"What did you say! Kagetora has been...!"

Kadowaki Ayako shouted into the public phoneso loudly that the entire cafe shook from her voice. Chiaki Shuuhei had contacted Ayako and related the incident at the Katou shrine to her.

"How can that be... how are his injuries? They're not life-threatening, are they! ...What? You don't know? Don't shit with me! Why aren't you with Kagetora! What the hell are you doing!"

Following Ayako's indignant reprimand, she was told of Akemi's capture and updated on the situation in Kumamoto. Her expression grew more serious.

"...I understand. Once I'm done here, I'll immediately head over to Kumamoto. Leave Kagetora to me... You just deal with that situation. Yeah... it's fine. We can leave the rest to Yagami."

After a few more sentences, Ayako hung up. Ayako's expression when she returned to her seat was one of desperation. Yagami asked worriedly.

"Is something the matter? Kakizaki-sama."

"I'm heading to Kumamoto immediately. I was told that Kagetora was seriously injured and sent to hospital..."

"Kagetora-sama...! What happened!"

"Kagetora's opponent must have been very powerful if he was so badly defeated. Still, his powers haven't been very stable lately..."

"Did Kagetora-sama battle with an onshou!"

"Apparently, he's seriously injured, unconscious... As I said before, just two of them would be too dangerous!"

Ayako slammed the surface of the table violently. Yagami showed no reaction to the shaken cup and spilled coffee, his face was pale from the severity of the current situation.

"And yet... Kagetora still...."

Ayako and Yagami were currently in Hakata. They had been investigating the disappearances of the followers of the Fire Sect. After inspecting the site of the fires in Tokyo and Beppu, they had come to the third scene in Beppu. That same day, they had visited the headquarters of the Fire Sect located in the Sawaraku residential district.

The headquarters was known as the 'honorable shrine' to its followers. It was a cramped, wooden bungalow. The halls were extremely narrow, included among them were the 'Seat of Power' and the 'Seat of Worship', each a place of worship covering an area of six tatami mats.
One of the disciples, an elderly man, had guided them around. In the Fire Sect, the follower delegated as the shrine priest was known as the 'Sect Guardian'. The elder said that he was responsible for subsidiary duties of the 'Sect Guardian' and thus stayed there. However...

--Passed away?

Ayako and Yagami could not help but ask when they heard this from the elder.

--What was that, what happened?

One week before their followers went missing, the Sect Guardian of the Fire Sect, Ikeda Katsuya, had passed away. Ikeda Katsuya was already 80 years in age and had been suffering from heart disease. He had been alternating between his own residence (ie. the 'honorable shrine') and the hospital for the past year, thus there was nothing questionable about his death. However... just a week after his death, cases of their young followers going missing began to occur one after another. This stirred doubts. Did this have something to do with his death?
Ayako and Yagami had asked the elder about those young followers.

--They were really devout believers.

The elder had smiled as he replied.

--Every year, on the day of the 'Gosaiten', they would surely come over to help out. Our followers hail from various parts of the country, so it is difficult for everyone to get together. However, unlike other youngsters, they show a lot of enthusiasm in their participation every single time. Especially Seitou-kun...

The elder had remarked.

--Seitou?

Ayako remembered him as one of the missing persons.

--You mean Enoki Seitou? The follower from Hakata.

--Yes. When Seitou-kun was in high school, his parents died in a traffic accident. He has gone through much suffering despite his youth. And, perhaps, for this reason, he was very close with the Sect Guardian. The Sect Guardian probably thought of him as his own grandson. He loved him dearly.

--May I inquire about Sect Guardian Ikeda's family?

--The Sect Guardian has no family.

The elder had smiled again in his answer.

--The Sect Guardian had no wife, thus the followers were like family to him. He was a very calm and tender man.

Ayako and Yagami had exchanged glances. Indeed, placed in the 'Seat of Power' was a small tablet with a picture of the deceased and his appearance was not so much like a sect founder as your "neighbor's grandfather" or "a kindly old hermit."

--About those fires and missing cases, I would like to know if you have any idea as to what exactly is happening? They seem like an omen or something...

--No idea...

The elder had bluntly replied, slanting his head.

--It must be because they were summoned by the God of Fire.

--The God of Fire?

It occurred to them that the Fire Sect did regard fire as a religious symbol of worship. However it was unlike the other major religions that worshipped fire. Moreover, open burning was not allowed inside the building, thus they usually lighted a fire known as a 'gojinka' inside the glass casing on the altar. It was frequently used during religious services or festivals.

