"He's not in... really?"

Hearing this from the hotel clerk, Narita Yuzuru sighed in disappointment. Yuzuru had asked Ayako for the name of the hotel they were staying at, and wanted to return Takaya's newly-washed clothes to him. It was barely ten o'clock in the morning. Yuzuru initially thought that Takaya would still be at the hotel in the morning, but he had already gone out.

"Can't be helped I guess..."

Looking at the paper bag beside his feet, Yuzuru slumped his shoulders.

"Then I'll head back. Could you please hand this over to him? It's a change of clothes. Just tell him that I sent them over after washing them."

"I understand. If you've any messages, we can convey them to him on your behalf."

"Messages..."

Yuzuru thought for a while, he fished out a green envelope from the pocket of his jacket. This was the ticket to the concert that Takaya had recently promised to go with him. Yuzuru had wanted to personally hand it to him, but judging from the circumstances, he did not know when he would be able to see Takaya.

"Could you give this to him as well? It's the ticket to a concert next Sunday. Please tell him that I'll wait for him at the seats."

"I understand. May I know your name?"

"I'm Narita. He'll know once you mention this. Thanks."

Yuzuru placed the paper bag containing the clothes on the front desk. Returning to the car park, Yuzuru's beloved used car was waiting for him. It was a Serve that had the sign 'Novice Driver' pasted on the front and back of the vehicle. This car was given to him by a friend of his parents, the Matsumoto car license number was clearly indicated on the number plate.

Yuzuru got into the driver's seat, he looked back at the hotel once again. Although he was hoping to be lucky enough to have breakfast with Takaya, it seemed like Takaya did not even have the leisure of sleeping until this hour.

I always feel like I'm Takaya's maid helping him to wash his clothes...

Yuzuru sighed. He decided that at the very least this was better than not being of any use, Yuzuru felt himself to be inferior as well as pitiful.
Yuzuru placed his personal letter and concert ticket into the envelope, the contents of the letter read like a mother who was worried about her son beginning to live on his own, in retrospect he felt a little humiliated.

Now that I think about it, we haven't cruised in this car together yet...

Imagining Takaya sitting in the adjacent seat desperately nitpicking on Yuzuru's novice driving skills, Yuzuru felt that it would be fun and smiled, but his smile immediately faded away without a trace.

If you could hitch a ride in this car, we could return to Matsumoto together.

He always felt that Takaya and him were not suited for Tokyo. If they return to Matsumoto, would Takaya revert to his former self? Yuzuru had gone to the extent of pondering over this matter.

Yuzuru recalled the blue sky by the side of the main cement street. At this time of the year, the Northern Alps in Matsumoto would be covered in white snow, brightly reflecting the blue, cloudless sky of winter.
Have those mountain ranges changed now? Was that wintry air still blowing through the streets of Matsumoto...? Even if the cold nearly froze the skin, that intolerable, freezing mountain wind from the Alps that caused one's legs to jitter, it still gave Yuzuru a feeling of nostalgia. In this thick and sluggish atmosphere saturated with exhaust fumes from the vehicles and dust, Yuzuru reminisced about the city he grew up in.

Far away from this Yokohama,

Matsumoto is more fun...

"...!"

Suddenly, there was a severe pain in the center of his forehead, Yuzuru nearly bent over.

What...!

He was invaded by a loathsome pain stirring up within him. Yuzuru pressed his hands against the spot of the pain, his complexion had been 'painted' with a pale color.

The 'Seed of Evil Kings'...

It had never been like this previously. What on earth was this pain? Shouldn't it be frozen? Could it be that the freezing bind had weakened?

Shit...

Yuzuru grew anxious. Wanting to stop the churning he concentrated on his consciousness. There was a sense of foreboding which caused one to feel nauseated, Yuzuru suddenly felt uneasy. Could this be some kind of omen? Yuzuru clenched his teeth and looked up.

Takaya...!

"On Sorasabataei Sowaka, On Sorasabataei Sowaka---..."

Inside the hall, the shingon of Benzaiten was being chanted continuously. Nikaido Reiko had sealed herself inside the hall for three hours. The Houanden was presently suffused with a strange, highly dense spiritual atmosphere.

In order to save Suga Natsuo's father, who had been struck with the 'Method of the Juuou Night Devil', Reiko and Kadowaki Ayako had combined their strength to challenge it with a counter-curse. That puppet known as a curse douji, which Ayako had given Reiko, served as an antenna. Once Reiko's prayer has assembled a sufficiently enormous amount of magical power in this Shinto shrine dedicated to Benzaiten, this energy would be transported to Ayako's side via the pair of curse douji. Ayako would receive a portion of that power, consolidating both of their capacities to strike down the curse of the enemy. It would be fairly difficult for one person to manage this, but as long as it was carried out via this particular method, they should be able to succeed.

The surface of the curse douji placed in front of Reiko had begun to turn a shade of copper, it was approaching the critical point. The 'vitality of the land' had a marked response to Reiko and Ayako's prayer mainly because Enoshima was a group of islands that was under the influence of Benten's conviction. It was necessary for them to make use of this as a protective screen, in addition to protecting Natsuo's father from the curse, they had to further repel the curse to the other party.

Reiko prayed to Benzaiten with full concentration.

"On Sorasabataei Sowaka...!"

There was a 'splitting' sound, much like the cracking of tree branches, the head of the curse douji had fractured. The surface of the curse douji emitted an extremely high heat, becoming mottled as the cracking sounds spread throughout its entire body.

"!"

The curse douji finally burst apart.
As the stored energy resulting from the prayer reached the threshold, it transformed into a huge nodule of power, and was delivered to Ayako from Reiko's side.

We did it...!

Sensing the genuine response, Reiko opened her eyes.
At the same time, Benzaiten's 'power' flew to Ayako who was with Natsuo's father. The curse douji beside her knee received that share of formidable energy, issuing a golden radiance.

"!"

Ayako suddenly opened her eyes.

This is it...!

Ayako grabbed the golden curse douji and threw it at the figure of the Enma-ou who was causing Natsuo's father to suffer.

"Black arts of violence and evil, shatter!"

The curse douji transformed into a golden arrow, piercing directly into the body of the Enma-ou seated on the water buffalo. Then, an acute spray of turquoise flames emanated from the curse douji intermixed with the Enma-ou, encircling the entire area.

"Ohhhhh!"

Everyone at the scene witnessed this feat. As the turquoise flames sprouted out of the Enma-ou, starting from its head it began to blacken as it melted away, like a piece of paper burning into ashes. At the same time that the Enma-ou was amalgamated, the body temperature of Natsuo's father, which had been burning like a piece of heated iron, gradually began to subside, the black ink-like Sanskrit character that had appeared his chest gradually faded away as well.
Natsuo's father, who had been writhing in pain all this while, was finally liberated. He fell back onto the bed as though his energy had been snatched away. It appeared that they had succeeded without trouble.

"Hu...."

Ayako sighed deeply, she wiped away the sweat on her forehead, she turned towards the people who were present at the scene.

"That was close. But despite the danger, we managed to save a life. It's all right now."

"W...Wonderful, he's saved!"

"What was that just now? The deity who was floating there is..."

"..."

There was a somber grimace on Ayako's face.
There was no mistake. The one who had cursed Natsuo's father, was the same person who had cursed the city councilor, Gotou. Furthermore, there was a 80 to 90% chance that he was an associate of Kyoutake real estate. Was it because of the tourism reconstruction plans? ...No.

Was it to obtain Enoshima...?

It must be related to the onshou they had encountered in the cave yesterday. There was obviously something behind this jusatsu that was related to Yami Sengoku.

But why are they doing this?

At this point in time, Ayako was still unaware of the matter regarding the Satomi and the fuuketsu. After several minutes, Reiko returned from the Hetsunomiya. At first, she thought that she would be in a happy mood due to their success, however Reiko had an desperate look on her face as though she had no time to be getting excited over this. Ayako was startled.

"What's the matter?"

"Natsuo-san hasn't returned yet?"

Ayako and the rest of the people present merely went 'Huh'. Reiko showed them the red, flat-bottomed, leather shoe she was holding, she said urgently.

"This shoe was found around the area of the Hetsunomiya. Natsuo-san was wearing it. Where is Natsuo-san? She didn't return?"

Now that she mentioned it, Natsuo had not return. All of them had believed that she was with Reiko, but this was not the case. Furthermore, she had left her shoe behind, this was unusual.

"Don't tell me..." Ayako gulped. "She was captured by someone...?"

"Perhaps so." Reiko's face was solemn. "Perhaps Natsuo-san met with some accident. Let's look for her! If we don't hurry, the situation might become irremediable."

Alarmed, people began to bustle about in a frenzied manner. Ayako felt a sense of forewarning, she asked Reiko.

"Don't tell me the workers of Kyoutake real estate are responsible for this..."

"I'll go to the police to request for backup. She might still be somewhere nearby."

Ayako and Reiko had no time for rest, they hurried out once again.

***

The sunshine of winter shone into the red Shinto shrine backed by Daijin-yama.
Tourists had been continuously streaming into the Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine of Kamakura since morning. Numerous white doves were pecking away at the feed scattered by the tourists on the sandou. At present, a group of tourists were taking pictures for keepsake. They looked like a touring party of elderly people from somewhere.

Chiaki looked about from the top of the stone steps at the extremely excited grandfathers and grandmothers before glancing at his watch.

"It's already 11 o'clock, Oji."

Chiaki sat on the stone steps, he casually looked at Irobe Katsunaga who was standing beside him.

"You haven't said a word since, isn't it about time you explain this to me?"

"..."

Irobe Katsunaga resembled a much elder brother placating his headstrong younger brother as he looked at Chiaki. By Chiaki's reckoning, the body Irobe had taken was probably more than ten years older than his. His height was roughly around Takaya's, perhaps a little shorter. His tanned skin and somewhat bony face type gave one the impression of reliability. Those eyes bore a strong resemblance to a certain famous professional golf player. Irobe narrowed those kindly eyes, he started to talk.

"If you want an explanation, didn't I do that just now?"

"'There's someone I'd like you to meet'. Is that considered an explanation? Oji."

The Gingko tree in Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine was the agreed place of their rendezvous. This large Gingko tree was rumored to be the place where Minamoto Kugyo hid when he assassinated his uncle Minamoto Sanetomo, the third shogun of the Kamakura shogunate.

After meeting with Irobe Katsunaga for the first time in over 30 years, Chiaki was taken to Kamakura by Irobe. Irobe had mentioned that he wanted him to meet with a certain person.
However, four hours had passed since their arrival, the person they were supposed to convene with had yet to appear.

Chiaki had grown tired of feeding the pigeons. The pigeons hopped onto his shoulders and head pestering him for grains, but once the hungry pigeons were sprinkled with rays, they did not go near him again. Chiaki licked at the pigeon feed that had moistened in his palm, he wrinkled his face as it tasted terrible.

"Can't you just explain the current situation to me?" Chiaki, his face still in a grimace, stared at Irobe in that way. "What's going on with you? What have you been doing all this while? Why didn't you contact Kagetora? Didn't you perform kanshou five, six years ago? Is this the body you possessed then?"

"No. I've changed bodies once." Irobe shook his head. "My possession of this body took place one year ago."

"One year ago? Then what were you doing before that?"

"I was an infant."

"Infant? So you performed kanshou again from the body of the infant?"

"Because I had to let my soul rest for a while." Irobe said, he sat two steps above Chiaki and hugged his knees. "After the battle with Nobunaga, I was the only one whose body was still alive. I handled everything that followed by myself. The only period of recuperation for us kanshousha is when we're an infant. ...During that time, Naoe's body had grown to adulthood, I felt that I could leave matters to him, hence I didn't possess an adult but an infant body."

"What happened to that body?"

"It died a year ago."

"Accidental death?"

"Not accidental. It was deliberate."

Chiaki stared at him in shock. Irobe looked at Chiaki with a serious expression in his eyes, his hands were folded under his chin.

"I deliberately let the body die, and possessed another body."

"Deliberately..."

Chiaki could not probe into his true intention, he frowned for a while, he lowered his voice and asked menacingly.

