That night, a warm breeze atypical of the weather in winter blew over Enoshima.
A splendid bonfire was alight in the middle of the Sannomiya of Enoshima shrine. A great number of guard soldiers were positioned on the roads leading to the Okutsunomiya and the cave where the Esoteric ritual was about to be carried out.

Numerous mermaids floated about in the sea, their eyes glinted orange-yellow. They were the 'Yachou' gathered by the Satomi for the purpose of guarding against any invaders that might enter via the sea. As the cave was fronted by the sea, there was an especially large number of protective mermaids.

Nearly an hour had passed since the start of the Esoteric ritual.
Kaizaki stood at the entrance of the cave, his head was inclined as he listened to the Satomi Yoshitaka's voice originating from the inside of the cave. The altar for the spell had been set up in the deepest part of the First Cave. The 'Sutra of the Ten Kings' resonated from within. No electricity was used for the internal illumination of the cave, the flames of the candles flickered at fixed distances from each other, brightening the dark, moist wall of the cavern.

Kaizaki faced the sea.
The waves beating up the shore tonight were calmer than usual.
The execution of the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' inside the cave was still in preparation stage at the moment. They would wait for the invocation of Benzaiten at the Okutsunomiya to be set on track, after which Benzaiten's power would be transmitted to the primary altar. Once this energy is received, the implementation of the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' would then officially begin.

Kaizaki was not excited, neither did he look impatient, he was fairly calm. What was he thinking of, not even his subordinates could read what was weighing on his mind from his expressionless face.
Or was he perhaps waiting for something?
The resounding voice of Yoshitaka chanting the scriptures came from the very depths of the cave.

"Kaizaki-sama!" A subordinate attired in a suikan dashed over from Chigo fuchi, reporting to Kaizaki.

"What is it?"

"Masaki Tokishige-sama has a message for Kaizaki-sama."

"Tokishige-dono?"

"Yes! Tokishige-sama said that he has located Uesugi Kagetora's whereabouts! Apparently, they have sent their men into Enoshima, please immediately strengthen the garrison!"

"Are you giving me orders?"

Questioned by Kaizaki's cold voice, the subordinate could not help but stutter in reply.

"No... This..."

"There's no need to worry, the garrison has been completely secured. So, Kagetora's whereabouts have been found?"

"Yes! Tokishige-sama said that he will immediately kill him the moment he finds him!"

"He should take care not to get himself killed instead."

"Un...Understood!" The subordinate fearfully withdrew with a bow, he left the place as though he was fleeing from Kaizaki. No one noticed that Kaizaki's lips were slightly twisted, displaying a pained expression.

***

Elsewhere, a homa-mandala had been installed inside the prayer hall of the Okutsunomiya, pressing on with the invocation of Benzaiten. Miura Yoshimoto was seated before the crimson flames of the homa-mandala. Yoshimoto began with the Esoteric ritual of the Eighteen Paths, he knotted his fingers in a series of complex mudra formations and utilized the ritual implements, carrying out the procedures to beckon Benzaiten. The moment these formalities are completed, they would finally be able to start the ceremony of calling upon Benzaiten.
Constructed on the inner side of the homa-mandala was an altar positioned at a higher level, on which the yorishiro dressed in white robes was lying. The shrine maidens sat side by side towards her left and right.

"On Sorasabataei Sowaka, On Sorasabataei Sowaka--"

Holding his fingers in the mudra of Benten, Yoshimoto's forehead was covered with large drops of sweat. He was devoting his entire strength to the Esoteric ritual, even the thick veins at his temples had emerged. The prayer hall was sweltering, the tension heightened.
Ayako, disguised as a shrine maiden, gazed at Yoshimoto's manner.

That was fast...

Ayako could feel the encompassing atmosphere intensify. Very soon, Benten would descend into the yorishiro - into Reiko's body. For the purpose of the curse, Reiko had been forced to drink an arcanum, and was already unconscious. She was put through a religious fasting process, so that she would be ready for Benzaiten's descent at any moment. Listening attentively, Ayako peered at her surroundings. The Satomi's troops were indeed numerous. It would be great if Takaya could smoothly seize the yorishiro's unrestrained might (and control her movement by means of his own willpower) via the attached gohou douji...

Ayako looked solemn as she faced the flames of the burning cedar sticks that brightly illuminated the interior of the building.

We're counting on you, Kagetora.

At this moment, Takaya was at Koyurugimisaki steadily proceeding with the spiritual waveform synchronization. It seemed like he could sense what stage the implementation of the invocation was at. As the Esoteric ritual reached its apex, Takaya's expression grew somewhat solemn. The mirror placed in front of Takaya exhibited a change at this very juncture.

What...!

No wonder Kotarou, who was standing guard, stared at it in surprise. The mirror displayed the appearance of the individual who was carrying out the Esoteric ritual.

This is...!

It was Miura Yoshimoto. What was the meaning of this? The person who had previously requested an alliance with the Uesugi for the armed suppression of the Satomi, had now unexpectedly become a subordinate of the Satomi participating in the 'Method of Connecting to Hell'.

Has he betrayed us?

Kotarou scowled slightly, gazing at Enoshima. Had he been tempted by the support of the Oda? However Kotarou was not shocked. This degree of betrayal in the world of Yami Sengoku, renegades were common issues that were of little importance. He immediately restored his usual expressionless face and looked over Takaya.

It was possible that Takaya had realized this the moment he began with the spiritual waveform synchronization. But, he did not waver. Takaya also knew that Miura Yoshimoto was part of the Miura clan that had been extinguished by Hojo Soun. Had he anticipated this move from the very beginning?

Kotarou's subordinates, the Fuuma ninja, appeared from the underbrush, calling out to their leader.

"What is it?"

"There is some abnormal activity in the surroundings."

"What?"

"Armed personnel from an unknown faction have surrounded the promontory. We fear they might be the subordinates of the Satomi."

Have we been discovered?

Kotarou squinted. Although it was only a matter of time before they were discovered, it seemed like the Satomi were not unskilled after all. Kotarou immediately gave an order to his subordinates.

"Deal with them at once. Do not let them close in to Saburo-dono. Do not let anyone near this place before Saburo-dono has finished with the spiritual waveform synchronization. Is that clear?"

"Understood!"

Upon hearing the order, the Fuuma ninja disappeared with the rustling sounds of the underbrush. Kotarou focused his attention on any changes in the surroundings, expanding his cautionary sensors, he grabbed the reijuu crystal. Several layers of a unique defense network of the Fuuma was set up around Koyurugimisaki, it would not be so easily breached, however there have been unforeseen cases.

At this moment.

Takaya's upper body shook all of a sudden. At the same time, seven beams of light shot out of the mirror, shining like a moon going through a change of phase.
Benten had finally descended into the body of the yorishiro.
The energy emitted by Takaya carried an air of contention. Benten's power was conveyed to Takaya via the gohou douji. Takaya immediately elevated the degree of his wave of thought as though he was responding to it. Takaya's battle had thus begun. Takaya and Miura Yoshimoto, who would be able to gain control over that unrestrained might? This was a fight with Yoshimoto. Yoshimoto was concentrated on this curse to the extent of disregarding his own life, hence Takaya could not take this lightly.
He centralized the strength of his power, causing the air around him to tense up. Takaya's spirit was now reaching its peak.

***

"Ohhhh!"

The people at the scene could not help but gasp in admiration. In the next instant, the fires of the burning cedar sticks swayed greatly, transforming into the figure of Benten consisting of a human head and a serpent's body, after which the yorishiro's body promptly erupted into blue flames.

"Benzaiten!"

She had descended. Benzaiten had now entered Reiko's body. In an instant, Reiko's face contorted in pain, her body began to convulse fiercely. Not long after her eyes widened with a stare that evidently contained a divine essence.

"!"

Reiko's eyes glinted red like a snake's. She slowly sat up on the bed, turning towards them.

"It's the Goddess Benten...!"

"Goddess Benten has descended!"

Everyone exclaimed in unison, an uproar circulated all around. Reiko's body was aflame with a pale shimmer of hot air. The open lapels of her white robes made her look extremely sultry. She moved with an air of composure, setting one leg over the other, she sat extremely upright and looked over. Her eyes were full of dignity. This divinity was absolutely nothing like Reiko, causing Ayako to gasp.

It's really Benzaiten...

The blaze of the homa-mandala raged more intensely.
Yoshimoto could feel that substantial amount of energy, he chanted the shingon loudly with increased vigor. Reiko's body, housing Benzaiten, issued a clear white radiance in the darkness of the night.

The power that Benten possessed was to be delivered to the cave from the Okutsunomiya via Yoshimoto. Following Benten's descent, within a split second the homa-mandala in the cave turned to a deep blue, blazing with greater intensity. At the same time, Satomi Yoshitaka's body swelled with an exceptional volume of energy.

Has she descended...!

Sensing that his body was brimming with formidable strength, Yoshitaka widened his eyes. The immense richness and exaltation that was difficult to describe in words made Yoshitaka tremble.

I never expected such a feeling to exist in this world...

So much that it made him feel as though he had become a god, this richness surpassed the level of the human spirit. As though he had become an individual from a different dimension, as though he had transcended dimensions...!

Nothing is impossible!

Yoshitaka had such confidence. As long as he had this power, there was nothing he could not handle. He could achieve everything!

Anything can be done...!

"On Yamarazya Ugurabirya Agassya Sowaka, On Yamarazya Ugurabirya Agassya Sowaka."

The fires of the homa reacted hugely to Yoshitaka's shingon. The pale blazing flames flickered wildly, highlighting the figures of the deities. This response felt completely different from before. It was almost unbelievable, Yoshitaka could carry out the curse with such ease.

"On Yamarazya Ugurabirya Agassya Sowaka!"

A shingon that nearly delivered his request to the heavens, the perfect figure of the Enma-ou arose from the fires of the homa. In the next moment, the ten Kings of Hell appeared around the homa-mandala.

"Ohhh!"

Shinkou-ou, Shokou-ou, Soutei-ou, Gokan-ou, Henjou-ou, Taizan-ou, Byoudou-ou, Toshi-ou, Gotoutenrin-ou and the Enma-ou. The ten judges of Hell had large bodies, they stood side by side before Yoshitaka. Every single one of them was wearing a red Taoist garb, possessing strict appearances in accordance to their duty as judges who could ascertain any truth.
Yoshitaka practically felt his entire body freeze at this astounding sight. The Enma-ou with huge eyes like copper bells stared directly at Yoshitaka who looked dumbfounded in enthrallment at the ten kings. Wanting to drive away his own fear, Yoshitaka proclaimed loudly.

"Oh, Enma-ou! Please open the path leading to the realm of the dead!"

Yoshitaka placed his hands together again, and fervently repeated the Sutra of the Ten Kings starting from the beginning.

