Proceeding from Okutsunomiya, they could easily see the vast rocky landscape after passing the steep stone steps. This bulging plateau, shaped as such by years of water erosion, was called Chigo fuchi.

"It's freezing--!"

Because of the bone-chilling cold wind, Ayako pulled the collar closer around her neck. The sun was beginning to set, the waves received the tangerine rays and emitted a radiance, becoming a road of light.
The great waves surged up violently. The tides crashed against the rock cliff, occasionally sending up a spray of water. The road leading to the cave was well constructed. Supported from the top of the cliff was the bridge, it was fairly scenic. Takaya and Ayako listened to the sound of the spattering suds as they made their way to the entrance.

"I've been here before, a long time ago. Still, a lot has changed around here. Previously, there was only the cave."

The legendary cave was the birthplace of Enoshima's beliefs. The main shrine of Enoshima was formerly inside this very cave, known as the 'Kazu Cavern'.

Ayako's home was now in Yokohama, within these 20 years she had visited this area several times. But ever since the cave was sealed due to the incident of falling rocks in the 46th year of the Showa period, this was actually her first time entering the cave as 'Kadowaki Ayako'.

A signboard that said 'Danger of Falling Rocks, Entry is Prohibited' was posted at the entrance of the cave.
Breaking the locks of the gate with incantations, the two of them went in. There was no sign of anyone. The investigation into the incident of falling rocks appeared to have ended.
As none of the electric lights were on, the inside was a mass of black. They borrowed a flashlight placed on the service counter outside.

"Let's go in."

They stepped onto the bare rock of the cave, walking towards the inner section. The place was more like an open space rather than a cave, panels of images and geoscience explanations were hung everywhere.

"I thought it'd be a limestone cavern, but this is far from what I expected."

It felt like an untraversed region. The cave was divided into the first and second caverns. The first cavern was 152 meters in length, while the second was about 40 meters in length. Legend has it that Koubou Daishi and the Nichiren holy priest once participated in the monastic practice of seclusion in this place.

Moving on through the empty space, a bifurcation appeared before them. The left path led to the first cavern.

"Which cavern has the fuuketsu?"

"Hmm... no idea, according to the directions it should be the first cavern. Ah, but this is a man-made wind, so it'll be quite difficult to say which one's the real..."

"Shh!" Takaya suddenly held up his forefinger. Ayako, startled, quieted down immediately. Takaya lowered his voice. "Someone's there."

"Someone's there?"

"...Seems like it. But it's a little strange."

Ayako focused her attention on the surroundings as well.

"Inside."

"The falling rocks occurred in the first cavern. They shouldn't be able to enter."

"...Yeah, but someone's there." Takaya said, holding his own breath and keeping his guard up. Ayako followed suit, she calmly held her breath and headed inside, the sound of their footsteps was inaudible.

"!"

The light from their torch encountered someone lying on the passage before them. Shocked, they ran towards him and held him up.

"Hey, what's wrong! Are you okay!"

Despite shaking his body there was no response. Ayako seemed to have discovered other bodies scattered on the ground further up ahead.

"Kagetora! Over here as well!"

They were workers wearing safety helmets. Takaya wondered if there was another incident of falling rocks, he examined the entire area with his torch.

"Weird. There are no signs of an occurrence of falling rocks..."

"Kagetora... I hear something."

With Ayako's mention, Takaya inclined his head and listened attentively.
It was a man's voice. He sang with a deep and low voice... no, it was not a song. It sounded like he was chanting a scripture.

This is...

Takaya could identify it by ear.
It was the Fudoumyouou shingon.
The flickering flame of a candle could be seen. Someone was inside the cavern. Apparently, the other had noticed that there were people around, the shingon stopped abruptly. They heard a sharp voice.

"Who is there...!"

"!"

Takaya and Ayako instinctively raised their guard. The man's figure was now fully visible in the beam of the flashlight. The man had short hair and a stout figure. He had the physical stature of a wrestler, big and tall, with thick lips and sharp vision, the man resembled a bear.

This brat...

That was the reason Takaya and Ayako were on alert; the other was certainly no ordinary person.

He is possessed!

Ayako immediately sensed this as well. In that moment that they came face to face, both parties realized that the other was not an average person. The man stood up once he saw Takaya and Ayako, displaying a guarded appearance.

"Are you guys kanshousha...?"

Hearing the man's downcast voice, Takaya gasped.

"Which clan are you from? Are you subordinates of the Satomi?"

"What...!"

"Have you all come to obstruct me? Satomi."

Onshou...!

Ayako braced herself for action at once. Power poured into Takaya's tiger eyes, he stared fiercely at the other. "...We are not the Satomi. What on earth did you do back there? Are you the one who attacked those people? Who are you? State your identity."

"What! Then are you guys the..."

"If you don't state your name, you will be expelled from that body. Or perhaps we will send you to another world!"

Takaya issued an intense air of aggression from his body in a menacing way. Hearing these spoken words, it seemed as though the man was aware of Takaya and Ayako's identities.

"D-Don't tell me you guys are...!"

"Identify yourself! What clan are you from!"

"Damn it...! How can I let myself be destroyed by you all!"

In an instance, a green spiritual wave of hostility surged out of the man's body. Takaya had wanted to attack with an incantation but the man outpaced him by one step.

"!"

Green lightning shot through the darkness at high speeds. Takaya shielded Ayako reflexively, setting up a Goshinha. Like electricity, an intense noise broke out at the same time, the inside of the cave was suddenly illuminated as brightly as broad daylight.

"Kagetora...!"

The other's incantation exploded out once more, the rocks above them rumbled and began to tumble, plunging down directly on Takaya and Ayako.

"Nnh...!"

At this crucial moment, Takaya released a spell that smashed the rocks to pieces while protecting their heads. The rocks were pulverized into sand that showered down on them. The man seized this opportunity to move past them, fleeing towards the entrance.

"Wait!"

Takaya called out in this way, and was about to release a Nen Nami. However...!

"!"

He exclaimed 'Shoot!' but it was too late. He had lost control of his powers. The strength of his incantation was more powerful than required, it came bursting forth afresh from within Takaya's body.

"Ahhh!"

The man wanted to enact a Goshinha but he did not manage to do so in time. Takaya's mistake in his excessive incantation not only hit the man but demolished the whole bedrock of the cavern. A violent seism rippled through the entire cave.

"Yahhh!"

The booming sound of the crumbling rocks caused Ayako to cover her ears. Takaya protected his body from the pieces of rock flying about haphazardly, he managed with difficulty to open his eyes.

My powers have again...!

Amid the falling rocks he could see the man lying prostrate on the ground, attempting to escape. Although he had sustained severe injuries, he was still alive.

"I won't let you escape!"

Ayako cried out, courageously giving chase despite the falling rocks. The man, covered in blood from head to foot, did not make for the gateway but rather the path that directly lead to the second cavern. He fled in that direction, finally leaping over the fence of the cavern, he escaped.

"Wait, damn it!"

Despite having painstakingly made her way through the falling rocks, Ayako could no longer see any trace of that man by the time she ran out of the cavern. Ayako surveyed the surrounding area after emerging from the cave.

"Where is he...! Ah!"

The man was there. He had passed the cave and was running towards Chigo fuchi. Ayako pursued him.

"Wait!"

Ayako attacked with spells as she ran after him, even though the man was wounded he still nimbly ran past the cave. He was extremely swift. The form of the man disappeared into the shadows of the cave, Ayako grew distressed.

"Ah!"

A small electric boat hastily sailed out from a platform behind the rocks where the man had disappeared. The man was onboard it. The vessel must have been prepared in advance.
The small electric boat that carried the man set out to sea with all speed.

"Ahhh, damn!"

Ayako stomped her foot angrily. At this moment, a golden object flew past her towards the sea. It was a 'Gohou Douji of the Sword' released by Takaya. The gohou douji pursued the small electric boat, disappearing into the western direction.
Then, Takaya walked out.

"Kagetora..., that brat just now..."

"..."

"Kagetora!"

Takaya crouched down in front of the cave, Ayako anxiously ran over to him. Takaya looked extremely pale, furthermore his shoulders were trembling slightly.

"What's the matter? What's wrong! Kagetora!"

Takaya did not say a word, he covered his lips with his hand as he trembled incessantly. His heart was beating violently, the unstable situation of his powers had become severe to the extent that strange symptoms manifested on his body.

"Kagetora, hang in there!"

"I'm... fine... That man just now...."

"What the heck are you two doing there!"

Hearing a voice from the top of the steps, the two of them lifted their heads in shock. Two men appeared on the stairway leading to Okutsunomiya.

"!"

Weren't they the two men from before, Yashiro and Kaizaki!

Why are they here...

"A while ago there was the noise of falling rocks. Was it in this region? Do you know where it came from?" Yashiro walked down the steps of the bridge as he questioned Takaya and Ayako, who were in front of the cave. "It sounded like it came from the cave there?"

"W-We've been here all this while. We were shocked as well... Then... We're not too sure, but it seemed to have come from the inside."

"You didn't enter, did you? The adjacent cavern should have been sealed off. Didn't you see the signboard?"

"N-No. We didn't notice... But we were just looking around. Honest."

Ayako was desperately trying to think of excuses to conceal what had happened. Beside her, Takaya was staring fixedly at Yashiro's face. Apparently, he felt that there was something suspicious about Yashiro's physicality.

"Are you hurt?" Kaizaki, who was standing on the steps, asked in this way.

Kaizaki headed down the steps and approached them, he wore a black overcoat and a scarf that floated in the air as the cold sea breeze blew against it.

"No, we aren't..., it's nothing..."

Even though Ayako answered in this way, Kaizaki still came forward. He made his way towards the cave, coming to their side. Takaya looked at this tall man.

"You..."

Kaizaki looked at them with his slightly raised eyes from behind his glasses. Takaya revolted against this seemingly impolite scrutiny and stared at him fiercely. Kaizaki gazed at his eyes for a while, his expression unexpectedly softened, he knelt down in front of Takaya without paying attention to the fact that his overcoat would be soiled by the gravel.

