***

The rumor regarding the admission of a transfer student had reached the ears of the students from class 2B in the Hoom Room by morning.
It seemed like the rumor had already been made known to everyone via word of mouth before Akemi got a chance to publicize it. A new desk had been prepared near the back of the classroom, validating the authenticity of the news.

"I hear it's a male transfer student!"

"I wonder what he's like, I'm so excited!"

"I just saw him in the staff room!"

"Really~~~! What's he like? What's he like?"

Just for today, every single student was extremely alert in the early morning class, which would usually be suffused with a slumberous atmosphere and lethargy. The girls who were especially fond of gossip prattled on incessantly.
The bell rang among the unremitting noise inside the classroom, the teacher Kurokawa entered as though he had been waiting to do so. An unfamiliar male student followed behind Kurokawa, a clamor erupted.

"Wah!!" The schoolgirl seated in front of Akemi cried out, then she turned around unexpectedly. "Akemi, that's him, that's him. The transfer student!"

"Nnn... Mmm. I know."

Her face blushed as she replied, without realizing it her breathing grew uneven. Just a moment ago, Akemi had even deemed her friends beyond saving from their lascivious appearances, yet she was now straining her body forward for a closer look, this was the regrettable habit of a groupie.

Wow...

Akemi gulped unconsciously.

Just like what Kyouko said...

The transfer student wore a high-collared uniform. He was really tall. Not only that, his figure was so well-shaped that it made one stare in fascination. Kyouko's uncompromising manner during their earlier meeting was now excusable. Each and every one of his facial features were extremely elegant, in addition to that he had flowing black hair and somewhat tanned skin, he gave the initial impression of having a wild nature. But the most attractive aspect of him was his eyes.
Those glinting eyes that would occasionally look up from behind his fringe were extremely sharp, all of the schoolgirls under Akemi's charge were dazzled by them. Not only the schoolgirls, but the male students appeared threatened by those eyes as well. The students immediately quietened down, the classroom brimmed with an unusual calm.

"Right. Today I would like to introduce a transfer student. Quiet everyone."

Kurokawa announced to the students who were not being noisy at all. Then he picked up a piece of chalk and slowly wrote a name on the blackboard in large characters.

"Mmm--, the student standing over here will be joining our class from today onwards. He's a transfer student from the Kenritsu Jouhoku high school of Matsumoto in the Nagano Prefecture. Be sure to be friendly to him."

Urged by Kurokawa, the transfer student stepped forward. He had not smiled at all. Both of his hands were shoved into his pockets, his schoolbag was tucked under his arm. Perhaps he was not used to being with other people, he looked rather unfriendly, to the extent that he seemed a little angry. His external appearance suggested that he was the type of person who was unapproachable.
The transfer student uttered in a rough manner.

"I'm Ougi Takaya. Nice to meet you."

Ou...Ougi Takaya...

Akemi repeated his name over and over again as though she wanted to brand his name into her brain.

He...He looks a little scary...

"Ougi. Your seat is at the very back near the corridor. Since he has only just started, he may not be used to certain things. All of you should make him feel welcomed here."

Ah!

Akemi covered her mouth on the verge of letting out a squeal, Takaya's seat was diagonally behind her, towards the right.

His seat is so close to mine! What should I do?

"Class monitor,"

The teacher called out in this way, the student seated right in front stood up.

"Yes."

"Ougi. He's our class monitor - as well as the class' representative in the student committee - Shimada. If you're not sure about anything, you can ask him about it. There's no need to be shy. Shimada, you're also responsible for taking good care of Ougi."

"I understand."

The student known as Shimada bowed at the transfer student somewhat fearfully. Takaya merely nodded at him nonchalantly, then restored that impertinent look in his eyes once again, heading to his own seat.
The classroom was in absolute silence.
Everyone's eyes were fixed on Takaya as he walked over. He was not just any ordinary student, it seemed like they could all sense that.
Although attempting to strike up a conversation with him would probably prove to be difficult, they were still curious about him. Regardless of whether this was a good thing or not, this transfer student had instantly aroused the interest of those meeting him for the first time.
All of his movements right down to the way in which he sat down were rather overbearing. Perhaps the male students were overwhelmed by his presence, all of them had grown silent.

Wow... Wow... Wow...

Akemi was quivering intensely.

What should I do? I should be a little friendly. Friendly...

"N-Nice to meet you. Ougi-kun."

Takaya looked at Akemi, who was apparently doing her best to smile as she greeted him, in an uninterested manner. Then, in an unfriendly tone of voice, he said:

"Nice to meet you."

Upon his reply, Akemi's cheeks flushed as though they were about to release flares.

I've spoken with him!

Paying no attention to Akemi who was pressing against her cheeks, Takaya placed his thin schoolbag on the table, leaned back against his chair and looked around the classroom.
Despite their attempts to restrain themselves, the students still peered at him, their eyes full of curiosity.

"..."

Takaya seemed to have detected something in a certain line of sight. But he did not show it, he quietly lowered his gaze.
The one seated beside the window in the very last row had been staring at Takaya continuously.
It was Miike Tetsuya.

***

Math lesson on a Monday morning- how rotten.

Hearing the bell ring signaling the start of class, Koganezawa Kyouko from class 2D grabbed her textbooks looking frustrated. The first lesson was mathematics, the subject she was worse at. She had indulged in too much play during the weekend, not many of her school exercises were done.

A lesson by that old geezer, Kobayashi. He's so boring that it's sleep-inducing --

Considering her seat number, she felt a tinge of trepidation over the chance that she might be called out today, but she could always turn to the one beside her if crisis struck. Kyouko, cool as a cucumber, thought in this way.
Kyouko fingered her face, looking out the window absentmindedly at the ornamental clock beside the school gates.

I'll go to Akemi's class later on to meet the transfer student.

"Kyouko, Kyouko--!"

"?"