At the Okutsunomiya, Miura Yoshimoto entreated Benten in prayer with a desperate expression. He had entered a state of partial entrancement. As though there was something attached to his body, Yoshimoto continuously shouted out the shingon. Beads of his sweat splurged out, white foam trickled out from the sides of his mouth, he had gone overboard in his concentration, he appeared to have lost his usual cognizance. Reiko, the yorishiro, was seated on the bed with her legs crossed, holding her hands in the mudra of Benten just like the stately physical body of a Buddha or a bodhisattva. Her beauty stirred everybody's spirit. Everyone was enraptured by the moment as though in a daze, Ayako alone gazed at Yoshimoto and Reiko in turn with a nervous look.

Still not done yet? Kagetora.

The unrestrained power of the yorishiro was still in Yoshimoto's hands. If this persisted, Benten's power would continue to flow into Yoshitaka's hands and allow him to accomplish the 'Method of Connecting to Hell', wouldn't it?
Suddenly wondering if Takaya's unstable spirit was affecting the synchronization at this moment, Ayako felt worried.

Hurry! Kagetora!

Had Ayako's prayer been answered?
The fires of the homa-mandala swayed all of a sudden, they were nearly extinguished. At this point, Yoshimoto yelled out 'Ah' halfway through his chanting of the shingon as though something had scared him.

"Wh...What!"

Yoshimoto anxiously re-concentrated his spirit. However Benten's power, previously flowing straight through him,, had been diverted to a different location, it was no longer directed at him.

"How can that be...! What's going on!"

The break in Yoshimoto actions stirred up a ruckus in his surroundings. Yoshimoto assumed that Benten had left the body of the yorishiro, however that was not so. The yorishiro was still in front of them, encircled in clear white light, the pale flames wrapped around her like a celestial maiden's robe of feathers. Yoshimoto yelled out in confusion.

"What on earth is going on!"

An extremely powerful attraction force from some other area was present. Benten's power had been drawn away by a large magnetic force that far exceeded Yoshimoto's strength. What was the true nature of this magnetic power!

"W-Why! Who is doing this!"

"Ohhh! Goddess Benten!"

Hearing the commotion, Yoshimoto looked at the yorishiro. Reiko had stood up, leaving the platform she was now stepping down at a slow pace.

"Goddess Benten is...!"

"She is walking over, she is walking over!"

He did it...!

Ayako stood up as well. Takaya had finally succeeded in wrestling that unrestrained power from Yoshimoto's hands. Reiko's body stored an abundant amount of energy, emitting a hallowed brilliance, she approached with graceful motion.

"Nnnh... Wah!"

Yoshimoto stared dumbstruck. Reiko stepped into the center of the homa-mandala. Although the intensity of the flames had weakened, it was still extremely hot. Yet Reiko had simply moved into it without any trace of fear.

"What's going on! Don't... Don't come over!"

The yorishiro did not listen to him. Yoshimoto could not help but back off from the homa-mandala. After passing through the flames of the homa, Reiko placed both of her hands on her chest, and chanted a shingon. Then spheres of fire arose from her hands, within the next intant, Benten had cast them at the soldiers of the Satomi.

"Nnarghh!!"

There was a strong blast, the soldiers of the Satomi were flung backwards. A large crater was left in the floor. A truly astonishing power. Reiko's eyes twinkled brightly with a red ominous light. She tore off the wig as though she was feeling vexed, concentrating her power in her fists once again.

"!"

The masses of fire struck out from her hand unintermittedly, everywhere in the compound the blasts left a ruin in their wake. Benten had destroyed the homa-mandala until not a sign of it was left, proceeding with her attack on the Satomi's soldiers with greater cruelty.

"Nnarghh!!"

"Waahhhh...! Benzaiten...!"

As though she took pleasure in destruction. Indignant roars and cries of grief resounded all over the place, the people fled in panic from Benten who had abruptly went out of control.

"Just... Just what on earth happened!"

"Let's go! Destroy every single one of them!" On Ayako's orders, the 'Ken En'-possessed shrine maidens jumped up from their seats and moved into action. They attacked the browbeaten soldiers of the Satomi fleeing the battlefield, Ayako also began to exorcise the Satomi's soldiers one after another.

"Wh....What!"

The Okutsunomiya was a scene of pandemonium. All over the area, some were fleeing, some were confronting the enemy, while others were howling. The masses of light exploded through the darkness striking out in all directions, even the trees were uprooted, chunks of earth were scattered everywhere from the bombardments, the building was demolished. Benzaiten reduced all that she saw and touched to a wreck, tearing down everything to pieces. Then she exited the Okutsunomiya, proceeding towards the cave.

"Some-Someone stop her! Stop Benten!"

Yoshimoto cried out in desperation. The 'Yachou' gave their lives in their attempts to hinder Benten, however that formidable strength of Benten did not even allow them the opportunity to demonstrate their skills. They were thrown back one after another.

"Don't let her reach the cave! Stop her!"

Yoshimoto shouted, attacking with incantations together with his subordinates. However, it seemed like Benten had created a shield, none of their attacks were effective, neither could it encumber her progress.

"Damn it! It doesn't matter, continue to attack! Continue to attack with incantations!"

"The yorishiro will be injured!"

"As long as she doesn't die it will be fine! Strike her down with incantations, stop her from advancing! I will immediately reclaim control over her!"

Yoshimoto concentrated his spirit, wanting to synchronize with the yorishiro once again, however the yorishiro could not be controlled at all. She did not obey a single one of Yoshimoto's directives. While Yoshimoto was frantically struggling to regain control of the yorishiro, Benten turned and attacked him.

"Narghh!"

"...Yoshimoto-sama!"

Having been struck, Yoshimoto was flung to the surface of the road. Benten was like a mechanical weapon of war, crushing the Satomi's soldiers, destroying everything around her at random.

"D-Don't let her proceed!"

Yoshimoto crawled on the ground, crying out.

"Somebody stop this demon---!!"

***

"Shuryou!"

Hearing a call that sounded like a cry of grief, Kotarou spun around. Kotarou was beside Takaya, guarding him as the latter remained absorbed in the spiritual waveform synchronization. Covered in a mass of bruises, his subordinate dashed over. At the periphery of the promontory, the battle between the Satomi and the Fuuma had begun.

"What is it!"

"It really is the Satomi! The others are currently engaged in battle! However the enemy has an extremely ferocious high-ranking officer...!"

"You must not let them approach. Use whatever methods necessary to stop them, do not allow them to get close!"

"Shuryou!"

His voice was abruptly cut off by a miserable yell, blood splattered out of the subordinate in front of Kotarou before he collapsed to the ground. He had been shot in the back. Kotarou raised his guard, protecting Takaya. A black figure emerged from the depths of the underbrush.

"Who goes there?"

With sharp query, the enemy drew near. Accustomed to recognizing objects in the dark, Kotarou could clearly see the appearance of the one who approached.

"Uesugi Kagetora, are you here!"

Appearing from the shadow of the trees was Masaki Tokishige who had possessed the body of Yashiro. He was holding a pistol in his hand. Kotarou glared at the enemy, opening up a Goshinha, he stood in front of the muzzle of the gun, shielding Takaya.

"You're quite the runaway, Kagetora. Not even a wave of thought should have been able to penetrate that mansion's room. Looks like we have a traitor among us."

"..."

"I have received word that the Okutsunomiya's Benten has gone out of control. You're responsible for it aren't you, Kagetora. You're the one controlling Benten right." Masaki said, his body began to issue a spiritual air of aggression. "Move aside."

"I will not." Like a panther, Kotarou arched his back, his entire body adopted a fighting posture. Masaki concentrated his incantation in his hand.

"If that's the case, I'll just have to force you to step aside."

"..."

"I won't let you obstruct the 'Method of Connecting to Hell'! I will take your life! Kagetora!"

"!"

Kotarou gathered all of his strength from head to toe, confronting Masaki head-on. Masaki chanted the shingon of the Enma-ou, using it against Kotarou.

"Prison guards of Hell! Please lend me your assistance!"

Masaki threw a bundle of burning incense to the ground. Flames tore through the surroundings, the bundle of incense transformed into the figures of the ghost soldiers of Hell and attacked Kotarou.

"Ch!"

Kotarou fetched a single crystal ball from his garment and threw it into the sky.

"Arise, reijuu!"

Discharging a sound that resembled the burst of a gas gun, the crystal ball turned into a golden lion and tiger. The savage lion growled, attacking the ghost soldiers with sharp fangs that could pierce through blocks of iron. The large ghost soldiers with strong physiques challenged the lion directly, wanting to suppress it. While the two sides were engaged in battle, the tiger stood beside Takaya as though it was guarding him.

"Don't be so sure of yourself!"

"!"

Kotarou used his full strength to beat back Masaki Tokishige who was attempting to strike with incantations. The lion bit on the neck of the prison guard with its sharp teeth. The prison guard throttled the lion's neck, blood spurted out, a howl followed after. Both opponents toppled to the ground entangled with each other, and fell into the sea.

"Nargh!"

Masaki fell backwards as a result of sustaining a direct hit from Kotarou's incantation, falling backwards.

"Nnnh...!"

Kotarou's arms were grazed by the vacuum whirlwind that Masaki created, blood spurted out. Kotarou gritted his teeth to endure the pain, concentrating his spell in his hand, he attacked Masaki who was about to climb back to his feet. Masaki's body landed on the ground violently.

"Nnn wahh!"

Takaya was protected by the tiger, he consolidated his spirit with Benten's movement.
Benten continued to wreck the area with breathtaking strength.
As though he was witnessing it with his own eyes, Takaya was well aware of the incredibly chaotic situation. The place was on fire as the Satomi's soldiers continued to fight Benten. However Benten was simply like a weapon of destruction, creating large spheres of light in her hands, viciously casting them at the soldiers of the Satomi.

!

There was a blast, the ground was furrowed. The Okutsunomiya's Ryugu was reduced to debris within an instant, as though it had been wiped out from a bomb. Benten's hair thrashed about wildly as the explosive winds blew against her. She displayed a glamorous smiling face, her eyes glowed splendidly.

"Damn... it...!"

Miura Yoshimoto's ribs appeared to be broken. Blood was streaming out from the sides of his mouth, he could not even stand. He looked in horror at the surroundings that had become a scene straight out of Hell within a mere few minutes, shouting at Benten who was still walking towards the cave.

"You must not go there! You must not go to that place! You're not allowed to go there!"

"Miura Yoshimoto!"

"!"

A yell came from behind, Yoshimoto turned back. Ayako was standing there against the backdrop of flames. She had dealt with no small number of individuals. Panting, she knotted her fingers into the mudra of Bishamonten once again.

"This is the end!"

"Damn... Damn it, are you the Uesugi!"

"Joining the Satomi marks the end of your fortune. Now's the time for you to pay for your evil karma! Bai!"