Takaya felt startled, he widened his eyes.
Kaizaki calmly opened his mouth.

"...You're injured."

"..."

Takaya was on alert once more, he looked at the other menacingly again. Kaizaki, who was wearing gloves, stretched out his fingers towards Takaya's cheek and gently wiped away the blood that was oozing out of his bruise.

"...!"

Takaya was stunned yet he could not brush away his hand. He did not feel pain.
The fingers that touched him were wonderfully warm, Takaya felt as if some distant memories had been brushed against, he held his breath and shut his eyes.
Kaizaki inclined his head slightly, he gazed at Takaya's face in a fatherly manner and asked.

"Did you fall?"

"..."

"Don't neglect this wound that you got from the cave. Even if it does not hurt, it would be best to disinfect it."

As he spoke in this way, Kaizaki slowly took off the black overcoat that he was wearing. Takaya was startled again, not knowing what he intended to do, Takaya could only stare at him. Kaizaki covered Takaya's shoulders with his overcoat.
As he felt himself gently wrapped in the overcoat, a warmth surrounded his entire back. It felt as though he was covered with the other's body temperature. Accompanying the heat, Takaya sensed the fragrance of a perfume that he had smelt from somewhere before, causing him to widen his eyes.

"..."

Takaya remained dumbfounded as a result of his astonishment. Kaizaki smiled once again and murmured to him in a low voice.

"...The sea breeze is chilling. Please take care."

After saying this, Kaizaki swiftly stood up in the next instant. He returned to the steps in front of the cave, Yashiro uttered. "Are you done?"

"Mmm. It seems like the falling rocks occurred inside the cavern. Let's go."

"Understood." Yashiro replied and followed Kaizaki who headed towards the cave. Ayako started to panic.

"Wait, hey you, wait! This overcoat!"

Although Ayako shouted out, Kaizaki did not turn back but disappeared into the cave.

"W-What the... that strange man! Leaving this high grade overcoat here without any reason! Damn, isn't this a Cashmere coat! What does he expect us to do by leaving this here! What does he mean by this!"

"..."

Takaya was still gazing at the cave with a dazed expression. He clutched onto the overcoat that had been draped over his back, not moving an inch.

"Kage... Kagetora...?"

Takaya still sat there, motionless. Ayako looked at his face worriedly. Then, at that moment, Takaya's eyes suddenly grew moist, tears welled up his eyes and began to stream down his cheeks.
Ayako twitched in fright.

"Kagetora!"

Takaya widened his eyes, they became slightly focused. Ayako grew flustered.

"Wait..., what's wrong! Kagetora, Kagetora!"

"Ah---..." Takaya, having recovered himself, turned towards Ayako with his hand over his mouth. Only now did he realize that he was crying.

"Why are you crying? What's wrong?"

"...I...don't know..."

"How can you be crying without any reason!"

"...I really... don't know..."

Takaya was truly confused. He could not understand why he was crying. The reason for his tears was unclear, it violated against Takaya's will, no matter how hard he tried, he could not stop crying.

"Why are you crying? Do you feel cold? Or does your wound hurt? Did that man frighten you?"

"...No..."

"Then what is it..."

Takaya could only shake his head unceasingly. The feeling of that tender heat lingering in the surrounding area behind him caused him to feel an indescribable affection.
It seemed like something had snapped in his heart, it seemed like a certain kind of emptiness had been filled...
Causing one to feel an endless grief...

"Kagetora..."

Not understanding the reason for his weeping, Takaya quivered.
The cold sea breeze blew across the rocky area, the large waves smashed into the rocks once again.

What should I do...

Hiding behind the rocks, Nikaido Reiko had witnessed the string of events with her own eyes. After concluding her investigation at the Gotou mansion, she had come to this place to investigate the cave. Reiko had heard the noise of the falling rocks and hurried to this spot with haste, and as luck would have it she saw Takaya and the others in front of the cave. Reiko immediately grew nervous.

There's no mistake.

Comparing Takaya with the young man in the picture that Sakaki had given her, Reiko clenched her fist.

There's no mistake that he's the young man in question. The important witness for #36.

Reiko's eyesight was sharp, furthermore she had plenty of confidence in her ability to distinguish between the different appearances of other people. As for Kaizaki and Yashiro who entered the cave, she only wondered "Who are they?" and did not hold much interest in them, her line of sight had been fixed on Takaya the entire time.

I never expected to see him in this place.

In that was the case, could it be that the death [of Gotou] due to a curse had an important connection to #36 as she had suspected? If so, she could not lay idle in this place.

I have to contact the director.

Reiko returned the way she came, she quickly headed to a public phone near a local products shop.

***

By the time Ayako and Takaya departed from Enoshima, the sun had completely set in the west.
The car was on the 134 national highway heading towards Kanouyama. The sea was submerged in darkness, from a distance the lighthouse flashed a ray of light at intervals of several seconds.

"That hyoui rei we saw in the cave is definitely one of the onshou." Ayako said while controlling the steering wheel. "It's exactly as we expected. This is related to Yami Sengoku. From tomorrow onwards, we've to dispatch all of our forces to look into this. We should call the 'Ken En', right? Kagetora. ...Kagetora?"

"Huh..."

Takaya only came around after he was called twice. His mind seemed to be constantly preoccupied ever since that incident at the cave. Ayako initially thought he was silent because he felt ashamed that other people had seen him crying hence his irritation, but it appeared that this was not the case. She did not know what Takaya was thinking about, all of Ayako's words merely flew past his ears like a wind, she felt that Takaya was considerably uneasy in his seat, generally speaking.
Kaizaki's overcoat was placed over Takaya's knees.

"I found him totally repulsive, that man."

Takaya shook slightly, he lifted his eyes.

"Would a normal person do that to someone he obviously isn't acquainted with? If he did that to a woman, one may still think that 'this brat is truly a sweet-talker', but he didn't even look at me, and went to you instead... I just think it's kind of weird..."

"...Perhaps."

"Could it be that he knows that you're Uesugi Kagetora hence his actions? It seems like he took notice of us at Hetsunomiya as well. The man we encountered earlier was also saying something about the Satomi. We really can't take this lightly. Moreover, they seem to have comrades that are capable of witchcraft."

Could they be onshou?

Despite thinking in this way, Ayako immediately negated her view. Based on her observations, Kaizaki was not a hyoui rei, neither was he a kanshousha. If he was one of these two, she should immediately be aware of it.

"Just what is he... that man."

"..."

"He's really a suspicious person. With that strange expression in his eyes. Doing something like that, that man is definitely weird, weird! There must be some catch! And that pair of glasses can really make one feel sick!"

Ayako asserted, she was infuriated. At this moment, Takaya began to speak.

"Just now, that man called Yashiro..." Takaya muttered. "That man, has been possessed."

Voicing out 'Huh', Ayako stared ahead. Takaya shifted his gaze from the street lamps in front of the car towards Ayako.

"Didn't you notice? The breath of a hyoui rei."

"I-I was watching Kaizaki's actions all along..."

"He seemed to be a hyoui rei that has strongly concealed his scent."

"Then what's going on exactly? If Yashiro is a hyoui rei, then is he an onshou or what? Is he really? Could Kaizaki also be one?"

"No." Takaya insisted, his complexion faded. "That man---..."

Takaya mumbled, then closed his mouth and said nothing further. He had been uncommunicative in this way all along, Ayako felt worried and peered at his face.

"What's wrong? Are you still bothered about what happened?"

"..."

"Kagetora?"

Takaya did not reply, he softly pulled the overcoat placed on his knee closer to him. He had been holding on to that overcoat since then.

"S-Seriously! You need to get a grip, Kagetora! You shouldn't let something like that bother you! Once in a while, you do come across men who would suddenly do these sort of unexplainable things! You can't take it as something genuine! Not to mention that you're particularly susceptible to older men, all the more reason to be very careful!"

"Who are you saying is susceptible to men?"

"N-No one. I'm just saying."

"..."

Their conversation broke off, Takaya sank into contemplation once more. As expected, he was still troubled about that man. Takaya felt more uncertain than baffled. That man's actions were truly impetuous...

There was nothing that Ayako could do, she spoke again with a deliberate manner of optimism.
"Well whatever, but what should we do about that high-grade Cashmere overcoat? Look at that sheen. It'd cost five, six hundred thousand yen at least. What do we do? Do we just accept it like this?"

"What to do with it... return it to him I suppose?"

"How do we return it?"

"What do you mean how do we return it? Send it back to the company or something."

Ayako ruffled her hair. "Could it be that he wants us to go to his company by leaving his overcoat behind?"

Although Takaya murmured 'I don't know', Ayako's expression immediately grew solemn.
This could conjointly be considered as a form of provocation. If the other was related to the onshou, he would also be well-aware of their identities...

But why...?

There was also the riddle of the man in the cavern.

--Are you guys subordinates of the Satomi...!

Those words caused one to feel agitated. If he was an onshou, then he was definitely one who was hostile towards the Satomi. What clan was he from? Takaya had sent a gohou douji to pursue him, it would not be long before his whereabouts are known.
The falling rocks in the cave, the plans to buy Enoshima shrine, the dreams of the Enma, the emergence of the mermaids... If all of these were related to the onshou, then how exactly are they linked to each other?

"..."

Takaya's demeanor revealed that he was not in the least bit concerned with Ayako who was unsettled, he alone was immersed in his own thoughts. His left hand pressed against his mouth, while his right firmly grasped the overcoat.
Although Ayako was concerned about Takaya, ...there was nothing else she could do. It was as Chiaki had said, she only had to hold herself together and carry out her tasks in a practical manner, nothing more.

Ayako saw a family restaurant beside the road, and willfully exclaimed in a joyous, high-pitched voice.

"Ah---! Finally found the 'Lobster'! I'm starving, let's go in!"

"!"

Ayako abruptly turned the steering wheel in one full turn, entering the vicinity of the shops.
The Shounan sea was surrounded by the darkness of winter, the waves calmly rolled in the sea.

***

On another side of things---.

