Mirage of Blaze Memorial: 氷結の夜 -THE GUILTY NIGHT-

It seemed like it had been snowing for quite some time, no wonder it was so tranquil.
Sitting by the kotatsu wearing a yukata, calculating the day's expenses, Naoe placed the PDA to one side and softly closed his accounts notebook.
Nearby was Aizu's Lake Inawashiro, an onsen among the mountains, he had heard that the snowfall this year was low. The lady boss of the ryokan had said that the sparse amounts of fallen snow had almost been completely melted away by the sunny and cloudless weather for the past several days, business for the ski resort had become extremely difficult.

This ryokan, managed by a friend of the Tachibana family, appeared to be among some of the most famous inns in this region. Each and every one of the rooms in the hotel had their own distinctive construct, several tearooms had also been built. If one really wanted to stay on, each night would cost thousands. It would be fairly acceptable to occasionally celebrate the New Year in a place like this, that was why they had traveled such a distance to this location. However, because of the people participating in this outing, it was now apparently impossible to welcome the first month of the New Year peacefully in this quiet, luxurious ryokan.

Obliging Ayako's request, everyone had rushed to the karaoke box, for this reason the room had finally returned to this precious moment of tranquility.

At last, some peace and quiet...

The rare atmosphere of the onsen had also disappeared without a trace. As a result of the arrival of that group of guys who loved bustling about noisily in excitement, it was no longer reasonable to expect a peaceful start to the new year. Thinking in this way, Naoe, who had remained in the room by himself, sighed and looked up at the grid pattern of the ceiling. However, if he had remained in his own home, he would have to tide that especially punctilious type of a New Year festival with his parents and relatives, wasn't the situation here still much better in comparison?

Even so, it seemed as though he was not fated to have a calm and restful New Year. Judging by the looks of things, they would probably return at around midnight. How nice would it be if they could just politely go to sleep in their futon after returning. In any case, they would definitely have a drinking session in the room. Now was the only opportunity for a moment of placidity.

He looked out the window at the flower garden on the opposite side. The outside appeared to be rather chilly. Naoe immediately closed the fusuma as the cold air had begun to bite at his neck.

At that very moment.
The sound of the opening of the sliding door came from the entrance, Naoe turned around.

"Takaya-san...?"

Walking into the room, Takaya peeled the ryokan's short outdoor coat off his yukata. He should have been out with Chiaki and the rest at the karaoke, but it seemed like he had returned early, by himself.

"You are back. It's still so early. What happened to Haruie and the others?"

Takaya had an angry face, he snuggled into the kotatsu.

"Are you okay?"

"Seriously, why do those guys have such low alcohol capacity? I won't bother with them again. They end up like this every single time, that's why I came back."

Crying out in this way, Takaya took the orange on the table and started to peel it. Judging from his appearance, he was most likely annoyed with Ayako, he had seen several times how she would make a scene of herself when drunk. Ayako's inebriated behavior was known to all.

"I hate drunks for this very reason. I don't care. No matter what, I won't drink with those guys again!"

"...Looks like you suffered considerably."

"All because you didn't come along! Those guys didn't listen to me at all!"

"They can only behave informally during the time of the New Year, perhaps you could pardon them on these grounds?"

"I'm angry because they behave like this even when it isn't the New Year. What were you doing just now?"

"Calculating money." Saying this, Naoe placed the accounts PDA beside the chair. "The travel costs and other expenses, I wish to provisionally relocate funds from home for our expenditure."

"The real estate company's funds right? No harm in that."

"Do you want something to drink? I can make tea right away."

"Beer."

"... Takaya-san."

"It's okay! It's no fun drinking with someone who's already drunk."

"So drinking with someone who is sober is more entertaining? That isn't the point."

A wry smile appeared on Naoe's face, making Takaya a little angry. In Takaya's opinion, if he was with someone who did not have a good amount of self control, the other party would usually be the first to get drunk. Consequently, he would be forced to look after that drunkard, as a result he scarcely had any pleasant memories of drinking with other people.

Even if not for this reason, Takaya was once completely opposed to the idea of alcohol as during his days in secondary school he had personally witnessed his father's shameful antics when he was drunk. (Although he could not drink in the first place as he was not an adult yet) From his acceptance of beer after all those troubles, could it be said that Takaya's estrangement from his father had eventually melted away?

Thinking of this matter, Takaya's eyes fluttered to a distant location.
Naoe looked at the side of Takaya's face.
The two of them were silent, the room suddenly quietened down, there was only the distinctive sound of the heater. The faint sounds of the karaoke originated from the direction of the main building.
For a brief period of time, the two of them listened to the silence among the mountains in this way.

Takaya took notice of his line of sight.

"What?"

Naoe lowered his head and smiled. "Nothing. It feels as though I am having a dream, being together with you in this way."

"Dream? Idiot. What are you saying? You're exaggerating right."

"How about going to the onsen again? The onsen water here is rich and gentle, I was told that no matter how many times you soak yourself in it you would not feel uncomfortable. It would be nice to watch the snowy scenery from the outdoor baths."

"There's an outdoor onsen?"

"But we have to walk to the main building."

"I see." Takaya said, pushing his damp fringe to the side.
"I don't hate the outdoor onsen... With mountains like these, there'd be a scent of the winds and trees, it'd surely be really comfortable. There's also the sound of the stream..., however many hours you soak in the baths, you'd still feel that it isn't enough."

"...Seems like this is not your first visit to an outdoor onsen."

"When I was really young, I went to one with my old man. Where was that? Kinugawa, I think? I've memories of taking a ferry across a river."

Naoe listened to Takaya's words with a gentle expression. "I see. With your father."

"Yeah... It was a company holiday or something. At that time, Miya was still a baby, so Mum couldn't come along. Since that was my first time going to an outdoor onsen, I remember I was so excited that I soaked in the baths until I was dizzy."

"Your father probably went through a lot of trouble."

"He couldn't afford to relax and drink with his colleagues, could he? He got flustered because of this little kid. Now that I think about it, I feel like I'd done something horrible."

Naoe laughed, Takaya scratched his head in an embarrassed manner, he looked at the vacant space rather absentmindedly.

"...During that time, he was still a good father."

"..."

Naoe gazed at Takaya, he stopped smiling. Takaya drooped down those eyes of his which would occasionally reveal an extremely lonesome expression for a short instance, then a soft smile abruptly reappeared.

"Why did I recall that matter? --It's definitely because of you."

"Because of me?"

"You're really similar to how my old man used to be when he was younger. Wearing that sort of bathrobe, sitting in that place smiling at me..."

Naoe was somewhat surprised. Appearing like he was taking unnecessary pains to study an insignificant problem, Takaya's line of sight fell onto the orange in his hand.
Only now did he realize this point.

Takaya would occasionally merge the image of his father with his [Naoe] body, Naoe was vaguely aware of this. The father who should have protected him, was nevertheless the person who had hurt Takaya - he did not have any feelings for the other besides hatred. Undoubtedly, Takaya still hoped that he could always see the former appearance of his father - the one in his memories - and thus integrated a certain part of him with Naoe, that was why he could pour out his true emotions to an outsider.

"..."

Takaya lowered his head, unintentionally revealing an unpretentious smiling expression.

"Thank you."

"Takaya-san..."

"You even brought Miya along. My old man couldn't stay home due to work during the New Year celebration this time around. So Miya and I were left to ourselves. That girl Miya, was so happy to the point that she felt ashamed. Because she has never been to an onsen or anywhere interesting. You definitely find it awkward right."

"Not at all." Naoe said, remembering Miya's smiling face. Apparently, she now regarded Ayako as her elder sister, the two of them were already completely familiar with each other. Naoe was well-aware of Takaya's side appearance when he saw Miya's excitement, despite uttering "What a lost case", the expression in his eyes had been extremely tender.
To be able to provide him with a period of calmness, Naoe felt extremely happy whenever he could bring forth Takaya's gentle nature.

"So, wanna go bath in the onsen? You went by yourself just now right? There's no need to look after the place and whatnot. Let's go to the outdoor onsen together. The outdoor onsen!"

Takaya proposed innocently, Naoe replied with the face of a protector.

"Even if I really wish to do that, I cannot soak in the onsen together with you."

"Why? It'll be fine."

"If you want me to help you wash your back, I will do so. However I cannot bath together with you in the same onsen."

"Why? There's no need to be so polite."

"Because I am your retainer."

Takaya widened his eyes in shock. There was a slight difference in Naoe's appearance, the expression of a subordinate adhering to caution and reason. Takaya was somewhat irritated by this.

"Don't bother about that. That sort of matter..."

"A retainer sharing the bath with his lord, this would be an extremely preposterous circumstance."

"What old-fashioned stuff are you talking about? People like Chiaki don't pay attention to these sort of things."

Naoe suddenly restored an especially hidebound appearance, he looked at Takaya.

"I am different from Nagahide. To me, you are nothing but my lord. Even if you wanted me to make a hasty move on you, I myself will not allow that sort of thing."

"We cannot become intimate." Naoe's manner expressed this. Takaya closed his mouth, he looked back at Naoe.

It could not be breached no matter what, that particular dividing line-. Naoe would constantly remain committed to this point when all was said and done. However, perhaps owing to the existence of this dividing line, a balance had been strenuously preserved in their endless relationship thus far and could continue through time.

Thinking of this, Takaya behaved as he always did previously, he accepted his words.
If he were to say anything else, they would be merely be the willful words of a child. As he began to understand him, Takaya became well-aware of the inequality in this relationship. He told himself that this relationship would not last if not maintained in this way.

"I see." Uttering this, Takaya seemed lonely for a brief moment. Naoe noticed it.

"I am your lord..."

"..."

"If we grew closer, you'd be unable to figure out your own position."

Naoe lifted his head.
Takaya brushed his hair aside again, adorning an adult-like countenance.

"I can't break that sort of link between us right."

"Takaya-san..."