Yoshimoto was externally bound, he could not budge. Neither could he move his fingers. Ayako concentrated her spirit and chanted the shingon.

"Namutobatsu Bishamonten! To subjugate the demons, grant me thy power!"

Yoshimoto's face was contorted, completely frozen in terror. Ayako mercilessly declared.

"Exorcise!"

Another white flash exploded in the Okutsunomiya.

***

"Why has it turned out this way! What happened!"

Benten's strength, previously flowing from the Okutsunomiya, had been severed without warning, the transmission had been lost in this way. Positioned in front of the altar, Satomi Yoshitaka grew confused. Due to the insufficient level of power, the figures of the ten kings of Hell that had temporarily appeared gradually faded away, finally disappearing as if they had been dispersed by the air.

"Why did Benten's power... Why is it gone!"

"My Lord!" The subordinate dashed over from behind, kneeling before Yoshitaka.

"What happened!"

"Benten's yorishiro at the Okutsunomiya..." The subordinate's voice was choking, he spluttered. "The yorishiro has gone berserk! She has broken away from Miura-sama's control, as though she is being controlled by someone else!"

"Controlled by someone else! Has the free might of the yorishiro been snatched away!"

"The yorishiro is making her way to the cave! If this continues, it would be too dangerous to remain, my Lord!"

"Ngh!" Yoshitaka stared reproachfully at the blazing fires of the homa, he roared bitterly. "I never expected to be hindered at this juncture, especially when we've come this far...!"

Yoshitaka snarled at his subordinate with an indignant face.

"Where is Makoto! Tell Makoto to go to the guards, don't let Benten approach the cave!"

"Understood!"

Watching the subordinate hurry away, Yoshitaka shuddered from anger and terror. If Benten's power could not be acquired, the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' would not succeed. It would come to nothing.

I won't just let it end like this...!

Yoshitaka clenched his fist, pounding against the rock strongly.

"I won't just let it end like this!"

The outside of the cave had become a battlefield.
Sustaining Benten's indiscriminate attack, the escarpment collapsed as the cliff was miserably shattered to pieces, the walkway was decimated to a hideous state. The area was strewn with the bodies of the Satomi's 'Yachou' whom had fallen, those who were still alive fled in every direction out of fear of Benten's might.

Reiko proceeded to the cave barefooted, the lapels of her white robes were open, her white skin appeared in the darkness, a tender beauty akin to the enshrined Myouon Benzaiten. However, her eyes alone glinted like red rubies, that countenance resembled a white serpent. Benzaiten was usually regarded as the goddess of fortune and kindness, but in truth she was a fierce god who possessed a brutish power. So much that Minamoto Yoritomo and other military leaders used to pray to her requesting the exorcism of enemies.

The seas were turbulent, conveying what sounded like the piercing cries of black-tailed gulls. With one glance at the sea, one could see numerous eyes twinkling with an orange radiance hovering on the surface. They were the mermaids of the Satomi. In the presence of the fierce enemy, they howled desperately wanting to drive her away. Reiko saw them and frowned. Seemingly finding them annoying, she once again concentrated her power in her hands, casting the bombs of light she created at the sea with full force.

Ka!

The spheres of light cut a straight path through the waves like a ballistic torpedo. In the instant the surface of the water glowed white, the entire sea was ignited in deep blue flames. The cries of the many mermaids resounded. The mermaids were burned by the fires that sped along the surface of the water, turning into ashes one after another.

"Wah... Waahhhhh!"

"We'll... we'll be killed.. Ahh--!"

Witnessing this, the Satomi's soldiers scrambled to escape from the cliff. Benzaiten did not even glance at them, she walked towards the cave with an expressionless face. Kaizaki's figure was nowhere to be seen.

"Ben...Benten is coming!"

The guards to the cave did not even have time to escape, they were struck down by Benten, crying out wretchedly as they fainted from pain. With her snow-white ankle, Reiko stepped onto the moistened rock and cement, heading inside the cave.

There was an ugly howl of grief.

"!"

Yoshitaka turned around in shock. The monks behind him had all been knocked unconscious. Opposite the fallen monks, was a flaming shadow like a white shimmer of hot air.
As if he had been struck in the back, Yoshitaka's face contorted intensely in terror.

"Ben... Benzaiten..."

The flame of the candle illuminated Reiko's face. She had snow-white skin that was nearly crystalline, scarlet eyes and lips. Those exquisite lips slowly opened.

[This is my domain...]

The melodious voice that pervaded the cave, caused Yoshitaka to gasp.

[Son of Man, leave this place.]

"Wh...What!" Yoshitaka bellowed deliriously with a pale face. "I will not leave this place! I have to open the path here! Open the path leading to Fuji!"

[Leave this place.]

Her voice was strict, without any leeway for compromise. Yoshitaka jumped up, shouting.

"Return to the Okutsunomiya! Then grant me your power! I summoned you for this very purpose! Come, please offer your strength for the achievement of the 'Method of Connecting to Hell'!"

A radiance with renewed magnificence erupted from Benzaiten's body. She probably understood that Yoshitaka would not leave. The deep blue flames entwined around her body burned more fiercely; her eyes, scarlet like the red lotus of Hell, stared straight at him.

"I...I won't let you do this! I won't let you use your powers to defeat me!"

Roar!

Benzaiten's mouth opened widely. That astonishing circular mass of power that she had stockpiled inside her body was cast out of her mouth at Yoshitaka.

"Nnhargh!"

Sustaining a direct hit from that golden circle of light, Yoshitaka was flung into the air, severely colliding against the rock wall behind him. Yoshitaka crumbled to the ground, Benten was relentless with him. She wrecked the homa-mandala to pieces, then accumulated her powers once again as she faced Yoshitaka. Blood was flowing out the corners of Yoshitaka's mouth, he groaned in a pained voice.

"Will not... I will not let you succeed! This level of defeat, I won't be finished because of this!"

Yoshitaka wound up the strength of his entire body. Benten opened her mouth widely. Another powerful golden circle of light was about to...!

"Our dream will not be extinguished in this way!"

!

The shout was dissolved, the sound of an amazing explosion resounded in the cave.
The bedrock collapsed together with the blast, an intense gust of wind swept through the cave before jetting to the outside.

"What!"

That earth-shattering blast caused an incredible earthquake. Ayako and the rest at the Okutsunomiya turned towards the direction in which the explosion originated.

"That was the...!"

"The cave over there, Kakizaki-sama!"

Benzaiten...!

She must have clashed with Yoshitaka in the cave. Ayako was startled, she could not help but run over.

"Nikaidou-san!"

Benzaiten's and Yoshitaka's powers had smashed directly into each other. As a result of the large impact, the rocks tumbled down, the bedrock crumbled as well, more than half of the cave had been buried. She ran over to inspect the situation, the vicinity of the cave was enshrouded in immense clouds of dust, the wall of the cliff had collapsed, the surrounding landscape had been completely modified.

The stairs leading to Chigo fuchi had been completely destroyed by Benzaiten. Wanting to dash down from there Ayako saw the figure of someone running across the rocks and exclaimed 'Ah'. That was...!

Satomi Yoshitaka!

"Wait! Yoshitaka!"

He fled from the buried cave by himself. Ayako chased after him in a frenzied manner, but Yoshitaka had boarded a small electric-powered boat tied to the harbor. This must have been prepared so that he could immediately escape in the case of any contingency.

"Wait!"

Ayako did not even get the chance to yell, the small electric-powered boat that carried Yoshitaka had set out to the night sea with great speed. Ayako threw an incantation at the small boat, however Yoshitaka had set up a Goshinha, it could not be destroyed.

"Damn it!"

Ayako clenched her fist and pounded on the railing, she was gnashing her teeth in anger. Yagami and the others caught up soon after.

"Kakizaki-sama...! Where is Yoshitaka!"

"He escaped. Get the 'Ken En' to chase him down at once! It's still not too late to capture him now!"

"Understood!"

Yagami promptly turned around and dashed down the road on which he came. Ayako turned towards the entombed cave.

Nikaidou-san...!

***

The blaring collapse of the cave shook the Shounan sea, so much that it was communicated to Koyurugimisaki.
Following that, a considerable length of time passed before Takaya moved again. He slowly knotted his fingers in the mudra in a calm manner.

"Gyashya Gyashya."

The chanting of the shingon allowed Benzaiten to return to the heavens.

"On Basara Bokisya Boku."

The kekkai was erased after he finished the chant, terminating the ritual.
Takaya exhaled deeply, opening his eyes. Once he was alert, he discovered that a tiger reijuu was standing beside him. It pressed the tip of its nose towards Takaya as if in appreciation of Takaya's efforts. Takaya smiled, caressing the tiger's head.

"Kagetora-sama."

Hearing a call from behind, Takaya turned around. Seeing the man standing there, Takaya's body unexpectedly stiffened in shock. The words he uttered were even more surprising.

"Kotarou...!"

"!"

Kotarou gasped. Takaya widened his eyes.

"Why are you...!"

His sentence broke off halfway as Takaya abruptly came back to his senses. He had realized that 'the person he believed to be Kotarou in that instant was in fact Naoe'. Looking at Kotarou whose expression had tensed, Takaya covered his mouth with his hand, with an ambivalent appearance he began to explain himself.

"Ah... no, what's with me..."

"Kagetora-sama."

"My eyes went fuzzy for a second. Sorry, Naoe."

Takaya uttered, he rubbed his eyes as though nothing had happened.
Kotarou grew solemn.

"..."

"? What's that?"

A man laid fallen beside Kotarou's feet. Takaya had seen his face before. He was a member of Kyoutake real estate, a man called Yashiro who was connected to Kaizaki.
But Takaya immediately understood the situation.

"Did you kill him?"

"Yes. The hyouza should be unaffected."

"I see." Takaya replied, sighing deeply. "Although Yoshitaka escaped, Haruie and the others are now pursuing him. He would probably be caught soon. Miura Yoshimoto has been exorcised. Looks like we managed to stop the curse."

"..."

"Thanks for the effort."

Hearing Takaya's words, Kotarou revealed a complicated expression. Takaya hugged the tiger, burying his face into its fur as though he was exhausted, but he felt a sense of accomplishment from successfully thwarting the 'Method of Connecting to Hell', hence his expression was extremely calm. Kotarou squinted slightly, he said in a deep voice.

"Your leadership abilities are truly exemplary, you have your subordinate's utmost admiration. Kagetora-sama."

Hearing 'Naoe's' words, Takaya lowered his gaze a little.

***

The small electric-powered boat carrying Yoshitaka drifted to the coast of Kayasaki. Ayako's incantation had damaged the boat slightly. The engine had stopped working along the way. It was finally pushed to shore by the waves.

"Damn it..."

