mean by 'octopus'!! Speaking of which, an octopus is a soft-bodied creature...

Takaya: SHUT UP!!!

Naoe: [stunned] Takaya-san...

Chiaki: What's the matter, octopus?

Takaya: I want you all to stop labeling me with names! Don't take me for a mute just because I'm silent, simply calling me a bakatora, an octopus, a piece of junk.

Naoe: We didn't say 'junk'...

Takaya: Look here!

[Takaya kicks Chiaki's car ferociously]

Chiaki: Ah, you bastard, how dare you damage my Leopard!

Naoe: What do you mean by 'bastard'!

Takaya: Watch as I leave these glowing fingerprints on your car as a token!

[Takaya presses his hands onto Chiaki's car]

Chiaki: Ah... don't use those sticky hands of yours to touch my car!! You stinking tiger!

Naoe: What do you mean by 'stinking tiger'!! Nagahide, your choice of words is too vulgar!!

Chiaki: [wails] My Leopard, my Leopard!!

Takaya: [delighted] Heeheehee!! Serves you right!!

Chiaki: [exploding] You bastard, I won't let you get away with this!

Takaya: So what...

[Chiaki & Takaya bicker with each other]

Naoe: Poor Takaya-san... working is considerably exhausting. Honestly. I can't just let it go and not care. Please don't worry, I will appear like a shadow and pledge myself to fight to the death to protect you left and right.

Book 20 Chapter 08 星は眠る

From Chinese translations by 佚.

Draft: Version 1 - final
Notes: final chapter of Volume 20
PS: do not distribute this without my permission

A pure darkness existed within the depths of the forest.
A darkness so profound that it was impossible to see the boundary.

Not a hint of a sound could be heard, a room hidden in the deep mountains.

The window opened slightly.
Once the wind blew, the silk flowery lace of the curtains danced gracefully in the breeze, like the wings of a white bird.

On the white bed were two people.
The naked body of Takaya was fast asleep.
His body was exhausted from climaxing, lying face down, sleeping like he wanted to submerge into the bed. Lying horizontally, not moving at all as though he was dead. He was fast asleep.
Beside him, Naoe watched his slightly concealed shoulders attentively.
In this space, they could break away from the flow of time...
How gratifying it would be if they could really break away, and continue in this way.
Tears began to flow from Naoe's eyes once again as he gently caressed Takaya's pitch black hair.

Can they really continue like this?

To escape from humanity's time and life...
Becoming nameless objects,
Just making love all day long... sleeping, and then restarting the cycle, could they really carry on in this way?

Just the two of us...

If others knew of this, they would definitely sneer at his wild fancies.
Laugh at this weak person's hopes, his frivolous paradise.
He was still dependent on the convenience provided by the shrinking corners of this room.

Their love could not be described.

Naoe kept touching Takaya's hair as he listened to Takaya's steady breathing.
Every breath filled one with tender affection.
No matter how many times they had merged, his feelings of desire never disappeared.

He's a narcotic.

The highest level of narcotics. The more he was taken, the shorter the period of analgesia. It seems like he would be the first to collapse. The last drop had been drained, the person complaining tearfully that he 'cannot come' was really Naoe.

I only need my monster...

He [Takaya] was now in a deep, peaceful sleep, reveling in this moment during which his heart harbored untroubled emotions.
This was probably the only measure of happiness he could provide him.
Why not take advantage of the peace and satisfaction at this moment,
and let him be free despite himself.

Naoe grew distressed.
He could not imagine losing this person.
The day when he would lose this soul was fast approaching, but he did not wish to think about it.
He did not want to lose him.
However, in order to not lose him,
he had to kill him now...

--Kagetora's soul is about to reach its end.

That day, Kenshin had informed Naoe.

--That person does not have much longer to live.

An abnormality had arisen in Kagetora's soul.
Going through the 400 years of this endless life, his soul was now stricken with a serious illness.
Kenshin had used the stars as an analogy to describe the status of Kagetora's soul.
He was now an old fixed star that welcomed death.
However he was no ordinary star. He was an exceptionally large star. Once nearing its demise, stars of this sort would lose their stability, expand quickly to a distressing extent, and finally perish in a huge explosion. In other words,

The nucleus of the soul will fracture, and then disappear.

--If this matter is neglected, sooner or later Kagetora's soul will revolt, then self-explode.

Kenshin had been paying close attention to Kagetora's abnormality.

Kagetora's soul possessed a power greater than the ordinary human. A high energy star, will gradually increase in size and eventually be destroyed in a huge blast.
That is, the outbreak of a supernova. A soul functioned in a similar manner.
Kagetora's spirit had already attained an unusual blaze.
The more he fought, the more of these flames would be ignited, ever expanding towards the consequence of erupting.