"I understand. It's alright, I'm not a kid. I won't do anything that will worry you."
Takaya smiled as he spoke. "I too... want things to stay as they are now."

"..."

Takaya stood up, wanting to exit the room. Naoe chased after him and grabbed his wrist.

"Naoe?"

"Let us go for a walk. I want to take a breath of fresh air outside."

"..."

Seeing the sharp expression in Naoe's eyes that clearly wanted to blurt out something on his mind, Takaya widened his eyes slightly. As though he was suggesting 'Follow me', Naoe walked out. Takaya exhaled, his body felt a bit nervous.

"Is it snowing outside?"

***

The night among the mountains was extremely cold as expected. The cold wind penetrated the bone. His damp hair was exposed to the cold air, causing the area around his temples to ache. Even so, his body still felt warm as it had not been long since he last soaked in the onsen, otherwise it would not have been possible for him to just walk outside in those clothes. The snowflakes rained down like cotton, but it had not reached the stage where an umbrella was needed.

They came to the courtyard. There was no sign of anyone nearby. Takaya faced the wide back of Naoe heading in the direction of the somber valley and softly asked.

"How far are we going to walk?"

"...It would be better if you stayed indoors."

Naoe did not turn back. Takaya shook his head like a difficult child.

"It's okay. I want some fresh air."

"If you to take a breath of fresh air, it would be better to do so while bathing in the onsen. You can get there from the hall. You will catch a cold like this."

"You're the one who will catch a cold."

"I'm fine. Anyway, you can't go on like this. Please return."

Despite saying this, there was no hint of rejection in Naoe's tone. From the courtyard, Naoe went down the stairs in the direction of the valley. The shrubs that appeared under the lighting were already adorned with a dull layer of snow. Takaya followed behind Naoe. The sound of the stream could be heard from the other end of the darkness. A cold breeze blew up from the bottom of the valley.

"Naoe."

Takaya called out as though persuading him to stay. Stopping beside the line of lights that illuminated the stone steps, Naoe turned around.

"Don't go on any further."

"You... it does not matter if you don't follow."

"Whatever it is, don't go on any further. Don't go to that cold place by yourself. You'll really catch a cold."

His voice became stiff, seemingly not because of the cold. As though he was apprehensive about something, Takaya showed a fearful expression. Naoe looked up at him, he replied coldly.

"I want to ease my mind a little. Please don't follow me."

"...!" Takaya's face turned red all of a sudden, he stared at Naoe. "If you didn't want me to follow then you should've said so earlier!"

"Takaya-san," suddenly replying in a serious manner, Naoe said, "I am someone who must obey you."

"..." As if he had hit him right on target with his words, Takaya froze.

"We can never have the same social status or position. Neither do I expect this. Perhaps for as long as we exist, you and I can never have the same level of existence. It is impossible for you to be anyone else other than someone that I have to obey..."

"...Naoe."

"No, there is one." Naoe's expression grew sharp. "If these positions are reversed, God would permit it."

Fear flashed across Takaya's face, he turned around wanting to return. However, Naoe grabbed onto his wrist, firmly brought him close, embracing him from behind.

"...Were you thinking of submitting to me?"

"What are... you saying..."

"If you do as I say, you will feel a pleasure like no other."

Muttering in this way, his right hand slid into the lapel of Takaya's clothes. The cold fingers caressed him up to his nipple, Takaya's body could not help but stiffen.

"Wait a minute..., I..."

"I wish to tell you these feelings."

"Let go...! Are you mistaken somewhere...!"

"I am not a replacement for your father. I don't have that sort of qualification. I am more selfish, a filthier person. The more you place your delusional hopes on me, in the end you will definitely be injured by the truth of who I am."

Naoe's right hand was like a tease, stroking Takaya's chest.

"We can only walk one path. One who obeys, and one who employs obedience. Other than this, there is no second path."

"...damn you!"

Naoe moistened his forefinger by licking it with his tongue, then lightly twisted the erect nipple. Takaya shut his eyes, he wanted to stop the other's hand, however, as he was being held by Naoe's arm, he could not move.

"Ah... ah..."

"Don't pretend that you did not see this coming."

Naoe's hand parted the lower folds of his garment, and lifted his thigh. Takaya shivered the instant the object between his groin was fondled with.

"Ah...!"

"The rock bath-house on the second storey, if we lock it nobody can enter." The man mumbled beside his ear in a forcefully sexual voice. "Do you want to go there?"

"No.... that sort ... of place..."

"Is that so?"

"Ahhhh....!"

His tip was being played with, Takaya arched his neck, tears slid down from the corners of his eyes. The man sucked in his tears with his lips.

"What a truly stubborn person..."

"Your hand... stop it...!"

"You can't handle this intensity? You are not that weak a person, are you?"

"Don't... play there.... please!"

"You were the one who lured me into this, Takaya-san. I am a 'man'. Don't worry. Tonight I shall make you go mad with passion..."

"...!"

His heart jumped violently.

Within the lower folds of the disheveled yukata, the man's middle finger entered the crack between the haunches. After the licentious finger had invaded and ravaged, he then leisurely rolled the two balls in his hands. The yukata slid off his shoulders, with his clothes in a disordered mess, Takaya grabbed the head of the man standing behind him as his heated breaths came out in gasps.

"Even if... you do this sort of thing... I'll definitely..."

"Why don't you try escaping? It would be over if you run. Aren't you disgusted by this?"

"You... don't have any way of overthrowing me... Definitely... can't overthrow me..."

"You will submit to me."

"I won't, submit to you..."

His shoulders heaved as he panted, Takaya's piercing eyes look askance at the sky.

"I will definitely not lose to you!"

Naoe's hand shook slightly in shock.

Takaya closed his eyes and breathed fiercely.

"Kagetora-sama..."

"If you think this is a lie, then go ahead and try me. I will not lose to you... No matter how much you torment me, you can't... make me surrender."

"..."

"Isn't that right?"

Naoe endured the gaze of the other as he [Takaya] looked over his shoulder, eyes that resembled a sharp blade, he quietly held his breath.
At that very instant, he realized he had a fierce tiger that had been liberated from its shackles in his hands.
The ferocious tiger hid its fangs, braced itself by holding its breath.
Aphrodisiac-like sweat oozed out from the beast's skin.

"....nnnhh..."

Subtle groans leaked out from the beast's throat. As though he was being lured in, the man's hand crawled to his throat, the fingers explored his lips. His middle finger slid into the slightly gaping mouth, the fingertip played with the hidden tongue.

"I will... conquer you."

"...You... aren't capable of that..."

"I am a... man." Mumbling into his ear in a hoarse voice, Naoe continued to lovingly caress the beast's limbs. "The more you cannot measure up to your opponent, the more you want to conquer it. I can't always allow myself to be suppressed by the superior, can't always be reasonable. I am merely a man who will feel humiliated whenever I am intimidated by you."

"It's not like this... You're... always calm and... tender-"

"I... want to bring you shame."

"...No..."

"I want to shatter your haughty self, that diamond-like, beautiful pride of yours. I want to take you here, humiliate you until you wish for death."

"!"

The man's lustful member pierced strongly into the soft folds of the beast's buttocks. Holding back the groans that were on the verge of leaking out, the beast in Naoe's hands was now in a horizontal posture on all fours.

"Why..."

"Because... I love you."

"This type of action isn't love. It's just... violence..."

"But, doesn't it feel pleasurable?"

He desperately refrained from making any sounds in order to not yield to the man's teasing. Catching his breath, Takaya closed his eyes.

"Don't hold back... Make some noise."

"Ah... ah!"

"Do you want more? Do you want me to be more intense?"

Takaya only continued to shake his head.

"-Don't lie anymore."

"I'm not lying..."

"You should be tired of lying."

"...nnnhh! ..."

Following the man's progressively stimulating actions, his body followed suit and convulsed unceasingly. In order to endure it, he firmly grabbed onto the gravel on the ground. Tears streamed out of Takaya's eyes, his body moved with the man's swaying motion, amidst the feelings of humiliation, he also felt pleasure.

The man behind him did not expect arms that would turn around and embrace him, neither did he expect any reciprocation...
Or perhaps, he was afraid of obtaining reciprocation.
Would the people say that this was a selfish kind of love?
Feel that this was a love that could not be reciprocated...
Would the people condemn this as 'cowardice'?

"Not a lie..."

As he endured the man's vigorous actions, the white beast continued to mutter in an inane manner.

"This is not a lie..."

Frozen by the winds from the valley, blasting at the man as though chastising him for violating the beast.
The naked tiger who had been forced into this miserable position endured the pain and pleasure, gripping the gravel on the stone steps.
The heated piece of flesh thrust continuously into the skin assailed by the cold wind. Fiercely rocking his waist, the man grabbed the hair of the other with his right hand.

"Even in this way... can you still deny being conquered?"

"Nnnhh... ah...!"

"You are clearly feeling pleasured."

Muttering in this way, the man expertly toyed with the biological object between the beast's thighs. Whenever the pointed end received a stimulation, the flexible abdomen of the beast would convulse for a spate of time.

"Can I lick it?"

"No...! Stop it..."

"This thing of yours, you still don't have any experience of coming in another's mouth, right?

"Ah...!"

His body was turned over, the man's powerful hands forcefully spread his legs apart. As though he was impatient, the man opened his mouth, with his burning lips and tongue he swallowed the part of the beast that was already erect, then fiercely began to stroke his most sensitive areas in a greedy manner. As this sensation nearly drove him mad, the beast even forgot to repress his moans, what little of his remaining modesty could not stop his body from welcoming the pleasure either. The sounds of his pleas to stop this conduct had became nothing but expressions that communicated his body's feeling of pleasure to the perpetrator.

"Let go, Naoe...!"

The man continued with his actions. His saliva smeared all over, his tongue slithered about the tendons and muscles, he rubbed with his fingers, a sadistic smile appeared on his face as he murmured.