Yoshitaka's entire body was drenched in seawater, he dragged his wounded body out and stepped onto the beach. Blood and seawater dripped onto the sand, contaminating it. Yoshitaka's breathing was in disorder as he groaned miserably.

"This sort of... matter... Definitely won't be finished... because of this..."

Sensing that there was someone around, Yoshitaka lifted his head in shock. As though he had been waiting for Yoshitaka, a man was standing there. Once he saw that face, Yoshitaka's face filled with joy.

"Makoto...!"

Kaizaki Makoto was standing there. He was wearing a black cashmere coat over his black Western-styled suit, he gazed at Yoshitaka with a steady expression in his eyes.

"What have you been doing all this time! Why did you leave the yorishiro without doing anything! I was relying on your strength, a guy with this level of ability...!"

His sentence trailed off midway, Yoshitaka's back trembled from apprehension. There was a certain austerity in Kaizaki's eyes that Yoshitaka had never seen before, this made him feel afraid. Kaizaki would never exhibit this sort of expression in front of Yoshitaka.

"Makoto... Makoto..., you..."

"It seems like the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' has failed."

Kaizaki's cold voice froze Yoshitaka's entire body. This was not the usual Kaizaki. This was not the obedient and faithful Kaizaki Makoto that he knew.

"I have given you a taste of betrayal at the very end, I am truly sorry." Kaizaki uttered in an indifferent voice. "I wanted to know the true objective of your attempt, Satomi-dono. I wanted to find out exactly what you people were doing for the Oda. However your strength was not good enough. The 'Method of Connecting to Hell', its true nature is not something as extraordinary as a path leading to Hell."

"You... what are..."

"I still have one more thing to ask you. Yoshitaka-dono." Kaizaki calmly took off his glasses, hanging them in his breast pocket. "Oda Nobunaga-kou's whereabouts."

"Don't tell me you..."

Yoshitaka gulped. He stared wide-eyed with an incredulous expression so much that his eyes were practically about to crack. He looked at Kaizaki as cold sweat streamed down his body.

"Could you please tell me this?" Kaizaki asked in a low voice as though he was threatening him. "Where is Nobunaga-kou currently situated at? What is he doing there?"

"I... I don't know!"

"It's impossible for you to be unaware of this, right? The Oda's directives and information have all been conveyed to you. The Oda were the ones who told you about the 'Method of Connecting to Hell', right?"

"I really don't know! Apart from Hayashi Michimasa-dono, we had no way of acquiring contact with the Oda! I have not met Nobunaga-kou once! As for his whereabouts, I absolutely don't...!"

"You don't know it?" Kaizaki asked coolly. As though he was sorry that this had to happen, he continued with a deep, clear voice. "Then, you are no longer useful."

"What is going on! Who are you really, Makoto! You are my faithful descendant right! Don't tell me you remained by my side for the purpose of spying on us? You're not Makoto are you! Didn't you wish to join me as individuals who could stand up to the Oda and the Takeda, and acquire the Kanto region together!"

Kaizaki looked at Yoshitaka with pity. Yoshitaka stared at Kaizaki with a pleading expression.

"If I was allowed do that, I would have liked to give you a helping hand. Yoshitaka-sama."

"Makoto...!"

"To the extent of allowing your soul to remain. I understand that intense feeling of longing of yours very well. There is no place to vent resentment stemming from lack of power. No matter how much you pursue it, you can never come close. You can never obtain it."

Second rates, third rates, mediocrity... He could not escape from these denominations. In order to reach the highest position, no matter how much he bled or toiled, no matter how much he had to sacrifice his own life in his striving, he was still lacking in some form of decisiveness that thus obstructed his goal of reaching that place. He lacked a certain determination that was needed to reach that place. Even if he understood this, the luck, ability and originality that he could not obtain regardless of what he did...

"If I were to concede to the fact that this standing befits my abilities and just give up, there wouldn't be anymore suffering. However I cannot abandon it as I've seen the one at the very peak. That is why I struggle. We so-called ordinary people... This dark precipitate that cannot be raised to any higher level..."

"..."

"Because of your attachment to it, you have remain in this world right."

Yoshitaka was such a person. The Hojo, the Takeda, the Uesugi, the Oda... All of them were pursuing a status that was worthy of themselves, however, at the very end, they had entered the coffin in death before their hopes came to realization. Indeed, Yoshitaka was not one without any merits. His people acknowledged him as well. But he could not forgive himself for just dying in this way.
In order to allow those so-called ordinary sediments to sublimate, they were left in this world. However they still could not achieve it.

Kaizaki's expression grew calm. He understood Yoshitaka's pain. There was an exceedingly sincere emotion in his eyes, he looked at Yoshitaka with sympathy.
Hearing the sound of the great waves, Kaizaki uttered.

"Despite the pain,"

"..."

"We can only accept it."

Tears welled up in Yoshitaka's eyes. Could Yoshitaka feel a sentiment identical to his own from Kaizaki's body, a breath that had the same sorrow?
Kaizaki slowly knotted his fingers into the mudra. That was indeed the same mudra that Takaya and the others used, the mudra of Bishamonten.

"Bai!"

Yoshitaka's body convulsed, he could not move. Kaizaki chanted the shingon in a calm and downcast voice.

"Noumakusamanda Bodanan Baishiramandaya Sowaka. --Namutobatsu Bishamonten."

Yoshitaka did not resist. Kaizaki concentrated his spirit in the mudra. Holding his fingers in the shushi of Bishamonten, he chanted.

"To subjugate the demons, grant me thy power."

Beautiful rays of light slowly accumulated in the mudra. Yoshitaka listened to Kaizaki's voice as he looked up at the sky. Kaizaki released the sphere of light gathered in his hands.

"Exorcise!"

A pure white radiance diffused out from the coastal region, just like the flow of the galaxy, illuminating the waves to a silver white.

Tatsumi Yoshitsugu dropped onto the silent sandy beach.
Attired in a hat and a windbreaker, Hakkai came to Kaizaki's side as the latter stood gazing at the sea. Kaizaki did not turn around, he asked.

"How is the situation at Fujinomiya?"

"A complete success. Satomi Yoshiyori has been exorcised by Yasuda-dono."

"I see."

After Kaizaki replied, he grew silent. Takaya and the others had acted according to what they had hoped for. Although Nobunaga's whereabouts remained unknown, they had thwarted the Satomi's scheme. Even though the city councilor, Gotou, was sacrificed in this incident, at the very least they had minimized the overall amount of harm.

The sound of the waves echoed rhythmically on the wintry coast. It suddenly occurred to Kaizaki that this body of water was the Sagami sea of Kagetora's homeland, he cast his line of sight towards the coastline of a faraway region. -- Was Odawara in that place?

"..." After that period of silence, Kaizaki said to Hakkai. "I am a little tired. I shall let Kaizaki return to the apartment then terminate the synchronization. I will leave the following matters to you."

"Understood. Can you not use this person a second time?"

"No, let me make use of him for a little longer. Although I feel sorry for doing this to him, his 'power' is particularly outstanding. This strength can be exploited. ...Return to Nikko after you are finished with the post-affairs. I will leave that in your care."

"Understood!"

Kaizaki gazed at Koyurugimisaki once again. There was no hint of what he was thinking, he turned on his heels, making his way to the road from the beach.
Hakkai gazed at his back.

The waves of Shounan were as serene as before, calmly beating up the night beach.

At this moment, something strange was occurring in another location.
A powerful kekkai had been installed over the area of Fujinomiya city's Asama Grand Shrine in the Shizuoka prefecture during the afternoon. The subordinates of the Satomi clan had sealed off the 139 national highway that bordered the Fujinomiya railway station, vehicles were no longer allowed through, the businesses in the area had also been halted, it was as though the entire city had been placed under martial law, the place was immersed in silence.

Satomi Yoshiyori arrived at the Asama Grand Shrine at about 5 o'clock in the afternoon. The Satomi-possessed monks and Shinto priests had nearly completed the preparations for the curse in the shrine's compounds.
The Asama Grand Shrine was where offerings were made to the Asama Daimyojin with the spiritual peak of Mt. Fuji as the goshintai -- the shrine where Konohana-Sakuya-hime had put her life at stake, the headquarters for more than 1,300 Asama shrines nationwide. It was also the oldest shrine in the region south of Tokyo on the eastern side of Japan, having been revered by the imperial household and the samurai since the ancient times. On the summit of Mt. Fuji was the Okumiya shrine, positioned as the main shrine of Fujinomiya from time immemorial, in other words, the starting point when one ascends Mt. Fuji for worship. The shrine could be regarded as the center of the doctrine surrounding Mt. Fuji.

The Satomi had occupied this place in order to turn this shrine into the 'Night Devil Path', the entrance of the tunnel leading to Enoshima.
After the sky darkened with the fall of night, bonfires were ignited throughout the enclosure, entry was prohibited except to those associated with the Satomi. The periphery of the shrine was stringently guarded by policemen possessed by the 'Yachou' of the Satomi.
As the curse was about to begin, the security at the inner sanctuary and the Wakutama pond on the right side were especially tight, no outsiders could enter.

"How problematic, Satomi-aniki."

Chiaki Shuuhei was hiding behind the cluster of trees in a small hillock called Kandachi-yama to the rear of the main shrine, watching the steady progress of the preparations, he could not help but click his tongue in contempt. He removed the uniform from the policeman, disguising himself he finally succeeded in infiltrating the compounds, however no one was allowed into the most crucial areas, that is the inner sanctuary and Wakutama pond, save for the monks and Shinto priests.

"I seriously don't know where's the best place to start hacking my way in."

Chiaki exposed an annoyed expression.
The Mizuya shrine near the edge of the Wakutama pond and the large altar for the spell set up under the rattan shed in front of them in particular, were surrounded by monks with a solemn expression. For this reason, he could not get close.

The Wakutama pond had been designated as a unique natural treasure as it would fill with water from the thawed snow of Mt. Fuji permeating into the subterranean. The temperature of the water was 13°C, the standard amount of water that gushed in every second was 3.6 thousand litres without much variation. When ascending Mt. Fuji for worship, it was the usual practice for the worshippers to first cleanse their bodies here before resuming their climb up the mountain.

"That pond will be turned into the entrance of the 'Night Devil Path'."

Irobe Katsunaga said, standing beside Chiaki.

"It leads to the entrance of the subterranean tunnel of Enoshima's fuuketsu. The Oda's 'Yachou' leaving for Enoshima will enter this pond here."

"Why would those Satomi brats want to make this pond the entrance?"

"I fear it may be because, as they carry out the curse to completion, they intend to borrow the spiritual might of Mt. Fuji - the divine power of Konohana-Sakuya-hime perhaps. The ethereal water here contains a good deal of Fuji's spiritual strength, unexpectedly serving as a convenient resource for exploitation in the effectuation of the curse."