The God of Fire? Are they referring to the Takeiwatatsu no mikoto?

Ayako had come to this conclusion as the Takeiwatatsu no mikoto was also regarded as the deity of Mt. Aso's crater. The elder did not show any sign of worry at the disappearances; he had even surmised that 'this might happen if the gods had called upon them' to explain the strange phenomenon of 'people flying into the sky'. He did not take the matter seriously.
Ayako had felt as though she had failed to get what she wanted. Kotarou had remarked that it was a covert religion, thus Ayako had expected a shady group akin to some sort of underground organization. But, judging from the elder's manner, it did not seem that way. It felt like an institution expounding a set of beliefs, and in doing so regarded itself as a religion.
Or perhaps she felt this way due to the moderate replies of the elder... Nevertheless, there was nothing openly suspicious about the Fire Sect.

"If that's the case, there shouldn't be any problems if I leave the investigation of the Fire Sect to you." Ayako said to the 'Ken En Leader', Yagami, as she wore her coat hurriedly. "I'm going to Kumamoto now. I should be able to catch the limited express train."

"Yagami would like to go with you!"

"No." Ayako firmly declined. "If any hyoui rei enters Kumamoto, they risk immediate capture."

"But then Kotarou...!" Yagami retorted angrily. "Ah... I beg your pardon. Hasn't Kotarou-dono gone to Kumamoto to see Kagetora-sama! If a Fuuma can do it, there is no reason why it should be impossible for the Uesugi's 'Ken En'...!"

"He..." Ayako strained her lips painfully. "He's special."

"By measure of strength, I am most certainly not inferior to Kotarou-dono! Does Kakizaki-sama intend to let that Fuuma remain by Kagetora-sama's side for the rest of eternity! That sort of person is incapable of protecting Kagetora-sama. Isn't Kagetora-sama currently on the verge of death...! We 'Ken En' are the only ones who can protect Kagetora-sama!"

"We don't have a choice! You know this as well as I do; right now Kotarou is Naoe in Kagetora's eyes!" Ayako snarled back hysterically. "To Kagetora, that guy is Naoe! Even if you can tell at one glance that he is a fraud! Be it his face or voice... even the fact that he's a hyoui rei, Kagetora has disregarded all of that, he firmly believes that Kotarou is Naoe!"

"Then let Kagetora-sama return to his original self!"

"We obviously can't do that, why do you think this has been tolerated for the past two years!"

"..."

Yagami shut his mouth, feeling discontented. Ayako was aware that the newly appointed 'Ken En leader' had an extremely strong dislike for Fuuma Kotarou. They were both ninjas and, as an outsider, Kotarou's ability to stand in the position of trusted aide and recipient of his master's respect and love caused extreme dissatisfaction in Yagami.

It's not like I don't understand your feelings...

Ayako clearly understood Yagami's passionate respect for Kagetora. In fact, it was closer to infatuation than respect. Yagami worshipped Kagetora almost religiously, never having the slightest doubt or criticism of Kagetora's every word. Ayako, too, had exceptional faith in Kagetora, but in comparison with Yagami's obsession, she was two or three times less crazy.
Just a single mention of Kotarou would toss Yagami into a bout of indignant rage and pacifying him was tricky business.

"Anyway, you should continue with the investigation of the Fire Sect. We still haven't acquired evidence on that situation involving people flying into the air."

"Kakizaki-sama."

"Please do as I say. Considered this Kagetora's... command...?"

The reason for the abrupt end of the sentence was her sudden realization of an extremely important point in what she had said. Ayako pressed her mouth. Why hadn't she noticed it before?

"What is the matter? Kakizaki-sama."

"Descend from the sky... Just now I said flying to the sky... didn't I? Descended from the sky!"

--All of the eyewitnesses mentioned the same, strange incident.

That was what Chiaki had said on the phone. At the Katou shrine, people had descended from the sky like angels, saving Takaya and the others.

People descending from the sky. Very much like winged angels...

It sounded similar to the eyewitness' testimony of the fire scene in Kurume. She was told that the missing follower of the Fire Sect, Saeki Ryouko, had flown to the sky without a word, simply as though she had grown wings.

Descended from the sky...

--They're now at the hospital, accompanying Kagetora...

Ayako gasped. The wingless angels who had saved Takaya, could they be... could they be...

"Could they be the followers of the Fire Sect...!"

"Eh?"