Once the nucleus of his soul has shattered, his life would end. He would no longer be able to reincarnate.

It was the equivalent of the annihilation of a soul.

--But it is still not too late to save him.

To avoid the death of his soul, there was only one way.
Immediately destroy his body now and exorcise him. To strongly purify him via 'exorcism'.
As long as the soul could be cooled, it would not explode. Nevertheless, he had to remove the burden from his soul, to put an end to this person's life, to forestall the unnatural burning.
Although he did not know when his soul would die, as long as he carried out this task, he [Takaya] would be able to reincarnate. His soul could continue to exist in subsequent lifetimes.

--Now, just being alive was dangerous.

Because just being alive was dangerous, if he allowed him to fight further battles, it would only hasten the moment of his destruction.
Kenshin had considered the 'transformation of the soul into a giant star.'
In order to stop this from happening, he had a need for someone to carry out this exorcism.

Who is there...

It continuously ate away at Naoe's heart, as he looked at Takaya fast asleep beside him.

Now, immediately...

Kenshin had explained that if he did not end his life right away, Kagetora's future can only follow either one of two paths.
In other words, one is an explosion - the fragmentation of the nucleus of his soul.
Even if he could remove the burden of his soul completely, prevent his spirit from blowing up,
if he continued to live in this way,
sooner or later he would shrink into a small star, a white dwarf, and ultimately become a dead star.
Then this soul,
would no longer be like the rest of the stars that glinted with radiance.

The soul's demise...

In principle, a person's soul did not come to an end and retire after 400 years. The evidence being that 400-year-old onryou could be found everywhere. However Kagetora was not merely existing. Regardless of whether he was undergoing possession or performing an exorcism, all of these were an enormous burden that weighed on his soul. Perhaps, just the issues of 'life' was a far greater burden than anything else. He had endured bitterness and harshness for 400 years.

Additionally, there was the wear and tear owing to the ramifications of his amnesia from having sealed his own memories.

It was not surprising that he had ended up like this...

--This matter, I shall leave it to you.

Kenshin had finally said to Naoe.

--My child's, Kagetora's, matter.

Naoe Nobutsuna. --I beg you.
I have to leave.
I will no longer be able to converse with all of you.

--Even if he lost his dignity.

Given that he was no longer Uesugi Kenshin. The heir to the patron god of the North - Kagetora...

--I am certain you will be able to defend my judgment.

Kenshin's determination had been extremely firm, nobody could change his wishes.
Leaving Naoe with these words.
Kenshin had ascended to a path of no return.
To stop 'Yami Sengoku'.
In order to become a true God of War, he had to leave.

Time could not be reversed.
Naoe cried silently.

I don't want to lose...

He did not want to lose this person. This was his only intent at present.
He was going to lose him.
His soul would soon be forfeited.
The sign had already appeared. Takaya was now unable to control his 'powers'. It was not merely due to fatigue, which he [Naoe] had tried to convince himself with during the rebellion, but because this giant star of a soul had lost all control of its strength.

His soul could no longer preserve its stability.
Before it was too late.
Exorcism, in order to rescue his soul from death...
For the sake of saving and leaving...

Naoe caressed Takaya's hair quietly.
His fingers crawled from his neck to his throat. Leaving behind marks like they were engraved into his neck.
Naoe wanted to bite at his jaw.

This matter...

He held Takaya strongly.

"I don't want to lose you..."

Clearly, everything was just beginning now.
They could obviously continue in this way.

But there was no stopping the flow of time even if they were completely imprisoned.

Only the wind caused the curtains to dance about.

Embraced closely within this man's bosom, this soul, burning out due to a critical sickness, still slept soundly in ignorance.

I can't lose...

Naoe suppressed his whimpers.
He could give up anything, but he absolutely could not lose this one person.
He hugged the sorrowful star tightly.
The star was still in a deep sleep.

Takaya-san...

*

The two of them in this private room,
how many days had actually passed, how many nights?
In this quiet room of recovery, the songs of the birds from outside could be heard.
A room with no clock. He only knew that it was the moment of daybreak.
Curled on the sheets, a recumbent Takaya opened his eyes.

"..."

Beside him was Naoe fast asleep.
Nestled on this white bed, how many times had their skins touched each other?
Besides sleep, besides meals, it seemed like nearly the rest of the entire time they only craved for each other's bodies. How long had they gone on in this manner? There was no way of estimating.

From that time onwards, Takaya had covered his left eye again. Even though Naoe had said that he did not need to, Takaya was resolute. He did not want to increase Naoe's burden any more than necessary.
He listened to his regular breathing. Once he raised his eyes, Naoe's sleeping face was promptly revealed before him.

Naoe's... sleeping face.

This was the first time he saw it so clearly.