Chiaki Shuuhei and Fuuma Kotarou had arrived at Yokohama.
The Honmoku Pier at night was shrouded in a mist. Chiaki and the others were at a place known as the Honmoku Pier D Breakwater. On the left was the Wangan Expressway, Yokohama's cross-sea bridge was now flooded with green lights. Then came the pier's orange-red lights.

"The harbor's freezing in winter."

Chiaki stood in front of the breakwater looking out towards the cross-sea bridge, pulling his collar around his neck as he muttered.

"Hey---. It's not here yet? The Takeda's Atake ship that you said!"

"Perhaps it is still early."

Kotarou, wearing a cream-colored short coat, stood behind him on the slope and replied as though nothing had happened. He took out a steamed bun from his bag and gave it to Chiaki.

"I only received information that they would be entering port tonight, the time of their arrival is not known."

"If not even the noble house of the outstanding Fuuma ningun can find that out, then their defense measures must be really tight."

Kotarou did not react to Chiaki's sarcasm at all.

"Speaking of which, the Uesugi's 'Ken En' should be far more outstanding that we are. Considering the degree of information, I presumed you all already had this information in hand."

Chiaki raised his eyebrows. The cold-blooded ninja's sarcasm was uttered in such a dull manner that it caused one regard it as trite, especially when compared with passionate banter.
Kotarou was not in the least bit concerned, he looked towards the lights of the dark dock opposite the bank of water with an expressionless face. The steam pipes of the ships shrilled. Chiaki had nothing else to do but bite at the meat bun.

"...What a lonesome way to have a midnight snack."

Their mission was to stop the forthcoming Takeda Atake ship from docking at the pier.
According to the intelligence gathered by the Fuuma, the Takeda's Atake ship carrying the elemental stone of Koudzushima would be arriving at Yokohama harbor this very night. The elemental stone had been excavated from Koudzushima's Tenjousan and they heard that the Takeda intended to exploit this elemental stone in the manufacture of some sort of curse weapon.

The elemental stone carried on the ship was probably being transported to Kai. Their task was to impede and capture all of them in one sweep. The Atake ship would be entering at Breakwater C on the opposite side. Chiaki had posted the 'Ken En' at every strategic position to await the arrival of the Atake ship at the harbor. It was nearly 10 P.M.. The ship had yet to arrive.

Chiaki squatted as he nibbled on the meat bun, he earnestly observed Kotarou's profile for a short while. Without a doubt, Chiaki did not have complete trust in the Fuuma. What on earth was Kotarou planning to do? It was truly unusual for him to follow the Uesugi just because he was 'regarded as Naoe'.
But Chiaki had no way of deriving any clues by surveying the manner of Kotarou's words and deeds, or his expressions. Chiaki abandoned his intensive scrutiny, he tugged at the long bundle of hair swaying behind Kotarou's back.

"For someone like you who has such a consistent and rigid manner, it's kind of surprising that you'd obediently wear a black suit to play the part of Naoe. But I suppose no fuss was made over this long bundle of hair?"

"I was questioned once about my attire. It was that day. Saburo-dono had asked why I was not wearing black clothes."

That day... was the day Takaya woke up in Hiroshima.

"Thereafter, I have always wore black clothes. However, Saburo-dono did not seem to notice my hair."

"Not bothering about where you fall short? How amazing." Chiaki drank from the aluminium pack of Oolong tea. "This bit about Naoe always wearing black clothes during work, I think he regarded this as funeral attire. Because his work was related to deceased people, you see. This was really like him, should I say that he was accustomed to it or had an inflexible way of thinking? Kagetora also knows why Naoe wore black, so I guess he picked on this point?"

"Is that so?"

"...Do you find it troublesome?"

Chiaki asked, turning towards Kotarou. Kotarou squinted slightly.

"Are you referring to me?"

"Our general is really headstrong. For this reason, you've been restricted and unable to be flexible in your operations, right? Because you haven't been doing what you ought to do as Naoe, that brat Kagetora has become terribly irritable."

"I have already done my best to carry out my duties as an attendant."

"It's not like that..." Chiaki looked at Kotarou, exposing a bitter expression. "In the end, I think you can never be Naoe's replacement."

Hearing Chiaki's words, Kotarou became strangely unhappy. "What do you mean? Are you saying that my 'Art of Simulation' is imperfect?"

"No. Your 'Art of Simulation' is truly astonishing. Be it Naoe's habits, movements or the tone of his voice, you've imitated them perfectly. I'll admit this much. Deserving of the head of the Fuuma. But, no matter how perfectly well you've imitated Naoe, there's still one person in this world that you can never deceive."

"..."

"That person is Kagetora."

Kotarou's face stiffened. As he had much confidence in his imitation techniques, this was a considerable blow to his self-respect.

"Why? Saburo-dono self-hypnotized himself to see me as Naoe, didn't he?"

"But he'll still know. As long as it has to do with Naoe. In the first place, the words that come out of your mouth are different. The way you react is different. ...You don't say the words that Naoe should utter at certain times. You don't behave in the way that Naoe would. That's why Kagetora is in confusion."

"..."

"Kagetora can't understand why Naoe doesn't act in the way that he should. He's extremely confused, has let his imagination run wild, and is therefore losing his nerve." Chiaki faced the cross-sea bridge. "No matter what you do, it'll only deepen the estrangement. It's impossible for you to replace Naoe."

Kotarou's sore spot had been grazed, he wrinkled his brows. "...Do you mean to say that I am incapable of perfectly playing the part of Naoe?"

Chiaki, astounded, recovered himself. Could it be that Kotarou was feeling anxious? The tone of his voice sounded fairly desperate.

"You are saying that I can't manage?"

"Kotarou, you..."

"..."

--An emotionless machine is truly blessed.

Lately, he often recalled these outlandish words. When had he come across these words? It was firmly ingrained in his brain, constantly oppressing Kotarou. Naoe's words were further overlapped with Takaya's voice and compelled him.

--Obviously, a mechanical person like you wouldn't understand! Someone like you would be better off perfecting your devious methods of murdering people!

Kotarou felt a constriction in his chest, his face grew taut.

"I do not understand---..." Kotarou mumbled. "Up until now, I am still unable to understand that man. Everything that Naoe had done at Hakone, in what way should I analyze them? Until now, I still cannot find the solution. Why would he want to enter the mirror? Isn't that simply suicide in the name of love?"

"..."

"I want to know that man's psychological structure. In order to do that, I believe I have to first understand the crucial aspects of that man's personality - Saburo-dono's."

"And then?" Chiaki urged him to go on. "After spending one year and ten months by 'Saburo-dono's' side, what do you think?"

Kotarou's expression appeared somewhat bitter and astringent. "...I feel increasingly perplexed."

"Oh...?"

"Last night, after returning to his room, Saburo-dono had spoken. Asking, 'Is this revenge'. Saburo-dono behaved in this way, tearing his shirt himself, as though he wanted me to look at his wounds."

--Isn't there something you should say? Isn't there something you should do, when I've become like this?

Kotarou had not been able to do anything.
After that, Kotarou was always thinking. If it were Naoe, what would he have said during that time? What would he have done?
He was always thinking.
Within this stretch of a year and ten months.
His simulation of Naoe should have been completely perfected. But every time Takaya began to speak, he would feel it strange and be dissatisfied. Kotarou had noticed this.

Takaya was restive. He would use those eyes of his to convey a kind of resentment. Although he did not reveal it in words, Takaya would use the expression in his eyes to communicate his feelings.
The candid emotions that broke out caused Kotarou to feel at a loss. Kotarou, who had no experience in matters of the heart or relationships, only regarded Takaya's unrestrained and merciless glare as a kind of savage device. In order to endure it, Kotarou had to become 'Naoe'.

What should be done in order for him to completely become 'Naoe'? Before Kotarou was consciously aware of it, he had already poured all of his mental effort into realizing his goal. Like the method of tempering the ninja. Become a perfect 'Naoe' in front of Kagetora, this was his goal. There were no emotions involved. There was only the mental determination of the ninja to become better that made him unable to leave the situation half-complete. That was all.

Chiaki quietly observed Kotarou's profile for a moment, he muttered as he hugged his knees.

"...Don't tell me, you..." Chiaki eyed the headlights of the cars that flowed past under the bridge one by one. "Did you want to be Naoe from the very beginning?"

Kotarou suddenly widened his eyes. "Want to be Naoe?"

"Seems like it. That's why you've been in agony all this while, isn't that so?"

"No. I only require more information. To resemble that man's mental profile."

"Then why are you this depressed and dispirited? ...Furthermore, it's almost like you feel inferior."

Kotarou fiercely widened his eyes, he stared at Chiaki with a terrifying expression. Feeling slightly scared, Chiaki retreated back a few steps.

"D-Don't be like that..."

Chiaki waved his own hand to placate him.

"If you can be this angry, you're becoming more of a human, Kotarou-san. But, if you're going to be using a person like Naoe as a template, I think it'd be better for you to emulate myself, you'd become a bona fide human being in no time. If you've that intention, I can be your life tutor anytime. How about it? We're close enough, no?"

Chiaki said, a sputtering sound came from the straw as he finished the Oolong tea.
Although Kotarou had very little facial expression, he appeared somewhat displeased. Then, it seemed as though he was once again absorbed in his thoughts.
Chiaki sighed, thinking 'Why is it that every brat is so uptight with his morals'.

"Eh?"

The winds changed.
The intense breeze at the harbor was suddenly weakened, a warm and composite spiritual gust began to encircle the district. Apparently, the vessel was approaching.

"Looks like it's here."

Stuffing the remaining portion of the meat bun into his mouth, Chiaki stood up. At this moment, Kotarou suddenly turned around and sharply yelled out.

"Yasuda-dono!"

"?"

As soon as he turned his head, multiple instances of loud raspy noises came from one side of the warehouse street. Startled, Chiaki focused on it with rapt attention, within the fog was a regiment of black objects.

"What is that...?"

"Wild dogs..." Kotarou could identify them from their scent. "It's a pack of wild dogs! Yasuda-dono!"

"What!"

"Just as we had guessed, you all have really come! Uesugi!"