She was well-aware of the restless mood inside the classroom, as though something unusual had happened. A girl from the group of female students crowded at the front ran towards her.

"Kyouko! You should be happy now! Apparently, the math teacher Kobayashi is on sick leave today!"

"Really! So, is class canceled then?" Kyouko stood up, kicking back the chair. "Seriously? Wah, how lucky!"

"I heard that Kobayashi has been hospitalized. He probably won't be around for the entire semester!"

"That's great--!" Kyouko exclaimed powerfully, clenching her fists. "In that case, I no longer have to listen to that more-dead-than-alive voice of his. Just pass on peacefully, Kobayashi."

"If I knew about this earlier, I should've just come for the second session."

"You should be happy there's no class. Well then, I'm going out to have some fun."

Kyouko fetched her schoolbag and was about to leave when her friend called after her frantically.

"Wait a minute! Kyouko, where are you going!"

"There's going to be a huge sale in Braque at ten. I want to get in line as soon as possible."

Replying in this way, Kyouko paid no attention to the students, who were still chattering away noisily, and was close to stepping out of the classroom.

"What about P.E. in the second session?"

"Forget it, make up some excuse for me thanks."

"Kyouko, won't you get a warning if you skip classes this time?"

"It's not like I'm skipping classes. I just don't feel well."

"They'll immediately recognize that as an excuse!"

Kyouko uttered 'Bye bye' and forcefully opened the door. Just as she was about to step out, she crashed into the person standing there obstructing the doorway.

"Mmmpfhh!"

Startled, she looked up. A tall man stood there gazing at Kyouko.

"Eh.. Ehhhh?"

"Hey!" The bespectacled young man stared at Kyouko. "Lessons are about to start, where do you think you're running off to, young lady?"

"???"

For a brief moment, Kyouko could not comprehend the situation, she merely stood there blinking. She had never seen that youth before. His was fairly tall, he wore glasses and his hair was tied to the back in a small ponytail. He wore a beige coat, together with casual shirt and pants; his face - was rather smart-looking. So much that Kyouko felt quite enthralled.

The youth stepped onto the platform without any trace of hesitation, he deliberately slammed the class register and the small box of chalk in his hands onto the teacher's desk. Then he hollered.

"Hey! All of you, return to your seats!"

Everyone remained in their original positions appearing dumbfounded for a brief moment at this youth who had dashed in unexpectedly. Then they began to file back into their seats. Kyouko also returned to her desk in a state of confusion. Seeing that everyone was back in their places, the youth slammed his hands onto the top of the desk with a 'bang'.

"As all of you know, the math teacher Kobayashi-sensei will be taking a break for the whole of February due to an acute disease! But you still have to attend classes!"

Everyone was frightened by the youth's forcefulness, blinking outright. The youth laughed maliciously, then loudened his voice as he continued.

"I'm your substitute teacher, Chiaki Shuuhei! I'll be replacing Kobayashi-sensei from today onwards and be teaching your class math for one month! I'm very strict in my teaching, so all of you best be well-prepared!"

"Sub...Substitute teacher...?"

Kyouko's mouth was agape in stupefaction. Everyone else was staring ahead speechless.

"This..."

This sort of matter was unheard of!

Needless to say, in the very next moment, the hearts of all the students in the classroom cried out in this way.

***

The two new faces at Kenritsu Kojou high school immediately became the subject of discussion amongst the students during their leisure.
By lunch time, all of the schoolgirls on that floor had heard of this matter. This sort of information mongering could be regarded as the wildfire of gossip, the sort that left one open-mouthed.

"Kyouko!"

Inaba Akemi was standing with the group of welfare society members when she saw the figure of Koganezawa Kyouko. She darted to her side.

"Ah, Akemi."

"He's here, he's here!"

"The transfer student?"

"He's called Ougi Takaya. He's exactly like what you said, he's extremely popular! All the girls in our class have been seriously swept off their feet!"

Akemi swung her hands about in front of Kyouko, who was taller than her.

"Although he looks a little scary, Ougi-kun is really cute. He doesn't smile much but there's this really mature feel about him, all the guys in our class can't hold a candle to him. He's so charismatic!"

"Oh? I see."

Kyouko did not seem as responsive as this morning, dampening Akemi's spirits a little.

"What do you mean 'Oh? I see'? Is that all you've got to say? You didn't come to our class to see Ougi-kun, did you?"

"That transfer student, right? The one with that fierce expression in his eyes. As for me, I'm not interested in kids."

"What? What do you mean?"

"All of the male students in our cohort are kids. That's why I don't feel like associating with them. I'm not like you girls, all screechy because of that person."

Kyouko nipped on the straw of the aluminium packet drink, waving her hand indifferently.

"What the heck, Kyouko. Why is your attitude so different from this morning?"

"From today onwards, Koganezawa Kyouko has graduated from high school guys. A man, has to be mature. A woman won't see any progress by hanging around those rascals."

It was no exaggeration to consider Kyouko's manner as abrupt from the way she spoke, it made Akemi incline her head in puzzlement. Not long after, however, she had figured out the reason.

"Ah--, I get it. It's that new teacher, right? That substitute teacher who will be replacing Kobayashi-sensei."

"He's called Chiaki Shuuhei." Kyouko smiled, pressing her pink fingernail onto her pink lips. "Although he's young, he has the air of a mature man, not to mention that he's good-looking, attending his class is like heaven! I've been looking at him so much that I've become enchanted. The way he speaks is rough and his teaching is sloppy, but a truly brainy person won't show off his talent, right? He's a little cruel but he doesn't put on any acts, making one feel that he's reliable. This is what it means to want to be embraced by a man right! I really can't take it!"

Akemi observed Kyouko's endless gushing and lack of concern for the transfer student in a disappointed manner.

"I haven't seen him yet. Everyone's talking about him as well. But is he really that handsome? Seems like our class will be having a lesson with him on Thursday..."