"What do you mean by deliberate? You performed kanshou once again according to you own will? For what reason?"

"It was necessary for me to possess the body of an adult."

"Necessary?" Chiaki's expression grew serious. "Who necessitated it? You yourself? Or..."

"..."

Whose instructions did he receive?

Irobe did not reply, he merely said that Chiaki would naturally understand it later. The outline of Irobe's distinct eyebrows lowered slightly, from then on he gazed at the trunk of the large Gingko tree, he shaded his beautiful double eyelids from the glare.

"What about you, didn't you mention wanting to break away from the Uesugi? If you no longer want to do this, why don't you stop performing kanshou and be purified?"

"No particular reason. The reason I performed kanshou is merely because I don't intend to be purified. No matter what, I want to continue to live on this earth, in any case, isn't reincarnation and undergoing kanshou the same thing?"

"A reply that's truly like you. But why do you still stay by Kagetora-dono's side? Didn't you want to sever diplomatic relations with the Uesugi?"

"...Because I'm too kind a person to do so." Chiaki gnawed his tongue, he pulled back his fringe. "If nobody helped him, that sort of weak brat would simply become a problem to society."

"... You're still the same, a good-hearted person."

Chiaki was displeased.

"Think whatever you will about me. But I was asking you a question."

Irobe only smiled, he did not give any answers.

"The Takeda's Atake ship during that time, how did you know about it? The mermaids and stuff, where did you get that information from? Don't tell me you investigated this by yourself? Do you know what's going on with those mermaids?"

"Those mermaids are soldiers of the Satomi."

"What?"

"The mermaids that have been stirring up endless disturbances in society at the moment, they are in fact the 'Yachou' of the Satomi. Are you aware of the special forces of the Satomi suigun? They are the souls of the soldiers who died in the waters during the naval battles. Now it's not just the periphery of Enoshima, the mermaids have emerged in the coastal areas of the Miura Peninsula as well. They have been charged with the task of holding Enoshima from any enemies that may come from the sea. The Takeda's operation to transport the elemental stone had also been anticipated by the Satomi."

"How do you know of these matters?" Chiaki's interrogation grew intensely guarded.
"You mentioned that the Satomi wanted to acquire Enoshima, isn't this related to the issue regarding the fuuketsu? How did you figure this out? Are you aware of the Satomi's movements? If you knew about it, why didn't you immediately inform Kagetora?"

"Because I still haven't obtained reliable data."

"Reliable data? What data?"

"Data about the Satomi's true motives. Whether the fuuketsu can indeed negate the 'power of exorcism'."

"Are you referring to the myth about the dead returning?"

Irobe nodded.
"The Satomi have the Oda behind them. If this operation was merely dependent on the strength of the Satomi it may be impossible, but as long as they have the strength of the Oda, it could actually be achieved."

"..."

Chiaki hugged his knees, he looked up at Irobe.
"When did you start investigating this matter? You speak as though you've infiltrated the Satomi in your investigation. ...I really don't understand you. If you performed kanshou one year ago, why didn't you contact us? What the hell have you been doing all this while?"

Irobe looked back at Chiaki quietly. Although Irobe was not the intelligent or capable type, he was honest and an extremely talented individual. Irobe's expression remained calm and steady throughout even though Chiaki had raised a question and wanted answers, his innermost thoughts could not be read at all.

"...Anyway let us first meet 'him'." Irobe said to Chiaki calmly. "Our first priority is to decipher the Satomi's plot."

Although Chiaki had revealed all of his mistrust on his face, he was not so impatient as to force the other party to spill out all the words that 'cannot be said at present'.
Chiaki decided to first moderate the circumstances.

The two of them waited for another 30 minutes or so. Could it be that the other party had met with some mishap? But Irobe was not the least bit anxious. If he really wanted to wait, he could probably wait until tomorrow.
The pigeons flew off together, a man approached from the front. The man wore a hooded overcoat, intermingled amongst the tourists, he walked from the Noh stage up the stone steps.

"Looks like he's here."

"..."

Seeing the man, Chiaki stood up slowly. The man looked at Chiaki as he ascended the steps, then saluted Chiaki as he came face to face with him.
Chiaki was stunned.
There was no mistake. This was a face that he knew. Chiaki could not help but widen his eyes in surprise, muttering that man's name.

"Hakkai..."

The man came before Chiaki and greeted him formally.

"My respects after this long period of absence. Yasuda-sama."

The man whose whereabouts had been unknown since the events of Hiroshima was now standing before Chiaki. This man was formerly the 'leader of the Ken En'.

The last person who had seen Hakkai was Ayako, after they went their separate ways at the entrance of Akiyoshi-do. Hakkai had gone after Kagetora who had been held captive by the Mouri, he should have driven to Hagi city, but they had not been able to contact him ever since. If he was safe, he should have been able to inform them via the 'Ken En', for this reason, Chiaki and the others finally concluded that 'Hakkai had been destroyed by the Mouri'. However, seeing Hakkai again when he least expected it, Chiaki could not hide his puzzlement.

"You're still alive? So the Mouri didn't kill you?"

"Hakkai is all right. My apologies for having given Kagetora-sama and my lord trouble."

"If you were safe why didn't you contact us immediately? It's been two years...!"

Chiaki looked at Hakkai and Irobe in turn. Why were they together? He grew increasingly confused.

"What's going on?"

"..."

"What are you two hiding?"

"We're not hiding anything."

Irobe firmly replied, but there was definitely something between the two of them that Chiaki was not aware of. Chiaki's expression grew more and more vicious.

"Hakkai, you're the leader of the 'Ken En', no? What the hell is the leader doing by leaving his subordinates? What have you been doing all this while?"

After Hakkai went missing, another person had been put in charge of commanding the 'Ken En'. He was originally Hakkai's assistant, he was appointed as the new 'Ken En leader' by Kagetora, an individual by the name of 'Yagami'.

"Hakkai is truly sorry. Because of certain reasons..."

Reasons? Chiaki stared.

"Yes. Since the events of Itsukushima, Hakkai has been operating under the direct orders of Kenshin-kou."

"Direct orders?"

Chiaki could not help but question him in a stern voice, he immediately pressed his hand against his mouth.

"What do you mean? Are you saying Kenshin personally..."

Leaving the question half-complete, Chiaki suddenly remembered. The one who had cast a Touketsu Nami on Nobunaga's 'Seed of Evil Kings' at Itsukushima shrine. Had that been really Kenshin himself? ...Additionally, their loss of communication with Hakkai had occurred during that battle in Itsukushima.

"So you've been following Kenshin all this while?"

"...Yes."

"So you've been acting according to Kenshin's personal orders? Don't tell me that includes you?" Chiaki turned towards Irobe. "The same goes for you I assume? You've left the Yashashuu and become Kenshin's personal subordinate?"

"I did not leave the Yashashuu. Nagahide." Irobe said in a deep, resonant voice. "My identity as a Yashashuu has never changed. This is just temporary. Due to a certain reason, I've received Kenshin-kou's orders and acted as accordingly."

"Certain reason?" Chiaki did not understand. "What is that about? Isn't this getting stranger as we speak?"

Since Kenshin's appearance at Itsukushima shrine, he had not once appeared before Kagetora. Not a single communication had been made. If there was any special command, Kenshin would usually issue his orders to the Yashashuu via Kagetora. This had always been the case in the past. But what was currently going on behind these 'direct orders' that they spoke of?

"It's only natural for you to feel suspicious. But this undertaking is the foundation work for the complete annihilation of Yami Sengoku in the long run."

Irobe could see Chiaki's query, and uttered.

"Kenshin-kou has this idea in mind, for this reason he called upon the two of us for assistance."

"Foundation work? Wouldn't it good enough to relay orders to Kagetora for that?"

"Kenshin-kou has a need for Kagetora-sama to continue to concentrate his strength in settling the onshou disturbances that have been occurring unceasingly. Kenshin-kou does not wish to interfere with Kagetora-sama's task, thus did this to allow both operations to proceed simultaneously."

"...Unbelievable..." Standing on the stone steps, Chiaki folded his arms. "So Kagetora doesn't know about this, right?"

Hakkai nodded.

"Kagetora-sama is not aware."

"Why isn't this mentioned to Kagetora? There's no need to keep this a secret, is there?"

"There's no need to. But I would like you to not mention this to him for the time being."

Irobe's unusually cautious words caused Chiaki to feel even more suspicious.

"Don't mention this?"

"You don't wish for Kagetora-dono to think too much of other matters at this moment, right?"

Does he know of Kagetora's situation...?

Was Irobe referring to Takaya's weakened spirit because of Kotarou?

"Anyway, the first thing we have to do is to thwart the plans of the Satomi. Nagahide."

Irobe restored an expression that excluded all personal emotions, he said tersely.

"The fuuketsu of Enoshima is not the only place where the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' will be carried out."

"Not only Enoshima?"

"That's right. The Satomi are planning to conduct the curse at two other places. The Satomi will definitely show up over there."

"Where?"

"Fujinomiya." Irobe replied firmly. "The Satomi will probably carry out the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' at Fujinomiya's Asama Grand Shrine in the Shizuoka Prefecture. There would be no meaning to their actions if they don't execute this in that place. They definitely can't be allowed to do this. We have to crush the Satomi."

"Please go to Fujinomiya, Yasuda-sama. Hakkai will investigate the Satomi's movements and -- convey the information to you."

Once Chiaki turned, Hakkai said.

"Compared to the Satomi, the Oda behind them is even more dangerous. Nobunaga is slowly beginning to make his move."

"Do you know Nobunaga's location?"

"This matter is still under investigation. The Satomi will most certainly contact Nobunaga. If Nobunaga were to exploit the 'Method of Connecting to Hell', it would be extremely dangerous."

Hakkai took out a yellow protective talisman from his clothes and gave it to Chiaki.

"As a preventive measure, please take this Yasuda-sama, just in case. The Satomi have men capable of delivering the 'Method of the Juuou Night Devil'. This talisman will protect you. If you are attacked by any chance, no harm should come to you."

"...Thanks." Chiaki glanced at Hakkai. "Send my regards to our lord Kenshin will you."

"..."

After he finished, Chiaki headed down the stone steps with a disgruntled expression. Irobe and Hakkai exchanged glances, after nodding to each other as though they were verifying something, Irobe followed after Chiaki.
Under the large apricot tree, Hakkai lightly pulled the lapels of his coat together as the cold winds of Daijin-yama blew.

***

Several hours later, Ayako received word from the 'Ken En Leader', Yagami, and met up with him. Apparently, Yagami had contacted Kotarou before this. Ayako was informed of Takaya's kidnapping by Yagami, they eventually pinpointed Kotarou's location and headed to the small peninsula of Inamura in order to meet him.

It was close to evening. Seeing Kotarou's car - a black GTO - parked at the public park of Inamura peninsula, Ayako immediately got out of her car and ran towards the place.

"Kotarou!"

Kotarou, attired in a black Western suit, was leaning against the car. Hearing Ayako's voice, he turned around.

"Kakizaki-dono."

"Have you found Kagetora!"

"No, not yet."

"What happened! Was Kagetora kidnapped by the Satomi? Aren't you always together with him! What were you doing!"

"...My subordinates are currently doing their best to gather information. His whereabouts should be determined soon."

Kotarou was extremely calm. Should it be said that his bearing was worthy of a ninja? Despite the fact that his master had been taken captive, he did not look the least bit shaken. Instead of growing indecisive, he had already taken the proper measures.

"The Satomi had anticipated our presence at the cave and had laid an ambush over there. They were definitely planning to kidnap Saburo-dono."

"What are you acting so calm about! You couldn't even protect one master, could you? Do you still consider yourself a ninja in that way?"

Kotarou trembled slightly, he looked at Ayako with an inorganic expression in his eyes.

"It is useless to grow agitated. When caught in an unfavorable situation, we only need to have correct judgment."

"I'm asking you what the hell were you doing! You didn't just quietly watch them take Kagetora away did you!"

"..."