"What a truly naughty object... Being so vigorously happy in this way."

"Please, your mouth... let it go..."

"It's okay..."

"No! Quick..."

"... let me see you shoot."

"Ahh!"

The bitter liquid spurted into the man's mouth.
His shoulders shuddered intensely as he gasped for breath, his chest heaved violently, Takaya closed his eyes painfully. The purifying liquid remained beside his mouth, Naoe looked over him with an expression of a mad dog.

"Looks like you can come ten more times."

"Naoe....."

"Even if you beg me tearfully, tonight I will not stop. Be it ten times or twenty times..., I will pleasure you until you can no longer come. Even if it drains me I will not let you go. Until you say 'Please forgive me', 'Please let me go', abandon everything, kneel and implore me, I will not stop."

Tears slid down from the beast's eyes. "I definitely won't... implore anything..."

"I will make it such that you will have no choice but to do it. Until you are subdued by me."

"I definitely won't... be subdued by you."

"How much must you intimidate me before you're satisfied!"

Crying out in this way with a look that was close to desperation, Naoe buried his face in Takaya's neck.

"This is how I love you..."

"..."

The one and only dictator--
Brimming with more charisma than anyone else, more beautiful than anyone else, an existence greater than anyone else, whenever he was compared to a human of the same social standing, he would witness his entire purity with his own eyes - it could be said that he was the current ideal of humanity, despite thinking in this way he [Takaya] nevertheless intimidated the fundamentals of his own existence.
Being in love with him simultaneously affirmed the moment of his defeat.
Naoe was deeply aware that he had acknowledged him and could not resist him. If he could for the sake of love give up the person he was attached to, he would definitely be able to break free from this emotional situation. Was a person ignorant and stupid if he experienced a clash between his love for another and his love for himself resulting in suffering...? Wouldn't the people say that this love was wholly intentional?

I love him in this way yet...

I cannot but consider you a person who threatens me and be jealous with loathing...
The defeated exists for the sake of his beloved victor.
Allowing you, the victor, to increase in your brilliance, if only I could have no feelings of resistance and pain owing to this matter, if only I could feel happy for this, how blessed would I be then. Conceding to my own defeat, that was the moment of my humiliation and despair when I realized that my disgrace simply allowed the victor's renown to increase in magnificence. But then, I could not abandon everything and surrender to my fate of playing the part of the clown for your sake either.

I knew perfectly well that I was at a loss at what was to be done yet I could not completely give up on myself, a true failure...
Do you understand the suffering of this sort of person?
However, without a doubt, you are extremely aware of the fact that you are the winner.
Every single person acknowledged this. The people acknowledged this.
The prominence of the great victor that you are...
Surely it was because of the loser that I am that allowed you to achieve this.
Exhausting this life...

"Naoe...?"

"..."

To Takaya, even though he could not comprehend Naoe's suffering, he could not ignore this matter when he was being assailed by the cold wind in this way, seeing the only existence who was capable of giving him warmth shed tears.
Although he knew that his very being gave rise to Naoe's pain...
He was powerless.
Even so...

"If I don't have you... I cannot live on." Saying this, the man kissed the source of his suffering. "This failure who suffered because of you, regardless of everything I want to make you understand..."

"...!"

Takaya shut his eyes tightly, he desperately push against the chest that was pressing down on him.

"Make you understand me, let me embed inside your body, engrave inside you..."

"Naoe...!"

"Just I alone... do not receive anyone else..."

"..."

"Among all the people who have lost to you, I am the most deserving of pity..."

I was hoping that you would say this to me.
Regardless of how painful it is, I will bear it for your sake. Even if this bared body were to vomit blood, no matter how disgusting a travesty is exposed, no matter how many crimes are committed, no matter how much condemnation and ridicule I have to suffer from the people, it is of no importance. As long as you can issue your radiance. As long as that intense brilliance of yours can become even more dazzling.
Oh, how I hate you, how I desire you.
How I love you...

You definitely don't love me...

Even so, it is fine.
There is no reciprocation in this love. You certainly will not turn around and embrace me right.
Even so, it is fine. It will be good enough for you to just pay heed to your glory, then flaunt it before me. To offset the suffering of those who had unknowingly sacrificed themselves for the sake of your brilliance, as long as you continue to look afar to the other side with that beautifully piercing expression in your eyes, it will be good enough.

You only belong to me, beautiful 'Amadeus'...

To be able to embrace that lonely back of yours, I can only wager on this meager existence of mine and pursue you continuously...

Takaya's pure eyes looked up at Naoe as though they were concentrating their attention on him.
Naoe caressed that face affectionately.
En route down the journey through this life of his, he had identified the person who was significant to his existence, even though he despaired, he could only proceed onwards to his destiny.

If I had not met you, I would most probably be able to smoothly continue with life.
But then I would have never taken note of this existence who stirred up my emotions in this way as a result of desire.

In a constrained voice, he poured everything out as if he wanted to carve them onto his soul.

"I only love you, with the same level of intensity as this piece of hatred."

"Naoe..."

"Whichever it is, all of them are not lies."

The pupils of my eyes that have been punctured with the blade of passion, can only see you...

Takaya held his breath, looking up at Naoe's body hovering over him.
Naoe wanted to carry on with his actions, and Takaya's refusing hands that pushed against the man's chest were promptly pinned down on the gravel.
The man bent Takaya's knee, holding down his thighs as he spread them wide apart.

"Someone... might pass by..."

"It doesn't matter if we are seen."

"--It's shameful..."

"This sort of body posture?"

A snowflake flew onto his neck, melting into a bead of water that streamed down. Following that, tears slid down his cheek. The man's lips stubbornly chased after Takaya's evasive lips.

"If we don't return... Miya and the others... will find it strange..."

"Don't say out anyone's name other than mine."

"...Nnnh..."

His waist shook violently all of a sudden. The beast's wild eyes stared desperately at the head of the man who was sucking on the erect object between his groin. Because of the overly ingenious skill of the man's tongue, the impulse to yell out madly invaded the beast. Using all of his strength to refrain from doing so, the beast clasped the man's head, his fingertips pinched into his shoulders, the skin was lacerated, blood flowed out. The man grabbed his hand, forcefully leading him to his own manhood.

"...Ah...!"

"See. I want to be touched by you like this as well."

Touching the extremely genuine desire of that man, Takaya could not help but feel afraid and shook his head wanting to move his hand away. The man's breathing gradually became disordered as Takaya's fingers caressed him.

"Just like how you usually do it by yourself, it's fine for you do it lecherously."

"No...."

"See. There's a response in this way. Again... look... be more intense!"

"No...!"

A licentious smile appeared on the man's avaricious lips. "You... want this right? In your mouth, or in... the hole below?"

"I'll kill you! I want to kill you!"

"I will allow you to kill me."

"...Naoe...!"

A melancholy look momentarily appeared on the man's face. The startled beast widened his eyes that were wet with tears.

"--Ah..."

"..."

The beast stiffened his body in dread. The man closed his eyes as he breathed deeply, his fingers were moistened by the liquid splattered on the beast's abdomen.

"Let you... kill me..."

"Naoe..."

"Tonight... please kill me..."

Making the beast suck on his moist fingertips, the man looked back at him with teary eyes.

"Can I... enter you?"

Takaya looked up at Naoe firmly. Reclined on the white yukata that had been spread out, the naked tiger hatefully asked in reply to the man's prudent entreaty.

"Do you want to embrace me in this sort of place..."

The man painfully nodded.
The beast quietly gazed at the other's tears, then calmly closed his eyes.

"Violate me then-- Just don't freeze to death..."

The ice-cold lips overlapped, their limbs intertwined, the man and wild beast fused into one body of flesh. The sharp fingertips carved fresh marks on the back that was full of scars. Tears overflowed just like the shattering of glass, moans broke through the curtain of night.
The heated tongues, red like a scarlet rose, unknowingly melted with each other into blood.
The pure white snowflakes that quietly danced in the air,
Would finally change into a fierce snowstorm that would raid these two bodies.
Until they were exhausted in the snowstorm, until they freeze to death.

"What type of love is this...!"

The sound of whimpering leaked out of the beast's mouth, before it could reach the man's ears it disappeared into the snowstorm. The lips hissing in pleasure froze. Until the moment where absolute zero stops the heart completely...

Although tenderness and warmth were sought after, they still could not be obtained.
Since this was the case - ah, the people who mutually hurt one another.
In the icy crystal of darkness, regard the misery that mangled the body as requital,
Let us stay in this brief fantasy for now shall we...

この夜に、翼を track 10 夢よりも近く

(car stops)

Naoe: Takaya-san. We have arrived. Takaya-san. Takaya-san.

Takaya: (wakes up in a start)

Naoe: Are you awake? We have arrived.

Takaya: Naoe?

Naoe: Takaya-san. What's wrong? Your eyelashes are wet.

Takaya: ...

Naoe: Were you crying?

Takaya: I...

Naoe: Did you have a frightening dream?

Takaya: Dream?

Naoe: What's the matter? (smiles lightly) I find that you look a little strange.

Takaya: Where is this place?

Naoe: Odawara.

Takaya: Odawara? Why?

Naoe: Why... You said you wanted to come here. You wanted me to take you to Odawara after finishing our meal. What's the matter? Still dazed from sleep that you forgot about it?

Takaya: Ah... ah.

Naoe: The sea breeze is really soothing. Shall we get down from the car?

Takaya: Mmm.

(They get out of the car. Sound of waves, a car drives past. They come to the shore.)

Naoe: The night sea is really frightening.

Takaya: Eh?

Naoe: Many people have said so. Gazing at the sea from the dark shore, you can easily feel as if you are about to be swept away by the waves. Don't you think so?

Takaya: I...

Naoe: I like the night sea. It can surprisingly calm a person's mood. The sound of the great waves that you hear in the darkness, perhaps they have an effect that can calm the spirit. As though one has been enfolded, one can feel at peace. Takaya-san?