"I've decided to capture Chiaki-sensei."

"Ah?" Akemi widened her eyes. "Capture? Don't tell me you're planning to get involved with a teacher this time? As if the guys in our cohort aren't enough..."

"What do you mean 'get involved', don't use such vulgar words."

"Seriously? But, he's a teacher you know?"

"What has that got to do with anything. A teacher isn't bad. The forbidden love between a high-school teacher and a schoolgirl! Mmmmm, how exhilarating~~~"

Akemi found it intolerable and looked up at the sky as she stood beside Kyouko who was lost in thought.

"Kyouko, your reputation isn't doing so well lately. People have been saying that you change boyfriends every month."

"Hmph. That's just some twisted rumor started by an unpopular girl. Akemi, why don't you run along now and pursue your 'handsome transfer student' like a little girl. Bye-bye."

Kyouko briskly walked out after she finished. From their long acquaintance, Akemi knew that she was not the kind of person to accept the kind advice of others.

"What a bother." Akemi sighed deeply.

***

"Here you go, transfer student."

A student said, placing a silver packet drink on Takaya's desk, then sat down in front of him. Takaya was in the process of filling in the school's enrollment form for the administrative office. He lifted his head. Seated in front of him was a slender-faced, slightly brown-haired male student. He was drinking from the same brand of packet drink. He said,

"That's for you. Just take it as a token of friendship."

"? ...You are?"

"I'm Endou. My desk's the third one in that row. I hear you're from Matsumoto right? I was in Nagano for junior high. Our meeting is some sort of fate I suppose."

The male student by the name of Endou leaned against the wall, bending one knee.

"Where are you staying now? In the city?"

"I ran into a minor problem," Takaya replied as he filled in the form. "The people who were supposed to move out haven't done so yet, so I'm putting up at a hotel for the time being."

"Hey, that's interesting. Staying with your parents?"

"Alone."

Takaya answered in an annoyed manner, regardless of whether Endou was aware of it, he nodded ambiguously.

"You're really amazing. Look, all the guys in our class. Every single one of them is bothered by you. You've a really compelling strength, everyone's so scared that they don't even dare come talk to you."

Endou smiled, indicating to Takaya. Once Takaya turned around, the students who had been peering at him hastily shifted their gaze. However, as though they could not suppress their curiosity, very soon they began to steal furtive glances again.

It doesn't matter...

Takaya was long used to this sort of scrutiny, he did not care, however--

There's something else it seems.

Someone was solemnly looking over in this direction. He was amongst the gang of students gathered beside the window. The one seated right in the center, listening to his friend's words as his gaze found its way to Takaya through the crowd.

Who is he...

This was something that had bothered Takaya since morning, one brash line of sight out of the multitude of stares.
That male student had a set of clearly defined eyes and nose. He was not very stout however he was definitely not one would consider beautiful; even so he had a magnetic presence.
Takaya was always tempering his ability to make discerning judgments of another's 'standing'. Could this male student be regarded as the leader of this class? He seemed popular, his companions appeared to be his subordinates.

"..."

Although their eyes met, the other did not cower. It was this unyielding impertinence that perturbed Takaya.

"What? What is it?"

Endou followed his line of sight and turned his head, the male student let fall his gaze as if nothing had happened, entering into conversation with that group of people. Endou finally understood.

"Ahh. Are you worried about that guy? Hmmm, I guess both of you are really the outstanding ones here."

"Huh?"

"The guy right in the center of that group gathered around the window, right? He's called Nezu. He's very popular in school."

"Popular? In what way?"

"Hmm--.. Should I say it's popularity or some other..."

Endou muttered something vague as though he was babbling. Apparently this could not be easily explained in a few words.

"Oh yeah, Ougi. If you're okay with it, I can show you around the campus. It would be really inconvenient if you don't know your way around right? Let's go."

***

From the windows in the corridor, the green trees of the nearby Kumamoto public park could be seen.
Approximately 20 years had passed since the completion of the school structure. The building was constructed in such a way that one three-storey block faced the north while another faced the south, not forgetting the covered walkway that linked them together in the center. It was quite similar to the symmetrical structure of Jouhoku high school. But every single classroom had air-conditioning, this made Takaya, who grew up in Matsumoto, feel this to be a strange place.

"This is the biology lab. Over here, the first-grade and third-grade classrooms are mainly on this side of the building."

"What about that? Looks like it's still under construction..."

"Hmm? Ah, that one."

Endou leaned out the window, looking at the structure covered with scaffolding, and replied.

"That's the gymnasium. It's now under reconstruction, real inconvenient I tell you. We have an office for our clubs, but most of our P.E. lessons are athletics, not to mention that the sports club used to utilize the gymnasium for their activities. It can't be used for the whole of next year, we won't have a gymnasium even when we finally graduate."

"Oh..."

"Then, over here..."

Takaya stopped in the corridor, looking at the speaker just above him. He seemed troubled by the music that was being broadcast.

"Is something wrong?"

"Do they always play such dull music at noon?"

The song, which sounded like Gregorian chanting, was sang by a man. A hymn-like tune. This piece of music had been playing continuously, causing Takaya to take particular notice of it.

"Hmm? Oh, that. It has always been like that."

"Always?"

"This flight of stairs leads to the rooftop."

Endou started up the steps. Takaya revealed a somewhat bewildered expression. He muttered as he followed behind him up the stairs.

"What a strange school."

"Is it really strange?"

"Is it not? Don't you feel anything weird after spending the entire day in this school?"

Mumbling 'Eh?', Endou turned around to face Takaya.

"Hey--. Ougi, don't tell me you have some sort of sixth sense?"

"--Sixth sense..."