Ayako grabbed her wallet. She stood up kicking the chair away, pushed her way through the crowd in the shop, and ran to the phone once again. Even inserting the phone card proved too much for her patience, Ayako speedily dialed the number to the hospital that Chiaki had given her. Once the line was connected, she immediately said.

"Ah.. Hello! The patient sent to your hospital by the name of Ougi Takaya...! I'm Ougi Takaya's relative. Yes, that's right, that's right! His condition...! Is he safe now!"

Yagami was momentarily terrified by Ayako's excessively frantic movements, but he immediately gathered his wits and ran to Ayako's side, sighed and quietly waited for the response. Ayako gripped the receiver tightly, so much that her hands had turned white. She was waiting for the reply.

If there's some relationship with...

Her heart was pounding from agitation, about to break out of her chest.

If the Fire Sect members have something to do with the Yami Sengoku...!

Ayako could not tell how long she had waited before she finally got the answer.

"He's... dead... ?"

Yagami heard Ayako repeat the answer she received.
She took a deep breath.

Ayako muttered stiffly. "You've got.. to be kidding me...?"

***

The room, covering an area of six tatami mats, was very cold.
Although a round-shaped electrical heater had been placed at one corner of the room, Tetsuya had no wish to switch it on. Did he not, in the slightest bit, find the room freezing?
He sat on the floor with a pale face.

"From that day onwards, everything grew strange."

Tetsuya was seated in front of Chiaki, and started to talk albeit with hesitation.

"Ever since the Hi-taki no Shinji, everything just became a mess."

Five years ago, in early autumn, when Tetsuya was barely twelve...
His younger sister had been chosen as the bonfire maiden.

"Bonfire maiden?"

"Yeah." Tetsuya discussed in a muffled voice. "My home... Yakuinbaru at Aso city. Every year, from August to October, they will honor the patron god - it's known as the Hi-taki no Shinji festival, a custom of the Shimo shrine since ancient times. During the festival every year, they'll select a young girl to be locked inside the bonfire hall for two months to burn the firewood for the gods."

"And that's the bonfire maiden?"

Tetsuya nodded.

"In order to prevent the gods in the Shimo shrine from feeling cold and delay the early frost, fires have to be maintained to keep them warm. That's the significance of the festival."

The young girl chosen was known as the bonfire maiden. She could not be over 15 years of age to be accepted into the bonfire hall. The people responsible for looking after the girl have to be men or middle-aged women. The goshintai transported from the main shrine would be placed under a specially-constructed bamboo canopy in an earthy room, under which the maiden would keep a fire alive. Should an early frost appear within the two months of the ritual, people would say that the fire maintained by the bonfire maiden had grown weak.

"But..., when Hokage tended the fire, the situation was different than usual."

Tetsuya recalled the circumstances of that time.
The year when Tetsuya's sister became the bonfire maiden...
It was said that a string of peculiar events occurred in the bonfire hall, cases where the burning fires took the shape of demons and spoke with Hokage, or that the flames assumed the forms of dragons and flew away to the sky, the rain of golden sand inside the room, the voices of men that were heard the entire night, and so forth. --Apparently, Tetsuya's granduncle, his paternal grandmother, the people in charge of the festival, the Shinto priests and others had witnessed these incidents. A series of queer phenomena had occurred.

--Something disastrous will definitely happen at this year's Yato.
Consistent with the hushed discussions of the adults, on the day of the Yato festival, which served to conclude the ritual, came something that no one could foresee happening in this era.

"Fire... Orochi..."

When Tetsuya finished, Chiaki was wide-eyed. Tetsuya nodded. At the end of the Yato festival, Hokage had stepped into the fire, abruptly burst into flames and turned into a blazing orochi, which then soared into the sky.

"That sounds like some kind of hoax."

Tetsuya wrinkled his forehead, and grumbled. "But it all started from there. Ever since the appearance of the orochi that day, the way our relatives treated Hokage underwent a 180 degree change."

"Change?"

"Yeah. They started calling Hokage, 'Lady Hokage', like they were addressing a princess or some god. They were extremely discreet in their gestures as though they were afraid or something, always calling her 'Lady Hokage' 'Lady Hokage'. Those people who used to think of us as troublesome children also behaved differently, which disgusted me actually."

Not long after, Hokage was taken to the head family, away from her granduncle's home - the Miike branch family. That is, Tetsuya's uncle, Miike Haruya's family.

"...And then your sister went missing a year ago?"

"It must have been the head family." Tetsuya said firmly. "Our family is really odd, sensei! Our relatives would spend the entire day discussing matters in secret! They must be the ones who are hiding Hokage!"