Kotarou did not explain himself.
Without a doubt, if Kotarou had been at the scene, he certainly would not have just watched as Kagetora was taken away. However the Satomi were extremely shrewd. After Kotarou and Takaya separated, the Satomi had seized that opportunity to attack Kotarou, who was left by himself, by sending ten of their 'Yachou'.

He had immediately noticed that something unexpected had happened to Takaya. However the Satomi had focused their strength on Kotarou from the very beginning. While Kotarou was being hindered by the soldiers of the Satomi on the beach, Takaya had been taken away. By the time Kotarou had defeated all of the 'Yachou' and proceeded to Chigo fuchi, even Miura Yoshimoto had carried away by the ship. Kotarou immediately thought of using the small boat to pursue them, but it could not be done. The small boat had been completely wrecked by the Satomi's mermaids.

Although the situation had been beyond his control, the fact that he could not protect his master remained. But instead of finding excuses to justify himself or wallow in regret, Kotarou's thoughts were wholly concentrated on how to rescue Kagetora.

"The Fuuma ninja are doing their best to track down his whereabouts. Now is not the time for us to get distraught, we should calmly wait for information before formulating a plan."

"Do you understand the seriousness of the situation? Don't you feel a tiny bit of guilt?"

Ayako felt extremely sick of Kotarou's rationalism.

"How about you do a little bit of soul-searching! Why are you following Kagetora! Shouldn't it be an easy matter for a ninja to protect his master! Should anything happen to Kagetora because of this...!"

"Even if Kakizaki-dono were to become infuriated, it will not save Saburo-dono, will it?"

Kotarou looked at Ayako with a contemptuous expression.

"If they were planning to kill him, the Satomi would have killed Saburo-dono on the spot. If they did not, they had the intention of taking him captive from the start, they do not wish to kill him. As long as we respond to this calmly, we can save Saburo-dono."

"...!"

Ayako was at a loss for words. Kotarou's expression did not change at all. Like a machine. He was like a computer which processed information in a discreet and rational manner in order to handle a situation. She could not see any sign of him worrying about Takaya at all.
This man caused one to feel that he was intolerably deficient in emotions.

"That's why you won't do..."

Her agitation had reached the summit, Ayako groaned. Kotarou heard her words, he reacted to it slightly.

"What?"

"It's impossible for a person like you to imitate anyone in the first place! Saying that you want to become Naoe, what a big joke that is! We simply shouldn't have let someone like you stay by Kagetora's side!"

For the first time, Kotarou's expression faltered. He somberly widened his eyes as he stared at Ayako.

"What do you mean by that...?"

"It's all because of the expendable matters you've done that Kagetora has become more and more depressed! Even if he were to go mad and die, even if he were to accept Naoe's death, it would be several thousands, several tens of thousand times better than this! We should have let him see the fact that Naoe is no longer here from the start! Even if he were to die, it would be much better than being in this current situation!"

"...!"

"You honestly don't understand what it feels like to lose someone important!"

Kotarou gasped as he looked at Ayako. Was Ayako overlapping Takaya's silhouette with her feelings when Shintarou was parted from her by death? She wiped the corners of her eyes fiercely and turned towards Yagami.

"I want all of the 'Ken En' to find out where Kagetora has been taken to."

"Kakizaki-sama."

"Also, locate Natsuo-san's whereabouts. I'll take charge. Don't borrow the strength of the Fuuma." Ayako turned toward Kotarou, she said coldly. "I won't allow you to continue with your pretense of Naoe in front of Kagetora!"

After Ayako finished, she stomped back to the two-seater Civic Yagami had driven to this place. Yagami, who was left behind, looked at Kotarou with a serious face, he lowered his voice and said.

"As the pillar of the Fuuma, there will come a day when you'll be defeated."

"..."

Kotarou restored an expressionless face and looked at Yagami. Yagami sneered as though he was flaunting his victory.

"We 'Ken En' will protect Kagetora-sama. If you want to be Kagetora-sama's personal escort, come again when you're able to do this much."

After that, Yagami ran after Ayako and left. The cold sea breeze blew past the Inamura peninsula. Kotarou resumed his plastic-like, inorganic expression, he pursed his lips together lightly as he watched the car depart. The shape of Enoshima sat to one side of the glinting great waves, against the sunset.

Was it really possible to create a path leading to Hell over there?
Kotarou pondered over it. If there was really a way for the dead to return... if the dead could really return to the human plane...

Isn't Saburo-dono the one who needs it the most?

Kotarou was confused. If the dead could return from the other world, that would also mean that the 'power of exorcism' held by Takaya and the others would be rendered insignificant. It was precisely because of the fact that the dead could not return that made the 'power of exorcism' absolute, a strength that instilled fear in the onshou. But, even if this should negate his own 'power of exorcism'...

Wasn't Takaya also seeking for return of the dead? If there was a path that could allow Naoe to return, even if he had to abandon his mission and duty - to the extent of disregarding his morals - wouldn't Takaya choose it?
If he could really have this miracle of calling back the eternally lost, the person whom he needed more than anyone else.
Even if Takaya had to give up everything, wouldn't he intensely hope for the realization of this miracle?

"..."

Kotarou was at a loss. He was still not aware that, despite his rationale of prioritizing his mission and strategy, he had developed personal feelings for Takaya and was thus confused. As though he wanted to bury his emotions into the depths, he put on a pair of sunglasses and got into his car.

Ayako rang Takaya's room in the morning.
He heard from Ayako that Suga Natsuo had left an SMS for the latter which said 'Please come immediately', explaining that her father's symptoms had rapidly worsened, he was having a high fever, behaving deliriously while calling out the Enma's name. As this was truly extremely unusual, Natsuo, in distress and believing in what Ayako had said the other day about 'managing demons', had contacted Ayako to request help.

--There's a high possibility that he has been cursed with a jusatsu.

After having heard of Gotou's case from Reiko, Ayako mentioned in an urgent tone.

--Anyway, I'm going to Enoshima right now. If it's really a jusatsu, it'll get worse if it isn't stopped as soon as possible.

Takaya said that he wanted to go as well, but Ayako refused.

--It'd be better if we don't move together for the time being.

When asked why, Ayako replied that she was saddled with a troublesome individual at the moment.

--Troublesome individual?

Ayako briefly explained to Takaya about Nikaido Reiko over the phone. Reiko and the others seemed to be targeting Takaya in particular, thus it would be better not to come into contact with them, in order to avoid wasting time on unnecessary inconveniences.

Although he was not entirely clear about what had happened, Takaya decided to follow Ayako's advice.

--But I want to go to Enoshima. The investigation of the cave was left unfinished.

--Now that you mention it, you've got a point there. But don't let yourself be found out, do your utmost to not let them recognize you.

Thus Ayako and the others headed to Enoshima before Takaya. Chiaki had contacted the receptionist at about 7 A.M., but he only mentioned that he was safe, informing them not to worry, without reporting his whereabouts. Was it because the situation was urgent? Or was it because he did not want the hassle of Takaya's rigorous questioning about something that had happened?

He did not receive any other message after that.

The situation seems to be becoming more and more strange.

Takaya tightened his face as he went down the large staircase, coming to a hall on the first level that resembled a movie set. The hall stretched up to the sky, the glass elevator behind the staircase moved efficiently up and down.

Heeding Ayako's cautioning, even though it had not reached the stage where he needed to disguise himself, Takaya still wore a pair of sunglasses to conceal his face, on his lowered head he wore a fur hat. Next, in order to change his image, he was completely attired in black. After a moment's hesitation, Takaya had given up the leather jacket that he usually wore, and changed into that Cashmere overcoat. But by dressing in this way, he did not know whether he appeared like a film star, every single cleaner and passerby turned to take another glance at him, apparently it made him even more conspicuous. This caused Takaya to feel ill at ease.

Following beside him was a man above 190 centimeters in height, wearing a black suit and beige windbreaker, additionally, his long hair was tied to the back in a bundle, this appeared to be another feature that drew the attention of other people. (But the tall man did not seem bothered by the watchful eyes of the humans)

"Special investigator from the committee of National Public Security...?"

Are they connected to the police? It seemed like the national public institutions have finally begun to actively investigate the happenings related to Yami Sengoku. His troubles were increased by one yet again, Takaya felt extremely frustrated. All sorts of disturbances arose in various parts of the country, this was probably the reason why he was being targeted.

...It should be okay I guess.

"I will bring the car over here." Kotarou said to Takaya at the entrance. "Please wait here for a moment."

Takaya did not say anything, he only observed Kotarou's business-like actions.
'Naoe' did not seem bothered about the matter of the previous night either. In order to not let that sort of Naoe cause injury to himself, Takaya had unconsciously begun to train himself to shut out his own emotions.
Takaya replied with a 'Mmm', Kotarou headed to the car park. At this moment, a man who was standing by the doorway, as though he was waiting for someone, turned and headed this way.

Takaya nearly cried out 'Ah'. Takaya had seen that man before.

"You..."

The man lowered his head quietly. It appeared that he recognized Takaya. The person who had been waiting for Takaya was the man he had met yesterday in the cave - the onshou: Miura Yoshimoto.

"The Satomi clan?"

Seated in the lobby of the first-storey coffeehouse overlooking the harbor, Takaya and Kotarou were surprised by Yoshimoto's words. Initially, Takaya still exercised caution against this man due to the events of the previous day, but Yoshimoto's manner was very respectful from the start, furthermore he made it clear that he did not mean them any harm.

After Yoshimoto stated his identity honorably, he spoke.

"Yes. Those men I put to sleep in the cave were all subordinates of the Satomi."

Apparently, Yoshimoto was a man who still retained the old mannerisms of a general. He sat on the stool like how a warrior would sit on a chair in a camp, resting lightly on the chair with his legs wide apart, with a perfectly straight back he faced Takaya directly. As his way of sitting was really unnatural, the waiter looked at him with a puzzled expression.

Even though Takaya had sent a gohou douji to pursue this man yesterday, he had fled into a powerful kekkai, thus it could not continue to chase him. Takaya was considerably surprised because he absolutely did not expect for him to show up in public.

"Please accept my apologies for yesterday's matter. I mistook you for comrades of the Satomi. Later on, I heard from a retainer that you had crushed an accomplice of the Satomi? The incident with Nagano Narimori. For me to have been ignorant about this matter, to the extent of behaving with disrespect..."

Although Yoshimoto was not hostile, Takaya had heard that he was of the Miura, he could not help but keep his guard up. The Miura was a clan that the Hojo had eliminated very early on. Even though Kagetora was one of their children, fortunately Yoshimoto did not seem to notice it. Avoiding this matter, Takaya spoke.

"Let's not dwell on that anymore. Why did you come here? What does the Satomi intend to do with that cave?"

Yoshimoto tightened his jaw and broad cheeks, he pursed his thick lips with a solemn expression and said.

"Do you know that there's a fuuketsu leading to Mt. Fuji inside that cave?"

"Fuuketsu?"

"Yes. That fuuketsu is said to be the 'Passage of the Gods'. The Gods pass through the fuuketsu, journeying back and forth between the spiritual peak of Mt. Fuji and Enoshima. However there is another myth about this that has been passed down."

Yoshimoto lowered his voice and said.

"It's not really the Gods whom have been traveling through the fuuketsu, but the dead."

Takaya widened his eyes. "The dead?"

"Yes. The legend that Koubou Daishi - Kukai - was the person who opened the fuuketsu. Do you know of this?"

This legend was about the time when Koubou Daishi went into seclusion in this cave for religious practices. It was said that there used to be a skillful and brilliant flute player on the shores of Katase. The name of that youth was Inagi. All the tunes that he played with his flute were pleasant to the ears as though they were the music of the heavens, whenever the youth played the flute, the turbulent sea would be calmed, the withering flowers would bloom once again, foul thoughts would be cleansed, evil humans would shed tears and make amends.

Inagi had a lover called Nami. But one day, Nami was stricken with a disease and died.
Inagi was extremely sorrowful. To lament his grief, he played the flute for seven days and seven nights. The sound of the flute was incomparably sorrowful, the seas grew violent because of this, torrential rain poured down, all the crops on the ground withered away. For this reason, the baffled residents requested for assistance from Koubou Daishi. A plan arose in the great master's heart.