"Hey, sure enough people who have this ability would be immediately aware of it. This school's pretty famous for that." Endou said as he climbed the stairs. "The name Kojou high school; this area was previously known as Kojoumachi. As you can see, there's the moat of Kumamoto castle right? In fact, the castle once stood in this very spot."

"Right here?"

"Yeah. When the one called Katou Kiyomasa came to Kumamoto, he was among one of the first to set foot in the castle that used to stand here. However the lord who stayed there did something evil and had thus committed seppuku, so Seisho-kou probably felt this place to be ominous. He wasn't interested in the old fortress so he rebuild a majestic and brand new Kumamoto castle. That's why this place is called 'Kojou' [old fortress]."

"Katou Kiyomasa..."

He was the historical persona that the civilians of Kumamoto were most familiar with. Compared with the lords of the Hosokawa clan who had governed this district for over 200 years during the Edo period, the name the locals would first recall was Katou Kiyomasa instead. He had heard that the people in this area informally acknowledged him as 'Seisho-kou'. The Hosokawa clan who had ruled Kumamoto for several generations had been a clan of nobles. The present head of the family was the Prime Minister of Japan several years ago.

"Since this school used to be the remains of a castle, ghosts would appear. The ghosts of the warriors of the ancient times."

Takaya deftly raised his eyebrows.

"Apparently, ghosts would appear everyday. There are rumors that some people have personally seen them. I myself have encountered those sort of things several times before despite not having any kind sixth sense. There are probably many of them."

"Do they appear that frequently?"

"The rumors themselves are mundane issues. When I first entered this school, I found it creepy too, annoying even. But after two years, I've grown used to it, I no longer fuss about every single tiny matter. Truth be told, this school sees plenty of student transfers, both in and out, though I'm not sure if it's because of this issue."

Opening the door to the rooftop, Endou stretched himself.

"Falling sick or having a nervous breakdown, students refusing to come to school or transferring to other schools, we get a few of these every year without fail. Today, I heard that the math teacher Kobayashi has been hospitalized. There are seriously a lot of such cases. Even if it's just a coincidence, it's still pretty freaky right, for it to have reached this extent?"

Endou walked to the side of the rooftop, he turned around to face Takaya as he leaned against the railing. He bit on the straw of the silver packet drink which was not entirely empty yet, and chuckled frankly.

"Within the last half year, three teachers have died. ...Even though those three were pretty old geezers."

"Died?" Takaya exposed an astonished expression. "...Has it always been like this from the start? The frequent appearances of the ghosts."

"I don't know. I've also heard of these rumors from my seniors who have graduated, but it seems like it's getting worse. So much that you can even get used to it. It's possible that there have been many occurrences."

Takaya's expression grew somber, he had been staring at the building on the opposite side.

"But everyone feels the same way, that's why we don't find it strange anymore. Furthermore, this school has one unusual feature."

Just when Takaya was about to ask what that feature was, the door that led to the stairs opened. Hearing voices, Takaya and Endou turned around. Five or six students walked out from there. Every single one of them had a yellow band on their right arm. They looked over.

"They've come, they've come." Endou lowered his voice and whispered. "This school's 'unusual' feature..."

"...What?"

The students walked towards them. All of them had an authoritative look on their faces.

That guy---...

It was the monitor of 2B, Shimada. It seemed like he was the one who had led the others here. After mumbling inaudibly to the student beside him, he retreated to the back. This eccentric situation made Takaya frown.

"So you're here."

A male student who wore rimless glasses approached from the back of the group, it seemed like he was the one with the highest rank. The school badge on his shirt collar indicated that he was one year their senior. The perfect order of his uniform was fit for a model student, no faults could be found in his dressing. The male student stepped forward and spoke to Takaya.

"You're the new transfer student from class 2B right."

Takaya squinted in a displeased manner. "Who are you people?"

"We went looking for you because we couldn't find you in the classroom. We want you to introduce yourself, that's why we specially came to say hello." The male student smiled, extending his hand outwards. "Once you become a student of this school, you must first greet us. Now, come with us. Transfer student."

Book 15 Prologue 夜渡の火祭り

--It seems like something disastrous will happen during the 'Yodo' this year.

The youngster overheard the adults discuss about this.
The second semester of school had just begun. The holiday mood from the summer vacation had yet to fade away completely.
The adults, who were the shrine parishioners, deliberated inside the shrine. This place was the youngster's playground, but upon the nearing of this occasion, play would no longer be allowed in this area as a result of the shinji.

--Let's take a peep inside the Hitaki hall.

His friend urged him in this way. A space that served to enclose a person, this sort of thing seemed especially capable of arousing the curiosity of young children. The youngster was interested as well thus they they stole into the shrine's compounds together. However, they did not get a chance to peer inside in the end. On the way home, the youngster heard the words of the adults that passed by.

Disastrous event...?

What was that? The youngster inclined his head and pondered.
Every year, with the advent of this period, the Shimomiya would conduct an ancient festival known as the Hitaki Shinji. In this celebration, the Shimomiya had been designated as the shrine of the 'Shimo Daijin' of the heavenly gods. The youngster had heard that this festival was held to protect the heavenly gods from the cold and the rice ears that have yet to fructify from the early frost. For this reason, fires would be continuously maintained to warm the heavenly gods.

The topic of discussion among the adults, was the Yodo matsuri to be held on the last day of the festival.

--Something disastrous will happen.

Just what on earth will happen? In the end, that disastrous event would be...

The youngster's heart felt vexed because of this, he could not even sleep peacefully.

Will it be okay?

He was worried for his sister.
They were twins. This summer, both of them would be 12. The youngster's sister had been chosen as the bonfire maiden for this year's shinji.
The so-called bonfire maiden, referred to the maiden who would be 'sealed' inside the hall of the Shimomiya Hitaki for 59 days and ensured that the fires for the heavenly gods were continuously burning. This year, his sister had been selected as the bonfire maiden.