From the middle of the pack of dogs came a resounding female voice, Chiaki and Kotarou were stunned.
Under the streetlight, the figure of a person appeared. When did she arrive? Dozens of dogs followed by her feet... A blond Caucasian lady. The woman wore a red tube, high boots and a red-striped black mini. Color-wise, her attire was very much like a military uniform. She was holding a whip that resembled the ones used for training animals.

"Hmph, you must be Yasuda Nagahide? A kanshousha of the Uesugi. We knew about the piece of information that had been leaked out to you very early on. Do not underestimate the Takeda's 'Ran Nami'."

"Really, I never expected a body-shaking sexy sister to show up." Chiaki laughed maliciously, spitting out the straw that he was chewing on with a 'Meh'. "...Has Yami Sengoku gone international?"

"What a pity. The harbor at which the Atake ship will be docking at has changed."

Chiaki and Kotarou stared at her at the same time.

"What...!"

"But I won't allow you guys to obstruct our operations. I alone am the only person here tonight. In order to take your pathetic lives."

"... Tsk. The Atake ship didn't come, a Caucasian in red boots came instead..." Chiaki slowly began to concentrate his spells. "Welcome to Yokohama. Want me to release some fireworks to welcome your arrival?"

"What a talkative Yasha. Just as Kousaka-dono had mentioned. The Uesugi are stubborn, bothersome brats." The woman's eyes glinted, a spiritual current rose from her feet, whipping her blond hair about. "I am Yamagata Saburou Byoue no Jou Masakage. Yasuda Jibu Shousuke! Let us settle our score at Kawanakajima here!"

That youth looked like a sportsman. His body was well-muscled, his skin still retained a slight tan even though it was winter. That worker by the name of Kitahara mentioned that he had seen the mermaids one week before the pictures were published in the weekly magazine.

"At that time, rumors were already spreading like wildfire around the district. The place where I saw the mermaids was in the southern sector of the islands. The sea surface was like how it is now, and its heads were bobbing about the water. At first I thought it was a buoy because it was dark during that time."

There had not been just one buoy-looking object, it was said that there were five or six above the surface of the water.

"They were flickering, those eyes. Like a cat's. I got a really huge fright. I yelled at my companions and we headed back to port in a flurry."

"Did they look like this?" Ayako took out the photos of the weekly magazine and showed them to Kitahara, he nodded.

"Yeah. That's it. I think this was pretty well shot. Definitely this sort of impression. Except that the head is a little..."

"Was the shape of their heads different?"

"This one is like it's nearly bald, right? The ones I saw still had some hair. Furthermore, they looked like those ancient samurai..."

"Samurai... really?"

"Yes, don't those defeated, exiled samurai normally have that sort of hair? Disheveled, long, and hanging down by the sides of their heads. That was what I perceived. But they had very little hair."

Hearing the words 'defeated, exiled samurai', Ayako and Takaya looked at each other at the same time.

"The ferryboat crew also mentioned that they often see them in this area." The senior worker from before interjected.

"Ferryboat?"

"Yeah. The boats that ferry between the Benten Causeway and Chigo fuchi, there's one every 15 minutes or so. If you're heading to the cave, it's faster by boat. I heard that the boat crew there often see them, you can go and make some inquiries."

Hearing this, the two of them immediately decided to follow the suggestion. They turned away from the yacht harbor and headed to the Benten Causeway ferryboat station. Despite it being a sunny day, the ferryboat station had a notice posted announcing that there was no ferrying service today.

"Because the cave has been closed." An elderly, male sailor, who was busy with the boats, said to them. "There was an accident of falling rocks yesterday in the cave. If the cave is closed, we don't get many customers. Moreover it's the off season, so all operations have ceased for the time being."

Hearing this, Takaya recalled the newspaper clipping he had looked at this morning. The sailor was meticulously cleaning the benches of the boats with a rag, he continued to speak.

"Are you here because of the mermaids? Yeah, they often show up. Coming out like a deluge before sinking back in again. Once they emerge, we would immediately announce on the speakers to inform the guests, saying things like 'mermaids have appeared on the right hand side of the ship'. Although the guests would be startled for a moment, they'd also be very excited."

"Do they often just appear out of the blue?"

"I think they'll become an attraction, it'll be cool, but the most important cave is now closed. It can't continue in this way. Some people travel here just to see the mermaids. Frankly speaking, this has improved business."

The sailor laughed.

"But, only a small section of the cave collapsed, that's the area where entry has been prohibited. It won't be long before the restrictions are lifted again, so don't worry too much about it... Just that when this incident started to make things around here more lively, the island however..."

"The island... what about it?"

"Oh, it's nothing. It started recently. The shops in the older section of the island's village, as well as the snack shops, have all closed and left."

Finding this strange, Takaya and Ayako wrinkled their brows.

"What happened?"

"I don't know either, I only work on this island so I'm not too sure, but I heard something like a reconstruction project for tourism development required everyone to move to the outlying islands."

"Move? Why?"

"I don't know. They never specified the details, even the residents find it annoying. Aren't they going to build some kind of theme park at Kanasawa Hakkei? Calling it the Hakkeijima Bay or something. There are rumors that Enoshima will be turned into something similar."

The sailor was clearly disgruntled.

"It's truly outrageous. Enoshima has done well because of its current state. The very reason that a Magnolia tree is treasured is because it has a touch of antiquity, no? If this place is turned into a theme park and so forth, the Goddess Benten would be angered. Did you know? Even though the Goddess Benten grants people wealth and fortune and has a gentle appearance, once she is angered, she is extremely terrifying. In fact, the 8-armed Goddess Benzaiten had once been persuaded by Minamoto Yoritomo-kou to exorcise the northern Fujiwara."

"Is that so..."

"There will be retribution if they go overboard. Don't you feel this way?"

"Yeah..." Ayako nodded absentmindedly, but the sailor's indignation did not disappear.

"It seems like there was one member of the project who opposed the plans, but this is something common. They honestly think that they can take all of the residents here for fools. Just how does the administrative body work these days...?"

"May I ask... is it possible to go to the cave today?"

"Well, you can't go in but you can hang around the entrance. The coasts in that region are pretty good, there are a lot of people there fishing as well. If you're heading to the inner part of the island, you may be able to see the mermaids but no guarantees. There's also a shrine on one side, you can have a look around."

After chatting with the amiable sailor, who gave them directions, they thanked him and left the ferryboat station. They passed by the Benten Causeway and returned to Enoshima, Takaya asked Ayako.

"What do you think? About the conversation just now."

"Hmm... can't really say much for now,... but I'm very concerned. Let's have a look around inside that island. I want to check for any strange changes to the shrine."

The two of them passed by the 'Bronze Torii' outside the entrance of the omotesando and began to make their way up the slope. Ayako's previous remark that it was 'strangely calm' was right on the money. Two-thirds of the local products shops on both sides of the slope were closed. They saw an inn-keeper pasting the sign 'Thank you for visiting' on the doors of his shop. His manner of opening the shop caused one to feel that he lacked any sign of vitality.

"It's so desolate. Enoshima should be so interesting that one would be strolling down the street of local products shops. On a usual day, the shops would always smell of steamed red-bean buns, causing one to think 'Wah, we're finally at Enoshima'."

The group of tourists walking beside them also felt that something was amiss in what was otherwise a perfect environment. Those closed shops, had they shifted already?

"Uh oh, what's going on over there?"

At the restaurant ahead of them, there was a commotion. They appeared to be locals. Both of them did not know what they were angrily shouting about.

"To think that those bastards have the nerve to interfere with the society's affairs!"

"They're really troublesome rascals, they should be driven away! Take them away together with the boss of Matsuya!"

"Kudou-san has already looked over there. Immediately call everyone here! Gather in front of the society's office!"

Each and every one of them appeared to be the owners of the shops. After a period of debate, they hurriedly dispersed.

"What were they making a fuss about..."

"Sir, are you here on a holiday?"

A innkeeper of the local products shop, of which Takaya was standing in front of, called out. She wore an orange apron, a young woman with tanned skin. She had straightened, blond hair, and her pink lipstick caused her skin to appear rather radiant, as if she was a summer beach girl.

"Huh... ah, yes."

"Please come in. We have red-bean buns too."

"...There's something I would like to know."

"Yes?"

"The group of people who made a fuss over there just now, what happened here? All of them seemed extremely angry..."

"Ah..."

The complexion of the young lady of the shop faded.

"The workers of those companies, that are forcing us to leave this place, have come to Enoshima shrine."

"The workers of the companies involved in the project? The ones that want to reconstruct Enoshima?"

"Oh, you also know about this, sir? Don't tell me you're one of the interviewers...?"

Ayako replied without the slightest hint of change in her expression. "Nah, I'm a freelance writer."

Then she pointed at Takaya and said 'this is a photographer', despite the fact that Takaya was not carrying any camera.

"We came to gather information regarding the mermaids. We heard a bit about the rumors of the relocation here."

"Oh really? They came to my house as well. Saying that they want to completely rebuild this region and construct a new sandou. They said that our shop will only be temporarily relocated. They also offered us a spot on the premises of the company's building for our business until the new omotesandou is completed."

The young lady hung her eyes in grief, folding her arms.

"They said that their company will be renting our land, every month we would receive payment, they also allowed us to lease the space for our shops without any conditions. Even though we still have our shop's business to handle, the company and city municipal will assist us in setting up our new homes. The terms are really reasonable,... just that my emotions are always... Furthermore, we started our business here a long time ago. Also..."

"You don't approve of the plan itself?"

"Yes."

They shop assistant raised her forefinger.

"Everyone feels that Enoshima will be completely altered by them, that's why they're against it. Enoshima has a kind of ancient ambience of simplicity. We don't wish for it to change into some strange holiday resort. Moreover the plan itself has aroused suspicion."

"Suspicion...?"

"The company involved in this plan is Kyoutake enterprise, seems to be quite a reliable group..."

"Kyoutake..."

This was a famous industrial association. Kyoutake enterprise was formerly a privately-owned, large-scale railroad company in Tokyo, that expanded into departmental stores and real estate. Succeeding in their growth, the scope of the company expanded in leaps. It also had a professional baseball team, Takaya often came across the name of the president of the group, who sponsored the team, in sports magazines.