"How can that be? Why would they want to hide her? Why must they hide her?"

"I don't know. But it's probably because..." Tetsuya continued, his fists were clenched. "Because Hokage is related to 'Asara'."

"What?"

"Granny said Hokage is special. She said 'the Miike family has produced an Asara princess', 'Hokage is the Asara princess'."

"You mean to say...! That 'Asara' refers to your sister! Is this letter of threat referring to your sister's incident!"

"I can't think of anything else besides this..." Tetsuya's fists were trembling. "They said that the Miike family is linked to the 'Asara bloodline'..."

"The 'Asara bloodline'..."

"I don't really know what's going on either, ...but that was what Granny said. For the sake of Kihachi-sama, the birth of Asara is a must. That's why we can't break the bloodline. The members of the branch family must devote their lives to waiting upon the head family, should there come a time where one's life must be risked to protect...!"

Incomprehensible words rolled out of Tetsuya's mouth. Chiaki was silent. The situation was heading in an ever more fascinating direction. The key to solving the riddle appeared to be buried in the Miike family at Aso.

"I got it. Miike. So this letter wants you to bring your sister in exchange for Inaba's life. Do you have any idea who might be behind this?"

"How would I know..."

"Well then, even if the reasons are unclear, if Hokage has really been hidden, the people of the head family should know where she is now right?"

Tetsuya was startled, he lifted his head. "Are you going? Sensei."

"We're talking about a person's life here, that's the only thing we can do."

Chiaki took out his car keys from the pocket in his trousers. He looked out fiercely.

"I can't be not saving my precious little students."

"Sensei..."

"Leave it to me, Miike. I definitely teach those good-for-nothing brats a lesson for using kidnap as a threat."

Despite saying that, Chiaki's lips were stiff. From the look of things, the individuals he was up against were no ordinary people. They were a powerful enemy capable of severely injuring Takaya.

Could it be the Ootomo?

If that was the case, would Mikuriya be involved as well? Tachibana Dousetsu, Takahashi Jouun... The Ootomo had so many brilliant military men. Considering that Kaizaki was now their ally, surely Takaya's real identity as Uesugi Kagetora has been made known to them? Or perhaps...

The Oda? ...Perhaps Katou Kiyomasa?

At this point in time, Chiaki was still unaware of Nezu's true identity. But apart from the aforementioned, the number of onshou who wanted Kagetora eliminated was countless. Furthermore, what exactly about the Miike family was responsible for capturing the attention of the onshou?

"...There's no time. Anyway, the hostage's life is the top priority right now. Miike, please take me to Aso."

Tetsuya nodded with a nervous face. The two of them hastily left the room.
The outside was covered in darkness.

***

One hour had passed since she boarded the limited express train from Hakata station. By the time she reached Kumamoto, it was seven-thirty in the evening. Ayako immediately took a taxi from the railway station to the hospital.

It must've been a lie... Must've been a lie...

Nothing is certain until I see it with my own eyes, Ayako told herself. She honestly could not believe what the nurse had told her over the phone.

--Unfortunately, Ougi Takaya passed away just a moment ago.

There must've been a mistake somewhere...

The nurse's unexpectedly sympathetic voice continued to echo in her mind. The nurse had even told Ayako about his moment of death, but she could only desperately shake her head in reply.

There must've been a mistake somewhere...!

She was hoping that the hospital had indeed made a blunder. She hoped that they had mistaken him for another person. Ayako ran into the half-lit building via the night entrance. A nurse was on duty at the reception desk.

"Sorry, I'm a family member of Ougi Takaya who was admitted during the day...!"

"Ougi..., oh yes. Were you the young lady who called not too long ago?"

It seemed like she was the nurse who had answered Ayako's call.

"We have already done our best. Unfortunately..."

"Where is he! Please take me there! Where is Ougi Takaya now!"

"Are you referring to his remains?"

Ayako could barely keep herself from blurting out, "No!"; she struggled to remain coherent.

"Did you mistake him for another person? Was it really Ougi Takaya? Was it really him?"

"There was no mistake. We referred to the photograph in the student manual that was with him. We are certain of his identity."

"You're lying!" Ayako screamed. "Where is he? Take me to him right now! I won't believe this unless I see it with my own eyes!"

The nurse hesitated. "But his body has already been retrieved by his family..."

"What did you say?" Ayako's face was contorted. "That's impossible. His family is in Matsumoto!"

"But the ones who accompanied him said they were his relatives... All of the formalities were completed about one hour ago..."