The shinji commenced around mid-August. On August 19th, the Shimomiya goshintai was shifted to the gojinza of the Hitaki hall at dusk. The bonfire began that day.
The maiden would keep the flames alive under the jinza for 59 days during her enclosure in the Hitaki hall, prohibited from taking a single step out of the shrine.

It has been nearly a month since his sister was 'sealed'. She was permitted to skip school now that the summer vacation was over, this made the youngster a little envious. Their primary school classmates shared his sentiment. But to be forbidden from going outside for two months, this was truly an unbearable torture in the youngster's opinion.

As night fell, the youngster together with his paternal grandmother looked out at the Hitaki hall, thinking of his sister inside that building.

--Kihachi-sama seems fairly happy this year.

His grandmother smiled as she spoke.

--No sign of any chills, we had an abundant harvest this year.

Although his grandmother smiled, the rest of the adults seemed out of sorts, the youngster was extremely bothered by this. The youngster was subtly aware that the adults were growing more uneasy with each passing day.

--The number of strange occurrences in the Hitaki hall have increased.

When October came, the youngster heard of such rumors.

--Something disastrous will definitely happen in the Yodo this year.

Standing in the wind of the paddy fields that blew against the golden-yellow ears of the rice, the youngster ignorantly listened to the discussion amongst the adults.

The Kangyo festival had finally arrived. 59 days had passed. The bonfire maiden would extinguish the lighted fires and finally be allowed to leave the Hitaki hall. Then the 'Shimo Daijin' would be transported back to Shimomiya on a holy palanquin.
The Yodo matsuri would be held on the day after the Kangyo festival. On this night of the Yodo matsuri, known as the Mikagura Festival of Fire, many of the residents from the nearby vicinities would come to pay their respects.

His younger sister was dressed in a set of clean, beautiful robes, entering together with the Kagura dancers.

Huh...

Seeing her appearance, the people present could not help but gasp. Even the youngster himself could not believe that this person was his own sister for a split second.
There was a bonfire that burned the night sky in a raging manner.
Illuminated by that crimson blaze, his younger sister looked like another person. The youngster stood there astounded. That figure was simply like a true emissary of god, divine and beautiful.

So pretty...

The sound of a great drum came from the Kaguraden.
Then a curious tune was played on a flute.
The Kagura dancers shook the small bell, dancing in front of the flames.
Everyone looked on in fascination, absorbed by it. As though they were watching a scene from the ancient age of the gods.
The youngster also stood there speechlessly.
The autumn midnight.
As though the ringing of the bell swayed the ice-cold atmosphere.
A distinctly pure sound.
Beautiful dancers.
Standing to one side was the bonfire maiden attired in clean clothes.
The flames burned the night sky of Aso.
The moment approached, the bonfire was extinguished, the blocks of charcoal with lingering sparks of fire were scattered on the ground. The Kagura dancers led the bonfire maiden by hand, as they danced barefoot.
The white ankles of the bonfire maiden stepped into the sacred flames.
In that moment.
All of a sudden, the residual flames burned once again with an astonishing intensity.
The worshippers cried out. The Shinto priests stared as though they were exclaiming 'Ah'. The youngster's parents yelled as well.
The red lotus blaze that erupted unexpectedly attacked the maiden.
It seemed that way.

Huh...

The youngster widened his eyes.
In the center of the flames, the bonfire maiden did not move.
The fire did not burn the maiden. The crimson flames coiled around her body like a large dragon, wrapping around the maiden as though protecting her.
Everybody was in an uproar. An incredible sight.
But this was not the end.
At this moment, the flames really transformed into the figure of an orochi.
Everyone gasped loudly.
The orochi coiled its body around the maiden. The maiden did not show any sign of panic, she calmly lowered her eyes.
Then the heads of the orochi lifted up towards the heavens. In the next instant, it leaped into the night sky dragging its long fiery tail along.
Every single person involved in the ceremony witnessed it with their own eyes.
The fire orochi dashed to the nocturnal peaks of the Aso mountain range.
For a long period of time, the youngster stood gaping at the sky, then he came back to his senses and looked at his sister.
His younger sister's eyes were wide open with a hallowed essence, gazing fixedly at the night sky.
Staring at what had disappeared into the deep darkness of the night at Aso --
A single bundle of flames.

Book 14 Epilogue 闇戦国

From Chinese translations by Hinako.

Draft: Version 1 - final
Notes: Through his childhood and early teenage years, Nobunaga was well-known for his bizarre behavior and received the name of Owari no Ōutsuke (尾張の大うつけ The Fool of Owari). With the introduction of firearms into Japan, though, he became known for his fondness of Tanegashima firearms. He was also known to run around with other youths from the area, without any regard to his own ranking in society. His dressing and behavior deviated greatly from the samurai of those days. The gourd was one of those peculiar things that he carried around.

The Yokohama Kaikan was packed to capacity. The rock band SEEVA, currently enjoying escalating popularity and CD sales akin to the momentum of a rising dragon in the Japanese music industry, had a concert scheduled to take place in the Yokohama Kaikan today.
The time for the start of the performance drew near. The chests of the crazy fans gathered here swelled with impatience and irrepressible excitement, waiting for that unique man to appear on that wide stage.
The figure of Narita Yuzuru was seen at one corner of the vast hall. Yuzuru sighed, looking at the empty seat beside him. The person possessing the ticket to the seat next to him had not showed up.

So he can't make it after all...

Yuzuru had entered when the doors opened, he had been waiting here all this while, but it seemed like Takaya was not coming. Contrary to the excited spectators all around him, Yuzuru lowered his head with a disappointed look on his face, feeling disheartened. Yuzuru had always been looking forward to SEEVA's concert, due to his excitement he had woken up very early this morning. However, with Takaya's absence, not only was his joy was halved... he even felt that it was not worth coming. After the concert was over, they could have gone to the nearby pub that he had recently discovered, which had an extremely cheery atmosphere. Then, on returning home, Yuzuru could have shown Takaya the movie video cassettes that he had always wanted to show him... Yuzuru, who had planned all sorts of activities in his head, felt as though he was Takaya's lover of some sort.