He only realized now that he thought about it, Takaya had never seen Naoe asleep before. Especially in this body. Although they had lodged together a few times, whenever Takaya went to bed, Naoe was always still calmly awake, watching over Takaya as he slept. He constantly got up earlier than Takaya too, Takaya had never seen him going to sleep. Since this had become the usual way of things, he never paid any attention to it until now.
Even if Takaya suddenly awoke during the night, perhaps he could sense it, but Naoe would always immediately awaken.

Thus he had never seen Naoe's sleeping appearance before.

But now...

Even though Takaya had gotten up, he still did show any signs of waking.
Takaya understood that it was not because his spirit was slacking. He did not awaken because his physical strength was decreasing. Exactly how large a burden did his body carry?

My internal poison...

Naoe's body was being eroded away as a result of direct contact with Kihachi's poison, he was slowly weakening.
Kihachi's onnen was not solely concentrated in his left eye. It followed in his breath, from his nasal cavity to his skin, in trace amounts, leaking out continuously. Just being in the same room was enough to be affected by this toxin, let alone sleep together so closely, it would be odd if the body did not come to be ruined.

They really should not be having sexual intercourse.
With one look he could see that Naoe's life was diminishing.

You're really an idiot...

Resurrection was not easy, it was a miracle hard to come by. If this happens then wouldn't it all have been for naught?
Wouldn't everything be wasted?

If this continues, you will die.

Soon you will be weakened to the extent that you can no longer rise.

But Naoe obviously knew and yet still desired Takaya.
Takaya bit his lip as he gazed at Naoe.

I understand now.

This man was earnest. He had sincerely made up his mind to stay in this place together with him for the rest their lives. He had abandoned the Uesugi and 'Yami Sengoku'. He did not go anywhere else but only remained in this small space.

Together with me...

Takaya's eyes were full of misery.
He understood his kind intentions completely. What sort of awareness had he embraced.
How had he [Naoe] come to love him [Takaya] in this way?
He already.... knew. Therefore,

Naoe...

He called his name through clenched teeth, gently stroking his hair.
Such soft hair. His fingers caressed his cheeks. Those beloved cheeks.
He closed his mouth and gently felt his [Naoe] lips in a kiss.
Takaya closed his eyes, then in a determined manner opened them again.
He alone got out of bed.

The forest was resounding with the chirps of the birds.
The grass was moistened by the morning dew, the white birch forest partly visible in the mist.

Naoe still did not wake.
Takaya changed his clothes in the adjacent room so as to not startle Naoe awake.
From the wardrobe, he took out the uniform he had worn in Aso, removing it from the clothes rack, stretching his hand through the linen in search of something. Found it. The object hidden within the folds of the clothes. He had obtained it from Chiaki because he had mentioned that it may be of some use.

Small, white tablets.

--It can be taken just like that, or dissolved in anything. Only one lozenge is required.

Remembering Chiaki's words, Takaya held the tablets in his palm.
He headed towards the kitchen.

He saw the wine cabinet. Stored in the cabinet were a few bottles of Western wine. His eyes stopped at one bottle that was already half-empty.
Takaya took that bottle out.

Hearing sounds, Naoe finally awoke in the bedroom. Upon discovering that Takaya was not by his side, he jumped out of bed.

Takaya-san...

Carelessly knocking over the sleeping gown draped over the back of the chair, he opened the door to the kitchen.

Takaya was in the kitchen.

Naoe heaved a sigh of relief. There was a bottle of red wine on the table, the cork had already been removed. Takaya had probably opened it.

Takaya, noticing Naoe, turned his head towards him.

"Takaya-san..."

Naoe sighing with relief, asked.

"Do you want to drink?"

"..."

Takaya nodded his head slightly and answered.

"I want to drink a toast with you."

Naoe keenly watched Takaya, who was wearing a shirt and a pair of jeans, for a short instance.
Then he lowered his gaze and smiled, moving towards the cup cabinet.

"Let me get the glasses. Do you want to drink here?"

"Bring them to the porch."

Takaya said.

"I want to drink outside."

"..."

Alright. Naoe answered.

While Naoe prepared the items, Takaya went to the porch and gazed at the white birch forest.

The outdoors were somewhat cold. But the air was very refreshing, with just one inhalation he felt like his internal self had been cleansed. Be it feelings of darkness or the difficult memories, everything had been sanitized.
If he always breathed this air, could the poison in his heart and mind perhaps disappear one day?

The sound of the birds sprung up again. As if receiving his now sober frame of mind, the many birds sang together in a chorus.
In ancient times, the twitter of birds could often be heard all around, since when had he stopped encountering this sort of mornings?

As though it was purifying his very soul.
The wind at dawn had purged his heart. He could not be anymore clear-headed.
If everyone in this world could experience this moment of blessedness,

They would definitely become tender-hearted.