"But why did they have to pick Enoshima? Is it because of the Shounan area?"

Indeed, this was an extremely suitable place to build a theme park aimed at the young people. But wasn't the primeval environment of Enoshima part of the reason that Shounan received attention? Ayako considered this for a moment.

"...May I ask, their wanting you to shift, is it like the people before, who used provocative words and actions? Like throwing stones, calling gangsters..."

"No, there's no such thing. They're really courteous. Just that there have been strange happenings."

The young lady replied.

"What sort of happenings?"

"The people living on the island, every night they would have a strange dream."

"Dreams... really?"

"I've had this dream as well. Including the rest of my family. When we asked around, everyone's dreams seemed to be similar."

Apparently, Takaya felt this to be a bizarre situation. Having allowed Ayako to handle the replies all this while, he now took the initiative to ask a question.

"What type of dreams?"

"Dreams of the Enma Daio."

The shopkeeper lowered her voice, as though she was discussing some taboo subject.

"The Enma Daio appeared in the dream and warned us. The Enma Daio mentioned that he intends to buy up Enoshima, he wants us to immediately leave as a way of protecting ourselves."

The two of them stared at her.

"The Enma Daio wants to buy up this island?"

"Yes. The Enma Daio said that there were too many of the dead in Hell at the moment, the place was already full, so he wants Enoshima to be a part of Hell. After a month, the cave's fuuketsu will open and the dead will emerge from Hell, that is the reason why it'd be better for us to leave. Furthermore, we have the same dream everyday."

Takaya's expression grew serious, he prudently asked another question.

"...When did all of you begin to have this sort of dream?"

"Around two weeks ago. Strange, isn't it? If it was just dreams then fine. Now, everywhere on the island, there are people who say that they've seen ghosts."

"Ghosts? Don't tell me they're the sentinels of Hell?"

"That's right. Just like in those ancient paintings, those hideous ghosts who torment the dead that have fallen into Hell. They have large bodies, carry a metal club, and wear the hide of a tiger, that sort of figures."

Takaya squinted, he pressed his hand against his mouth as though he was deep in thought. This situation was really unusual.

"Some have felt frightened and have left. Seems like the closed shops in this area are a result of this. It just so happens that the city municipal has prepared temporary accommodation for them, the current situation looks like some refugee migration."

"Temporary accommodation?"

"Yeah. Letting them stay there for the time being while they look for a new home. I heard from those people who left that since their departure they don't have those dreams anymore. They've also advised us that it'd be best if we leave as soon as possible."

--The Enma Daio wants to buy up Enoshima...

It was impossible for the president of the Kyoutake group to be the Enma Daio (even if Takaya honestly felt the appearance president, that he had often seen in sports magazines, to be devilish). Takaya looked at the other's expression for a while, then spoke once again.

"Just now, you mentioned that the members of the Kyoutake group have come to Enoshima shrine, right? Why are those people interested in the shrine?"

"I heard that they wanted to buy Enoshima shrine."

Ayako voiced out a 'Huh'.
"Buy Enoshima shrine?"

The young lady nodded.
"As a matter of fact, I'm a shrine maiden of Enoshima shrine."

Ayako and Takaya's expressions appeared as though they were thinking 'What?!', widening their eyes at the same time. This seemingly forthright young lady, who looked like a beach girl, was coincidentally a shrine maiden.

"Ah, please don't be so shocked. Even though the chief priest has always criticized my external appearance, some people have also said that there's a very Shounan flavor about it, not bad huh."

"...N-Now that you mention it... Shounan huh..."

"Lately, Father's health hasn't been good, so I'm temporarily taking a break from my duties at the shrine, returning to help with my family's local products shop."

Saying this, the shrine maiden's face became shrouded in a layer of haze.

"My father... actually he's the president of the self-government here. But because of the recent disturbances... it seems like his mental health has weakened."

"His mental health has weakened?"

"Yeah. Sometimes he would dream that he is traveling someplace, sometimes he would mention things about the ruler of Hell. He has grown thin as well. He's resting now, but eversince the start of this month he appears to be in extreme agony. Within this stretch of time, members who have opposed to the plan have also died unexpectedly, it's almost as if we've become isolated without any help."

She said nothing further. Takaya felt that this place was worthy of suspicion, he revealed a grim expression. The young lady recovered herself all of a sudden.

"Sorry. You guys wanted to know about Enoshima shrine, right? If that's the case, I can take you there. The chief priest has rejected the proposal to buy up the shrine, but the other party is fairly stubborn. If you want an interview, I can introduce you guys to him."

Takaya and Ayako looked at her agreeably. Ayako replied.
"Yes, please."

***

The long, gentle slope led to the sandou, there was a huge torii at their destination. Before the torii was a flight of steps leading upwards, the luxurious Gongen structure of the main shrine complex was positioned at the top. This was the Hetsunomiya, the front shrine. Hetsunomiya was also known as the shrine which housed the enshrined deity, Tagitsu-hime-no-mikoto. In reverence of the priest Yoshimasa, the shrine was constructed in the first year of the Ken ei era (1206 AD) under the orders of Yoritomo. The main building of the shrine was rebuilt during the 51st year of the Showa era.

On the left side of the main shrine was the octagonal building known as the Houanden. Offerings here were made to two Benzaiten goddesses: the Myouon Benzaiten and the eight-armed Benzaiten. The Myouon Benzaiten was the famous 'nude Benten', a naked statue of the Benten that possessed beautiful milk-white skin.

Legend has it that an evil dragon used to live in the waters of Enoshima, which committed all sorts of malicious acts against the people, causing the residents to feel extremely distressed. Later on, during the reign of the Emperor Kimmei, an isolated region of land appeared in the sea unanticipated. Benzaiten had descended on that island and punished the evil dragon. Thereafter, regular offerings were made to Benzaiten on Enoshima, and this Benten was named as one of the three influential Benten of Japan. During the Edo period, Enoshima's 'religious festival of the Goddess Benten' was celebrated with much fervor.

Takaya and Ayako followed the young lady of the local products shop - called Suga Natsuo - to Hetsunomiya. On the right side of the main shrine was an imposing building, it was the shrine office. A mass of shop-owners had already gathered outside the entrance to protest. Takaya and the others waited at a distance around the Houanden area for the assocates of the Kyoutake enterprise to emerge. They did not have to wait for long. Less than ten minutes later, the staff of Kyoutake enterprise came out from the shrine office.

As expected, they all wore Western-styled suits. There were seven of them. Among them, three seemed to hold the dual tasks of secretary and bodyguard. The one in the center appeared to be the representative, a burly middle-aged man. The long-faced man engaged in conversation with him was likely to be his secretary. Behind them was a man roughly around the same age, solidly built and bespectacled. Finally, there was one more. This man was much younger than the others. He was around 30 years of age, had a calm face and wore a black overcoat. He was probably another one of their subordinates.

Suddenly, the clamor of protests intensified.

"We won't let you guys have the island!"

"Get out! Don't let us see your faces again!"

With aroused feelings of anger and resentment, the group of innkeepers threw insults at them. But the representative seemed to pay no attention to it, he calmly made his way to the chief priest to send his greetings.

"That looks like the chairman of the Kyoutake real estate firm."

"Chairman? Then he is..."

"Yeah. The younger brother of the president of the Kyoutake group."

Takaya and Ayako stared at that man. That man called Tatsumi Yoshitsugu, was his elder brother the president of the Kyoutake group? A confidant. Tatsumi Yoshitsugu was now the delegate appointed by the board of Kyoutake real estate, handling all corporate matters of the organizations that came under the umbrella of the Kyoutake group.

Unexpectedly, he was also the person to personally see to this negotiation...

Natsuo lowered her voice and continued to speak.

"See those two men behind him? They came to my house before, so I know them. The more senior-looking one is called Yashiro, the younger one is called Kaizaki."

"Are they from Kyoutake real estate?"

"Yeah. What were their job titles again? Yashiro is the head of some department. Kaizaki's position is apparently higher than his. I heard that he's actually a distant relative of the chairman. He's not bad, eh?"

"Why did they go to your house?"

"They were there about the relocation, they came to notify us. I heard they went to every single household. They didn't leave such a bad impression after all. They were very polite too, I really liked that. But if I mention this, everyone else will get angry."

"I see."

"Yeah... But that's the type of man that women would want to sleep with."

After nodding, Takaya and Ayako went 'Ah?' as they stared at her dumbfounded.
But even if Kaizaki was a distant relative of the chairman, he did not have that aura of a young master. The man wore a pair of thin glasses, he looked like a young, brilliant industrialist. His half-opened eyes gave one the impression of nervousness, but there was no misstep in any of his movements or actions.

The shop-owners pressed around them as they shouted but were held back by the bodyguards. The chairman, protected by Yashiro, headed down the flight of steps. Then, at this point in time, Kaizaki, who was beside the chairman, looked towards them.

"Shoot! L-Let's go... Kagetora."

Ayako was startled, urging Takaya towards the electric-powered ladder station in front. Suddenly, there was a shriek from the shrine office.

"Huh!"

The two of them turned around in shock, the residents that had originally surrounded Chairman Tatsumi suddenly fell backwards onto the ground into a seating position, as though their knees had gone soft.

"Wahh!!" Natsuo, who was beside them, screamed as well.

"W-What is it! Suga-san--!"

"Over there! There's a ghost over there!"

Ghost...?!

Natsuo grabbed onto Takaya tightly, desperately trying to point in the direction of the shrine office. The faces of the shop-owners had also stiffened in terror.

"Ghost... ghost, there's a ghost!"

"Wahhh, ghost!"

Shouting in unison, the residents crawled backwards in retreat. But Takaya and Ayako could not see it. They could not see any ghost.

"Where? Sugo-san, just what..."

"There's a red ghost over there! It's wielding a metal club!"

"S-Stop, please! Wahhh!"

The shop-owners cried out, unable to bear the monstrosity of the situation, they began to flee. It seemed like a huge ghost was standing in front of Chairman Tatsumi.

Those brats...