Takaya: Is this reality?

Naoe: Reality?

Takaya: Am I truly abiding in reality at this moment?

Naoe: What's the matter? Since just now...

Takaya: I feel really uneasy. You are here.

Naoe: Are you feeling uneasy because I am here?

Takaya: It's not that.

(Waves)

Naoe: What are you afraid of?

Takaya: Afraid... I'm not.

Naoe: I am here. Right here, constantly thinking of you.

Takaya: Thinking of my perfect self are you? You're too foolish.

Naoe: Foolish?

Takaya: Want me to be frank with you? Naoe. In reality, you are only thinking of me for your own sake. You can continue to retain this piece of love for such a long period of time despite not getting the slightest bit of reciprocation, this is simply because you consider this affection as an escape.

Naoe: An escape?

Takaya: That's right. What is all this talk of loser and winner, at the end of it you merely want to escape from reality. There is no life with your yearning. Within your turbid and brimming calculations, your yearning cannot be accepted in this system deemed as real life. The so-called ideal is but a fantasy. Isn't that right?

Naoe: Takaya-san.

Takaya: Your thinking of me, it's completely for your own sake. You are simply supporting yourself with that piece of emotion.

Naoe: Yes, it is as you say. I am supporting my own spirit with this piece of emotion. By constantly thinking of you, I can then endure the life of a person.

Takaya: A person like you can't be trusted.

Naoe: Takaya-san.

Takaya: That's right. In the end, you're only interested in yourself. Up to the very last, you're still only doing this for yourself. If this is for your own sake, it shouldn't matter even if the partner that you long for isn't me right?

Naoe: Has your unease reached the stage where you cannot help but have doubts?

Takaya: Unease?

Naoe: Doubting others in that way, showing off your power to others, setting up several layers of defenses, sometimes you will even come so close to cruelty in your suspicion of another, behaving coldly to other people and refusing to understand. The more you turn your back towards others, the more you wish in your heart that someone will pursue you. Just like a child.

Takaya: It's not that.

Naoe: Other than myself, there is no other person capable of understanding you.

Takaya: You're too arrogant.

Naoe: The one who forcefully made me arrogant is you.

Takaya: I don't want to listen to your confession anymore.

Naoe: Indeed. That sort of thing has not the slightest bit of significance. Foolish, hollow, unsightly, without any worth. Of no use at all.

Takaya: Enough.

Naoe: Excessively greedy, completely incapable of being a spiritual expert or a businessman, neither am I good enough to create another legend. Excessively timid, never daring to step into a church and neither did I realize that I had become a subject of ridicule. In order to retain the property that I barely have, I wasted all of my energy almost as though I wanted to die. (laughs softly) That is how I think of you.

Takaya: Didn't I say that I've heard enough?

Naoe: You are truly pitiful. Forced to listen to another's confession that you yourself do not want to hear. Before you are exposed by others, you are not even capable of a confession.

Takaya: I don't wish to confess anything.

Naoe: In that case... let me unmask you. Make you naked, releasing out the thing that you desperately wish to spit out. If it is painful, then allow me to liberate you. If you do this, it will make you feel comfortable.

Takaya: I don't want to be treated in that way.

Naoe: My attachment to you, is simply like self masturbation. I have mentioned this once to you before. You are someone who cannot even do this one thing, thus I will do it for you.

Takaya: Naoe.

Naoe: Until you are liberated.

(Waves)

Naoe: The Jews will not forsake Jesus again. I love you.

Takaya: Your love can't be trusted.

Naoe: You are... despising me. But even if you are, it cannot be helped. Because this man is probably the type of person that you disdain the most.

Takaya: Are you referring to yourself?

Naoe: Compared with other people, I only have a worthless, vulgar conceit. I cannot love a peer who is the same as myself. Regarding myself as the centerpiece of the world, thinking that one day I will make the other people kneel before me.

Takaya: You're too foolish.

Naoe: That's right. I am not capable of seeing the paradise that you seek.

Takaya: That so-called paradise doesn't exist anywhere.

Naoe: That is why you suffer.

Takaya: That so-called ideal, even if I have it, it'll only increase the pain.

Naoe: But even so, you still pursue it.

Takaya: That is what you selfishly believe to be so.

Naoe: You are the truth.

Takaya: I'm not Jesus. I'm not that sort of mighty person.

Naoe: Jesus was not some mighty person. He was simply a man who pursued an ideal that was impossible to achieve and died.

Takaya: Naoe.

Naoe: That man, will recover once again tonight. You are the truth.

Takaya: Even if the people were to throw rocks in contempt?

Naoe: Even so, you are still the truth.

Takaya: Even if I am this powerless?

Naoe: Only you are the truth.

Takaya: Everyone has abandoned me.

Naoe: If you have been abandoned, then please become someone who belongs to me.

Takaya: Belong... to you?

Naoe: Yes. Your person that only belongs to me.

Takaya: The only thing I can give you are the bones of my body. That is definitely not what you love about me.

Naoe: It's fine even if it is your bones. The bones that you become when you die, only I can love them.

Takaya: You'll obviously throw me away.

Naoe: I will not abandon you.

Takaya: That's just lip service.

Naoe: This is not a lie.

Takaya: It sounds just like a lie.

Naoe: My promise... will never die.

Takaya: Naoe.

Naoe: Your suffering, only now do I truly understand it. I am the only one capable of curing you. It does not matter how much you doubt me. If you will constantly doubt me, then I will constantly convey it. If you will forever doubt me, then I will forever convey it to you. You are the truth.

Takaya: Let me feel it a little more.

Naoe: Takaya-san.

Takaya: Your wings. I want to feel them a little more.

Naoe: I am around you. Beside you.

Takaya: (laughs softly) You're like a mother bird.

Naoe: Indeed.

Takaya: How warm... I still wish to continue to fly.

Naoe: To that night sky.

Takaya: To paradise.

Naoe: I love you. I love you so. Tonight Christ will recover. Even though we lost to reality and died, we will still be resurrected. Even if we stumble along the way, no matter how many times it takes, we will be resurrected once again, advancing towards the heavens.

Takaya: We are the truth.

Naoe: Yes. You are the truth.

Takaya: Spread out your wings. .......Just a little more.

Book 14 Chapter 13 死者は還らない

From Chinese translations by Hinako.

Draft: Version 1 - final
Notes: 茅崎市 Chigasaki-shi
PS: do not distribute this without my permission

There was no one in the room when he woke up.
He could not tell how bright it was outside, probably because the light was kept out by the curtains. Was it still night? Or was dawn approaching? A pitch black darkness, he could not even see the clock.

Takaya could not comprehend the current state of his body. It seemed like he had slept for a very long time. Once he was alert, he noticed that he was wearing bathing robes, both his hands had been bound in handcuffs. He felt like the handcuffs had been taken off at one point, had that been a dream?

"What... on earth happened..."

His head felt incredibly heavy.
What was this strange, lucid feeling of having been touched lingering on his body? As though his entire torso had been kissed..., and those lips. Takaya vaguely remembered. Someone had kissed him last night. It had been a profound, flowing kiss. The sort of intense kiss that one would never forget after one kiss...

Naoe...?

Impossible. Naoe was not here. However, it was very similar. It was his kiss. Takaya thought back carefully, he almost could not restrain himself from jumping up. But he could not get up as his wrists had been bound with the handcuffs.

It was... Kaizaki...

Once he figured this out, he remembered the entire conversation between Kaizaki and himself the previous night. Kaizaki was the one who had kissed Takaya deeply. Not Naoe... but...

"..."

Takaya felt a chill run down his back. He recalled Kaizaki's words one after another. Only Naoe should know this, keywords that belonged exclusively to their communion, yet they had rolled out of Kaizaki's mouth in succession. Indeed, the words that the current Naoe could not convey to him at all, Takaya had now heard them from Kaizaki instead.
As though he just had a conversation with Naoe himself. It seemed as though Naoe was not 'Naoe', but Kaizaki was 'Naoe'.

What on earth... is going on...

Takaya felt a whiff of cold air, his body tightened. He was scared.

That man... who is he really?

He could not understand it. However the words that he had spoken, their meaning and cadence, all of it had made him feel extremely comfortable. There had been a response regardless of what he had said, hadn't that made him feel satisfied, that ability to grasp that sort of dialog which only someone with the same perspective as his own would be able to understand? Didn't he feel that this was something that he had been searching for?

I feel this way...

This was an emotion that he had forgotten not so long ago. It was not something that could be clearly illustrated using reason. Indeed, this was the very feeling that he would always have whenever he conversed with Naoe back then. It could also be considered as a particular sense of unity. This affection was what the current Naoe, who had lost his interest in Takaya, was completely incapable of conveying to Takaya. On the other hand, Kaizaki had this specific sentiment.

I'm scared...

Had he changed? When did this start? What happened exactly? The object that Naoe could not give him now, yet always lavished it upon him as much as he could previously, that 'conversation that only the two of them would be able to understand'... That man possessed this very object in spite of everything.
Who on earth was Kaizaki?

--Takaya-san...

Kaizaki's voice had called him in this way last night. Its presence firmly remained in the depths of his ears. It was not an illusionary sound. It was Kaizaki's voice.

I don't understand.

Takaya closed his eyes tightly. He could not understand what had happened.

Naoe...!

He wanted to see Naoe urgently. He was in agony because of his unease. What should he do? He felt a strong need for certainty. If he disregarded this, he might even lose sense of his own footing. He felt a dangerous foreboding of the foundations of his own existence collapsing together with the world from beneath his feet.

Becoming someone that isn't you...

This was a future that ought not to exist. What happened?
Could it be that the day where Naoe Nobutsuna would become someone unworthy and unneccesary was fast approaching? Could another individual, more capable of being closer to Takaya than Naoe, possibly emerge - someone who could make Takaya thoroughly feel that he needed him? But the current Naoe was no longer like the previous Naoe. There was already such an immense rift between them.