The great master and the Enma Daio of the underworld negotiated to open the path leading to 'the other world' in the cave of Enoshima on the night of the full moon, allowing Inagi to meet with the dead Nami one last time. The condition for Inagi to meet with Nami was to never play his flute ever again. Inagi agreed to the terms, feeling an unparalleled happiness for he could see Nami again.

On the night of the full moon, the path leading to 'the other world' opened on Enoshima. Seeing this, Inagi ran down what was called the 'Path of the Night Devil' and eventually met with Nami once more.
However, something terrible happened after that. Inagi was unwilling to part with Nami, he pulled Nami's hand wanting both of them to return to the human world together.
The dead were exulted over this 'opportunity to return to the human world', and grasped onto Nami's hand firmly without letting go. Behind Nami, several hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of the dead were dragged along, like prayer beads the length was unceasing. In the end, Inagi was running back to Enoshima pulling Nami along together with the dead.

Koubou Daishi, who was extremely shocked by this, had no choice but to blockade the exit of the fuuketsu with the Kongouiwa in order to not let the dead return to the human world. Inagi was shut in the fuuketsu, furthermore the Enma Daio was infuriated by his misdeed and separated him from Nami, locking him up in the rock prison of Hell for all eternity.
Thus the fuuketsu was sealed in this way. But it was said that thereafter, on the night of every full moon, one could hear the sound of Inagi's flute calling out to Nami from the cave.

"'The other world' is said to be located under Fuji in this legend. Later myths also state that a priest together with the Nichiren holy priest had once opened the 'Path of the Night Devil' and sealed it back again, but this is not certain. Right now, there isn't any place in the cave that looks like a fuuketsu."

"..."

Takaya was drinking a cup of coffee that had a little too much milk added, after he finished listening to Yoshimoto, he placed the cup in his hand, and revealed a complex expression.

"It sounds similar to the legend of Izanami..."

This legend tells of Izanami who, in order to take back his wife, went to Izanagi who was in Hell. Although there were certain differences between the contents of the two stories, by examining the names of Inagi and Nami, it was possible that this myth originated from the legend of Izanagi, although one could not be entirely certain.

But the flute-playing aspect of Inagi resembled the legend of Orpheus in Greek mythology. In order to revive his dead wife, Eurydice, Orpheus journeyed to the underworld. Although the endings are different, this myth appeared to be created by combining elements from these two legends.

The myth blended aspects from Buddhist and Shinto beliefs, this was also in keeping with the influence of Buddhism on these islands, there was an extremely wonderful texture about it.

"I never knew there was such a story." Takaya said, then his face grew serious again. "So what does the Satomi intend to do with the fuuketsu? It can't be that they want to re-open the closed passage and connect the path leading to the other world?"

"Exactly that, 'it can't be'. Uesugi-dono." Yoshimoto said with a tough intonation. "The Satomi want to reopen the 'Path of the Night Devil', and summon the dead to return from the other world."

"What...!"

Takaya and Kotarou were speechless.

"What is going on? The path leading to the other world, this sort of matter..."

Takaya, wanting to say 'How can this possibly be achieved', suddenly recalled Natsuo's words.

--The Enma Daio appeared in our dreams to warn us. Saying that Enma Daio wants to buy Enoshima, thus the way to protect ourselves was to leave immediately.

--After a month, the cave's fuuketsu will open, the dead will emerge from Hell.

Is that what this is about...!

As expected, the Satomi had caused all of them to have this dream. In that case, the workers of Kyoutake real estate must all be related to the Satomi.

"Why would the Satomi want to do this..."

"I don't know. Moreover, this opening a path to the other world, in all honesty I don't believe it is possible to do so."

Yoshimoto argued firmly.

"Whatever is mentioned in a legend is merely a myth, even if it were that Koubou Daishi, I don't believe it's possible to do so. But the Satomi now want to put into effect the 'Method of Connecting to Hell' that Koubou Daishi had carried out."

"'Method of Connecting to Hell'...?"

"Yes. They want to recreate that curse, and open up a way to the realm of the dead. If this can really be done, the situation would be terrible. Perhaps the Satomi want to use the power of the dead from the other world to make up for the deficiencies of their own military strength."

As he was overly astonished, Takaya was speechless for a while.

"If this is true, they can't be allowed to succeed. Enoshima would become the most important stronghold of the dead for the Satomi. They can't be allowed to do this... Uesugi-dono. Can you lend us your assistance? To stop the 'Method of Connecting to Hell', we can't rely on our power as it is insufficient. I hope that you will help us."

Takaya widened his eyes as he listened to Yoshimoto's fervent words.

How is that possible...

The path leading to the other world, could it be really opened? But, if it could really be done. If the dead could really be brought back from the other world.
Based on the various ideas of everyone, it would collectively lead to a disastrous situation. Souls that were once proceeding to the other world, would be able to return to this earth. If the soul could return again, there was a strong possibility that this would negate the significance behind the 'power of exorcism'.

Is it really possible...

"..."

Takaya pondered with a dignified expression.
But after a while, Takaya restored his calm, he lifted his face suddenly.

"Kagetora-sama...?" Kotarou, who was beside him, voiced out, Takaya spoke with a cold expression.

"...I understand. I will assist you all."

"Really! Uesugi-dono!"

"What do you have in exchange?"

"?"

"We are lending you our strength, then what will you offer us? The Uesugi doesn't act in the interest of any particular onshou. We won't assist you all unconditionally."

Yoshimoto grew silent. Even though he had given thought to the fact that the other party would not just plainly help him, Yoshimoto had not prepared a possible answer.

"...I see. Then may I ask Uesugi-dono's opinion, what would be the best trade to make?"

"Information on the Takeda."

Takaya replied immediately, alarming Yoshimoto.
Takaya continued to speak without any change in his expression.

"I hear the Miura and Takeda have become allies. What is the Takeda doing at the moment? This is a problem in their own territory, they can't be just standing by like spectators now can they?"

"..."

Perhaps the Takeda had some reason for being incapable of doing anything even if they wanted to find a countermeasure.
It seemed like Shingen showed respect to Ujiyasu from a distance. For that reason, even though Enoshima was under his domain, he did not interfere as he pleased. Hence it was possible that he merely shoved this problem to Miura Yoshimoto. Yoshimoto's relationship with the Takeda was partly that of a subordinate. Yoshimoto was in a disadvantageous position and thus could not refuse the Takeda. If he refused, the alliance with the Takeda would be broken, worse still the Takeda could dispatch its forces to extinguish the Miura. Furthermore, if Enoshima became the stronghold of the Satomi, Yoshimoto's territory of the Miura Peninsula would be in danger.
In order for a small and weak power to survive, there was no choice but to take risks. Even if the risk was considerable, they still needed the power of the Uesugi.

"I can help you guys." Takaya had seen through the weakness of the opposite party, he urged. "But you must tell us about the Takeda. As long as you do this little bit..."

"... I understand." Yoshimoto replied with slight unwillingness. "I accept this condition. Then, let's go to the cave together. To stop the Satomi's curse."

***

When Ayako's car reached Enoshima, it was broad daylight. The reflection of the morning sun flickered between the waves of the Shounan sea.

"Kadowaki-san!"

Natsuo, seeing Ayako and the other arrive, rushed over hurriedly, as though she wanted to roll down the hill road.

"Please come to my house quickly! Father... Father is going to die!"

"I know, I know!"

Ayako's hand was yanked along by Natsuo, as they ran towards Natsuo's home. Natsuo's father was inside the room on the second storey of the house, painfully rolling about and wailing. His hands and legs were being held down by the neighbors.

"Arghhhh-----!"

Howling like a ferocious beast, Natsuo's father struggled in agony. He had torn apart his pajamas, roaring loudly that 'It's burning, it's burning' however he could not do anything about it. In fact, his skin was indeed issuing an incredibly high heat, the people holding on to him could not touch him with their bare hands, rather they were using a cloth or other kinds of materials to buffer the heat.

"! ...This is!"

On the chest of Natsuo's father was the distinct appearance of the Sanskrit character 'En'.

No...!

Ayako understood. This was clearly some kind of curse. Someone from somewhere had placed Natsuo's father under a curse. She could sense the unceasingly crushing force of the waveform. This particular sensation hovered above the Sanskrit character on his chest as well...

There's no mistake.

"Kadowaki-san!"

Reiko, who came bursting into the room, felt the energy of the curse that permeated entire the room, she could not help but contort her face.

"This spiritual waveform...!"

Ayako took notice of her, she turned her head. "What's the matter? What happened!"

"It's the same as what remained in the house of the Gotou city councilor. That place had the remnants of a similar sort of curse energy. There's no mistake, it's the same curse!"

The 'Method of the Juuou Night Devil'...!

Ayako was now well-aware. This was also known as the external method of killing in ten days. A curse where every night, the ten Kings of Hell would appear in sequence, and the vitality of the cursed victim would be drained away drop by drop. She had not seen the use of this curse in nearly ten, no, hundreds of years. The main foundation for the capacity of this curse came from the Enma Daio, the power of this Tenbu, following the various methods of administration, it could display an extraordinary lethal power. People who have been dealt with this curse would suffer the pain of the eight circles of Hell. This was a curse that could not be implemented unless the executor possessed a considerable amount of strength.

"Yarrghhh!"

Hearing Natsuo shrieking, Ayako lifted her head. The figure of a person had appeared in mid-air in the center of the room, very much like a projection. It was riding a water buffalo, like a Buddha. Among the lotus petals it held in its hand, there was another small face. At first instance, it looked like the Goddess of Mercy, but Ayako knew what it was.

Enma-ou...!

The curse had almost reached its final stage. If she did not hurry, Natsuo's father would really die.

"Kadowaki-san! Please save Father, save Father! I beg you...!"

Can I do this...

In a split second, an uneasiness stirred within her thoughts. If she failed, there was the chance that she would suffer the counterattack of the curse. This would depend on how powerful the opposite party was. But this was not the time to hesitate.

Is there any Tenbu here that can lend me some power...

Ayako pondered for a while, then it suddenly occurred to her.

Enoshima... That's right. Benzaiten!

This was extremely powerful. As long as she could apply the 'Vitality of the Land', she might be able to smoothly deflect the curse. But she could not do this on her own. She had to carry this out from two different positions for it to work. Someone who could do this...

Ayako turned towards Reiko.
"Nikaido-san. I have something to request of you. Can you use a shingon?"

"Shingon? ...Mmm. I can."

Although Nikaido was a religious consultant by profession, she came from a bloodline of Shingon temple priests, she had gone through all sorts of religious practices as a child, she was particularly expert in the Shingon system.

Ayako took out something resembling a koppa shin from her handbag, but it was a pair of puppets that were smaller than a koppa shin. Ayako traced out the Sanskrit characters of a shingon onto it with an oil brush, she gave one of them to Reiko.

"Take this to the Houanden. Offer it before Benzaiten, then chant the shingon continuously."

"I just have to chant the shingon right?"

"Yeah. Anyway, don't let anyone into the main hall. Pray to Benzaiten with full concentration. Until this curse douji cracks open."

"Can he be saved in this way? Can the curse be stopped?"

"We have to deflect the curse." Ayako glared at the figure hovering in mid-air. "This will be a wrestle with the enemy who delivered this curse. We have no other alternative. Go quickly. Start when you're ready."

"I understand!"

"I'll take you there! Follow me!" Natsuo stood up courageously, she lead Reiko, running towards the outside. Ayako sat cross-legged in a Buddhist manner and placed the puppet known as the curse douji in front of Natsuo's father.

"Hold him securely, until this ends!"

Ayako's compelling impulse overwhelmed all of them, everybody nodded. In order to disperse the 'Method of the Juuou Night Devil', Ayako herself began to recite a curse. The power of a curse had to be deflected by another curse. Ayako knotted her fingers in a mudra, she began to concentrate her spirit.

Reiko was shown the way by Natsuo, they rushed down the slope of the Omotesandou, eventually coming to the Hetsunomiya. Natsuo hurried into the society's office, took the keys for the Houanden and opened the door.