It was not surprising that Takaya suspected them. The associates of the Kyoutake group appeared to be aware of the possibility of an encounter with a ghost, they showed no sign of being startled. Yashiro uttered something to Chairman Tatsumi. Tatsumi nodded, descending the steps together with his secretaries and bodyguards. After Yashiro and Kaizaki, who were left behind, finished with their discussion, they glanced at the shop-owners and descended the steps calmly. Apparently, the red ghost had disappeared.

"Kagetora..."

With a sharp expression in his eyes, Takaya watched the men leave.

***

In the end, Takaya and Ayako did not see any ghost.
After the disturbance, Natsuo experienced a bout of anemia owing to her shock, the two of them sent her home.

"I'm really sorry I didn't take you guys there... To have taken so much trouble to get there and yet..."

"It's okay."

Exchanging glances with Takaya, Ayako said to Natsuo. "If anything else happens, can you contact us? We may be able to help you."

"Yes... But, then..."

"Especially with anything regarding the Enma Daio. Say if the Enma Daio appears, etcetera, anything will do... Yeah, we're acquainted with spiritual investigators. But we can't guarantee that we'll be able to subdue the evil ghosts."

"I understand."

Natsuo replied with a dazed expression, Ayako gave her the telephone number of the hotel they were staying at. Then, they parted with Natsuo.

The two of them decided to investigate the internal section of the island.
To get from the Nakatsunomiya to the front of the botanical gardens on top, tourists usually used what was called the 'ladder', an electric-powered ladder for sightseeing, but its operation had ceased three days ago.

Takaya and Ayako carried out spiritual examinations as they made their way upwards, before taking a break in the square at the summit. The cafeteria beside the botanical gardens was closed as well. Ayako nibbled on crackers that she had bought from the vending machine at the ladder station as she brooded.

"It's strange. If it's a tsukumogami or some kind of apparition, we should be able to see it."

Despite having made it this far, they had not detected any whiff of a ghost.

"Only those people can see it." Takaya drank from a can of coffee and replied. "...It's possible that they'd been hypnotized."

"Hypnotized?"

Takaya nodded, he took out a coin-like object from the pocket of his jacket. Ayako held it up with her fingers.

"What is it?"

It resembled a five-cent coin, with a hole in its center. Some sort of characters had been engraved onto the black surface. Even though it was extremely worn out and very indistinct...

"They can't be Sanskrit characters..."

"It was on the exact spot where the ghost appeared. I picked up a similar one in front of Nakatsunomiya just now."

Takaya handed Ayako another coin. The surface was engraved with matching designs.

"What is it?"

"I think it's some kind of tool for a curse. The hole is emitting the 'air' of some kind of incense-like fragrance, get it?"

"?"

Ayako placed it on her palm, then covered the hole with her fingertip.

"Yeah... Looks like it's spouting out an interesting sort of 'air'. It's like mosquito incense."

"It's possible that this functions like a projector."

"A projector?"

"Yeah. The 'air' that is spouted out gives rise to the ghost that those people saw."

"This 'air'? But didn't we see nothing?"

"That's right, it doesn't work on us. Only those that have been specially hypnotized will be able to react to this 'air' and see the ghost. These things have probably been placed all over the island, every time someone passes by it, the residents that have been hypnotized will see the ghost."

"So it's not a real ghost but an illusion? But the hypnotism... who could've done this, and why would they do this?"

Takaya grew silent. He had already considered the clues.
"...Kyoutake's men, who witnessed the uproar by the residents who saw the ghost, were not the least bit startled."

"Then, they were the ones who set this up...?"

"Although we don't know for sure if they had personally set this up, at the very least we can deduce that they are aware of the existence of this witchcraft."

Takaya wrapped his palm around the can of coffee, he had been staring at the viewing platform all this while.

"The fact that every household was notified about this is enough cause for suspicion. Perhaps they'd hypnotized them during that time. Also, the dreams about the Enma... The combined hypnotism must've been rather dense."

"What are their motives for doing this?"

With a look that said 'Can't think of any reason', Ayako slanted her head, stuffing the cracker into her mouth.
"To drive out the residents? Aren't they being a bit too thorough if that's the case? Going so far as to prepare temporary residence like a refuge for them. Wouldn't this be called coercion? I'm still worried."

"It's also really strange that they want to buy up everything, including Enoshima shrine."

Takaya grasped the can of coffee in his palm, bringing the drink to his mouth.

"Turning this place into a holiday resort, what they're doing is way too artificial. Wanting to develop Enoshima into a tourist attraction and so on at this point in time, this is weird in itself, isn't it? If it was during an economic boom, then it'd be a different story..."

"That's right. I've always felt... that they intend to make the whole of Enoshima their own..."

But why...?

As he pondered quietly, a white cat emerged out of nowhere and ran close to Takaya's legs. Judging from its collar, it was probably raised by some family on Enoshima. Takaya stroked the cat's head and said.
" 'When the fuuketsu of the cave opens, the dead will return from Hell', Sugo-san mentioned this, right?"

"Yeah..."

"Heard about the unexpected incident of the falling rocks in the cave yesterday, causing it to close. This incident might somehow be related."

"Want to go check it out?"

Takaya answered with a 'Mmm', he stood up. "This incident may be linked with the mermaids. We better look into it."

"Understood."

Ayako replied, stuffing the last cracker into her mouth. The white cat appeared to be hungry and looked at her with imploring eyes, Ayako crouched down and stroked its head.
"You best be careful too and don't let any ghosts eat you, okay."

After that, the two of them left. The cat knelt on the ground by itself, gazing after them.

- Sakaki and Nikaidou are investigating the scene; Sakaki still doubtful of Nikaido's worth and makes sarcastic remarks; Nikaido tells Sakaki to stop it, saying that she'd sense some strange spiritual waveform in the place
- Sakaki is still sarcastic and somewhat distrustful; apparently Sasaki is very capable prosecutor
- they are now in the Kanagawa prefecture, Fujisawa city, at the residence of the deceased Gotou Haruo, a member of the city council, investigating his sudden death
- four days ago, Gotou, a fairly healthy 38-year-old with no history of ailments suffered sudden death in his residence in the early morning; most interesting is his cause of death -> health failure
- Sakaki heard that he was the nephew of Sada, the former chancellor of the Ministry of Justice; he also thinks his death doesn't have anything to do with the bizarre happenings of #36
- Nikaidou reasons that it's strange for a healthy man to suddenly show signs of weakening health and die 10 days after onset of symptoms; Sakaki still thinks time would be better spent investigating that youngster (Takaya)
- they then meet with Gotou's secretary and wife, Mayumi

- Mayumi tells them that her husband told her in a dream-like manner that he had been summoned by the Enma Daio, about 2 weeks ago; he would wake up at midnight, go to the garden and start praying to something, facing the southeastern direction; but by morning he doesn't remember doing that
- they realize the direction to be facing Enoshima
- Mayumi then says that her husband mentioned having toured Hell; every evening he would be taken by 10 kings in a dream and traverse the entire region of Hell, sometimes wanting him to disembowel himself, sometimes wanting him to walk on nails, thereafter his health began to deteriorate
- when asked why did her husband have such dreams, Mayumi doesn't know; she then tries to attribute the failure in health to problems in his work surrounding the plans of creating a tourist site at the estuary of Enoshima; this is a well-publicized undertaking in Fujisawa city, a plan to make Enoshima a tourist attraction; however this is only what appears to be the case on the surface, in truth some private company is intending to purchase all the facilities of the island
- collaborating with several MPs, they're planning to buy up Enoshima shrine, cave, hotels, restaurants to create a new tourist center
- Enoshima is well-known cultural center; the Shounan region was the birthplace of water sports events; even though it's mostly inhabited by young people these days, the traditions never died; except that now with this plans to transform it into a tourist attraction, Enoshima would be drastically altered
- Gotou was somewhat reluctant to proceed with the plans and brought the opinions of the locals to the board, after that this incident happened to him
- Nikaido asks Mayumi if her husband's dreams have something to do with Enoshima; Mayumi is uncertain but mentions that Gotou told her that the Enma Daio wanted his help to open the wind caves, thereby creating a passageway that leads to Hell
- the aforementioned cave refers to certain rock cave in Enoshima; from Enoshima shrine, in front of Okutsu shrine, inside the Iwaya cave; legend has it that this is the place where Benzaiten descended in the ancient times - the birthplace of Benzaiten's conviction; legend also says this is also the place where Koubou Daishi and the Nichiren holy priest practiced discipline, and many pilgrims have journeyed to this location since the early days; however after the accident with falling rocks in the 46th year of the Showa era, entry was prohibited; owing to constant requests to reopen the cave, the restriction was lifted on the fifth spring of the Heisei period, and now it's a popular tourist attraction
- how could that cave be the 'passageway to Hell'? Sakaki and Nikaido decide to investigate further

- Nikaido feels that the possibility of a curse is very likely, especially with the spiritual waveform she sensed; Sakaki thinks some kind of bribery was involved but muses that the Enma Daio can't be the one responsible; they agree that Nikaido will investigate the spiritual side of things and Sakaki will look into the MPs and company involved
- when Nikaido wants to investigate the cave and the surroundings, Sakaki asks her if she believes the rumors that have been spreading around of late; he thinks it's probably due to too much influence from the Loch Ness legend or due to some fish with human-looking face; the magazines are just cashing in on the latest hot topic
- Nikaido insists on going because there have been witnesses; she also cheekily adds that if she's lucky she'll bring him some beautiful pictures of the Shounan mermaid

***

About the periphery of the waters of Shounan, a certain strange phenomenon had become the hot topic of discussion.
Mermaids had been sighted.
This matter had once been the subject of conversation before, but this was the first time it was so wantonly covered by the mass media. Pictures had appeared in a weekly magazine two weeks ago.

'Mermaids Sighted on the Shounan Sea'

The pictures published, accompanied with this sort of heading, caught the attention of the public eye. Three objects were gathered together on the reef. They were approximately 120 to 130 centimeters in length. They really seemed like mermaids. A sack-like form hung down from their waists, which resembled fins on closer inspection.