In order to achieve the 'Method of Connecting to Hell', a large amount of spiritual energy was required. If they wanted to put this into effect by themselves, it would probably be impossible unless they possessed the same level of spiritual power as Koubou 'Kukai' Daishi. The Satomi had decided that they would not be able to accomplish the curse by relying on their own strength therefore they intended to borrow Benzaiten's power at Enoshima and on the other side of the entrance, the spiritual might of Fuji's Asama Grand Shrine.

"In that legend, although Koubou Daishi opened the channel leading to Hell, the Night Devil Path was actually opened in Narusawa's ice cave, from there he beckoned the gods of Fuji to Enoshima. Furthermore, after Koubou Daishi, there was only one other person who managed to implement the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' in Enoshima's cave."

That person was the Nichiren holy priest. The holy priest had opened a Night Devil Path that led to Mt. Minobu from the cave. Opening a Night Devil Path leading from the cave to Mt. Minobu, was the near equivalent of constructing a road from Mt. Fuji's summit all the way down to sea level. The Night Devil Path leading to the spiritual summit of Mt. Minobu opened by the holy priest, relayed the energy generated by the underground magma activity of Mt. Fuji, causing it to flow up to Mt. Minobu and accumulate over there. In other words, the holy priest used the Night Devil Path as a means of transport. During Nichiren's famous 'Tatsu-no-kuchi religious persecution', the beam of light that shot from Enoshima and attacked the persecutors, was in fact the divine light of Mt. Minobu that had traveled via the Night Devil Path. However, owing to this incident, the existence of the Night Devil Path was then exposed, the Bakufu ordered the Shinto priests of Enoshima shrine to use the vajra to seal off the fuuketsu. With the vajra planted, the Night Devil Path that was temporarily opened was thereby annihilated.
No one has opened the Night Devil Path at Enoshima ever since.

"So this time they're planning to connect from Fujinomiya? But it's strange. Whether it's Mt. Minobu or Narasawa's ice cave, both of them are located within the same vicinity. Is there a reason for this?"

"Perhaps there is some gravitational force in this area that can easily draw open the Night Devil Path."

"Is there a source for this gravitational force? Is it Mt. Fuji?"

"I don't know. ...Nonetheless, it's an incidental convenience to the Oda."

Chiaki paid attention to the activity of the monks as he gazed doubtfully at Irobe's expression. Although Chiaki had followed Irobe to exorcise Yoshiyori, his suspicion of Irobe and the others had not disappeared. -- Such exhaustive information, how on earth did they gather this?

Guess I'll wait until this matter is done before asking again...

Chiaki forcefully changed his mood, he looked towards the Wakutama pond together with Irobe.

"Let's split up." Chiaki uttered in a low voice. "I've an idea."

"What do you plan to do?"

"Looking at these guards, there's no way we can defeat them with just the two us right. I'm going to call reinforcements. I saw something good on the way here just now. Right in the center of the river connected to this pond is an Itsukushima shrine."

"Itsukushima shrine? What do you have in mind?"

"I'm calling the tengu over."

Chiaki replied, he took out a small koppa shin from his waist pocket. With careful scrutiny, one could tell that it was the koppa shin that Takaya had given him to present to the tengu at Misen's Sanki temple during the battle at Itsukushima.

"After that incident, the tengu boss residing in Itsukushima and I have become pretty friendly. I'll call upon the deities of Itsukushima, and summon Tarobou and the rest over."

"You want the tengu to attack from the outside?"

"That's right."

Chiaki took out the revolver that he had taken together with the police uniform.

"Calling the tengu will take some time. Don't do anything to the Satomi for now, just wait. If the tengu come, we'll take advantage of the chaos to exorcise Yoshiyori."

Irobe nodded. After Chiaki nodded in reply, he disappeared behind Kandachi-yama with a 'Bye'.

***

"We were waiting for your mount to arrive, Yoshiyori-sama."

The subordinate who had arrived earlier at Fujinomiya, Masaki Tokitada, was waiting for Satomi Yoshiyori, who appeared in the prayer hall changed into white robes after completing the purification rites at the Wakutama pond.
He was Tokishige's younger brother.

"Yeah. It's finally about to begin."

"Yes!"

Yoshiyori had a complacent look on his face as though he had already completed the Esoteric rituals, wearing an extravagant smile, he sat on the prepared seat arrogantly.

"If so many Shinto priests and monks have gathered here, there shouldn't be anything to be afraid of. Would all of you please put forth your best efforts for me. That would include you, Tokitada."

"..."

"If you manage this well, I may consider forgiving you for your act of betrayal in relying on the Hojo for help in your previous life. Be sure to do your best."

Tokitada's expression became somewhat stiff. Tokitada had sought asylum from the Hojo after the second Battle of Konodai. During his later years, he returned to the Satomi once again. But Tokitada's purpose in following the Satomi after his resurrection was to obtain that formidable backing of the Oda --. However this objective of his was currently concealed, he pretended to have the utmost loyalty to the Satomi.

"Understood! Masaki Tokitada is willing to spare no effort in the performance of my duty to Yoshiyori-sama."

"Mmm."

Yoshiyori felt extremely rejuvenated. There was an air of complacency in his expression, as though he already had the world at his feet. He must have felt rather happy that his father had entrusted him with the mission at Fujinomiya. Apparently, owing to the support from the large amount of troops under his command, it made him feel that his own deficiencies in his ability was nothing to be worried about.

"After it's opened, we shall witness Nobunaga-sama's army enter the Wakutama pond right. Tokitada, I will leave the inner sanctuary to you. I shall be in charge of Wakutama pond. Once you receive the power of the Asama Daimyojin, transfer it to me over here. The great 'Method of Connecting to Hell' is about to start."

***

The tension in the precinct increased. About 20 Shinto priests had gathered inside the prayer hall, under Masaki Tokitada's directions they were to accept the divine might of Asama Daimyojin, conduct a conferring ritual and divert it to Yoshiyori. This did not require a living yorishirou like Benzaiten. The powers would directly emerge in the ethereal water of the Wakutama pond.
Outside, the Wakutama pond was surrounded by about 50 monks, waiting for Yoshiyori to preside over the base of the enchantment.

Midnight.

Yoshiyori appeared at the eastern door, he sat on the base of the enchantment that had been set up in the Mizuya shrine.

It's starting.

Irobe was observing the situation from the cluster of trees at Kandachi-yama. There was still no sign of activity from Chiaki's side. Security was rather tight, could it be that Chiaki was having difficulty in approaching his destination?

Hurry, Nagahide...

At this moment, Chiaki was at the edge of the Kandagawa river, downstream of Wakutama pond.

This place should suffice.

In order to get close to the Itsukushima shrine on the sandbank, he had no choice but to draw the enemy's attention to another place. Chiaki took out a golden chakra from his pocket. It was a type of ritual implement in Esoteric Buddhism. After taking out a small bottle filled with holy oil, he poured it over the chakra and used a lighter to set it on fire.

"On Asanmagini Un Hatta, On Asanmagini Un Hatta."

Once he chanted the shingon of the Diamond-Blaze, the holy oil kindled into flames that turned violet, majestically bursting in sparks as it burned. Chiaki gripped the chakra and threw it fiercely into the air, chanting the Heavy-Carriage shingon.

"On Torotoro Un!"

The chakra left a trail of fire as it shot into the sky in a curved trajectory. After dividing into two at the highest point, it gave off the sound of an intense explosion together with an eruption of plasma, the kekkai issued a groan.

"What!"

The soldiers on guard looked at the sky in shock. Because of the sudden disturbance, the soldiers grew flustered.

"Enemy attack! Someone is attacking!"

"Over there! Alert the warning system!"

This time it's here...!

Chiaki had propelled the chakra towards the east at great speed. He immediately jumped under the Kandagawa bridge. The blazing streak bolted down its path, exploding not long after.

"What happened!"

"Intruders! Intruders here!"

"Find them! There are intruders!"

The surroundings sank into utter chaos, the guard soldiers dashed about in panic due to the recurrent sounds of explosions. Chiaki ran along Kandagawa, the nearby guard soldier facing the Itsukushima shrine on the sandbank yelled out.

"The intruders want to destroy the kekkai! Leave this area to me, you people hurry over there! Stop the intruders!"

The Satomi's soldiers were extremely alarmed as a result of the unexpected tumult, clamoring as they dashed towards the areas where the blasts came from. Chiaki dealt the soldiers that remained behind with external binds one after another. After binding them, he ran towards the front of the small shrine structure. He fetched out the koppa shin and placed it before the shrine.

"Come on now, I'm counting on you goddesses."

***

The Esoteric rituals had begun at Wakutama pond. Beside the bonfire, the 50 monks centered around the lake chanted the Dasa-raja-dhamma. The flames of the bonfire were reflected on the ethereal, crystalline surface of the pond. Satomi Yoshiyori, attired in white robes, was seated on the homa-mandala (fire altar) placed in front of the Mizuya shrine, chanting the shingon of the Enma with full concentration.
Elsewhere, Masaki Tokitada was steadily conducting the Asama Daimyojin conferment method inside the inner sanctuary.

Chiaki's diversionary tactic did not manage to distract the concentration of those executing the curse. The ones in uproar were the guard soldiers instead. The outside was a scene of chaos, the guard soldiers were hollering and dashing all over the place in a haphazard fashion.
About 30 minutes passed by.
Irobe kept to his position and did not move into action, he gazed at the Wakutama pond. In that moment, there was an unusual change in the pond. A blood-red coloration slowly began to stain the transparent surface of the water that reflected the bonfire.

What...!

In the wake of the chanting of the Sutra of the Ten Kings and the increasing tension, the red lotus blaze reflected on the water surface eventually enlarged. Projected over there were the ugly prison guards of Hell with reddish or perhaps greenish skin, together with the miserable appearance of those they were responsible for punishing.

Is this... the image of Hell!

The surface of the Wakutama pond reflected that image like a mirror. This could be regarded as one of the scenes from the chart of the underworld. The 'Method of Connecting to Hell' relied on the strength of the Enma-ou for the implementation of the curse. The holy water of Fuji and the power of the Enma-ou reacted with each other, casting the various scenes in Hell that were described in the Sutra of the Ten Kings onto the water surface. It was imply like a jouhari mirror.
Irobe gulped as a result of that astonishing sight.

The Gozu Rasetsu and the Mezu Rasetsu prison guards punished the people who had fallen into hell. People whose limbs were severed on the blazing iron panel, people whose bodies were bound tightly by ropes made of heated iron, people whose arms and legs were gnawed by beasts, people whose charred skins were peeled off, people who were forced to drink boiling liquids, people whose physical bodies were being ground, people who suffered from 440 types of sicknesses... However, even if they were killed, they would recover with the blowing of the wind, and be massacred once again. As though time did not exist, they were forced to bear with this dizzying suffering for the endless months and years.
Irobe felt nauseated at the sight of this excessive cruelty, he resisted the urge to vomit, staring at the image on the water surface as though possessed.