"I... don't get it...!"

Perhaps this would still be acceptable. Because it was Naoe himself who willingly wanted to be bound. He freely loved him, then ceased to be faithful at his own discretion, abandoned him. He was to think nothing of such a person. It would not matter even if he did not have him. It should be this way.
But...

I will die if you abandon me...

It should be this way.
However, even if Naoe leaves him, what if there was another person capable of saving him with the same intensity?

It's impossible for someone like that to exist.

However the fact was that there was another individual besides Naoe who could fulfill this hungry feeling. He was extremely similar to the previous Naoe, but he was not the man that he [Naoe] was previously...

--If this is for my own sake, even if the partner that you long for isn't myself, it shouldn't matter right...?

It would be fine even if it wasn't Naoe, that was how he thought wasn't it? As long as he could be furnished with those words and warmth... As long as those actions could be shown to him, that smile, that expression in his eyes and that intense speech.

That's not true...!

He alone possessed these things. That was why he needed Naoe. He was someone unique. The current Naoe was not Naoe. Even though his external appearance was identical, he was not Naoe.

A fake...?

Impossible. However by thinking in this way he could embrace hope, he would no longer suffer injury.

No longer suffer injury?

Was this for the sake of protecting his body? Takaya felt a severe dislike of himself. But it was impossible for him to be a fake. It was not possible for this issue to be true. If this was really the case, then where was the real him? ...Impossible.

It's simply a delusion.

Takaya could not forgive himself for thinking in this manner. Was he once again thinking of escaping reality in this way? Always evading, allowing himself to be forced into a hopeless situation, crying out as he could not solve anything, was he exposing that ghastly appearance of his? Takaya felt a severe burst of pain at his temples, he pressed against his head.

Kaizaki---...

His bearing and actions were extremely similar to Naoe's. He had an exceptionally similar way of speaking. What is that man? How was he capable of passing through the breadth of his mind, invading his innermost being? Why was he so bothered about him? His head hurt. He would go mad if this continued.

"Na...oe...!"

At this moment, an unexpected clamor came from the other side of the room.
Takaya's entire body jumped all of a sudden like a wounded beast, he faced the direction in which the noise originated. The door on the other side of the room flung open, a man attired in Western-styled suit fell onto the floor. His hands had been bound together with rope, losing their freedom of movement.
Then the door closed, the sound of locking came from the outside. The Western-clad man who had been thrown in was around 40 years of age. The man had been unconscious, but owing to the impact from being thrown to the floor he had awoken.

"Nnnh... nnnh..."

Sakaki tossed his head back, looking the predicament he was in.

"Those brats... what on earth..."

He wanted to undo the ropes, however it was too firmly bound, he could not loosen it. Then Sakaki took notice of Takaya on the bed. Of course, Takaya did not know who Sakaki was.

"You... are..."

Sakaki looked at Takaya in alarm, feeling that he had seen this young man from somewhere, after a while he remembered the photograph, and exclaimed 'Ah'.

"Ougi... Takaya...! How can that be!"

Takaya was startled. "How do you know my name?"

"There's no mistake. Why? Why are you in this place?"

"Who are you?"

Sakaki managed with difficulty to prop up his upper body, he faced Takaya.

"I am Sakaki from the special investigation department of the National Security committee. You are Ougi Takaya right. You're an important witness to the events of Strange Area Designated #36, I've a lot of things to ask you."

A special investigator...

Hearing Sakaki's words, Takaya recalled what Ayako had said about 'being saddled with a troublesome individual'. He had heard that they were in the process of investigating the series of happenings that were related to Yami Sengoku, considering Takaya and the others as important witnesses and thus were trying to locate their whereabouts.

Do you want a testimony?

"Why are you here? What's going on? Was it the people of Kyoutake real estate who brought me here? So you're really working with them."

Seeing Sakaki's enthusiasm increase and his torrential questioning, Takaya frowned.
"Someone working with them wouldn't have any reason to be imprisoned here in this way right?"

"Eh..."

Takaya's hands had been chained in handcuffs.
"If you want a testimony, fine. But first you should take a look at the present situation you've gotten yourself into. You were also captured by the Satomi and brought here right?"

"Satomi...? What is that?"

"You've seen Kaizaki right? They are the guys from Kyoutake real estate who want to seize Enoshima."

"What did you say?" Sakaki's eyes grew even wider. "What do you mean by seize? Are they related to city councilor Gotou's death? What about that dream of the Enma Daio by the residents?"

"..."

Takaya hesitated, and mulled over whether to keep silent or tell him the truth of the matter, however silence was apparently not going to work on this investigator who seemed fairly stubborn. Takaya sighed and said.

"City councilor Gotou was killed by the Satomi by jusatsu. This served as a warning to the residents who are dependent on Enoshima and wouldn't leave, cautioning them that if they oppose this project they will become an eyesore to the Satomi."

"Jusatsu...! How can there be such a preposterous thing...!"

"If you don't believe me then forget it." Takaya uttered firmly. "In any case, there isn't an existing law that punishes those who implement jusatsu. No matter how much authority you hold, you people are powerless when it comes to those who cannot be punished by law. There's no need for you to get involved in this muddy situation and lose your life right? Don't investigate this matter any further."

"...!"

What was this manner of speaking that Takaya used when conversing with an adult much older than he was? It made one feel that this was not the behavior of a minor. Moreover, his tone was haughty, it displeased Sakaki.

"Who are you really? We know that you were involved in the string of events that occurred in Matsumoto, Sendai, Nikko, Hiroshima and others. Curses, riding on the back of a dragon and so forth, they're nothing but bullshit. Who are you? Tell me everything like a good boy."

"Even if I told you, you wouldn't believe it right?" Takaya laughed. Then he restored the serious expression on his face once again. "I don't know what those Satomi guys intend to do to you, but it seems like this room's lock can only be opened from the outside. Why don't you just give it up and lie down over there."

"What is this Satomi that you speak of? Why have you been imprisoned in this place?"

Sakaki's unfeeling external appearance was completely contrary to his personality, it seemed like he was a rather long-winded and obstinate man. Like a tortoise, once he gripped onto something he would continue to hold onto it tenaciously. Takaya believed the Satomi had captured a truly bothersome individual, he closed his eyes finding him tedious.

"Hey, I asked you a question. Answer."

"..."

"The reason you don't answer, isn't it because you're actually the mastermind?"

This man was honestly so desperate to use striking words to affect him. Takaya stared at Sakaki fiercely. Sakaki was somewhat overwhelmed by Takaya's glare, he grew silent.

"...More importantly, getting out of here should take precedence over those issues right? If Enoshima isn't recovered from the clutches of the Satomi, the consequences would be terrible."

"Terrible?"

"Enoshima may turn into a group of islands no longer habitable to man."

For the moment, regardless of whether the dead could really return, he could not just lay idle and disregard it since the Satomi had the backing of the Oda. The situation would intensify.
Furthermore, if he allowed things to continue in this way, sooner or later he would be delivered into the hands of the Oda.

"If we don't find a way to get out of here..."

But what could he do? He could not sever the handcuffs and break down the room door as he could not employ his powers. Even if he wanted to utilize a wave of thought and direct it outwards to request for help, due to the installation of some kind of kekkai he could not establish contact with the outside.
Naoe and the others were probably searching for him desperately. If only he could let them know that he was here...

"...!"

At this very moment. Takaya's sixth sense caught the breath of a person. He felt someone outside calling him, Takaya exclaimed 'Ah' as he widened his eyes.

"Naoe?"

"?"

In that moment, Sakaki turned his head towards the door as well. There was the sound of the main entrance being forced open, followed by the patter of running footsteps that drew close and then the cries of the guards. Someone ran over, opened the locks to the room, and roughly opened the door.

"Kagetora-sama!"

"Naoe...!"

Kotarou appeared in the doorway. He bolted to the side of the bed at once, fetching out a key attached to a small keyring from his pocket, Takaya's hands were finally freed after the handcuffs were efficiently unfastened. Takaya suddenly embraced Kotarou's neck deeply, startling Kotarou.

"Kagetora-sama...!"

"..."

Takaya grabbed onto Kotarou firmly, burying his face into the space between Kotarou's neck.

"...Kagetora-sama..."

Takaya shook abruptly, widening his eyes. For a split second he had detected a scent from Kotarou's neck that was clearly not Naoe's. Takaya creased his brows and squinted, after a moment of silence he mumbled lowly beside Kotarou's ear.

"What have you been doing?"

Kotarou was alarmed, he looked at Takaya. Takaya lowered his voice, pressing his lips against his ear and whispered.

"You came so late..."

"..."

Kotarou placed both of his hands, which were trembling slightly, on Takaya's shoulders. Then strongly tore Takaya away from him in one breath.

"Are you hurt?"

Takaya looked at Kotarou as he came back to his senses. "...No."

"My deepest apologies. I made a mistake. At that time, if I had been able to immediately give chase..."

"How did you know I was here?"

"I instructed my subordinates to investigate the Kyoutake-owned apartments that Kaizaki and the others frequented. After that, I received this..." Kotarou took out a silver key and a card about the size of a business card, he showed it to Takaya. "I was told someone handed it to the front desk of the hotel this morning."

"Key..."

It was the key to this apartment. The address of Chigasaki city had been written on the card.

"It is the address to this place. Someone informed us that you have been imprisoned in this place, together with this room's key."

Takaya and the others usually communicated with each other by car phones and pagers, but whenever they could not come into contact in any way, the standard measure was to leave a message at the hotel they were lodged at. In order to immediately know of any news on Takaya, Kotarou had given the hotel receptionist the telephone number of his car, requesting the clerk to call him the moment there was any information.

"There was also this."

The object that Kotarou took out was Koubou Daishi's dokkosho. This was really strange. The dokkosho had always been in this room until just now. Had someone taken it out? Who was the one who had went through all this trouble just to help Takaya? If it was a subordinate of the Satomi, this would be an act of betrayal.