Within a short period, the masses of society were in a furore. One by one, television programs and weekly magazines began to discuss this topic. Owing to media personnel and people hoping to catch a glimpse of the mermaids, the coasts of Shounan were bustling with unprecedented activity, despite it being the off-season for tourism.

Although some people have deemed the photos as hoaxes, the photographer who had taken those pictures was missing. Thus they could not determine if the photos were genuine or forged. But were numerous eyewitnesses of the mermaids, as though attesting to the authenticity of the photos. Furthermore, there were reports of fishing nets having been torn apart and divers had suffered incidences of being pulled down and nearly drowning. It appeared that academic researchers had started to conduct official investigations.

"If it's the blond mermaid princess, then wouldn't it be so romantic." As the car passed through the Zaimokuza tunnel, Ayako, in the driver's seat, mentioned. "But wouldn't it be funny if it turns out to be a brown-skinned mermaid taking a swim."

She looked towards the seat adjacent to hers, glancing at Takaya's expression.
Takaya had an unpleasant look on his face since morning. Was he still upset over the events of yesterday? Supporting his face with his palm, Takaya looked out at the coastline, he had not uttered a single word to Ayako. Takaya was in a bad mood. This was not something unusual to begin with but Ayako was still very worried for him, and thus could not bear it.

"Whatever it is, we can be sure that it's not some beautiful mermaid." Ayako said, taking the weekly magazine placed on top of the storage compartment and flipped it open to the page with the article on the mermaids. She handed the magazine to Takaya. Indeed, it did not have long, blond or decolorized brown hair but a bald, monk-like head. If it had not been properly photographed, it would probably be regarded as a sea monk rather than a mermaid.

"Perhaps it's some sort of monk mermaid, we can't say for sure."

Ayako felt it rather pointless to laugh at her own nonsensical jokes and could not help but sigh heavily. She drove the car down the 134 national highway, proceeding in the direction of Fujisawa. From Yuihama to the Inamura peninsula..., in summer the rolling waters by the Shounan seaside would be bathed in activity and bustle, however it was now completely desolate in the February season.

This region was famous for the suitability of its waves for surfing and water sports, thus it was dubbed the birthplace of water recreation. Even at this time, the figures of young people could be seen engaging in surfing and electric boat activities.

"But are there really mermaids? I'm quite skeptic about those photographs. This isn't some usual occurrence, right? Unidentifiable creatures and whatnot, it could be some bogus pictures for all we know."

"... They mentioned mermaids, it'd probably be easier to understand if they were actually manatees."

Takaya had finally said something, Ayako immediately continued the conversation as though she had been saved.

"Exactly. But this sort of topic is the kind of thing that everyone really loves. Didn't this happen before? What was it called again? Apparently, they'd discovered the bones of some rare animal on the shores of Akita, which led to an extremely huge uproar. In the end, it was just some whale bones. During that time, television stations, everything was concentrated on the gathering of new information. Special programs and so on were often broadcast as well. Everyone loved watching it."

"Not everyone, it's just you, right?"

"Aren't you interested in topics like the Loch Ness monster and stuff?" Ayako asked, unconsciously stepping harder on the accelerator, causing Takaya to become flustered.

"Hey, don't speed! I don't fully trust your rough driving skills!"

"... Then you should have gotten a driving licence."

Takaya sighed, he leaned his head against the cold, glass window. Takaya and Ayako had come to Shounan to investigate the hubbub surrounding the mermaids. But they were also investigating whether this was related to Yami Sengoku. They could see that the region's parking areas were occupied with a variety of vehicles from the different television stations.

"I feel that even if there were really mermaids, there shouldn't be any problem."

Takaya looked out at the rather broad winter sea, he murmured absent-mindedly. "I just hope that that they're not accomplices of the onshou."

"I don't want that either."

Once mermaids are mentioned, the average person would recall the Western version of the creatures, the beautiful half-man half-fish mermaids, but there were mermaids in Japanese legends as well. They were a kind of monster that resembled a kappa. In the stories that have been passed down since the ancient times, it was said that eating the flesh of a mermaid could confer immortality. One famous legend tells of the 800-year-old Buddhist nun from the small beaches of Fukui county. It was said that she was a Buddhist monk that had eaten the flesh of a mermaid and lived for 800 years.

"But why would mermaids appear in Shounan? I thought they would stay in the waters, a much cleaner place."

"Their sudden appearance in great numbers is quite the cause for concern. It'd be best if they don't have anything to do with the onshou..."

"This area... the Sagamiwan region was formerly the domain of the Hojo."

As was already known, with respect to Yami Sengoku, the Hojo were no more. Thereafter, this region should come under the control of the Takeda, however, at present, this area was becoming a half-neutral zone as the influence of the Takeda was waning. Could it be related to the fact that Ujiyasu was still alive? Although Ujiyasu never participated in the war, his mere 'existence' was an adequate opponent that kept the people in check. As a result, the Sagami region, within this stretch of time, remained peaceful.

"Perhaps it's some onshou attempting to create a disturbance, taking advantage of the Takeda's weakening influence. For instance, the Satomi."

"It's always those brats. The powerful onshou who always revolted against the Hojo. ...But I don't believe the Satomi, considering their level of strength, are responsible for this major disturbance if even the Takeda are cautious and don't seem to dare interfere in this region."

"That's true... Anyway, we should thoroughly investigate the situation beforehand. It'd be good if it's nothing. It doesn't matter if it's just a false alarm."

"..."

As the car waited at the red traffic light, Takaya discerned that Ayako was continuously looking at him.

"What?"

"Did you quarrel with Naoe?"

Takaya's face suddenly turned serious.

"You've been ignoring him since morning, haven't you? Insisting on working with me, it's because you don't want to be with him, right? I can tell from one look."

"It's none of your business."

"...Are you still bothered about yesterday's matter?" Ayako lowered her voice. "Umm. I don't know what he has said to provoke you and make you upset, but you can't really demand too much from him. You're unhappy because he didn't comfort you in the way you wanted, right? However, you're being quite childish in this way."

Takaya's eyes narrowed fiercely, but Ayako did not notice it.

"He's not having it any easier either. If you expect too much from him, he won't be able to satisfy you completely. Moreover, you've also..."

"Me?"

Takaya turned his head menacingly, startling Ayako as she returned his stare. Takaya glared at her with a frightening look in his eyes. "What are you suggesting about me?"

"No... ah... just..."

"I didn't expect that he would comfort me. Neither did I force him to do anything. Don't be mistaken. He's the one who doesn't want to come near me, that's all."

"Kagetora..."

"Whatever I do with Naoe has nothing to do with you. ...Don't bother about us."

"..."

Despite retorting with cold words, Takaya's intonation had no hint of aggressiveness. As he spoke, Takaya had hung his head sorrowfully, causing Ayako to feel a boundless grief. The Takaya who would become an individual that independently conducted operations during his work, would always display this miserable expression once he returned to his original self.

Even though Ayako felt it harmful for him to not reveal what was in his mind and heart, she understood the sort of personality that Takaya has. Without a doubt, he would stubbornly reject Ayako's attempts to get close to him. Ayako forlornly dropped the matter.

"...I understand. Here." Saying this, she gave Takaya a newspaper clipping.

"What is it?"

"It was published in today's newspaper. Nothing to do with the mermaids, but it mentioned Enoshima, so it caught my attention. You didn't read the newspaper this morning, right? Take a look."

Saying this, Ayako stepped on the gas. Takaya lowered his gaze onto the newspaper clipping.

'Enoshima Cave Falling Rocks'

An unexpected incident of falling rocks had occurred in the caves of Enoshima the day before. Although there were no casualties, the caves would be temporarily closed from this day onwards.
It did not seem related to the mermaids.

The 134 highway that would normally be packed with cars once the tourist season arrived was rather clear today. The many modern surfing shops that lined up next to each other along the roadside were desolate. The car traveled past the front of Shichiri beach and Enoden, Takaya looked at the muddy, circular outline of Enoshima on the left hand side with indifference. He once again rested his head against the window and closed his eyes.

***

At the cross-junction before the causeway, they turned left. 400 meters of the Eshima Causeway laid ahead of them. The image of the island floated before them, it was Enoshima.

Enoshima had prospered since the Edo period as the people worshipped the Goddess Benten. The area retained the atmosphere of the olden days where the people would journey to this place for a retreat. Crossing over via the Benten Causeway, they entered the island. The first thing that came into their field of vision, were the old shops of the village that padded the roadside, lined up closely, like fish scales, along the slope. This was the Omotesandou of Enoshima shrine.

Enoshima shrine was the place where offerings to the Goddess Benten were made. The shrine was further organized into three sections known as the Hetsu, Nakatsu and Okutsu shrines. All the residents of the island of Enoshima were members of this shrine's society. According to the society's newsletter, the Emperor Kimmei had made offerings to the three goddesses who had descended in the 'cave' during the 13th year of his reign. After unifying his mind and heart with the Gods, he prayed to the Goddess Benten, Aki's Miyajima, and Oumi's Chikubushima, standing together side by side as the 'three influential Benten of Japan'.

Here, they could sense the staunch conviction of the common people. This was a group of islands that possessed an ancient, hallowed ambience. Having reached Enoshima, Takaya and Ayako stopped the car at a nearby carpark and got out. The sea wind blew at them. Takaya felt cold, he drew the lapels his leather jacket closer together.

"It feels a bit strange..." Ayako said as she looked around.

"What? Are there any suspicious areas?"

"Mmm. Just feel the calmness to be strange. The local products shop isn't even open."

"Isn't it a public holiday today?"

"I don't think so... is it?"

Saying "Nevermind", Ayako looked towards the sea. "I heard that this is the best place to spot the mermaids."

This was the eastern sector of the islands. Nearby was the Enoshima anchorage for yachts. There were quite a few yachts docked at the pier mounted prominently against the backdrop of the sea. There was hardly any sign of people, probably because it was an ordinary day. The two of them decided to make a few inquiries from the local residents. They headed to the pier, and spoke with a middle-aged man, who was repairing a yacht. The man was around 40 years of age, had slightly tanned skin and a nice set of white, shiny teeth. He appeared to be someone who operated the yachts.