Yuzuru gazed at the lonely seat amidst the enthusiastic atmosphere of the venue.

It doesn't matter if you come midway, just come as soon as you can, Takaya.

There was less than a few minutes before the start of the show. On the stage, the band players had begun to take their positions.

Hearing the laughter of the delighted youngsters, the lead singer looking at the sheet music turned around.

"Looks like they're really happy. What is it?"

"Ahh. Seems like we've an interesting guest today."

At this moment, backstage, the youth with maroon hair standing beside the door laughed as he informed tonight's lead of this matter. The red-headed man wearing a pair of black leather pants, seated cross-legged on the folding chair in front of the makeup table, was the rock singer - SEEVA, also known as Shiba Eiji.
On his wheat-colored skin, he wore a fancy shirt with designs of the national flag, a strange bottle gourd* hung at his waist. The same national flag was painted on his face, a truly mad sort of guise.

"Interesting guest?"

Shiba glanced at the youth with maroon hair. Was the youngster, who looked like a senior high-school student, his friend? However from the manner of their conversation, the two of them appeared to have a master-servant relationship.

"Who is it?"

"An important friend of my Lord's." The youngster replied, pointing at his own forehead. "There's a firm mark of friendship over here..."

"What... Narita Yuzuru came?" Shiba unexpectedly widened his eyes. "That is indeed interesting. Looks like Narita Yuzuru has been fairly enchanted with my songs. As expected of a close friend of mine. This is not surprising, not surprising at all."

The youngster with maroon hair - Hatayama Satoshi - smiled lightly, leaning against the door.

"My Lord's singing voice can charm anyone. The people of this era would never have expected, not even in a dream, to be able to hear the singing voice of the great daimyo, the Sixth Demon King."

"All of the music of this age are incomparably new, utterly fascinating. I like it very much, Ran." Shiba addressed the youth in this way. "I also like dance and popular ballads, but this is still the best. This is what I've been looking for. This sort of violent madness, speed, rhythm, this is the sound I've always wanted. Like the brain is about to explode, like the heart is about to burst, something that can grab hold of the soul...!"

Shiba's eyes glinted like a child as he finished with his explanation in excitement. He abruptly squinted and said to Hatayama.

"About those Satomi guys, seems like the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' failed this morning."

The look on Hatayama Satoshi - namely, Mori Ranmaru - grew solemn.
"According to the investigation, it seems like they were obstructed by the Uesugi and were thus defeated."

"Was it that Kagetora guy? Hmph... can't be helped I suppose. Still as much the nuisance as before." Shiba's hands clenched at his knees, his eyes glinted in aggression. "The Satomi have also done something unnecessary. I only wanted to acquire Enoshima. As well as use the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' in that small place..."

"The Satomi knew we would implement the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' at Enoshima. Furthermore, they've seen our bitter conflict with the Takeda, they probably wanted to open a path leading to Enoshima from Fujinomiya for us. Or perhaps they wanted to use the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' to earn our favor."

"This was originally a good plan. Just that we're now back to square one." Shiba laughed arrogantly as though he was harboring evil designs. "Let it be. I shall attack slowly. Enoshima, Itsukushima and Chikubushima. The Oda intends to acquire these three islands, to have the Benzaiten ladies of these three places in our hands. Yes, the interest is still there at the back of my mind."

Shiba's brain had already completed the blueprint of the plan. With a lofty, impertinent look in his eyes, he stared fiercely into the air.

"You just wait for it, Uesugi, Takeda."

The sound of flustered footsteps came from the corridor, the door opened, it was one of the crew. He wore a silver, sleeveless tee with blue 'SEEVA' imprints on the back, the outfit specially made for the staff.

"Shiba-san, it's time to begin, please get ready!"

"I know. I'm coming now." Shiba replied, taking off his shirt, he picked up a gorgeous velvet cloak placed on the side. He stood perfectly straight. "Head on to the seats, you should listen to this as well. For some unknown reason, I'm especially excited tonight. A rare mood, as though I'm going to battle this very moment. Prepare yourself. Tonight, I'm going to strike down everybody's hearts, give a magnificent performance that would leave everyone dazed!"

"Please do your best."

"Mmm. Tonight I will dance to one ultimate 'Atsumori' specifically for Narita Yuzuru. The greatest 'Atsumori' to celebrate Oda Nobunaga's resurrection."

Without a doubt, the person standing over there was Oda Nobunaga himself, who had possessed the modern individual, Shiba Eiji. In the silence of these two years, he had performed kanshou on Shiba's body. While secretly conducting preparations to unify the world step by step, he was enjoying rising success as a singer on the surface, subsequently solidifying his status in the industry within an amazingly short period of time.

"Just wait, my fans."

Nobunaga lifted his sharp, twinkling eyes in an unreserved manner, he looked far ahead, swishing the cloak onto his shoulders. The incident involving the Satomi was but a prologue. Merely a small chess piece sacrificed for the sake of climbing to the summit. The Oda's true stage would follow after that.

The numerous eyes facing the stage very soon concentrated on one spot. The people, overwhelmed with hunger, stretched out their arms, pursuing his figure - his song. Everyone was waiting. Waiting for the overwhelming force that shook the world. A force like the sun. With a posture brimming with dignity, Nobunaga stood in the center of the stage, his body bathed in the intense beams, he flung away his cloak, powerfully stepped towards the microphone and roared.

"Come! Let us begin---!"

Book 14 Chapter 17 祭の終わり

From Chinese translations by Hinako.