"I beg you! I beg you to save my father!"

"I understand. I'll put forth my utmost efforts."

Reiko replied, she entered the octagonal hall and closed the door. Positioned in front of her was the wooden eight-armed Benzaiten and the beautifully-colored nude Benzaiten constructed by Yoritomo. Reiko placed the curse douji that Ayako had given her between the two figurines, setting herself on the floor at the same time. But it seemed as though the eyes of the Benzaiten reflected Gotou, causing Reiko to feel uneasy all of a sudden.

Want to deflect the curse.

Even though Kadowaki Ayako had said this, could this really be done? She resigned herself to the fact that she had better knowledge of curses than the ordinary person, moreover she knew how to deliver several counter-curses. But she had never encountered such a distinct and violently strong waveform of a curse.

If this fails, we would be affected by the curse as well.

Was it really okay? Could she really believe that woman? But...

I can't just sit here and ignore it.

Reiko inhaled deeply, she secured her consciousness and knotted her fingers in the mudra of Benzaiten. After she exhaled, she centralized her spirit.

Until the puppet cracks open.

She began to chant the shingon.

Outside the Houanden, Natsuo peered inside anxiously. A voice that sounded like a reading of the scriptures could be heard. She had been warned not to open the door.

...What are they doing?

Natsuo did not understand at all. But they were indeed trying to save her father.

Goddess Benten, I beg you...

Natsuo brought her palms together in the Benten prayer that she was accustomed to ever since she was a child.

I beg you to save Father...

At this point in time, a group of men emerged from behind the society's office. They were attired in Western-styled suits. One of them, who looked like the chief, followed behind the rest of them, he gave out instructions to his subordinates wordlessly. The Kyoutake real estate badge was pinned to the collar of their suits. The men did not head for the society's office, instead they proceeded to the Houanden. Then they approached Natsuo, who was praying in front of the hall.

"?"

Natsuo suddenly felt a murderous energy near her back, she lifted her head.

"What!"

Natsuo wanted to turn around but her mouth was unexpectedly covered with something like a moist cloth that came from behind.

"!"

She was startled, she wanted to yell but in that moment the strength in the lower part of her body left her.

Huh...!

Natsuo fell towards the front. The man held onto her body from behind. Natsuo's vision grew dark, she lost her consciousness.
Someone was looking down at her from above--.

Kaizaki Makoto slowly knelt down, and carefully allowed her lie on the ground. Then he turned to his subordinate and said.

"Take her away."

His subordinates beside him approached, they carried the drugged Natsuo, taking her down the stone steps away from that place. Kaizaki stood up, facing the Houanden. Even though he looked as if nothing had happened, he had seen what was happening inside.

"..."

But Kaizaki turned his face away, he turned his back towards the Houanden and ordered his remaining subordinates.

"To the cave, follow me."

Moving in a perfectly agile manner, Kaizaki turned and walked towards the front. His subordinates followed behind him.

***

Takaya, Yoshimoto and Kotarou had reached the southern cave of Enoshima by electric boat.

The sky was bright and cloudless, there was a deep shade of green on the horizon, the reflection of the Miura Peninsula could be seen clearly. Even though the sky was sunny, the sea breeze was stronger than yesterday, the waves were also discernibly less calm.

Takaya got off the tiny boat, he faced the towering cliff on the left side with resolution. By walking along the wall of the cliff from this place to the western side, they ought to be able to reach the cave.
Removal works should be currently underway in the cave due to the incident of falling rocks yesterday, but judging from the peaceful and quiet atmosphere, the operation had yet to begin.

"Please look at this, Uesugi-dono."

Yoshimoto, who followed behind him, gave Takaya the Mikkyou hougu. It was a fairly heavy and ancient dokkosho. It should originally be golden in color, but it had lost its radiance, it had become a dull, clay-yellow. However, on careful inspection, there were some marks engraved onto its surface.

It was the Fudoumyouou shingon.

"This is..."

"This is the legendary dokkosho that was inserted into the deepest level of the cave, used by Koubou Daishi when he blockaded the 'Path of the Night Devil'. I heard that it resulted from the transformation of the sword grasped by Fudoumyouou underground. It was discovered in the deepest section of the cave, it could really be considered as evidence that this legend is not merely a legend. It is said that as long as this dokkosho is buried underground, the 'Path of the Night Devil' won't be opened ever again."

It was like a safety device. As long as this dokkosho remained underground, the road leading to Hell would definitely not open. However, if the dokkosho was here then...

"...Are you the one who pulled this out?"

"It wasn't me. It was the subordinates of the Satomi."

When the Satomi had the cave in their hands, they found this dokkosho and had pulled it out.

"I spent quite a lot of time and effort in order to get hold of this."

"So you were here yesterday to bury it back?"

Yoshimoto nodded.
"To prevent the 'Path of the Night Devil' from opening again, this dokkosho must be inserted back into the cave. Then, before they begin the 'Method of Connecting to Hell', we should bury this cave."

"Bury the cave?"

"Yes. Legend has it that Koubou Daishi sealed up the fuuketsu completely with a certain mass of rock. That is the Kongouiwa, born from Fudoumyouou's superhuman strength, no matter how strong an excavator or explosive is used, it can't be dug out. However, it can be destroyed by the employment of the 'Method of Connecting to Hell'."

"..."

"We must insert this dokkosho and take the extra measure of burying the cave so that the Satomi won't be able to execute this curse. It won't be good enough to just plug it with falling rocks, we have to let the entire bedrock collapse. To make the cave impossible to open again."

"Together with the wall of the cliff...?" Takaya's expression grew solemn, he turned back towards the wall of the cliff. "It will require a considerable amount of power. Additionally, if this isn't handled properly, it will cause the buildings on top of the cliff to collapse as well."

"But apart from this there's no other way of sealing the conjuration. It won't be enough until we let the cave disappear."

Takaya was continuously gazing at the floor of the cave.
From the looks of the current situation, there appeared to be no other method.

"After all the money spent on reopening the cave, now..."

Although this was an immense undertaking, there was no other way.
Takaya turned towards to Kotarou.

"Wait here. Naoe."

"But, Kagetora-sama..."

"We don't know what can happen. Prepare the boat so that we can leave at anytime, in case the need arises we can withdraw immediately. Also, watch for any activity on the sea. Alright."

After he finished speaking, Takaya proceeded ahead. But once he reached the cliff, he turned around once again, looking at him as though he wanted to say something.

"..."

Kotarou quietly looked back at Takaya. Takaya pursed his lips together, he walked ahead once again, disappearing behind the side of the cliff. Kotarou gazed after Takaya with a solemn expression.

Takaya and Yoshimoto came to the rear end of the cave rocks. There was no sign of anyone. Only the sound of the waves that tossed about repeatedly, bringing about a strange calm.
It was gusty, the winds ruffled their hair.

"A kekkai has been set up." Takaya surveyed the surrounding environment, muttering. "I keep having a bad feeling about this. It'd be better to avoid any direct conflict."

"Then what should we do?"

"..."

Takaya calmly pondered. Just when he was starting to think of any measures they could carry out.

"What are you two doing in this place?"

All of a sudden, someone called out from the front, both Takaya and Yoshimoto got a fright, they lifted their faces. As they turned around, the figure of a man appeared from behind the rocks in front.

"!" Takaya's shoulders jerked violently. "You are...!"

"Entry here has been prohibited. Where did you people enter from? There should have been a signboard stating the danger of falling rocks, and that you should not approach, right? There should have been a rope surrounding the stairs as well."

He articulated in a deep and low voice that caused one to feel at ease, the other stepped down the staircase like a model.
The man who had appeared was Kaizaki.

"You...!"

"Uesugi-dono!"

Takaya heard Yoshimoto's voice and spun around. They did not know how long they had remained hidden, about ten men appeared from behind the rocks. Every single one of them had been possessed. They were the 'Yachou'.

"...What did you all plan to do by coming this cave?" Smoothly stepping in their direction, Kaizaki said in a low voice. "Would you please return the vajra to us? Miura-dono."

"!" Yoshimoto was startled, he widened his eyes. "How do you know who I am...!"

"We've already seen through your actions. Yes, just like how the Enma Daio of Hell is completely aware of all the sins the dead have committed during their lifetime."

"What did you say...!"

"Do you know of the jouhari?" Kaizaki folded his arms, he looked at them as he spoke. "That is the remarkable mirror that the Enma possesses. Capable of reflecting the accounts of all the merits and sins accumulated in a person's life, an object that resembles a video tape."

"..."

"We, the Satomi, are the Enma's emissaries. The jouhari mirror can tell us about you whenever we wish."

The Satomi...!

The other boldly stated his name. Yoshimoto retreated behind Takaya in fear as though he wanted to hide. Standing face to face, Takaya revealed his caution and regarded the other party fiercely.

"Kaizaki, you... who are you exactly!"

"My overcoat... I see you're wearing it for me."

Seeing Takaya wearing the overcoat, Kaizaki smiled. Takaya exclaimed 'Ah' in surprise, he clutched the lapels of the overcoat. Feeling as though his weakness had been exposed by the other party, Takaya's face flushed red in anger, as though he was resisting, he stared at the other ferociously.

"Seems a bit too big. But it really suits you."

"...You..."

"You are the Uesugi general, no? Uesugi Kagetora-dono, I trust. --Ougi Takaya."

"...!"

Not expecting the other to know him, Takaya was startled. He did not expect the other to be familiar with his present name as well. He felt as though he had really be reflected in the jouhari, Takaya's sense of wariness grew even more intense.

"Who are you exactly? Kaizaki."

Kaizaki looked directly at Takaya with a firm expression in his eyes. Takaya's eyes brimmed with power, he conducted a spiritual examination of Kaizaki. But, as expected, he did not detect the sense of a hyoui rei. He did not resemble a kanshousha either.

"How do you know my name? How are you related to the Satomi?"

"I am a descendant of the Satomi clan." Kaizaki replied without any fear. "When my ancestors were resurrected, I offered the strength my body inherited through the generations. If you people obstruct our Satomi clan..."

Kaizaki slowly unfolded his arms, stepping closer towards them.
"I would have to crush you people at all costs."

"...Crush us?"

"The people who possess the 'power', are not restricted to those of the previous eras. Do you wish to test the 'power' of a modern user? Kagetora-dono."

An orange-red radiance arose in Kaizaki's hand. The sea wind howled in his ears. Takaya concentrated on the movements of the other party, like a beast he tensed his body in a vigilant manner.

"I heard that you're a very strong person, Kagetora-dono."

"You..."

"I'm rather interested in the power of a kanshousha, I really wish to spar with you once. I truly want to understand the sort of object that is the power of a kanshousha who has undergone possession over the course of 400 years. In the end, I wonder which side is stronger?"

"!"

There was a brief smashing sound around his feet. A crack appeared on the rock beside Kaizaki's feet. Like sharp arrows, disc-shaped pieces broke away from the rock and floated in mid-air.

"Please be mindful. If you underestimate the power of a modern person, you will get injured."

Kaizaki squinted, Takaya felt like he had seen the will to fight burning in the depths of his eyes. In an instance, Takaya's body was filled with power.

"Come!"

Kaizaki yelled, his narrowed eyes suddenly widened. The fragments of the rock immediately charged towards Takaya. Takaya clenched his teeth, releasing an incantation against the splinters, pulverizing a good portion of them.

"Damn it!"

Yoshimoto shouted out. He had attacked Kaizaki by releasing a Nen Nami one step before Takaya. But Kaizaki did not even have to open a Goshinha, after hindering Yoshimoto's spell with his right palm, he waved his arm strongly.

"Wahhh!"

Yoshimoto covered his face, his body was thrown backwards in a huge arc and struck against the rocks behind him.

"Yoshimoto!"

Takaya shouted, Kaizaki immediately attacked with an incantation. Takaya deflected it by enacting a Goshinha wanting to scatter the spell, but his Goshinha was suddenly overwhelmed by a suppressive power that emitted a buzzing sound.

"Nnnh!"