The hell of repeated resuscitation (Sājīva), the hell of black ropes (Kālasütra), the crammed hell (Sāghāta), the hell of wailing (Raurava), the hell of great wailing (Mahāraurava), the hell of fiery heat (Tāpana), the hell of great heat (Pratāpana), the hell of no interval (Avīci)... The eight miserable scenes of Hell were reflected in succession following the implementation of the Sutra of the Ten Kings. The depth of the sins of the dead committed during their lives were judged in the hall of the Enma-ou by the ten underworld magistrates. Based on their sins they would fall into the corresponding types of hell, then endure their painful sentence for an unknown length of time.

This is...

Irobe gasped, forgetting his own mission, his line of sight was fixed on the reflected image. It was said that the flames of Hell's fires combusted the evil karma of the people. If that was the case, then what was this ominous scarlet red? What was this intense raging fire? Irobe felt like he could see the underworld as he pried into the very depths of the pond's holy water, his face turned pale. He could not help but seriously wonder, could this world be truly connected to Hell if this curse were to be effectuated by someone powerful? At this moment,

Wah!

An exceptionally resounding roar came from the south.

"!"

He turned and looked up, there was a large group of dark objects in the sky, a bird-like colony was flying towards this place. Large birds. That was the...!

They are the tengu!

Rushing forth from the western sky was a black colony of several hundreds and thousands, it was the tengu flock that Chiaki had summoned. Flying ahead of them were two tengu with especially large bodies. Leading the tengu over were Itsukishima's Tarobou and Jirobou.

"Tengu!"

"The tengu are flying over!"

Hearing the sound of flapping wings in the night sky akin to the crashing of great waves, the guard soldiers sank into a state of utter panic. Then the tengu began their vicious assault of the Asama Grand Shrine that had been covered with a kekkai.

"What is going on with that flock of tengu!"

"Shoot them down! Secure the kekkai!"

In order to destroy the kekkai, the flock of tengu relentlessly unfolded their wings. The several thousands of feathers hardened, turning into missiles that were launched in attack. The kekkai sustained the tengu's overwhelming aggression, intense plasma erupted into the sky.

"Return the attack! Don't retreat!"

"Who is responsible for this! What is the reason those tengu are...!"

The guard soldiers scattered across the area, facing the swelling numbers of the tengu, they attacked them with the 'Nen Nami' however there did not seem to be any effect. Seeing this weakness in the enemy, Irobe, following his instructions, dashed towards the prayer hall.

!

Immediately after Irobe had crossed over to the inner side of the enclosure of the inner sanctuary there was an explosion. The tengu had finally broken through the kekkai of the Asama Grand Shrine. Additionally, a huge demon-like figure appeared directly above the single torii.
It was the God of Lightning. It must have been beckoned by Chiaki by means of the koppa shin. The God of Lightning abruptly opened its large mouth containing sharp pointed teeth, took an incredibly deep breath of air, faced the hole in the kekkai that the tengu had made, and ejected a white lumophore from its mouth powerfully.

Ka!

The entire region was enclosed in white light. Blast waves broke out, the ground shook fiercely, white rays of light were emitted from the entire body of the semicircular kekkai. Then, in the next moment, the curtains of the kekkai gradually disappeared like the way sweet syrup melted. The power of the tengu and the God of Lightning had finally demolished the kekkai.

"W-What!"

Yoshiyori, near the Wakutama pond, was forced to discontinue the curse as a result of this unexpected situation. The monks were extremely alarmed by the attack, halting the reading of their scriptures. The image of Hell reflected on the water surface of the Wakutama pond gradually faded away as well.

"What's going on! What happened!"

"Reporting back, my lord!"

Seeing the curse discontinued, his subordinate ran to Yoshiyori's side to make his report.

"Apparently someone summoned the tengu! We have been attacked, the kekkai has been destroyed!"

"What did you say! Re-install the kekkai at once! Who the hell is responsible for this!"

"That would be.... Yarghh!"

The flock of tengu invaded the area in a collective manner, moving in from where the kekkai once stood. The feather missiles of the tengu rained down from the sky, striking the guard soldiers and monks one after another. An astonishing explosion resounded, the homa-mandala was promptly destroyed. The people scattered in all directions in their attempts to escape, crying out or bellowing loudly. In an instant, a huge frenzy permeated the area around the Wakutama pond.

"Don't run! All of you, return fire at the tengu! Don't abandon your duties, drive them away!"

Yoshiyori's voice disappeared into the mass of chaos. The countless tengu that covered the entire sky attacked from above, striking with feather missiles like rain. The feathers took shape from their spiritual strength, they would not harm the physical torso but merely pierce through the spiritual body. This would lethally injure the spiritual body.

"My lord! Please escape from the shrine! Please seek refuge for the time being!"

Urged by his subordinate, Yoshiyori could not help but abandon the homa-mandala, dashing into Mizuya shrine.

At this moment, the situation in the prayer hall was also one of panic. Irobe had hacked his way into that place by himself where Masaki Tokitada was carrying out the conferment ritual. In order to flatten no less than 50 Shinto priests and guards, he made use of the Propelling Characters technique that he was expert in. This involved drawing special kuji in the air to launch at his opponents, relying on the spiritual solidification of the figures beckoned and their discharging abilities.

The foreheads of the Shinto priests were struck with the pattern of the kuji, one by one they fell to the floor. Upon receiving this summoned character, the solidified spiritual body would be turned into a cracked piece of membrane that would immediately part the forehead of the hyouza, and thus be discharged from there. Several hardened soul pieces fell to the ground, bursting out in blue flames.

"Who are you!"

Tokitada, seated in front of the divine altar, immediately drew out the divine sword by his side in response to this sudden attack. However Irobe was not so foolish as to engage in friendly chat with the enemy. He attacked without a word, after crushing the guards next to Tokitada with the 'Ressa Choubuku', he dealt Tokitada with an external bind.

"Bai!"

"Nnhh...!"

Tokitada, wanting to slaughter the assassin, was bound externally in this way with his broadsword half lifted. Irobe knotted his fingers firmly into the mudra of Bishamonten, and chanted the shingon loudly.

"Noumakusamanda Bodanan Baishiramandaya Sowaka."

Tokitada, wanting to resist, struggled. However his body could not move as though it was frozen.

"Damn... it, are you... the Uesugi...!"

Irobe's eyes glinted sharply, he declared loudly in the prayer hall.

"Namutobatsu Bishamonten! To subjugate the demons, grant me thy strength!"

"Damn it...! Asama Daimyojin!" Tokitada cried out in a grieving manner. "Please help me! Banish this violent disciple from the precincts of the Shinto shrine!"

"Looks like your strength is rather lacking." Irobe saw that there was not a single reaction to Tokitada's surroundings, he smiled arrogantly. "The daimyojin will only lend its power to people with a firm conviction. A disciple who professes devotion only when in trouble, to the extent of seeking intensive care from the daimyojin, this is truly a case of overestimating your own limited strength."

"Damn you...!"

Even though Tokitada snarled, he still had no way of severing the force of the external bind. Irobe looked reproachfully at the other once again, set his mudra, and waited for his exorcism power to reach its brink. Tokitada's expression was loaded with fear of death, he recklessly began to cry out in dissatisfaction. Irobe firmly maintained the external bind, after taking a deep breath, along with the final declaration, he liberated his powers at one go.

"Exorcise!"

A pure, white radiance exploded in the center of the prayer hall.

After the monks were all defeated, the tengu began to invade the Mizuya shrine. Yoshiyori, who was hiding inside that shrine, established a Goshinha and desperately fought back, however his resistance was futile in the face of the concentrated attack from the swarm of tengu.

"Wargghh!"

Not long after, the shrine was destroyed in a blast. Yoshiyori huddled up, protecting his body. The entire shrine had been reduced to splinters of wood, exposing Yoshiyori's body to the outside. He crawled forwards wanting to escape, however his body was instantly anchored with an external bind and could not move.

"Wah!"

"Looking good over there, young master."

After the tengu left the sky, the figure of a person appeared beneath the rattan shed.
It was Chiaki Shuuhei.
He had smoothly crushed the enemy and returned to this place just a moment ago. Chiaki's arms were folded across his chest, looking over at Yoshiyori, trembling in terror from having sustained an external bind in the center of the ruins of the shrine, and went "Hmph".

"What an easy finish, Satomi Yoshiyori. And here I was thinking you'd be someone with a little more backbone, my mistake for overestimating you."

"Who...Who are you people! Are you from the Takeda!"

"I was told that you captured our general. Kindly allow me to express my thanks."

Yoshiyori's face changed to a shade of pale white. He realized that the people who had showed up were from the Uesugi clan.

"Kage...Kagetora's subordinates, the Uesugi Yashashuu? How did you know Kagetora was in our hands...!"

Yoshiyori, originally in fear, stared at Chiaki with a sharp, opposing expression in his eyes all of a sudden, as though he had seen through something.

"Hmph. If you know about that then so be it. But you Yashashuu, even if you have destroyed the altar at Fujinomiya, if the curse at Enoshima is completed nothing would have changed. The two locations are joined in the invocation as auxiliaries. I'm just an auxiliary for the curse. What a pity, Uesugi. The curse would be still be accomplished even if it's solely carried at Enoshima. As long as there's someone powerful like my father, Satomi Yoshitaka, presiding over the enchantment!"

"Ha. Provided Satomi Yoshitaka possesses the sort of power that Koubou Daishi had."

Hearing Chiaki mockingly suggest that it was impossible for Yoshitaka to have that level of power, Yoshiyori grimaced in discontent, he retorted angrily.

"If one person isn't enough, then two people might be able to achieve it."

"What?"

"We have a powerful support. A descendant of our Satomi clan. As long as he assists us, we can achieve Koubou Daishi's level of... no, a power even greater than his!"

"What...? Your descendant you say!"

Although praising Makoto was not Yoshiyori's original intention, he had nothing else to rely on apart from this. Seeing Chiaki grow anxious, Yoshiyori laughed elatedly.

"The 'Method of Connecting to Hell' will definitely succeed. Whatever methods you people use to hinder us, it will be useless, useless! We've won!"

As though he was stubbornly refusing to admit defeat, Yoshiyori continued to laugh out loud. Was it because he felt displeased from that sort of laughter? Chiaki concentrated the power in his mudra, increasing the strength of the external bind.

"I shall throw you into that world while you're laughing in this way then."

"Nnn... Nyahhh! Stop...!!"

"You just wait diligently for your old man to open the road leading back from Hell."

After saying this disdainfully, Chiaki began to chant the shingon slowly. Yoshiyori fiercely resisted, but no matter how much he struggled he could not break free from the external bind. If Yoshiyori had the power to undo the external bind, he probably would not have allowed the altar be destroyed so easily.