Draft: Version 1 - final

The morning sunshine shone into the courtyard as the small birds chirped in the clear wintry air.
The sharp clack issued by the shishiodoshi beside the pond reverberated through the entire courtyard. Originally hiding in some place, a tiny creature resembling a small rabbit hurried out from the underbrush, climbing onto the tree branch on the right.

A man attired in a kimono, seemingly the landlord, was seated in the guestroom facing the courtyard, having a meeting with his subordinate who had come to make his report. The subordinate recounted all that had happened at Enoshima the previous night to his master.

"I see. So the Satomi were unexpectedly conspiring such a deed..."

The master did not seem overly surprised. That man - the possessor who was the head of the Takeda clan, Takeda Harunobu, casually leaned on his elbow, thinking of how the Satomi's aspirations were crushed within a single night, he smiled slightly.

"Constructing a path from Fujinomiya to Sagami is not such a bad idea, but it looks like they lacked the power required. The road that should have led to the Oda, ultimately became a road that led to their own annihilation, no?"

"My Lord." The one who was present, the chief commander of the western military front, Yamagata Masakage, called out. "Miura Yoshimoto committed an act of betrayal by relying on help from the Satomi, in the end he died at the hands of the Uesugi. How should the Miura territory be handled?"

"Place it under the direct control of the Takeda. Let Hara Masatane manage that. Unexpectedly wanting to attack Sagami, the Oda truly cannot be taken lightly. Looks like I'll have to seriously establish a government."

Shingen squinted his slender eyes, he stroked that fearless high nose with his finger, he looked over once again.

"That foolish Yoshimoto, I never expected him to be so unwise as to abandon his own Miura territory. He was probably mislead by the flattering words of the Satomi."

He was told that Yoshimoto wanted to be the lord of the Kanto region.

"Miura Yoshimoto, what a shallow man he was. The Satomi were equally ignorant."

"...My Lord."

"My own talents were granted by the heavens as the powers to be saw fit, it was pre-destined. My pain is something that others cannot bear, why can't they accept this reasoning?"

Shingen's cold line of sight shifted to the petals and leaves of the sakura tree in its first bloom.

"Yamagata. Send the troops to Fujinomiya. Expel the Oda's army, make it such that they won't dare set foot on the eastern side of Fujikawa again."

"Understood!"

"Immediately send troops to Bousou. We'll take advantage of this moment of the Satomi's defeat, seize Bousou before the Oda's suigun become active. Summon Baba Nobufusa. I want him to take charge as general."

After the subordinates powerfully replied, they hastily departed the room.

"It's time for you to take the stage." Shingen faced the courtyard, he uttered in a resounding voice. "Akechi-dono needs our help. We can't just sit here and ignore the movements of the Uesugi. Are you well enough for a trip?"

"My orders."

A man replied, emerging from beneath the shadow of the sakura branches. He was a good-looking man with black hair that complimented his snow-white skin. He curled his brightly-colored blood red lips, smiling flirtatiously.

"There's still the matter of Narita Yuzuru."

"Has your wound healed?"

The handsome man smiled, looking at the master. "That sort of wound, doesn't count as an injury."

"Blood really suits you."

"I will not shed my own blood. Furthermore, I cannot just leisurely lie in bed at this important juncture when my lord wishes to conquer the world."

"Indeed. You are still the only one who can handle the Uesugi's shadow. I shall be looking forward to your endeavors."

The man narrowed his eyes, brimming with confidence he bowed in respect.

"For the dominion of our Takeda."

A gust of wind blew at the branches, a cluster of white sakura flowers fluttered down onto the black earth. Shingen inserted his hands into the sleeves of his kimono, silently looking out at the courtyard which was now devoid of any person. As if wanting to interrupt the sound of the running water and the chirping of the birds, the clack of the shishiodoshi resounded loudly.

***

When Nikaidou Reiko awakened, she was lying on a hospital bed.

"Are you awake?"

Feeling like she had heard this voice before, Reiko slowly turned her head, she saw Sakaki and another individual, who looked like a police officer, standing beside her bed.

"...Chief. I..."

"You collapsed beside the buried cave. Seems like you weren't hurt, but the doctor said that you need some time to recover."

"I..."

Reiko felt confused. Her body was unusually tired, she even found it extremely cumbersome to move one finger, however there was indeed no wound whatsoever, neither was there anything unusual with her constitution.

"Ah..."

Upon recovering her alertness, she did not see any sign of Ayako and the others. Didn't she mention wanting her to be the yorishiro for Benzaiten, had she succeeded? What happened after that?

"Nikaidou-kun."

Sakaki called her, Reiko was startled.

"Something very serious happened at Enoshima and Fujinomiya. You seem to have some deep connection to these happenings. If it isn't too much trouble, would you please tell us all that you saw at Enoshima."

***

The matters that had to be handled after the incident at Enoshima required a considerable amount of time, especially since a company was involved this time. How would the police manage this?
Exorcising the defeated soldiers of the Satomi took quite a while. As Takaya could not use his exorcism power at the moment, the 'Ken En' had to assemble the spiritual bodies that had hardened into spiritual rocks at the Koyurugi shrine and conduct a purification ritual, it was rather troublesome.
The cave had been completely buried. Ayako planted the vajra at the entrance of the fuuketsu, smoothly enforcing the seal.

It appeared that Satomi Yoshitaka had been purified. According to Yagami who had pursued him, only the body of the hyouza was left at the scene, Yoshitaka's soul was no longer there. There were traces of a purification. ...What happened there? Had he exhausted all of his strength from his wrestle with Benzaiten?
Yagami seemed to be bothered about something, he had a puzzled expression throughout, however, he did not tell Takaya about it in the end.

After dawn, Chiaki returned from Fujinomiya for the meeting with the others. Just Chiaki alone. He had parted ways with Irobe at Fujinomiya.

--Please keep our affairs a secret from Kagetora-dono for the time being.

Chiaki had been repeatedly urged in this way by Irobe when they separated at the border. Because of this he had been provoked once again and stared at Irobe with eyes full of anger.