Takaya closed his eyes in sadness.

No...

Perhaps the minutes of daybreak were so prominently serene precisely because the majority of people did not know of this moment.

Naoe came to the porch holding the wine-filled glasses, giving one of them to Takaya.
The wine reflected the light, its color similar to Takaya's eyes.

Naoe looked at Takaya, asking,

"Aren't you still too young..."

"..."

"But there is no such thing as time in this place, so it doesn't matter."

Takaya smiled.

"What shall we make a toast to?"

"..."

"To our reconciliation?"

Takaya hung his eyes. Displaying a forlorn expression.

"To... our 400 years."

Naoe looked at Takaya sincerely.

Takaya raised his face, lifting his glass. Naoe held his glass alongside.
When the surfaces of the glasses touched, a pure sound rang out.

--Cheers.

With his eyes transfixed on Takaya, Naoe brought the glass to his lips. Takaya gazed at him.

Just when his lips were about to touch the glass, suddenly,

Takaya abruptly dropped his own glass, skillfully pulled Naoe over, snatched the glass out of Naoe's hand and drank the wine, containing the liquid in his mouth. Then in a moment's impulse, forcefully pressed his own lips repeatedly onto Naoe's mouth.

Because Takaya had acted in such rashness, Naoe only stared widely in astonishment. The wine had spilled out of the dropped glass. With their lips enfolded, the fluid migrated from Takaya's mouth, Naoe did not have a second's thought and wanted to drink it even more.

Takaya did not immediately pull away. Having never had the strength until now, he was positively hungry for Naoe's lips.
As if he wanted to empty all of his yearning into Naoe's body.
Naoe widened his eyes still. Takaya looked at Naoe closely, separated by a distance such that their breaths caressed each other.

With a desirous look in his eyes he used his utmost strength to stare at him, as if he wanted to disfigure his body.

Firmly enduring his pain, Takaya uttered to Naoe.

"Goodbye... Naoe."

"..."

"Goodbye..."

"...Takaya-san..."

Naoe's breathing stopped. He saw tears welling up in Takaya's eyes.

A smile appeared on his [Takaya] face.

"I understand now..."

"Takaya-san..."

"My greatest happiness... comes from having met you..."

"Takaya-san...!"

A wave of dizziness struck his head. As a result of the sudden stupor, he was also losing his balance, about to fall at any minute.
Takaya left Naoe's side, retreating back step by step.
His body grew numb. Naoe pressed against his forehead, desperately trying to support his body.

"What did you... let me drink?"

The wine had been drugged.

"Takaya-san..."

Takaya did not answer, he was silently watching Naoe.
Tears were falling.

"I love you..."

In order to stop him, Naoe proceeded with a step to grab Takaya, but on the second, third step his body could no longer stand by itself, he fell to the ground on-the-spot. His body did not obey his orders. His vision gradually blurred.
Takaya bit his lip, slowly backing away off the porch.

"Ta...kaya...san..."

Squeezing out his entire strength, Naoe cried.

"You can't leave! Stay here! Don't go anywhere else!"

Takaya shook his head. He bit his lower lip hard and desperately shook his head.

"Don't go... Takaya-san!"

Naoe used his final strength and stiffly stood up. Dragging his steps as he tried to move in Takaya's direction to catch him. But the drug's crippling effect on his body was decidedly too strong. He immediately fell again. Numbness dominated his body, unable to move. He wanted to pursue him even if he had to crawl, but his sight darkened.

"Ta...kaya...san..."

Takaya struggled to endure the pain and tenderness that filled his bosom as he gazed at Naoe.

--It doesn't matter if I die like this.

--But I definitely won't let you die alone.

If he wanted to die, then they should die together. When the end could be seen, he might as well go to his death. After that, there would not be a second more to live. We have agreed to this. To live in a world without Kagetora was to lead a meaningless life. He had promised himself this. He, who represented the proof, had promised himself this.

--Whatever the moment, I still hope for you to live.

He bit his lip until it bled. Hopelessly trying to steady himself who was fast about to be defeated.

He [Takaya] would not forget. Engraved deep within his soul. Your promise, your weight, every one of them, everything.
"I will not forget you..."

Naoe had grown still.

Takaya closed his eyes tightly, squeezing out the tears, then stolidly turned to leave.
He left, his head did not look back.

"Ta...kaya-san...!"

His vision darkened.
Even though he had stretched his arms, even though he desperately called out.
His body could not move.
Takaya's form vanished into the thick fog.
The beloved form of his back had disappeared.

Don't leave...!

Naoe called from within the depths of his soul.

"Takaya-san!"

He never once looked back.
The form melted into the cream-colored spiritual fog.
As if from the very beginning, this person was an illusion born from the spiritual mist.
Like an illusion.
Ougi Takaya disappeared.