"Kagetora-sama...?"

Takaya's eyes had been fixed on the card all this while.

"Is something the matter?"

"This handwriting..."

Takaya stiffly observed the writing style of the handwritten address. It was a rather regular style of writing. The strokes were extremely natural. The size was suitably moderate and the graceful form of the characters...

"I've seen this before."

"What?"

"This... isn't it similar?"

To your handwriting.
He was about to voice out these words, however Takaya bit them back. It was substituted with eyes that stared relentlessly at Kotarou.

"Do you know who gave this to the front desk? What was his name, what sort of person was he..."

"Apparently the other never stated his name. I heard he was sent there by request. The receptionist said it was a medium-sized man, around 30 years of age, wearing a half-length overcoat."

"..."

Takaya widened his eyes in astonishment. The key to the handcuffs that he had seen last night was indeed still here. It should be in Kaizaki's possession. After Yoshiyori and the others went out, Kaizaki and himself had been the only ones left in this apartment.

I'm thinking too much...

Kaizaki was a subordinate of the Satomi. There was no reason for him to specially aid him in this way. Furthermore that person was aware of the hotel Takaya and the others were staying at, even knowing of the way in which they contacted each other.

But this handwriting...

Was extremely similar to Naoe's. Takaya had not been together with Naoe for so long for nothing. He had long grown accustomed to Naoe's handwriting. He had always envied Naoe's ability to write in such a regular and proper typeface that he himself could never rival.

What if the person who had written this was Kaizaki...?
However he had no reason to help him.

But...

"Kagetora-sama." Kotarou urged with an anxious intonation. "Let us leave quickly. Enoshima has been occupied by the Satomi."

"What?"

"The residents have been forced to shift out of the island. The entrance to the island has been sealed off by the Satomi, there is no way of entering, furthermore the mermaids have appeared in the sea."

"Mermaids?"

"Yes. Apparently they are the 'Yachou' of the Satomi. They will destroy any vessel that comes close to the periphery of the territorial waters of Enoshima, no one can approach via the sea."

Takaya was flabbergasted. The Satomi were indeed aiming to start the 'Method of Connecting to Hell'. Takaya could not use his powers in his current physical state.

"Kaizaki that damn brat, doing this all of a sudden..."

"Is something wrong? Kagetora-sama."

"Anyway, let us first go to Enoshima."

Even if he could not use his powers, he had to think of a way to stop the Satomi. Not to mention that if he wanted to bury the vajra into the cave, he had to go to Enoshima.

What happened to Miura Yoshimoto?

"What mysterious subject are both of you discussing over there! Do you intend to escape by yourselves!"

Takaya turned towards Sakaki, exposing a frustrated expression. If they let him tag along he would definitely be annoying to no end, however they could not just ignore him and cast him aside like this either. Takaya took the short knife from Kotarou's hand and threw it to the floor.

"If you're skilled enough, you should be able to cut the ropes. Do your best."

"Damn... you...!"

Takaya changed into his own clothes, after gesturing to Kotarou by nodding his head, he walked out of the room. Casting his eyes aside, gnashing his teeth in anger, Sakaki cried out 'hateful little rascal' in discontent. Takaya and Kotarou disappeared to the other side of the doorway.

***

Driving rapidly from Chigasaki, Takaya and Kotarou reached the seacoast of Katase. The shops by the sea would usually become incomparably idle in winter unlike in summer where they would be bustling with activity due to tourists bathing in the sea.
However this place was presently swarmed with journalists from the news media and others, anxiously gazing afar at Enoshima.
The entrance to the Enoshima causeway had been completely blockaded, with the policemen and defense guards stationed there to warn the public. They heard that the police and City Hall had justified this blockade to the members of the news media with the reason that 'the seismic activity at the geological fault line near Enoshima had become serious, hence there was a danger of a large scale bulge or cave-in occurring, therefore it has been sealed off'.

"We really can't get close with this situation."

Takaya stood on the beach staring at Enoshima on the other side of the bridge. "Furthermore, they have set up a kekkai. In this way, we have no means of sending in a gohou douji."

"We have to think of a way to infiltrate the area."

"Don't tell me we have to fly in from the sky?"

Takaya showed a somewhat pessimistic expression. Occasionally, something would show its face on the surface of the sea. It was a mermaid. Reportedly, they were the 'Yachou' of the Satomi... They appeared to have the intention of hindering any intruders coming via the sea. During a time of emergency, it would be feasible to use incantations to disperse the mermaids and enter the islands, but what was unfortunate at this moment was that Takaya's body could not use the power of spells. He had to think of other tactics.

"..."

Takaya pondered as he stood in the blustery sea wind. Kotarou, standing to one side, gazed at him stiffly.

"Kagetora-sama." Kotarou called him in this way with an ineffably strange look, Takaya turned his head questioningly. "If by any chance the Night Devil Path is truly capable of bringing back the dead from the underworld..."

"What?"

"If the effected 'Method of Connecting to Hell' is capable of summoning the dead, Kagetora-sama, you..."

Takaya revealed a guarded expression. "What are you trying to say? Naoe."

Kotarou looked slightly hesitant, however he made up his mind to voice it out. "Do you not have someone you wish to call back? If the dead could really return-..."

Upon saying this, Kotarou suddenly came back to his senses. What was he trying to say just now? Did he want to say that this was the opportunity to call Naoe back? Did he want to say that if Takaya wanted to call Naoe back, he could just let the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' be, ignore the implementation of the sorcery? Was he trying to suggest allowing the Night Devil Path to make such a connection?

Takaya widened both his eyes, he looked at Kotarou, who was trembling a little.

"What do you mean... by that..."

"Kagetora-sama..."

"...Want to call someone back... that..."

Kotarou immediately realized his mistake. A glint of fear began to simmer in Takaya's eyes. What Kotarou had said made him feel as though a certain object, buried in one part of the depths of his heart, was about to be dug up, a feeling of danger.

"...Lost... an important..."

"Kagetora-sama, what I said just now..."

"What on earth are you trying to say? If there was such a person then what do you expect me to do..."

"I..., but you..."

"...Impossible..." Takaya shook his head, as though he wanted to negate himself, and said. "It's impossible for a dead person to return. Once they're purified by exorcism that's the end... Death is a one-way street. This act of returning from the other world... can't be done... is impossible to achieve!"

Takaya yelled, clenching his fists.

"Granted, we can send people to another world, but this matter of returning from another world, people are absolutely... incapable of this. It's impossible! Even for the gods, this is one thing that can't be done!"

"..."

"That is what 'death' is, right?"

Takaya's shoulders shivered fiercely. He stared at him with all the strength of his perception, Kotarou could not budge. Takaya lowered his line of sight and gritted his teeth in pain.

He must not compel him. It was too dangerous. Kotarou thought in this way. However Kotarou could not comprehend his reason for bringing up this subject. He obviously knew that this matter would certainly incite panic in Takaya.

Allowing the dead to return in order to turn them into their military strength. This ploy must not be ignored. Of course, this was not a question of ethics but rather an issue of strategy. Obviously, they could not let the enemy move as they please, yet why had he asked Takaya this question?

Was I planning to let Naoe return to this world?

Too foolish. Kotarou dispelled this thought. If that was the case, didn't it appear as though he had indeed fallen in love with Takaya?

Was I thinking that it would be acceptable to merely watch the implementation of the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' if it was for the sake of allowing Saburo-dono to call Naoe back...

It could not be acceptable. He had never been flustered by matters not pertaining to combat. He only had to consider the advantages and disadvantages of a fight, this was all the data he needed for decision-making. It should be this way...

What is the matter with me...

Kotarou could not understand himself.

But...

If it was really possible to call Naoe back from the other world...
The issue of Takaya's heart not having any recollection of Naoe's death. He believed that Naoe was here. Therefore, even if Naoe could really be brought back from the other world, because Naoe was not dead to Takaya, he could not come to a decision.

What is the best thing to do...

Kotarou was at a loss. Wasn't he the only one capable of deciding? If this was the only chance. If this was the only chance of calling Naoe back.

No, even if it was possible, he could not let Naoe return to Takaya's side. If that happens, he would no longer be 'Naoe'. He would not be able to continue as Takaya's aide. The plan to make him return to the Hojo family would then fail.
But Takaya needed the real 'Naoe' more than anyone else. If Takaya were normal, he would definitely hope for Naoe's return. Even if he stayed by his side as a counterfeit, he would only injure him unceasingly, he would only wear him down.

The expression in Takaya's eyes reappeared in his vision.

--Are you no longer interested in me...

If Takaya hoped for it, wasn't it only right that he should bring back that man from the other world no matter how much he had to sacrifice? If Takaya could not survive without that man, shouldn't he bring Naoe back for his sake?

I can't do that sort of thing...!

Kotarou clearly understood. He was plainly aware, why was he still so perplexed?

It should not be this way...!

The man who ought not have any emotions frowned, clenching his teeth painfully. Takaya took notice of Kotarou's manner, he asked earnestly.

"Why... did you ask about that?"

"..."

"You have something to say to me right! Tell me!"

"Saburo...!"

After blurting this out, Kotarou closed his mouth with an 'Ah!'. Takaya wrinkled his eyebrow slightly, he slanted his head and said.

"Naoe...?"

Kotarou was silent.
Takaya, with an unrelenting focus in his eyes, looked directly at Kotarou. An expression that wrapped around him closely as though he was coercing him.
Kotarou could not tolerate it, he cast his eyes away.

At that moment, a man's voice came between the two of them.

"Indeed. The dead cannot return from the other world."

"...!"

Kotarou turned around in shock. Takaya looked over as well.
There was a young man attired in a blue short coat standing there on the beach.

"Yagami..."

"It's good to see you safe. Kagetora-sama."

Yagami, the new leader of the 'Ken En' replied, revealing a faint smile, he briefly stared at Kotarou again, then faced Takaya.