--What do you mean by that? What are you guys covertly conspiring?

--There's no conspiracy. We just do not want Kagetora-dono to have any unnecessary doubts at this point.

Chiaki had plainly expressed his displeasure.

--Being all sneaky like that, isn't that pretty suspicious in itself?

--Perhaps so. However if you do not keep this a secret, I can't be certain if you will regret it one day.

This had startled Chiaki, then his expression had turned serious.

--What do you mean?

--I will tell you the details of the situation the next time round. Before that time comes, this matter...

"Please keep it a secret."

After Irobe had finished in this way, he brought up another point. It was about Kotarou.

--Don't leave the authoritative command of the Uesugi to that pillar of the Fuuma. That guy is planning to make Kagetora-dono return to the Hojo.

--Return to the Hojo?

--That guy is Ujiyasu's servant. Don't let him find out too much about the internal workings of the Uesugi.

Irobe had departed after leaving this advice. Having been left there by himself, Chiaki's heart had felt extremely uncomfortable from doubts and suspicion.

Those brats, what are they secretly up to...

All of it was unclear. Furthermore, was it really true that Kotarou wanted to make Kagetora return to the Hojo?

In that place which cannot be seen, what on earth happened?

Chiaki stopped the car at the Koshigoe inlet near Koyurugimisaki, he had arrived at the place of the meeting at Koyurugi shrine. Takaya and the others were presently gathering the solidified spiritual rocks and carrying out the purification rites, but once Takaya saw Chiaki, he told Kotarou that he wanted to rest for a while and came to Chiaki's side. The long-distance drive from Fujinomiya to this place was not a relaxing one. Chiaki had been ruminating over Irobe's words all along, his face was frighteningly tense, however Takaya assumed he was tired.

"I was told you exorcised Satomi Yoshiyori at Fujinomiya. Thanks for the hard work."

"..."

"How did you know about the true nature of the 'Method of Connecting to Hell'? How did you find out about it?"

Chiaki could not answer. Irobe did not want him to talk about it. Takaya was still gazing at Chiaki, who remained silent. Chiaki moved his gaze away to escape Takaya's unrestrained scrutiny.

"I accidentally came by some information while I was chasing the Takeda. That's all."

"So the Takeda just allowed the Satomi to have their own way despite knowing of this situation?"

"..."

Chiaki glared at Takaya with a chilling expression in his eyes. Apparently, Takaya was aware that Chiaki was hiding something from him from his inarticulate reply.

"What happened?"

Takaya's ignorant look which displayed his frank suspicion infuriated Chiaki, who had been desperately suppressing his fretfulness all along. He fiercely hoisted his eyes and roared.

"You're asking me what happened...?"

All of a sudden, Chiaki savagely grabbed the lapels of Takaya's jacket and strongly shoved him against the pillar behind him.

"Nnh...!"

"I never expected that you'd dare say these words in such a leisurely manner! It's all because you developed some sort of dementia up here, so you're all ready to make trouble due to your ignorance...! To think that you'd dare ask me what happened...!"

All of the things that Chiaki had long restrained at the bottom of his heart exploded out, he bellowed madly.

"What kind of joke is this! What, is this an escape from reality! What do you mean your yearning is too deep, you gutless brat! It's all because of your idiotic and blind escapes that things have turned out this way!"

"Let go of me, Chi...aki...!"

"Yasuda-dono!" Yagami, shocked by this commotion, frantically hurried over to stop it. "What are you doing! Please do not use violence, Yasuda-dono! Yasuda-dono!"

"Don't be a bother, back off! What, you don't want to acknowledge it, don't assume that you can go on behaving like a spoiled brat! A dead person is dead! Death means the end with no exceptions! You'll only bring more trouble to others by running away thoughtlessly like this! What do you mean you'll die if you acknowledge that Naoe is dead. He's obviously dead yet you still think him alive...!"

Being fiercely held against the pillar by the lapels of his jacket, Takaya's face contorted in pain.

"What exactly about that guy is Naoe? Huh? Tell me clearly, which part of that brat Kotarou is Naoe! Naoe died at Hagi, he died protecting your heart from getting shot! Isn't that right!"

"Yasuda-dono, don't!"

"Do you really find it so unbearable if Naoe is not by your side! You're not some three-year-old kid, don't act like a spoiled brat! What the hell do you expect Naoe to do! If you want to be violated by that man so badly, then let me do it in his stead! Damn asshole!"

"Kagetora-sama!"

Kotarou heard the clamor and ran over. He hurried to Takaya's side, he wanted to pull Chiaki away, however Chiaki was not willing to release Takaya.

"Nagahide! Let him go!"

"Who gave you permission to address me in that manner, Kotarou! What are you trying to pull! What do you intend to do with this brat! Are you impersonating Naoe for the sole reason of wanting to make him return to the Hojo! What a dirty tactic, you vulgar piece of shit!"

"Yasuda-dono...! Please calm down!"

"Are you listening to me, Kagetora!" Chiaki snarled in front of Takaya. "Naoe is dead! It's about time you accept this! Naoe is dead! That guy is dead!"

"No...!" Takaya turned his face away, he groaned. "He didn't die... Naoe is still alive..."

"He died a long time ago! The one here is Kotarou! Not Naoe!"

"He said he wants to come to my side..."

Chiaki was startled, he swallowed his words. Takaya painfully shut his eyes, he muttered as though restraining his pain.

"--He wants me to wait..."

Chiaki was confounded. "Kagetora..."

Kotarou and Yagami did not understand the meaning behind Takaya's words. All this while, Takaya had really believed that Kotarou was Naoe. It should be this way. However, his last words sounded like...

"..."

Takaya's words were thus discontinued.
Chiaki, Kotarou and Yagami stood in their respective positions without moving, as though time had come to a standstill.