"Are you looking for eyewitnesses who have seen the mermaids? So you're the staff from some magazine as well, are you?"

"Mmm, ah. Yes."

"There have been many of late. Everyday, at least a few groups of people would come to interview us. Today's no exception. Look."

The man said and pointed in the direction of the Shounan coast.

"Recording the scenery over there. Apparently they're filming some program scheduled to be broadcast, called 'The Search for the Mermaids' or something like that. Other television stations have also done their own specials, I heard they were even offering prize money to anyone who can find the mermaids. Anyone who finds them would get a reward of some sort. But I heard that eating the flesh of a mermaid would preserve one's youth and life. If that's the case, the one million dollar reward seems a bit lacking."

The man smiled as he spoke. His personality seemed naive and carefree, finding the recent uproar somewhat amusing.

"I didn't see any mermaids, but a lot of the guests of our yacht society have seen them, they've been talking about this matter nonstop."

"Do you know the people who have seen the mermaids?"

"Yeah, lots. Even our staff here claim to have seen them."

Takaya and Ayako exchanged glances. It seemed like the mermaid sightings in this area have become an everyday occurrence.

"Apparently, you can often see them on the reefs in that area. Over there, behind the breakwater, called the Kamone reef, I heard that's the hot zone. Seems like the sightings are particularly frequent in the southern sector of the islands."

The man directed them as though he was lecturing about fishing locations, he continued to speak as he pulled the ropes of the large white yacht, skillfully tying the knots one after another.

"The photographer for that weekly magazine as well. As a matter of fact, I'm acquainted with him."

"You mean this one?" Ayako took out the magazine she had brought along. "The photographer who went missing..."

"Yeah. That's right, him. I wonder what happened to him. It's not like he stumbled upon God's secret. I know the place where he took those pictures. Can you see the lighthouse over there? The lighthouse of Shounan harbor. To the left, there's a reef known as Ebizuka. I believe that's the place."

Takaya and Ayako stared in the direction of the sea. It was roughly in the area where the small, red electric boats were shuttling past.

"Ah, the eyewitness has come. I'll call him over. Kitahara-kun...! Come here, come here, there are people who want to interview you!"

Walking out of the warehouse, wearing a jacket with printed designs, a youth turned his head towards them.

赤の神紋 Drama CD 3 - Jealous Yellow - Track 01 Survivor

From Chinese translations by Tang.

Draft: Version 1 - final
Notes: Not MOB-related ^_^
PS: do not distribute this without my permission

Renjou: I won't let you die! You can't just die in this place! Don't you die!! Haibara!!

Watanabe: Haibara!!

Renjou: Watanabe-san!

Watanabe: Renjou Hibiki, don't tell me it was you?! You stabbed Haibara?!

Renjou: I only brought him here.

Watanabe: Then who stabbed him?! Is his wound deep? Can Haibara be saved?! Hey, how is he!!

Renjou: Watanabe-san!

Watanabe: If anything happens to Haibara, I won't forgive you! Renjou Hibiki!!

Nurse: Blood pressure 40/70, please give instructions!

Doctor: Prepare for surgery!

Kei: Ah, Mickey, are you still here? I can't bring you anything to eat now, since I'm not working anymore, that brat should still be fine, right...

Renjou: Your existence alone doesn't make me suffer, it is because of this that I'm suffering!!

Kei: Renjou... It was an extremely cold night, the freezing outline of the moon much like a blade, a silent terror, the same as the night when Mother passed away. The actor who first played the role of Auguste - Nitobe Arata, we no longer competed with each other after that. While we were preparing for the dress rehearsal on the stage of Scarlet and Black, that incident happened. The director, Haibara Yuugetsu, had been stabbed.

Renjou: You've got to be kidding me, are you going to leave the scene because of this?! I've promised myself that I want to see Kei play the role of Auguste with my own eyes! I won't let you escape when you haven't done anything yet!! How can you die when you haven't had a taste of my own pain! Don't you die!! Haibara!!

Watanabe: He can talk now, do you want to see him?

Renjou: Does the wound still hurt?

Haibara: Sorry to have troubled you.

Renjou: I'm glad it's nothing more serious than this.

Haibara: ...When can I check out?

Watanabe: Doctor Matsuyama said the soonest would be after ten days.

Haibara: Ridiculous, just today and tomorrow will do.

Watanabe: Two days isn't enough!! You've just been stabbed in the stomach!

Haibara: I can't rest for ten days during this important period.

Watanabe: The play Macbeth has already been postponed, you can still catch up with the dress rehearsal after you've checked out of hospital!

Haibara: I wasn't referring to that, if we don't have a dress rehearsal now, the strong team spirit we have at this moment, which is hard to come by, will collapse. If it does, we won't be able to recapture that later on.

Watanabe: Do you believe you can direct a play in this condition? You can't manage the dress rehearsal with your current predicament, you would collapse after watching it... if the wound were to tear open again, if your heart were to stop beating, you'll die...

Haibara: It won't... anyway the play is the top priority...

Renjou: What kind of person is he? Just moments ago, he was one step away from Hell's gate, yet he still prioritizes the play despite his current condition?

Haibara: I will take care of my wound.

Watanabe: Are you trying to intimidate me?

Haibara: Anyway, I have something to say to him, can you leave us for a while?

Watanabe: I just wanted to inform you that the dress rehearsal today has been postponed.

Haibara: Let me direct the scene during the dress rehearsal, as per usual.

Watanabe: Nevertheless, there's no dress rehearsal today! Be obedient and stay here!

Haibara: Aren't you going to wash your hands?

Renjou: Eh?

Haibara: They're covered with my blood.

Renjou: Oh, ah...

Haibara: We've met before in New York, haven't we? Do you still want to kill me?

Renjou: I don't have that intention anymore. Still, about the attempt on your life...

Haibara: You didn't tell anyone, did you?

Renjou: That was Sasaki Youichi, the one playing Malcolm in this version of Macbeth. You should notify the police, even if he's the best casting choice, you were almost killed.

Haibara: That doesn't matter to me.

Renjou: Doesn't matter?! Would you still be able to direct if you lose your life?

Haibara: I'm not intending to do him a favor, neither did I say that I will forgive him, I only want that play to be produced with the highest level of perfection, I won't allow anything less.

Renjou: Is it really fine this way?

Haibara: Compared with this, I'm more worried for Sasaki. He must now be in a state of panic after stabbing me. He's a timid man. If he's forced into a corner with no way out, he would do unthinkable things, he would definitely attempt suicide. I have something to request of you.

Renjou: Don't tell me...

Haibara: Help me find Sasaki, I want to persuade him to return to the dress rehearsal.

Renjou: But-!!

Haibara: If he doesn't return now, he won't be able to stand on the stage for the rest of his life.

Renjou: Is this really fine? Telling me this, I'm not someone standing on your side, you know that, don't you? You don't believe that I will expose this matter? You don't believe I will destroy your stage?

Haibara: I don't believe so.

Renjou: What...

Haibara: Because you want to see the complete play that I've created.

Renjou: He has seen through everything. Yes, this man who created Divine Red.

Haibara: Can you go?

Renjou: I understand, I will bring Sasaki back.

Kei: (panting)... Haibara-san, may I know where Haibara-san is?

Renjou: Kei!

Kei: Renjou?! Why? Shouldn't you be... covered in blood... it can't be that...

Haibara: That voice... is it Kazuragawa?

Kei: Haibara-san! Haibara-san!!

Renjou: Kei, why are you here?

Kei: I received Watanabe-san's phone call, so I rushed over here, I heard you were stabbed, I thought you would die.

Haibara: That brat, Watanabe...

Kei: When I thought you would die, my heart was about to stop. If you were to die, I... I... God... ... Haibara-san?

Haibara: I will not die.

Kei: Ah...

Renjou: Haibara's hand is stroking Kei's hair tenderly. Reminds me of the portrait of the Holy Mother in the church in my hometown. I've no way of coming between these two.

Haibara: Have you grasped the character of Julien?

Kei: Haibara-san?

Haibara: 19th-century France was a world full of deceit, the political revolution had long passed, with the reactions to the restoration of the monarchy, the entire capital city was adorned in dust. Julien is a man who is easily wounded, thus he is heavily suspicious of others. What you have to show on stage, is a person so sensitive that his self-respect and heart would cry out in grief excessively, with the mere rattling of his wings. Do you understand this?

Kei: Yes...

Haibara: Because he loathes hypocrisy, he is in search of the truth, but owing to his relentless pursuit of the truth, he has become confused. Do you understand this?

Kei: Yes...!

Renjou: Even at this time, are you intending to direct Kei's performance?

Kei: It's enough, please don't say anymore, I won't have any problems, I will coordinate my act with Nitobe-san.

Haibara: Don't waste away the time that you have.

Renjou: Kei...

Kei: Let go of me!! You've always been like this from the start until now, haven't you?! Did you think I was ignorant about everything?!

Renjou: What are you talking about?

Kei: You're really inhuman! You did that, didn't you!

Renjou: You suspect me? No!!

Kei: Then where did the blood on your hands come from?! You returned for the sole reason of doing this?!

Renjou: It wasn't me!!

Kei: If it wasn't you, then who was it?!

Renjou: That...

Kei: So it was really you!! To think that I still trusted you, are these your true colors?!

Renjou: Kei, listen to me!

Kei: Haibara-san is my dream, if you want to take Haibara-san away from me, then stab me! Kill me!! I've had enough of this!!

Kei: When I reached the hospital, Mother had already stopped breathing.

Renjou: Do you believe this is a repeat of the previous time?

Kei: You want revenge, right? Revenge because I didn't choose you? Because I didn't act in your play? That's why you did this to Haibara-san...

Renjou: Kei!

Kei: I've had enough!! I gave in to your whims and fancies, allowed you to manipulate me. You injured me as you wish because everyone made fun of you. You know very well the person responsible for my inability to do anything!! So that's why you let me suffer!! If Haibara-san were to die, I will break my throat, so that I won't have to talk to you ever again!!

Renjou: (laughs) ...Kei... ...Haibara's blood... ...I've to find Sasaki Youichi...