"Namutobatsu Bishamonten! To subjugate the demons, grant me thy power!"

A white, dazzling radiance assembled rapidly above the fingers knotted in the mudra. The density of the rays gradually increased, turning into a sphere of energy. Chiaki looked coldly at Yoshiyori, who was desperately calling out his father's name, and delivered the oath.

"Exorcise!"

The beautiful surface of the Wakutama pond reflected the exploding rays of light, glinting like a clear mirror, emitting a flare at the night sky like a spotlight.

Father!

The final cry remained, Yoshiyori had been engulfed by the fierce radiance.
The surface of the Wakutama pond that had been projecting images of hell reverted to the reflection of the dark night sky, the surroundings were once again enveloped in its former serenity. The shrine, where the ritual of the dead was about to be implemented, returned to its solemn silence as though nothing had happened.

***

At this moment, the Esoteric rituals at Enoshima had also begun.
Gray clouds and mist accumulated, the dark image of the islands of Enoshima appeared beneath the glowing night sky. The street lamps on the 134 national highway extended across the faraway Sagamiwan. A wind blew over Koyurugimisaki.

Takaya was seated cross-legged in the center of the lookout tower, having begun his synchronization with the waveform of the gohou douji. He had attached a gohou douji close to Nikaidou Reiko's body. From a spiritual perspective, it was a form of dependency. Takaya would be able to bring the power of Benzaiten when she descends into Reiko's body under his own control via the gohou douji. In other words, Takaya was planning to seize the power of Benzaiten, originally intended for the Satomi, from their side, then take the additional step of utilizing it to stop the curse. Takaya himself could not release any incantations at the moment. Neither could he employ his powers of exorcism using this physical body. At present, he could only depend on spiritual resonance techniques such as wave thoughts or waveform synchronization.

Placed in front of Takaya was the sacred mirror of the shrine's shintai. All that the gohou douji saw would be reflected here, a third party could also view it.
Kotarou followed closely behind Takaya, from the side he watched the appearance of Takaya unifying his spirit.

An astonishing power of concentration. Kotarou had always marveled at this ability of his. Such a perfect skill in concentration that it made one feel that he was worthy of being the general of the Uesugi. Within an extremely short frame of time, Takaya could accomplish exceedingly tenuous and meticulous tasks like synchronizations with other spiritual waveforms. There were not many people capable of this method, less than ten people at the most in Yami Sengoku.
Synchronizing with a spiritual waveform was that difficult a task. Not even Ayako who had the best spiritual examination abilities could achieve a complete spiritual waveform synchronization. Among the Yashashuu, perhaps none of them except for Takaya were capable of this.

If synchronization with just a small spiritual body such as a gohou douji involved considerable difficulty, conducting a synchronization with a human being would require an even greater power. Although Nobunaga had the 'Seed of Evil Kings' to act as a medium, by looking at his ability to make Yuzuru act like a human puppet that he could control at will, one would be able to understand how this skill far exceeded the human capacity. As long as one was a part of Yami Sengoku, one should be able to comprehend this.

As expected, it has to be you.

Kotarou renewed his firm belief in this. --The one who can repel Nobunaga, and the one who can shatter Kenshin's designs.

Only you can do it.

Takaya did not move, he only focused on centralizing his spirit.
The freezing sea breeze blew above the promontory.
The 'Method of Connecting to Hell' had begun.
Even if they crippled Fujinomiya, there would be no meaning in their actions if they could not hinder the ritual at Enoshima. The 'Night Devil Path' would then be opened. They must not be allowed to succeed.

Enoshima radiated a dull, mysterious light. The Shounan sea sighed, waiting quietly as if in fear. Even the waves appeared to notice the strange power of the curse, the sound of its billowing ceased apprehensively.

As though engaged in mutual confrontation with Enoshima, Takaya straightened his back and firmly sat cross-legged in a Buddhist meditation posture.
The cold sea breeze blew towards Enoshima from Koyurugimisaki.

The setting sun had turned the western side of Enoshima into a pane of flaming crimson. At this moment, Kaizaki Makoto was occupied with the preparations for the curse, dictating orders at Okutsunomiya. The base of the enchantment had been set up at Okutsunomiya inside the cave.

"The scope is truly enormous."

Miura Yoshimoto, who had betrayed the Uesugi to bank on assistance from the Satomi, uttered as he stood beside Kaizaki. Yoshimoto was wearing black clerical robes with golden cloth sewings. Bustling about in the Okutsunomiya to establish the base of the enchantment were the associates of Kyoutake real estate.

"The Okutsunomiya and the cave have been connected, with this auxiliary cave as the primary base." Kaizaki, leaning against the pillar with both arms folded across his chest, explained to Yoshimoto. "The shrine maiden serving as the offering shall be arriving soon. Please conduct your invocation here, and call upon Benzaiten. Then immediately transmit Benzaiten's power into the cave."

Yoshimoto looked anxious. This was an important task. The invocation was originally set to be carried out by Kaizaki, however after coming to this place, he had entrusted this assignment to Yoshimoto. Kaizaki's assertion was: In order to demonstrate that the Satomi and Miura have a fair partnership, this enchantment should be implemented by Yoshimoto. Yoshimoto had agreed to it.

"But this matter of allowing me to carry out the enchantment, have you informed Satomi-dono about it yet?"

"If you're wondering about Yoshitaka-sama, I will tell him in time. It's all right, such a strong person like yourself will certainly be up to the task. You are probably far more reliable than I am."

Despite Kaizaki's words, it seemed like Yoshimoto was still uneasy. Kaizaki narrowed his eyes and observed Yoshimoto's manner, all of a sudden the cellphone in his breast pocket rang.

"Hello? Yes, speaking."

A subordinate of the Satomi had called him. Kaizaki nodded his head several times, exchanging a few words with him.

"Masaki-dono has...?"

The subordinate impatiently explained the situation from the other end of the line.

"...I understand. I will leave that matter to you. The curse will begin at midnight as according to plan. That'd be all."

Kaizaki replied, hanging up. Then his expression turned somewhat gloomy as though he was concerned about something, Yoshimoto asked him.

"Has something happened?"

Kaizaki, appearing to come back to his senses, looked at Yoshimoto. "...The captive Uesugi Kagetora has escaped."

"Kagetora has escaped!"

"Masaki Tokishige-dono is currently in pursuit of him. But there is no need to worry. Kagetora-dono's physical body at present is in a state where he cannot make use of his spells. He probably won't be able to hinder us even if he wanted to."

"W-We can't underestimate him!" Yoshimoto's eyes were bloodshot, he said gruffly. "If you are going to be sending troops after Kagetora, let me go! I want to crush the Hojo kinfolk! I want to make Kagetora..."

"That is not acceptable, Yoshimoto-dono." Kaizaki interrupted with a severe tone, Yoshimoto raised his eyes in defiance. "You must stay here to carry out the invocation."

"Even if I don't do this, it will be fine right? I want to crush the Hojo. You can carry out the invocation."

"Are you thinking of escaping?"

Kaizaki asked coldly, Yoshimoto was at a loss for words. An unfeeling expression drifted over Kaizaki's eyes behind his glasses, forcing Yoshimoto to obey him.

"If you cannot stay here and preside over the base of the enchantment, you will not be regarded as one of equal status with the Satomi. You should stay here."

"..."

"About Kagetora-dono, just leave that to us."

Although Yoshimoto wanted to retort, that high-handed intonation of Kaizaki ultimately made him speechless, he could only gnash his teeth in discontent, falling silent.

Seeing Yoshimoto's reaction, Kaizaki lifted his head and gazed at the dark forest of Enoshima. After the sun had set, the atmosphere had begun to grow cold. It seemed like if they intended to operate from night until dawn in this place, it would not be favorable if they did not have substantial provisions to keep them warm.
Takaya would definitely come to prevent the 'Method of Connecting to Hell'. Masaki Tokishige had decided that he would erase Takaya the moment he finds him. Kaizaki creased his brows, revealing an imposing expression.

***

The moment they stepped inside the compound, the fragrance of sea water greeted them. This place known as Koyurugimisaki was located in Koshigoe, east of the seacoast of Katase, there was a shrine called Koyurugi. This was where Sasaki Moritsuna had beckoned the local Shinto deity of Koshigoe at the end of the 12th century, during the Bunji era. Once it was night, the shrine doors would be shut, the surroundings would be in darkness. However tonight, for some reason, the compound was illuminated with lights. The shapes of several people could be seen on the grounds surrounded by the dense forest.
All of them were women.

"Natsuo should be inside right..."

From behind the thicket, Ayako and Reiko pried into the surroundings with rapt attention. Behind them, the 'Leader of the Ken En' Yagami spoke.

"We captured one of the Satomi's subordinates alive and literally forced this information out of him. There's no mistake. The offering would be imprisoned in this place until 10 o'clock tonight."

"..."

They were told that the offering was not to be seen by anyone before the arrival of the escorts, and was thus sealed inside this shrine. There were five shrine maidens keeping watch in the area. Every single one of them had been possessed by the 'Yachou' of the Satomi.

"They look pretty strong..."

Ayako conducted a spiritual examination of them. All of these lookouts possessed fairly strong spiritual powers.

"I'll just have to exorcise them."

"What do you plan to do to those people?"

"They've been possessed." Ayako urged Reiko as though she was saying 'Look'. "Someone like you might be able to see it. All of the shrine maidens have been possessed by souls."

"What?"

"I am now going to expel those souls. After driving them out, we'll change them into our soldiers." Ayako explained, she turned towards Yagami. "Are the 'Ken En' ready?"

"Yes. We are awaiting orders."

"Good. After I give the signal, immediately move into action."

Only Reiko was unclear of the actual situation and felt endlessly frenetic in her heart.

"You mentioned changing them into your soldiers... What do you mean? Change what?"

"Don't concern yourself with that, you just quietly watch what happens. You will swap with Natsuo as according to plan."

Reiko gulped, she was not sure if it was due to nervousness, her expression completely stiffened.

"It's okay, we'll be sure to cover you."

"Kakizaki-sama, there are people approaching from over there."

A shrine maiden, who was clearly a senior, was leading several men to the shrine. She appeared to be the person in charge here. Ayako and the rest held their breaths and hid in the underbrush. It seemed like the chief shrine maiden leading the men was anxiously asking all sorts of questions.

"I was told that the Uesugi have begun to move. Don't let your guards down. That offering is extremely suited to serve as Benzaiten's yorishiro, until the escorts arrive, treat her with care."

"Understood!"

"Has Kaizaki-sama still not made any contact?"

Kaizaki...