"What were you talking about just now? Yagami."

"It has to do with the Night Devil Path. The channel that will be opened by the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' is not a path leading to the other world at all."

"! ...What did you say!"

"What is going on then?"

"The Night Devil Path that the Satomi want to open, is not for the sake of constructing a road for the dead to return from the other world-" Yagami said, his look was sharp. "Rather, it's an underground tunnel that can transport souls from a distant location."

Takaya's eyes widened. "Underground tunnel?"

"Yes. The object that the Satomi have named as the Night Devil Path, is a kind of underground tunnel. Of course there would be an opening on the ground surface leading to it as well."

"Where?"

"The Asama Grand Shrine at Fujinomiya-shi in the Shizuoka prefecture."

What followed after Yagami's words was the voice of a woman. Ayako and Nikaidou Reiko appeared before Takaya and the others. Ayako almost seemed like she wanted to lunge forward as she happily grabbed onto Takaya's hand.

"You're all right, that's great! Kagetora. I was so worried about you! I just received word from Kotarou, agreeing to meet in this place...!"

"What's going on with that situation you just mentioned? Fujinomiya's Asama Grand Shrine?"

"The nation of Hell is beneath Mt. Fuji, there was such a legend right? But the entrance to the Night Devil Path that the Satomi wish to open is located on Mt. Fuji. The Satomi are planning to draw the large army of the Oda from the entrance at Fuji to this place!"

"What...!" Takaya widened his eyes and asked in reply. "In that case the so-called Night Devil Path is not referring to a road that would lead to the other world, but a conduit to transport the Oda?"

"The region of Fujikawa in Fujinomiya-shi is the place where the border between the dominion of the Oda and the Takeda lies. At present time, conflicts often break out between the two armies in that area."

The Oda had plans to invade the Kanto region, they had been pouring their military strength into the confrontations with the Takeda, Takaya and the others were aware of this. However the Takeda's army at the Fujikawa defense line would not surrender so easily, the Oda had been incapable of overcoming this situation all along, for this reason the plot to capture the Kanto region was delayed and could not proceed smoothly, they were caught in a deadlock.

Hence, the Oda had designed another military strategy.
That is to not break through the Takeda's defense line from the front, a battle tactic of sending their armed forces straight into the Takeda's domain.
From Fujinomiya to Enoshima. Via this secret underground tunnel, the Oda would be able to avoid clashing with the Takeda's powerful army, they could send the troops of their own army into Sagami at one go. If they do not cross swords with the Takeda's military, they would not have to suffer heavy casualties from battle. If they could set up a stronghold at Enoshima, the large army of the Oda could then easily advance towards the central district, the invasion of the Kanto region would then have huge progress.

"With the Oda's military strength, by allying themselves with the Satomi they can easily capture the region of Sagami all the way until Bousou. This includes the central district. The Oda consider the Night Devil Path as a transport channel, it's possible that they will take advantage of the time when the Takeda is caught off-guard and launch a military assault from Sagami which is the Takeda's weak point."

"..."

Takaya and Kotarou listened with imposing expressions.

"So the Satomi wish to carry out the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' in order to transport the Oda's soldiers from Suruga. Not a road leading to the other world..."

"Yes." Yagami nodded clearly. "About a month ago, the Oda's army brought the Fujinomiya district under their control. The Asama Grand Shrine is currently the largest military front-line of the Oda."

"They want to send their soldiers to Enoshima from there right?"

"The 'Method of Connecting to Hell' will be implemented tonight at both Enoshima and Fujinomiya simultaneously."

Ayako anticipated Takaya's following question, and answered in advance.

"Nagahide has gone to Fujinomiya. He said to leave the situation over there to him. We have to stop the implementation of the curse on Enoshima. At Fujinomiya, even if we obstruct them this time, as long as it's still under the influence of the Oda, they'll be able to recover and carry it out regardless of how many times we hinder them. Therefore, we've to concentrate on Enoshima's fuuketsu. In order to prevent the execution of the curse, we have to seal the entrance of the fuuketsu."

Takaya's eyes were brimming with the will to fight, he looked disparagingly at Enoshima. They were a group of lush green islands that extended horizontally across the sea on the other side of the undulating waves.

"In order to carry out the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' the Satomi are also planning to exploit the power of Enoshima's Benzaiten."

Reiko uttered after Ayako had spoken. Takaya wrinkled his brows.

"Who are you?"

"I'm a special investigator, my name is Nikaidou."

Reiko replied firmly. Vouching for her, Ayako said.

"I told you yesterday evening right? She'll be providing us with her assistance. The ability of this person's soul can be trusted."

Reiko continued once more. "In order to borrow the power of Benzaiten, they need Benzaiten's yorishiro. Suga Natsuo-san was kidnapped yesterday."

"Kidnapped? Don't tell me she's...!"

"Exactly. They intend to use Natsuo-san as a living yorishiro." Ayako's expression grew solemn. "It won't be good if we don't save her as soon as possible. An ordinary person is incapable of bearing that kind of load, if she becomes Benzaiten's yorishiro, she'll die if it's not done properly."

"Then, we have to prevent the 'Method of Connecting to Hell'...!"

Takaya grew silent, he pondered over a countermeasure for dealing with the situation.
It was already dark. The curse would be carried out tonight, there was not much time left.

"I've understood the situation."

"Kagetora-sama."

"In order to stop the curse, we must infiltrate the islands no matter what. Let's draw up a battle plan. I'll take command from now on."

Ayako and Yagami nodded deeply. Takaya expression had changed to that of a calm and composed leader.

"Immediately gather information. We have to be sure of Suga-san's whereabouts. Yagami, mobilize the 'Ken En' for war, locate her within several hours. Go immediately."

"Understood!"

After Yagami responded, he turned and hurried towards the harbor. Takaya turned towards Ayako.

"Haruie, where did you get this information from? How is it that you even know of the Satomi's true..."

"Nagahide told me."

"Chiaki?"

Takaya exposed an expression of bewilderment. This was surprising. Chiaki should be in Yokohama conducting an investigation into other matters, such as thwarting the Takeda's transportation schemes. His tracks had been lost after fighting with Yamagata. How did he suddenly obtain information about the Satomi?

...Something is fishy.

Takaya could not refrain from feeling suspicious.

Kotarou quietly looked at Takaya in that manner.

--The dead will not return.

He felt relieved at this fact. Why?
Beneath that false mask of an expressionless face, Kotarou could not understand himself.

Book 14 Chapter 12 黄泉への入り口 Trans-summary

From Chinese translations by Hinako.

Draft: Version 1 - final
Notes:
PS: do not distribute this without my permission

- Enoshima is in complete chaos; the island's residents dreamt about the Enma Daio again; if they don't leave the island at once, the sentinels of Hell will capture them and they'd be forced to endure the sufferings of Hell together with the dead
- apparently the southern section of the cliff collapsed as according to what the Enma Daio stated, and an earthquake occurred several times; furthermore, they had seen Gotou in their dreams as well who told them to 'leave Enoshima at once otherwise they'd be killed like him'
- people are running helter-skelter screaming as though they've seen the sentinels, of course Ayako and Reiko can't see the 'ghosts'
- less than an hour later, the police and members of city hall arrive, what's startling is that even the Kyoutake real estate employees are present; they respond to the residents' pleas and transfer all of them to a temporary refuge; then the bridge leading to Enoshima is completely sealed and entry prohibited
- Ayako and Reiko are forced out of Enoshima as well; they stand on the coast of Katase as they ponder
- Ayako relates the plans of summoning the dead to Reiko; she also begins to tell Reiko about the truth of the situation: the possession of the staff of Kyoutake real estate by the members of the Satomi clan
- Yagami appears with information on what Chiaki has been up to

***

- early in the morning, Kaizaki headed to the Tatsumi mansion at Mt. Kamakura after being summoned by Yoshitaka; Yoshiyori had already set out to Fujinomiya
- Kaizaki had issued orders to implement a new dream to get the residents out of Enoshima and preparations were underway to execute the 'Method of Connecting to Hell'
- to carry out the curse, Yoshitaka was about to start fasting and had changed into white clothes; in order to carry out the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' the master curse executor had to fast for 12 hours or more to cleanse the body
- Yoshitaka plans to use Natsuo as a container for Benzaiten when the goddess descends and leaves it to Kaizaki to manage the situation
- Yoshitaka has complete trust in Kaizaki
- then Kaizaki is informed that a special investigator has come to speak with the chairman Tatsumi

***

"I am Sakaki, a special agent from the investigation department of the National Security Board."

Sakaki, seated on the large sofa in the guest room, displayed his ID card. Kaizaki was extremely calm. He took out a small card box from his breast pocket and elegantly handed his business card to Sakaki.

"I am Kaizaki. I was informed that you are here to see the chairman Tatsumi, unfortunately the chairman is not in his mansion today."

"That's strange." Sakaki immediately asked a question in reply with a deep sense of suspicion. "I heard from the company's staff that the chairman would be at his residence for the whole of today."

"I was not told of the chairman's schedule today therefore I cannot provide you with an answer. I heard that you are here to conduct an investigation?"

Kaizaki's expression hardly changed, he suddenly went straight to the topic.

"I assume it's related to the development plans for Enoshima our company has undertaken. There are rumors that Chairman Tatsumi bribed the legislative assembly of Fujizawa city so that the project would proceed smoothly. Due to this suspicion of bribery..., the police have been really appalling of late. Where exactly did they hear of this spurious matter? This sort of fabrications can't be so irresponsibly spoken of."

"You mean to say that there was no such act of bribery?"

"Definitely no such thing."

Kaizaki replied with an abundance of confidence. This man, who was more than ten years younger than Sakaki, weighed his words unusually well. There was not the slightest inconsistency in his speech to allow him an opportunity for probing questions.

This man...