Intense plasma like fireworks sprouted out into the air. In that crucial moment, Takaya had smashed through the other's spell, but as a result of this reverse force his body grew unstable. Taking advantage of this opportunity, the 'Yachou' moved into action. Seeing the 'Yachou' beginning to make their move, Kaizaki unexpectedly shouted.

"Don't interfere!"

As he yelled, Kaizaki released an incantation to threaten the 'Yachou'. Takaya, who had finally re-stabilized his body, felt apprehensive.

This man...!

Was really strong. He had a strength several times more powerful than the ordinary onshou. His power was nearly on the same level as a kanshousha.

This brat...!

"How about we take things a little more seriously?"

Not a trace of Kaizaki's breath was chaotic, a highly dense incantation was concentrated in his palm. What surprised Takaya was the fact that Kaizaki's spell gradually morphed into a real sword.

"!"

Just like the katana of Bishamon. Takaya looked at the other with an incredulous expression on his face.

"You... that is...!"

"Prepare yourself, Uesugi!"

Kaizaki brandished the physical sword and charged towards Takaya. Takaya raised his eyes fiercely. He wanted to release his stored 'power' in one go. But at this very moment.

Takaya's shoulders trembled, his power had slipped out of his hands again. He felt that familiar sensation of losing control. Thinking 'Shoot', in that instant a break was exposed in Takaya's actions. Kaizaki did not let the opportunity provided by his [Takaya] hesitation escape.

"...!"

Kaizaki's Nen Nami grazed past an unguarded Takaya. Protecting his body, Takaya was startled, he lifted his head and looked at Kaizaki. The turquoise sword in Kaizaki's hand was approaching. There was no way of evading it...!

!

Striking straight into the brain. As though he had been struck by lightning, Takaya sustained an intense hit His consciousness grew foggy as a result of the impact, a sheet of darkness appeared before his eyes, Takaya collapsed to the rock ground in this way.

"..."

Kaizaki let the sword vanish in his hand, he approached the fallen Takaya.
Kaizaki had not used his sword. Kaizaki had used an inductive attack - that is, impacting Takaya's brain directly with a spell to cause him to faint.
Takaya was unconscious, he lied there without any signs of movement. Kaizaki crouched down beside him, his arms circled around Takaya's back and held up his upper body.
Kaizaki let Takaya's head roll upwards by itself and lean against his chest, embracing his limp body with both his arms.
Takaya's lips were slightly opened, his closed eyes did not stir.
Kaizaki carried his body gently as though he was sheltering Takaya from the sea breeze.

"How should we deal with this person? Kaizaki-sama."

A 'Yachou' standing in front of the fallen Yoshimoto asked, Kaizaki looked over there.

"Take him back. Bring him onboard the ship."

"Kaizaki-sama, allow me to..."

Another subordinate extended his hands towards Kaizaki who was carrying Takaya, Kaizaki declined by shaking his head.

"That's not necessary. I can carry him."

After that, Kaizaki walked towards Chigo fuchi. A man walked down from the aforementioned stairs.

"Looks like it has been settled. Kaizaki."

Kaizaki lifted his head silently. Standing there was the son of Satomi Yoshitaka, who was at the Tatsumi mansion in Kamakurayama a few days ago: Yoshiyori. Yoshiyori, still maintaining his disrespectful demeanor, looked at him and said.

"I was worried about how things might turn out so I came here to take a look, but seems like I was just over-anxious. Now this is how a descendant of our clan should act. Worthy of praise!"

"..."

Kaizaki quietly returned Yoshiyori's gaze, after saluting briefly, he carried Takaya towards the harbor.

"Here. This is the room key. Bye, Kagetora. I've already informed the receptionist to call us when Nagahide and the others return. About the gohou douji, don't worry yourself over it. Have a good sleep after bathing. Understand?"

Ayako's words resembled that of a guardian who was looking after a child, giving the card key to Takaya.
The two of them had returned to the hotel in Yokohama. This hotel was situated in the area of the Sakurakicho harbor. Since Ayako's own residence was nearby, she could actually return home, but she decided to stay with Takaya as she was worried about him.
Takaya held the overcoat left behind by Kaizaki to his chest.

"What should we do with that? Or do you want the hotel to return it for us?"

"...No need. It's okay. I'll take it."

"Really...?"

Ayako had appeared worried ever since they returned.

"Well, Kagetora. Don't you do anything strange just because you've quarreled with Naoe, alright? D-Don't be thinking of seeking comfort with other men. If there's anything, I'm still here okay."

"Idiot. What are you saying!" Takaya smacked Ayako's head. "My 'powers' are fine. Don't you all worry. Have some trust in me."

"I trust you. But even though I trust you, you're the type of person who bottles up everything inside your heart. Rather than let your imagination run wild, it'd be more comfortable to just say it out. If there's something bothering you, then just spill everything out frankly. It doesn't matter if it comes out as whining. I'm a fairly good listener."

"...I understand." Takaya smiled. "I'll ask for you when the time comes."

"Kagetora..."

Takaya wished her 'Goodnight', turned around and headed to his room.
As expected, it did not work. Although Ayako had spoken in a sincere manner, it was probable that Takaya had not taken her seriously. This was constantly the case. Was he feeling that he could not expose his weakness in front of his subordinate, Haruie, who stood beside him?

You're really an idiot...

Ayako understood. Takaya would certainly not reveal his own pain to anyone other than himself. He would definitely not expose this in front of others. If nobody forcefully dug it out, Takaya would absolutely not express himself. If no one compelled him in this way, he was completely incapable of showing his true self.
Perhaps he was waiting for someone to uncover his innermost feelings.

If it were you, you would've done this earlier right, Naoe?

At this sort of moment, Naoe would, even if he had to relentlessly pull apart Takaya's chest, pry into his true feelings without any hesitation. He would peel open that tightly-shut door to his heart in a violent, barbaric manner to liberate him.
However, there was now no one who could do this for Takaya.

But Kagetora's current depression, truly has to do with the fact that you're not here.

Ayako understood. Takaya had been attracted by the conduct of that unfamiliar man. Ayako, who had been watching from the side during that time, felt that Takaya's weakened strength had been taken advantage of.

That's terrible...

Of course, it was not likely that the other deliberately behaved in that way because he knew of Takaya's condition. But it was terrible all the same.
The covering of his back with clothes that had the warmth of a human body.
Takaya was in great danger after having been treated in this way. His heart, which was already growing frail little by little, would completely crumble in one breath. He had allowed her to see his tears. This could even be considered violence. Doing this sort of thing to someone, who did not have any immunity against warmth in the first place, was unacceptable.

Ayako faced Takaya's room, she pursed her lips in concern.

After entering the room, Takaya, now alone, did not want to take a shower, he merely sat on the bed.

Really...

Takaya himself was extremely confused.
That he would unexpectedly shed tears due to a small matter. Not even he had expected that. Just by sensing another's heat he had wept, this matter truly did not make any sense to him. More than this nonsensical matter, once the extent of his loneliness suddenly occurred to him, Takaya felt himself to be truly pathetic to the extreme, he could not help but laugh bitterly.
Takaya only realized it after he had cried. The object Takaya had been searching for all along up until now. That object which he was pursuing, that object which made him irritable as he could not acquire it, that object which he thirsted for.

The answered appeared in this way with such ease.

--The sea breeze is chilling. Please take care.

He felt that he had once heard this sentence from somewhere, Takaya rummaged through his memories. Who had uttered those words?
Takaya picked up the overcoat beside him, he embraced it with his arms, and placed it around his shoulders again like how it was at the cave. A gentle warmth immediately surrounded his body.

"...Ah, yes." Takaya smiled softly.

It was during that time...

It was during the hour of dusk at Lake Chuzenji, the very words that Naoe had said to him. He had uttered 'Please take care'.
On that dock where the cold breeze from the lake was blowing, Naoe had placed his jacket on Takaya's body, and murmured in this way beside his ear. He had been telling him 'not to expect any solace', only in that particular moment had he been tender towards him. Only that sentence had been affectionate, had been warm together with the jacket placed on his body... Takaya could not forget it.

Why...

Drooping his head, Takaya closed his eyes quietly.
Crying because of the heat of that unknown stranger, what was the matter with him? If this continued, he would soon be seeking someone capable of embracing him regardless of the person's identity.

...It shouldn't be this way...

Takaya unwittingly bit his lower lip.
How nice if he did not know of the warmth of others.
If he was unknowing, then he would not seek for it.
He was simply like a family cat that had lost its home. His body that once knew of a place of rest, shivered in the cold winds outside, searching for that tender warmth in his dreams.

It shouldn't be this way...

Who had messed him up to this extent? Why did he suffer the manipulation of other people?

It was all because of Naoe. Takaya had no reason to happily acknowledge the person that he had become. Neither did he have any intention of admitting it now. He should be someone who did not need anyone. He ought to be able to continue to live by himself. He had never wished to bind others to him, he had never boasted of his power... It should be this way.

But he cannot help but recognize that he was indeed showing off his power.
His entire body was filled with fear of the day he might lose Naoe...
His true self was gradually being exploited - that naked desire, the endless hunger, that day Takaya was forced to be forthcoming with the other.

It's all because of you.

Saying to him 'It is fine to wilfully pursue it'.
Because you opened your arms and allowed me to do so. It was because you let me behave like a spoiled child, therefore it was unacceptable. I truly wish to pursue it. Furthermore, I am pursuing it.

It doesn't matter even if I pursue you, right?

You said that you wanted me. Repeatedly desired me, did not want to leave me, but remain by my side for eternity. That you would not leave me in solitary. I yearn for you to behave in this way, you would allow it, wouldn't you? You have always allowed me to do so, right?

Is it wrong? Naoe...

Takaya believed this.
It did not matter how haggard Naoe became - how profound his desperation, in the end... Yes, he would always offer his unconditional warmth, deeply and tenderly embrace him with no wish for reciprocation.

--It's all right.... Don't be afraid.

I understand you more than anyone else.

Even much more than himself. Because this man had an excessive amount of self-respect, in the presence of a person that was more outstanding that he was, he would feel a sense of inferiority that was several times greater than other people. But Naoe did not end it because he felt inferior, he was always glaring at the place above him, constantly propelling himself to a higher position to achieve his goal. If he was more blundering than others, he would continue to pursue it, there must come a day when he would become more perfect than others. But because he wasted his fortitude for the sake of this intense ambition, occasionally he would lose sense of his true self.

But I know...

No matter how distorted he [Naoe] became because of himself - resolutely believing that this distorted attitude was his [Naoe] real self, Takaya would still understand. Understand that in the end, it will be made visible before him, his [Naoe] true character.

Embracing him tightly, conveying his warmth,
Showing his deep love without restraint.
Like the love that parents would shower on their child.

--I will stay beside you forever...

Uttering in this way.

--To protect you.

Telling him from the depths of his spirit.
He [Naoe] did not notice the true nature of his own love. Because he had been thinking too much and was exhausted, he had lost himself. But Takaya could always see it. Naoe's feelings that had survived until the very end, Takaya could always sense it with his skin. He perceived it with his entire body.

But...

It should not be this way. Takaya did not understand the current Naoe. No matter how long he waited, Naoe did not reinstate the manner he ought to have. Even if he took the initiative to request for his heart to be touched and stretched out his hands, Naoe would merely fleet past him. Words that he should understand were not conveyed to the other. The object that ought to reflect in his eyes, Takaya had yet to see. Naoe no longer stepped into Takaya. He obviously longed for him to come to his side - he should come, however it seemed as though he had forgotten the method of touching him. He did not approach him. Neither did he touch him.

Why...

No matter how coldly Naoe had treated Takaya, Takaya had never felt this way before. Even if Naoe deliberately ignored Takaya's existence and let him be hungry and thirsty, a certain shard would still be pierced into Takaya's heart somewhere and remain inside him. Naoe now did not have this. Even if Takaya sought for him, Naoe did not have any response, let alone a shard. Even if he wanted to fix the connection between Naoe and himself, the hands that he extended out would only float in emptiness, there was nothing to grasp onto. Could it be that he had lost the ability to hold onto him?

...Have I become abnormal...