Ayako recalled the appearance of Kaizaki whom they had encountered a few days ago. As expected, that man was indeed one of the key officers of the Satomi. Although he was a descendant, she did not expect a modern person to be swept into this thorny issue. Ayako looked bitter, she gestured to Yagami, using her jaw to signal 'Go'. Yagami, without even making a single sound of ruffling bushes, disappeared into the darkness.

What on earth are these people planning to do?

Reiko looked at the side of Ayako's face with a mixture of uneasiness and suspicion. Not long after, a few wretched yells of 'Wahh' came from the opposite end of the promontory.

"What!"

As they had expected, there was an immediate reaction from the lookouts.

"What happened!"

"Intruders!"

The other shrine maidens dashed over from the other side of the forest, crying out loudly.

"An enemy attack! Several men...!"

"What! Capture them at once! ...You people stay here! Don't let anyone come close!"

After ordering the three powerful shrine maidens in this way, the chief shrine maiden ran together with the rest of the lookouts in the direction where the intruders had appeared. Seeing this circumstance, Ayako jumped out from the underbrush.

"What...!"

"Bai!"

Ayako flawlessly dealt the two of them with an external bind.

"Damn it!"

"!"

The other shrine maiden was just about to attack Ayako with an incantation when Ayako turned around and struck her beforehand.

"Warghh!"

"Bai!"

The three shrine maidens struggled to break free of the external binds, however it was useless. They could not move at all. Ayako knotted her fingers into the mudra of Bishamonten, concentrating her spirit.

"Noumakusamanda Bodanan Baishiramandaya Sowaka."

What!

Reiko could not help but doubt what she was witnessing. Another sort of aura, different from Ayako's, rapidly assembled around Ayako's body. That mudra and shingon belonged to Bishamonten. So did this aura. It was the ambience of Bishamonten.

This person is...!

"Namotobatsu Bishamonten! To subjugate the demons, grant me thy power!"

In the darkness of the night, Reiko could see the noble figure of Bishamonten in the raging flames behind Ayako.

"Exorcise!"

White light shot out from Ayako's open palms. Reiko shielded her eyes with her hand. At the same time that the white rays were released, black spiritual forms separated from the three bodies of the shrine maidens and were flung backwards. Then Reiko saw them melt away instantly into the radiance.

"T-This...!"

With this unbelievable scene before her, Reiko could not help but doubt her own eyes. She had never seen this sort of spiritual expulsion.

Incredible...!

Absolutely out of the ordinary. All of the spiritual expulsion methods that Reiko knew of required the burning of joss-sticks or the chanting of scriptures, in short, complicated procedures. But who on earth was this person? By simply concentrating the incantations, she could expel the three souls from the respective bodies. Furthermore, they were not merely expelled.

They've been purified!

The previously possessed shrine maidens dropped to the ground one after another. Reiko came back to her senses and dashed towards them wanting to carry them away.

"Do that later! Nikaido-san, over here!"

Ayako called out, darting towards the main building of the Shinto shrine, blasting the doors open.

"Natsuo-san...!"

Natsuo was there. Dressed in a white kimono, she was lying in a coffin placed in front of the altar as though she was dead. Of course, she was not dead. She was still breathing.

"Natsuo-san...! Yikes!"

The moment Ayako tried to hold Natsuo up, sparks burst out on her fingers as though she had run into static electricity, she reflexively pulled back her fingers as a result of the shock. The coffin itself seemed to possess a certain kind of spiritual energy, functioning as a kekkai.

"Damn it...!"

Ayako took out an object resembling a sort of charm from her clothes, on its surface was written the shingon of the God of Lightning. Ayako pressed it onto the coffin, she prayed to the God of Lightning using her other hand.

"Naumakusanmandaya Bodanan Indaraya Sowaka!"

Crackle crackle!

An intense electric current sped through. In an instant, the entire coffin was blazing in blue-white flames. The opposing force faded away, Ayako held Natsuo up. She was uncertain whether Natsuo had fallen into a state of semi-hypnosis or not, her open eyes were clouded and lifeless.

"Natsuo-san... Natsuo-san!"

Despite shaking her strongly, Natsuo did not recover her wits. Ayako held her forefinger and middle finger together, and pressed at the center of Natsuo's forehead, centralizing her spirit.

"Hah!"

Natsuo's body jolted, sustaining the impact of the induction. She finally regained her consciousness, and sharply opened her eyes. She jumped in fright, seeing Ayako in front of her.

"Ka...Kadowaki-san?"

"You're finally conscious, that's great. You were about to become an offering."

"Offering...?"

"There's no time to explain. Natsuo-san, please swap clothes with her right now."

"Huh...!"

"Hurry!"

Ayako firmly held onto Natsuo and plainly began to take off her clothes. Reiko removed her own clothes as well, exchanging all of them with Natsuo. Ayako was very well prepared, she took out a wig from her handbag she had obtained from someplace that greatly resembled Natsuo's long brown hair, and put it on Reiko.

"This should do. They won't take particular notice of the face, so it doesn't matter. Moreover both you look quite alike."

"Ka...Kadowaki-san, what is..."

Natsuo could not grasp the outline of the situation at all, Ayako told her.

"My accomplices will send you back to your father."

"Father!" It seemed like Natsuo finally remembered. "Is Father okay! Was he saved!"

"Your father should be taking refuge at the temporary shelter together with the rest of the island's residents."

"Taking refuge..."

"I'll slowly go through the details of the situation with you later. What's important is..."

Ayako said, turning towards Nikaidou Reiko, now completely attired in white robes. Reiko's face was stiff from worry. She would be leaving for Enoshima later, replacing Natsuo as the yorishirou of Benzaiten.

Despite the term yorishirou, it actually referred to an offering. One who became an offering presented to Benzaiten, would be bestowed with all of its power. The burden that would have to be carried when Benzaiten lodged in the physical body was extremely immense, it was said that most of the yorishirou would ultimately lose their lives as a result... though this was also a testament to how much power a tenbu like Benzaiten held.

That was why Reiko, who had far more competent spiritual endurance than Natsuo, had been selected as the replacement.

"It's okay. Trust us." Ayako told Reiko. "Kagetora will certainly protect and shield you. You definitely won't be manipulated by the Satomi, no matter what."

"...Really?" Reiko asked in a stiff tone. "Will it really be okay?"

"Kagetora is a man of his words." Ayako said with brimming confidence. "Believe in him, relax. He's very powerful. No matter what the situation, he definitely won't fail to live up to the expectations of others. Whatever the Satomi's strength is, it can't compare with his. It'll be fine."

Reiko recalled that forthright and pure expression in his eyes. Resolute and clear, beautiful eyes that were full of assurance. ...That sort of person, will he protect her?

The young man consistently having something to do with 'area #36'.

He was certainly no ordinary person to be repeatedly involved in those strange happenings. As though Reiko was saying 'I understand', she nodded. He would not just abandon her right. Reiko felt that he would not. Trust him then.

Ayako staunchly nodded in response.

"...!"

Sensing that there were people behind her, she turned around in shock. It was Yagami, who had already returned to the shrine. Yagami brought along the Satomi's chief shrine maiden. The hands of the chief shrine maiden had been tied to the back, her head drooped down as if in remorse.

"Yagami..."

"The Satomi's lookouts have all been dealt with."

A sound came from behind Yagami. Takaya and Kotarou appeared on the stone steps over there.

"Kagetora."

"Suga-san, seems like you're all right. That's good."

"What about the Satomi's subordinates?"

"The souls that had possessed the shrine maidens have all been secured. I've let the 'Ken En' possess them in return. Those shrine maidens would be regarded as the attendants of the yorishirou and thus be taken along. In this way, we can infiltrate Enoshima."

Takaya explained, walking to Yagami's side, he grabbed the hair of the chief shrine maiden, forcing her to lift her face.

"Damn... you..., you bunch of scoundrels..."

"We'll be relying on you to show us the way." Takaya uttered in a dictatorial tone at the chief shrine maiden whose face was contorted in protest. "You will lead the yorishirou and the shrine maidens to Enoshima, as according to your orders."

An insipid sneer appeared on Takaya's lips as he looked into the eyes of the chief shrine maiden. Her entire body shook all of a sudden, then stiffened without moving.

"...It's alright. Nothing happened here. Nothing strange happened."

The eyes of the chief shrine maiden very quickly lost their expression, sinking into a state of hypnosis. Takaya's whispering voice became a hypnotic intimation.

"The next time you open your eyes, all you have to do is continue to act as according to your orders. No disturbance occurred in this place, neither was there any unusual situation."

The chief shrine maiden half closed her eyelids, lapsing into a stupor as the intimation took its effect. Takaya signaled to Ayako and the others, Ayako stripped off the clothes from one of the shrine maidens that had collapsed and put them on.
After Ayako had finished changing, Kotarou carried that woman's body. It seemed like Takaya had decided to take the aforementioned woman and Natsuo together to a safe place, he urged Kotarou to first proceed to the car.

Then the shrine maidens formerly possessed by the Satomi and Kotarou shuffled together, assembling beside Takaya. Replacing the Satomi, all of them were now possessed by the Uesugi's 'Ken En'. The two remaining individuals that had been exorcised by Ayako were also possessed by the 'Ken En', they stood up all of a sudden. There were ten shrine maidens altogether. Standing side by side, they made for quite a magnificent sight.

"Suga-san."

Natsuo came running over when Takaya called her. Yagami stepped to the front.

"Kagetora-sama. How should I act next?"

"You will stay here and monitor the situation. If there's any sound of something astir, immediately report back. I'll be taking the locomotive to send Suga-san back to her father's side, will be back very soon."

After telling Ayako 'I'll leave the rest to you', Takaya's line of sight shifted to Nikaidou Reiko who was fully dressed in white. Reiko looked over with a frozen expression.

"It's okay." Takaya said in a steady voice. "I'll take responsibility for protecting your body at Koyurugimisaki. There's no need to be worried, you can rely on me."

"..."

Reiko looked at Takaya somewhat fascinated. Takaya was not posturing, neither was he saying these words due to worry, on the contrary he was carrying out these actions calmly and naturally.

Like what my grandmother used to say.

Reiko thought back on the words of her grandmother, who was a psychic. She had said, when choosing to whom she would entrust herself to, the first thing to do was to look into his eyes. The person who would be capable of protecting her was bound to be powerful. People say that the eyes are the window to one's soul, at the same time they also illustrate that person's confidence, honesty and other special characteristics.

This is a gentle person...

Reiko did not know why she felt this way. All of his emotions were shown in his eyes, bordering on overbearing candor. That was why she felt that his eyes were so beautiful, it was surely because of that bareness of his.
Takaya was extremely composed. Reiko felt that he regarded her own strength to be worthy, someone who had confidence in her worth. The tension in Reiko's expression disappeared.

"I shall count on you."

Takaya nodded. That was an expression full of sureness and fortitude.
The night gradually deepened, the moment of the start of the curse was indeed approaching.