Sakaki immediately realized it. He was not an opponent that could be beaten back with ordinary means. Compared with meeting Tatsumi himself, this man was not wholly enthusiastic and difficult to persuade, proving to be more troublesome.

"The city councilor Gotou died a sudden death a few days ago."

Sakaki raised the issue again, he stared straight at Kaizaki, exposing a suspicious expression with a hawk-like inquisition in his eyes as though he was confronting a suspect.

"Mr. Gotou was an individual who opposed the plans to develop Enoshima. We had certain questions about city councilor Gotou's sudden death thus reopened an investigation. As a result..."

Kaizaki's expression did not change at all.

"We suspect that Mr. Gotou was murdered."

"Are you suggesting that we killed Mr. Gotou?" As though he was avoiding Sakaki, Kaizaki squinted and continued to speak. "How interesting. Why would it be necessary for us to have city councilor Gotou dead? Even though we allowed city councilor Gotou the time he needed to understand this project, we believed that we would've acquired his consent in the end. Even if he were to disapprove until the very end, we would've continued to persuade him. We even chose to foster good faith in the residents of Enoshima and patiently convinced them without rest. With regards to the last point, you will understand it by simply inquiring the people at Enoshima."

Sakaki's mouth closed entirely, he regarded Kaizaki's calm expression.

"We are a firm. Preparing for this whole project is simply one of the businesses that we handle. Kyoutake real estate is indeed currently pouring its resources into this project to construct a resort bay, but it hasn't reached the extent of putting the entire company at stake. There is also no need for us to commit dangerous acts for this reason, much less do something like murder... Which company would carry out this sort of crime that would sweep the company's reputation to the floor?"

"So you're saying that you people have nothing to do with the sudden death of city councilor Gotou?"

"I heard that city councilor Gotou died of illness, isn't that so?"

"..."

Sakaki only remained silent. City councilor Gotou did suffer a sudden death, no matter how much he pondered, it was not because someone had set about to kill him.

Jusatsu...?

How could that be possible. Sakaki had denied it in this way. Was someone like him, who firmly disagreed with this sort of matter, now about to use it as a refute?

"Anyhow, if you still wish to speak with the chairman, you can make an appointment..." Kaizaki said, slowly crossing his legs. "However your suspicion of bribery won't get you anywhere, or rather please don't waste your energy. It would probably be more meaningful to carry out some other investigation."

"We will decide for ourselves if this is a waste of energy."

"Very well. But it's useless. If you want to know why, that is because we did not bribe anyone." Kaizaki stated once again with a staunch intonation full of sureness. "No matter how much you probe there will be no results. If you still have your doubts, please investigate until you're fully satisfied. But that will only make you regret having wasted your time."

"..."

Being disparaged to this extent, Sakaki, with his pride as a capable and well-experienced prosecutor, could no longer remain silent. ...However he felt extremely reluctant to say out what Reiko mentioned about curses, jusatsu and hypnosis. But Sakaki was besieged with resentment of Kaizaki, he could not help but mention it.

"The residents of Enoshima said that they were threatened by the Enma Daio..."

Hearing these words, Kaizaki revealed a reaction for the very first time. Sakaki did not let that escape his eyes.

"I heard about this matter. The Enma Daio of Hell appeared in the residents' dreams and said that the Enma wants to buy Enoshima, the dead will return via the caverns, turning this place into a part of Hell, for that reason all of the residents have to leave the island. Following that, witnesses to attacks by ghosts on the island have emerged ever since."

"..."

"We suspect that this may be some form of group hypnosis."

A question that did not actually stem from his own hypothesis unexpectedly incited a response in Kaizaki, Sasaki deliberately questioned him with a tone of voice that was full of malice, he leaned forward. However Kaizaki was no meek person to become frantic from this level of questioning.

"...A group hypnosis? You have mentioned something amusing yet again. Are you saying that we have an expert in hypnotism and whatnot amongst us?"

"Additionally, with regards to Mr. Gotou's sudden death. It was reported that starting about ten days before his death, the ten kings of Hell took turns to appear in his dreams. Mr. Gotou grew emaciated along with these dreams, finally becoming extremely weak and died..." Sakaki peered at Kaizaki's face from the bottom. "We suspect that..."

Kaizaki's expression did not change.

"This may or may not be a jusatsu."

"Jusatsu...? What is that?"

"Death as a result of having been cursed."

"Ju... satsu?" Kaizaki repeated the words over and over again, after revealing a somewhat confounded expression, he suddenly smiled. "This is truly a unique opinion. You can't be suggesting that city councilor Gotou was punctured by a long nail by someone and thus cursed to death?"

"I heard that the cave was sealed three days ago due to a rock slide."

"There was indeed an incident of collapse due to falling rocks. You can tell by one look at the site."

"But in reality the collapse due to falling rocks occurred the day after the cave was sealed right?"

Kaizaki's expression suddenly returned to a serious one.

"What do you mean by that?"

"Someone has already looked into it. In the first place, when the cave was sealed there was no such incident of falling rocks. You collaborated with City Hall and prohibited the entry of the public right?" Sakaki discussed with fervent emphasis. "The Enma said that the dead will return via the fuuketsu. I was told that the fuuketsu mentioned by the Enma is in that very cave. Don't tell me this has nothing to do with your sealing of the cave?"

Kaizaki looked back at Sakaki with a serious face. All that Sakaki had said were from what Reiko had acquired in her information-gathering and her deductions. Even though Sakaki had told himself that 'those sort of unrealistic matters were impossible' and was completely unconvinced, it unknowingly had a genuine tinge of truth when he voiced it out, he found it rather inconceivable.

Kaizaki solemnly gazed at Sakaki.

"You have truly uttered some astonishing words."

"...!"

"Jusatsu? Application of hypnosis? Although I've heard that the public are beginning to accept those sort of supernatural phenomena, I absolutely did not expect a national functionary to speak of this matter in such a serious and unrestrained manner, in addition to that, using it as grounds for suspicion."

The indignation in Kaizaki's expression changed into coldness.

"Unexpectedly using that sort of unrealistic matter to judge another as a criminal... I'm very disappointed. I have never liked the way in which the national authorities wielded their power, but in hearing these words, I have completely lost my trust in you people. There should be a limit to how much you take people for fools."

Kaizaki's face had become iron-like without any expression, he stood up.

"Please return."

"Wh..!"

"To be suspected of bribery with no substantial evidence is quite enough to make one feel displeased, much less having to listen to this preposterous matter all of a sudden. It's a waste of my time to listen to your words."

"Wait a minute! I haven't finished yet!" Sakaki stood up as well. "The daughter of the head of Enoshima's self-government went missing yesterday. From the inferences drawn from the scene, there's a possibility that she has been kidnapped."

"Are you suspecting us again?" Kaizaki faced Masaki with a contemptuous, icy expression in his eyes. "If you want to search the house, call your accomplices or the news media, search as much as you wish. However if you do not find anything, we will sue you for slander."

"...!"

"I still have matters to attend to, I take my leave here. From now on, it would be better for you to not use those sort of senseless words to waste other people's precious time. Please help yourself as you see fit."

After Kaizaki finished, he left the guest room. Sakaki stood there dully.
The other had despised him in the end. This was Sakaki's first encounter with this sort of matter. As a competent prosecutor this was really the first time he suffered trivial insults from another ever since his days as a novice.

What is the meaning of this...

Sakaki's fists trembled in humiliation. His gait was in complete disorder. He felt extremely discontent with his impertinence. Not to mention that he was someone who was originally opposed to the idea of curses, jusatsu and so on. He did not believe in that sort of thing himself. Kaizaki had in fact taken the words straight out of his mouth. Sakaki found it intolerable to have been admonished by Kaizaki to this extent. He felt humiliated. "This is all your fault." Sakaki was angry at Reiko.

"Damn... it---...!"

Sakaki's shaking fist slammed against the table.
Kaizaki, hearing the activity inside the room from the outside, smiled insidiously.

"What is it? Kaizaki-sama."

"Hmm...? Nothing..." Kaizaki smiled in delight. "Looks like everything is going smoothly..."

From the very beginning, Kaizaki had seen through Sakaki's nature. Sakaki's pride of being 'capable and well-experienced' was his failing. It seemed like he did not have any preconceived plan on how to provoke him. Kaizaki was several times smarter than Sakaki was. It was fairly simple to dodge questions regarding the jusatsu and the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' from someone who did not even believe in them. As for the bribery issue, he merely had to deny it as they had really committed no such act. The resulting events believed to be due to bribing of the legislative assembly of Fujizawa city, was in actuality the effect of a hypnosis. Regardless of how extensive Sakaki's investigation was, there would not be any evidence, and thus he could not cross-examine Kaizaki. Natsuo was not in this house. Therefore it was useless to search.

Kaizaki moved from the door of the room and turned away. At this moment, Masaki Tokishige came from another side of the corridor.

"Kaizaki-sama, I have reported about that investigator to Yoshitaka-sama. It would be inconvenient if he were to act in haste. Yoshitaka-sama instructed us to imprison him here until the curse is completed."

"You reported this to Yoshitaka-sama?" Kaizaki looked displeased. "I don't remember leaving the reporting to you when Yoshitaka-sama is in the process of fasting."

"This is to guard against any contingency."

"Even if we let that investigator go, no harm will be done. I feel that if we were to capture him it will lead to future troubles."

"This is Yoshitaka-sama's order."

"..."

Kaizaki pondered over something without displaying any expression on his face. He knew that Tokishige did not have complete trust in him. Then Kaizaki smiled lightly, and said.

"... Then do as you wish." Kaizaki took out the keys to the apartment from his pocket and handed them to Tokishige. "The prison facilities there are rather impeccable. Confine him in that place. I have to leave for Enoshima now. Bring the car over."

"Understood!"

Kaizaki put on his overcoat brought to him by his subordinate, wore his leather gloves, turned and headed to the front door cutting a fine figure as he walked away. Masaki watched him leave with a distrustful face.