The feelings that he sought for inadvertently came from another person's body.
The other was someone he was not acquainted with. The other probably found it convenient. Perhaps he had allowed another to see the extreme cold of his loneliness, so much that it had even tempted the other to take pity on him.

--Please take care.

This is probably what you wanted to say, right? Naoe.

Takaya pressed the lapel of the overcoat draped across his shoulders against his mouth.

Isn't it only right that you should be the one to warm me? Naoe.

He was trembling in the iciness yet Naoe did not notice. No matter how much he spoke his mind, Naoe still did not pay any attention. The way in which they had communicated with each other, that once surpassed the medium of language, could not transmit anything to Naoe now.
The core of tenderness that Takaya desired, the hunger and thirst had multiplied many fold. Whenever Takaya had wanted Naoe to touch him in the way he always craved for, Naoe would consistently give him a warmth that brought a miraculous relief to his body.

Why has it become this way...

Takaya did not understand.
Since when did their estrangement begin?

Or was it...

Takaya pondered, he felt a sense of dread.

Do you truly have no feelings for me anymore?

--Why did it have to be me?

The words he had once uttered echoed in his ears.

--If it was someone other than myself, he probably would not feel so much pain in his love for you. As for someone who can only lose to you...

Takaya felt a burst of sorrow, he closed his eyes.

--I hate you...

Am I... not even worthy of that now...

Was he not even worthy of his hatred now?
Feelings of a longstanding fear invaded Takaya.
It was always at the bottom of Naoe's eyes, his defiance. Now, he could no longer see it. Since when could he no longer see it? That was simply not an expression that he had overcome his defeat to Takaya. It merely disappeared. His yearning, his struggle... He could not sense it now at all. That pair of eyes, had an expression devoid of any feelings for Takaya.

Is it because of me?

Was he now something that had lost its ability to bind Naoe? Had he become someone unworthy of Naoe's attachment?

Is it because I've lost my strength...

Takaya felt a spate of coldness.

Are you disappointed in me?

Disappointment... This was the word Takaya was most afraid of. Disappointing others. It should not be this way. To cause him [Naoe] to feel disappointed in him [Takaya], to make him feel contempt for him.

Takaya was originally an individual who was extremely doubtful of himself. He did not want to become an arrogant person with no reason for having a high self-esteem. What gave him confidence, was the ability to support the people around him.

Naoe was more certain of Kagetora's strength than anybody else. So much that his own self-worth was crushed as a result of Kagetora's power. The more Naoe struggled painfully in that way, the more faith Takaya had in his own power. While he hoped to liberate Naoe, he also felt proud. This was his own strength.

Naoe had said that he worshipped him.
That was not only something definite. Consummate, desirable, furthermore he believed Kagetora to be the absolute. This was an intense emotion. So much that others called this his 'absolute' power. Perhaps, to Takaya who doubted himself, after being worshipped by another in this way, he could for the first time be sure of himself.

But. This had already... crumbled.
Starting from the bottom of his feet.

Are you disappointed in me? Naoe.

Takaya shivered in fear.

Is that why you act like this? Naoe.

Because I am no longer ideal...
Because I no longer have what you long for.
He was increasingly dissociated from Naoe's ideal appearance.
Is that why Naoe was dismissive towards him?
Is that why he could not see anything in Naoe's eyes?

Have I changed...

Or had Naoe himself changed?
Has someone more worthy of your 'worship' appeared? Because when compared to that person, Kagetora appears more incompetent. Is it because of the emergence of an 'ideal appearance' far more outstanding than I am? Thus you feel Kagetora too deficient to even threaten you? Thus you no longer hate Kagetora? Thus your love has become faint? Thus you are no longer bound?

Then what am I to you, Naoe!

Takaya nearly cried out, he clenched his fist.
If this was really the case, then there was really nothing more selfish than this. In the end, Naoe only loved himself. He merely wanted an ideal. He only loved his [Takaya] perfection. An object such as an ideal, can change anyhow, as long as there exists the passage of time. It can change very easily. Even if he [Takaya] took a chance on this worship with his life, it could only be considered as a temporary, vain attempt. No one would believe in this sort of thing.

...So is that why I can't give you anything?

Takaya covered his face and curled up.

--Always receiving, never reciprocating. Unceasingly accepting what others offer but you never give back anything.

--You never give back anything yet you seek for other people's free charity.

--Even though you have lived for 400 years, you are just like a child.

No...
It's not like that.

Up until now, he never returned anything to Naoe because...
He could only believe that even if he did not return anything he could pay back with his unceasing longing. What was called a 'loyal' heart. If not for this way of no reciprocation or recompense but a continuous payment in the form of yearning, Takaya had no way of believing in this.

Perhaps Takaya had been probing all along. Continuously probing in the long period of time, constantly ensuring that even if he did not look back, Naoe's love would always be projected towards his body.
He felt afraid, so much that he could not even look back. Should this love disappear sooner or later..., if he would feel despair from losing this degree of love, it would be better not to look back from the very beginning. If Naoe's desire left for 'an object that captures my interest more',
Upon turning around, his outstretched hand would end up in a void. If there was a chance that he would suffer this sort of betrayal,

I won't look back...

There was no reason to look back.
This was not to protect his self-pride.
It was not like that...

He could only feel his breath with his back. Before he was fully aware of it, he was already seeking for it. Had he left him and gone somewhere far away? Does he still pursue him [Takaya]?

He told himself that it did not matter when he had left. It seemed like he [Naoe] had prepared an escape route for his love for him. In order to deal with the other's loss of interest in him, to not feel pain after he leaves him, Takaya constantly told himself, even if he really departed... he [Takaya] would not be wounded because of this.
Thus, he would not look back. In the endless period of time, he bore Naoe's longing with the shape of his back.

--You don't return anything, you only want to continuously obtain love from others.

And yet you have constantly pursued this sort of person for 400 years.

Takaya replied to Naoe's words that appeared in his mind.

--What an arrogant person.

Yes, I'm arrogant...

Arrogant to the extent that he had no complaints even when thrown away. Even if you leave me, I would... have nothing to say...
As long as there was no way to abandon his [Takaya] cowardice and willfulness, this sort of relationship would one day produce a chasm.
A person who can endure someone who does not reciprocate but continuously pays back with yearning, obviously does not exist.

This is something that he should have known, right?

But, I...

Feeling the heat of the other person that lingered behind on the soft material of the Cashmere coat, Takaya closed his eyes. His torso recalled Naoe's body temperature. Those calm unmoving words, he suddenly heard that hallucinatory voice.

--Takaya-san...

Feeling Naoe call out his name in his ears, Takaya shut his eyes.
The sensation of being held from behind returned. He still had not weakened to the point where he had to depend on illusions. Despite admonishing himself, the hallucinations carried on at will.

No...!

He was not yearning for the skin of others. But his body violated against his will and was in a tumult. The sensations he had felt when Naoe had forced himself onto him during those several times, the parts of his body that remembered slowly began to heat up. Takaya hastily suppressed the pain that had begun to draw out on his body.

It's not like that...

His stiff hand began to move, Takaya wriggled on the bed. He felt a feeling of numbness wander inside his body. His fingers defied his own will, gradually sliding up his inner thigh. Takaya wavered.

"No..."

He did not want pleasure. He only wanted warmth. He only wanted the feeling that he would always be hugged even if he did not turn back. But his body had begun to desire a more profound object. It was as if the perfume fragrance remaining on the overcoat, that he had smelt from somewhere before, had been mixed with a love potion. An emotional impulse bubbled up from the depths of his body. Takaya clenched his teeth, he could not control himself, he yelled.

"It shouldn't be this way!"

He grabbed the Cashmere coat on his body, and fiercely flung it against the wall.

"..."

His breathing was in disorder. Takaya's eyes were full of tears, he stared at the overcoat that had dropped to the floor. He felt extremely miserable. He felt extremely irreconcilable.
Feeling empty, Takaya sat powerlessly on the bed once more. At this moment, the telephone beside the pillow suddenly rang.

"?"

Takaya lifted his head, in order to calm his delirium, he waited for a while before answering the phone.

"Hello---..."

***

The doorbell rang unceasingly. Feeling irritable and impatient for the people inside the room to open the door, Takaya forced the automatic lock open with an incantation and stepped inside.
Once he entered the room, he felt slightly dizzy when he caught the odor of blood, he covered his nose.

"Nh..."

"Saburo-sama!"

The Fuuma ninja accompanying Kotarou stood up. Kotarou was seated on the bed topless, treating the injury that he had received moments ago. Kotarou indicated to his subordinate to retire with his eyes, his subordinate saluted Takaya in a fearful manner and exited the room.

Takaya and Kotarou were left in the room.

"Kagetora-sama."

Takaya's shoulders quivered, for a split second he wanted to retreat. He was afraid of the smell of blood. Kotarou had a dignified expression, Takaya did not dare approach for a while, but still, with a worried face, he moved to Kotarou's side apprehensively.

"Is it okay... your wound."

"Yes... it is fine. It was treated immediately. Nothing too serious."

His upper right arm had been bitten by the cursed dog. Although Kotarou mentioned that it was nothing serious, the wound looked considerably deep in reality. On the bed were black needles and a beige sewing thread stained in blood. That was the ninja's emergency kit. Kotarou was stitching up the wound by himself. Placed beside him was the shell of a clam. The green paste inside the clam was a special ointment of the Fuuma.

Seeing the marks of a newly sewn fresh wound, Takaya experienced another fit of dizziness, but managed to show restraint.

"...That's good..."

Takaya had dashed over here in a flurry when he heard that 'Naoe was injured' over the phone. Assured that Naoe was relatively safe, he heaved a genuine sigh of relief. Takaya sat down as if his strength had escaped him.

"My deepest apologies. The Takeda had set up a trap. Our ambush at that place had been made known, the Atake ship changed its port of entry, and we were ambushed by Yamagata Masakage."

"Yamagata... The chief general of the 24 generals of the Takeda?"

"Yes. It was that Yamagata."

Yamagata was the ferocious general of the Takeda, second to none. He was an outstanding and elite figure who supported the Takeda clan in both politics and military affairs, he was brave and vicious, not to mention resourceful, so much that some enemies would abandon their post once they heard the battle cries of Yamagata's ambush. Yamagata had been in charge of the advance guard at the Battle of Mikatagahara, because of his astonishingly fierce military offensive, Tokugawa Ieyasu had also once felt that death was upon him.

"Yet another troublesome person has been resurrected."

"...It seemed like Nagahide pursued him. I went looking for him, but could not find him."

"I see..."

Kotarou wanted to dress the wound, Takaya fetched the bandage from the side. It seemed like he had decided to help him wrap his wound.

"...There is no need. It is fine, I can do it myself."

"It's okay."

Takaya uttered, he began to wrap the bandage around Kotarou's arm in an awkward manner. Kotarou revealed a troubled expression.

"Kagetora-sama..."

"You bastard." Takaya was angry. "Getting this injury unexpectedly, what the heck were you doing? It doesn't seem like you at all. Didn't I mention not to get injured when I'm not around?"

"..."

"But," said Takaya, lowering his head slightly. "If you were injured in my presence, that's even more inexcusable."

"Kagetora-sama..."

Kotarou understood. Since Naoe's death, Takaya had grown fearful of blood. It was possible that he remembered the smell of blood after Naoe had been shot and was bleeding. His actions would become strange for an instant, possibly because he was close to recalling that particular scene.
Takaya grew silent. In the silence, only the hands were at work with the bandage. His movements gradually grew slower, and finally... stopped.

"Kagetora-sama..."

"You don't call me 'Takaya-san' anymore..."

"?"

Kotarou displayed a confounded expression, Takaya slanted his head slightly, he smiled lonesomely.

"Why?"

Kotarou obviously could not reply. He was not aware of this matter. Even though he knew that Naoe did not address him as 'Kagetora-sama' but rather 'Takaya-san', Kotarou had not given much thought to this. (Of course, he was careful not to call him Saburo-dono). Takaya lowered his gaze slightly.

"...For you to address me in that way, I don't... exactly hate it..."

"Is it better... to use that name?"

"..." The smile disappeared from Takaya's lips. That impatience and anxiety burned in his heart again. "It's not a matter of which is better."

Kotarou stared at him. Takaya's tone became sharp.

"Then why did you call me 'Takaya-san' previously? It would've been fine to call me 'Kagetora-sama' all along, wouldn't it? Was it because you were worried about my amnesia? Was it only because of that?"

"..."

"Then there was no need for you to continue with 'Takaya-san' once my memories were restored, was there? Why? Why did you call me 'Takaya-san'? Why don't you call me in that way now?"

Kotarou was silent. It was impossible for him to answer this. Takaya was angered. Wanting to allow himself to cool down, he exhaled greatly.

"I'm not saying that it's better one way or the other... It's just that, I..." Takaya lowered his gaze, finding it difficult to speak up. "I've always felt... that I really liked... the time when you called me 'Takaya-san'---..."

Once he finished, Takaya closed his mouth. During ordinary times, he would definitely not let these words slip out by accident, let alone say it willingly. Compared with feeling humiliated, Takaya felt even more disconcerted that he would utter these words and quivered, his mouth was upturned in a grave manner.

Although Kotarou was thinking 'then I shall call him in this way', he did not know why he could not address him as such like how Naoe did. Even though he only had to open his mouth and voice out 'Takaya-san', he felt a certain kind of resistance, he could not articulate it.
Kotarou was confused over what he should say next. Seeing him in this way, Takaya could no longer keep silent.

"...I don't understand you."

Kotarou trembled slightly, he looked at Takaya.

"I don't understand why you've become like this. I can't feel anything from your body. Your current eyes don't reflect anything."

Kotarou was startled. Takaya grabbed Kotarou's shoulders and looked into his eyes.

"You can see me right? You can see right? Take a good look at me! Naoe, look into my eyes. Take a good look into my eyes!"

Kotarou stared at him widely, his face had stiffened as he faced Takaya. Takaya exhaled, with a powerful glare that nearly bored into Kotarou's eyes, he looked at him.
Kotarou gulped, his heart began to pound fiercely. This was the first time for Kotarou to be looking at Takaya eyes directly at so near a distance.

This is...

The Fuuma leader was nearly frozen to the spot unconsciously. That expression in his eyes resembled a sharp probe, as if he wanted to prod into another's soul. Relentless and without reserve, an expression that plundered into his heart and viscera as though it wanted to dig out everything. Kotarou felt cold sweat flowing down his arms. Takaya was extremely desperate. He desperately searched in the depths of Kotarou's eyes.

But in the next moment, there was disappointment in Takaya's eyes, he stammered.

"...Why..."

"..."

"There is... nothing..."

Kotarou felt a stroke of sharp pain in his chest, causing him to feel baffled. What was that pain? Kotarou did not understand.

"Have you given up..." Takaya asked weakly in an imploring manner. "Don't you feel anything anymore? You no longer care about whatever happens to me?"

"...whatever happens to you... this..."

"Even now, I haven't given up. Even now, I'm still thinking. How to handle this in the best possible way. How to handle this in the most normal way. I've always been searching, always been thinking, striving this much! But you don't care about anything anymore! You've simply given up! Why...!"

Takaya shouted due to his frenzy.

"Weren't we just about to start again! Didn't we want to start searching again! This isn't the end, it's the beginning! The two of us together! Didn't we want to find our ideal way of existence!"

Takaya could not control himself anymore, he finally yelled out.

"Everything was just about to begin!"

"..."

Kotarou's face was pale, he could make the slightest bit of sound.
Due to his hysteria, Takaya was crying, however he did not wipe away his tears.
Kotarou could not comprehend this at all. He could not bear Takaya's passion. Rather, he had been completely overwhelmed, let alone bear it. Kotarou had fallen into a state of semi-shock.

Takaya was in pain over his lack of strength, and hung his head.

"Are you no longer interested in me..."

"..."

"You... don't want me anymore?"

Takaya asked with a bitter intonation, biting his lower lip, he began to undo the buttons of his shirt one by one. Kotarou did not understand what he was trying to do, but Takaya drew open his shirt in front of him, exposing his wounded chest. Kotarou gasped.

Takaya looked at him with a sorrowful expression, he asked once again.

"Don't you feel anything..."

"..."

"Don't you have any interest in me anymore..."

Kotarou could not figure out what Takaya, who had exposed his body, was talking about.
Takaya hung his eyes in grief, he grabbed Kotarou's hand and pressed it against his skin. Kotarou was startled, Takaya placed his hand over Kotarou's and gently used that hand to caress himself as though he was stroking his scars.
In truth, Takaya was no doubt unwilling to carry out this sort of wretched act. But Takaya felt that, apart from this, there was no other way to determine Naoe's true feelings.
However, it was unlikely for Kotarou's hand to move without prompting.
Once Takaya was aware that the other had no response, he calmly released his hand.

"Where have things gone wrong..."

"..."

"Why have things turn out this way? ...Tell me, Naoe." Takaya muttered with a weary expression. "What are you thinking right now..."

Kotarou could not reply. He could not comprehend why Takaya would want to do this sort of thing either.
For Kotarou who would not embrace anyone other than for reasons of physical need, this was a matter he could not fathom. What would Naoe have done? In front of Takaya in this condition, what sort of measures should be carried out? He did not know. Kotarou had no clue.
That night, on the isolated island in the Inland Sea of Japan. The scene inside the cave appeared in Kotarou's mind.
Why did Naoe want to embrace Kagetora back then?
Why did Kagetora so painfully want to be touched by Naoe?

"...What is meaning behind this doing?"

At this moment, Kotarou was in confusion, like an actor who had forgotten his following lines. He had forgotten that he was currently playing the part of Naoe, and questioned Takaya.

"Will it do as long as I have feelings? Is it correct to feel sexually towards you at this moment?"

"...!"

Takaya was shocked, his entire face turned red. Kotarou's overly cryptic reply caused Takaya to feel puzzled for an instant.

"...You... What's the matter? Naoe..."

"What is the best thing I should do? Will embracing you be fine? Will it be fine to start now?"

"What do you mean by fine..." Takaya was increasingly baffled.

"I was not the one talking about this, was I? Why would you say these words? I am asking you, how do you want to do it?"

"How... to do it....?"

Kotarou pondered for a while. No matter how hard he thought it was still impossible for him to comprehend. Nevertheless, Kotarou considered the actions Naoe might carry out, organizing them in a formulaic way, he mulled over the matter.

Takaya could not take it anymore.
Lifting his head, Kotarou was alarmed.

"Kagetora-sama..."

"I've had enough." Takaya's tear-filled eyes were full of indignation. "I won't bother about you anymore! I won't pursue you anymore! I won't hope for anything from you! A person like you, you don't have to stay by my side anymore!"

"...!"

"Just go and die somewhere! Traitor!"

Takaya shouted fiercely and stood up. But Kotarou had unknowingly grabbed his hand. Kotarou forcefully pulled Takaya's hand over as though he did not want him to leave, Takaya lost his balance, the two of them collided into each other, crashing onto the bed.

"...Nnh!"

Takaya got a fright and wanted to get up, but Kotarou pressed onto him with all of his strength.

Takaya widened his eyes in shock. "...Naoe..."

"As long as I have feelings then would it be right?"

Kotarou, who was always calm and without emotion, was now staring at Takaya, breathing hard.

"As long as I want your body then would it be right? If I do this, then can I be closer to you!"

"..."

Looking up at Kotarou, Takaya probably felt that something was different. His face stiffened as he widened his eyes, he shook his head as though he was saying 'No'. But Kotarou did not let him go.
Kotarou buried his head in his neck, Takaya struggled, wanting to push away Kotarou's head.

"Stop... it..."

"...As long as... I do this...!"

"You're... heavy..."

Takaya pushed back Kotarou's shoulders with his utmost strength, wanting to escape to the side, but his chest was held down by Kotarou, he could not move. Feeling his soft lips slide down his neck, Takaya desperately turned his head away and shut his eyes.

"...Let go... of me..." Takaya uttered in a coarse voice, panting. "Who... are you..."

Kotarou gasped in shock. Takaya looked really strange. His face was turned to the side and he was gasping painfully.

"A person like you... I..."

"..."

Kotarou was at a loss. He thought that Takaya had undone his hypnotism. Takaya's eyes were closed, his brow was creased in a miserable grimace as he lied on the bed.

"...Saburo-dono..."

Despite addressing him in this way, Takaya did not hear it. He looked like a feeble young bird, near death, lying powerlessly beneath Kotarou's body. Kotarou slowly lifted his upper body, moving away from Takaya. Takaya only turned his eyes towards him. Kotarou stood up from the bed.

"Please forgive me for my rude actions."

Apologizing without much emotion, Kotarou regarded Takaya in a perfunctory manner.

"Kagetora-sama."

Kotarou called out, stretching his hand towards Takaya.
Takaya turned his face towards him, he held onto Kotarou's outstretched hand with apprehension. Assisted by Kotarou, Takaya sat up on the bed.

"..."

Takaya was gazing continuously at Kotarou's face. Kotarou looked at Takaya's face with his usual expressionless countenance. Takaya moved his lips, calling out his name.

"...Naoe..."

Kotarou knitted his brows as though he was feeling pain, he quietly nodded.
Takaya closed his eyes wearily, he drooped his head.
Kotarou stood beside him, he continued to look at Takaya in this way.

Meanwhile, Ayako had slipped out of the hotel very late that night, and arrived at the 'Floating Pier' behind the hotel, which was the maritime passenger transportation center.
It was deep into the night, there was no sign of the lovers that usually occupied the bench in that area possibly because of the cold sea breeze.
As she listened to the waves crashing against the pier, Ayako turned around to face the space devoid of any people.

"Come out. This place should be fine, right? Don't covertly follow behind, it's about time you come out for a little chat. Sister."

"..."

As though responding to Ayako's words, a woman attired in a short waist coat appeared from the darkness. It was Nikaido Reiko. After spotting Takaya and the others at Enoshima, she had followed them all the way here, watching each and every one of their actions. Apparently, Ayako had been aware of her presence ever since.

"You don't look like a subordinate of the onshou. Who are you? Why are you following us?"

Reiko did not look panicky. She probably had the feeling that the other had likely discovered that she was following them. Reiko focused her attention, she solemnly stated her name.

"I am Nikaido Reiko. I'm in the process of investigating the curse that is related to the death of Gotou, a member of parliament."

"Curse..." Ayako frowned. This was not an issue that the average person would casually speak of. "Who are you? You don't look like the police either."

Reiko took out a black identification tag from her coat, opening it to show Ayako. It was an ID card with a photograph, very much like that of a driver's license.

"I'm a special investigator from the committee of the National Public Security. You all are important witnesses for the occurrences at 'Strange Area Designated #36' that we're in charge of. Kadowaki-san."

She knew Ayako's name. Had she inquired at the reception?

"Ougi Takaya." Reiko said. "Can you let me meet with this youth? It's about whether he's involved in this curse incident, I have a lot of questions to ask him."

"What happened?" Ayako looked clearly displeased. "Are you suggesting that we're the ones who carried out the curse? Don't talk nonsense, why would we want to curse some congressman?"

"You mean to say that you all have nothing to do with this?"

"Of course we don't."

"Then why did you go to that cave?"

"To investigate something. What's with the cave again? The cave and the curse have..."

Leaving her sentence half-finished, Ayako uttered an 'Ah' as she grew aware of the implications.
"Don't tell me, that congressman who was killed by the curse had opposed the plans of the board?"

"The plans?"

This time, it was Reiko who felt suspicious.
"Are you referring to the tourism reconstruction plans? You even know about this? How did you all know about this?"

"This matter is getting troublesome."
Ayako did not pay attention to the other's vacillating thoughts, she began to groan.
"Those brats really went so far as to do this sort of thing."

"Those brats... Do you know something? Could it be that you know who the criminal is?"

"Say, sister." Ayako smiled amiably. "Let's not stay in this freezing place, want to come to my room? My lodge mate won't be returning tonight, so there's one empty bed. Let's discuss this over a cup of coffee."

Ayako's eyes were serious.
"I want to ask about the case regarding the city councilor who got cursed."