"The ones who accompanied him...?"

Was she referring to the couple that Chiaki had mentioned?

"Yes, they were here with him throughout the entire time."

Ayako was stunned. Her face grew even more contorted; she was speechless for a brief moment.

What's going on?

Dangerously close to losing her cool out of fear, Ayako's mind was more confused than before. Nevertheless, she did her best to continue.

"If that's the case, they would've left their contact details. Please tell me their names and add..ress..."

Halfway through her sentence, Ayako heard the automatic door opening behind her, she was immediately on alert and turned around. The one who ran in was a tall, bespectacled man wearing a black overcoat. Ayako knew him. Yes, his unexpected appearance startled Ayako.

"...Kai... zaki..."

That man was indeed Kaizaki Makoto. He was panting, with a desperate look on his face and his hair was unusually disordered. This was their first meeting since the incident at Enoshima. She had also heard from Takaya of Kaizaki's collusion with the Ootomo. Kaizaki stopped once he saw Ayako. Something snapped in Ayako's heart.

"Was it... you people...?" Her lips warped as she demanded in a low voice. "Was it... were you the ones who attacked Kagetora?"

Ayako strode to Kaizaki, who had a blank stare on his face, and gave him a resounding slap. Kaizaki's glasses were knocked to the floor as a result of the strike. But Ayako could not care less about them, she grabbed his collar and lashed out at him indignantly.

"So it was really you, Satomi! Conspiring with the Ootomo and inciting those strange incidents! You were the ones who let them attack Kagetora right!"

"...!"

"You murderer! Where have you taken Kagetora! Give him back to me--! I will never forgive you people! I will kill all of you!"

"No, calm down...!"

"I will definitely send all of you to hell!"

"I said calm down!"

Kaizaki yelled back, grabbing Ayako's shoulders suddenly. In a split second, she was suppressed by his forceful strength.

"Kaizaki...!"

"If you are in such a disoriented state, a spiritual search would be impossible for you, wouldn't it! He did not die, he is merely unconscious, he is definitely still alive!"

Huh...

Ayako looked at him dumbstruck, for a brief moment she did not believe what she was hearing. The earnest expression in Kaizaki's eyes was almost frightening as he spoke with Ayako.

"Call out to him continuously with a wave of thought. If he is still alive, he will definitely answer you. Let your nerves maintain your calm and sense of acuity, capture that weak reply well. This should be something that you can do."

"...I..."

"It was the Ikkoushuu. Shimozura Rairyuu is still alive."

"Rairyuu... You mean that Shimozura Rairyuu!"

"That's right. Apparently, he did not die at Itsukushima and has come to Kumamoto. I am currently locating his whereabouts. Leave this matter to the Ootomo, you should first look for Takaya."

"Ah... Ah..."

"He did not die. He definitely won't die."

Ayako was numb. Instinctively, she called out a certain name.

...Naoe...?

The man once again urged her with an "Understand?"; he took out a business card from his pocket, wrote his telephone number on the reverse side, and pressed it firmly into Ayako's hand.

"If something goes wrong, contact me immediately. I will help you."

Once Kaizaki finished, he turned back, immediately heading outside where a cold wind was blowing. Ayako came back to her senses and yelled loudly.

"Wait, Kaizaki!"

Ayako ran after Kaizaki, who had exited via the night entrance, all the way to the parking lot.

What...

Kaizaki merely stood there. Beneath the lamp post in front of him were three men who looked like they were there to deliberately obstruct his way. Ayako was stunned by this strange atmosphere.

"That is..."

"You are Kaizaki, am I correct? The descendant of the Satomi who sought refuge with the Ootomo."

The young man of medium stature, who appeared to be the leader, spoke to Kaizaki. Ayako did not recognize any of their faces. Kaizaki was on guard. The three of them had what appeared to be a katana in their hands.

"Who are you people?"

"The land our troops were set to be stationed at has been invaded by the obstructive Ootomo it seems. We have come to remedy the situation by spearheading the attack."

Large black eyes, dense eyebrows and a profile of sharply demarcated facial features; he was tall and sturdy, possessing the physical characteristics of the men of Kyushu island. The young man stated in a solid voice without hesitation.

"The repulsive Ootomo, lost in exhilaration from acquiring Saga. I will not surrender Kumamoto to you people. If you do not wish to suffer heavy losses, you should leave this place immediately."

"What?"

These people were kanshousha. Furthermore, they were considerably strong.
The moment Kaizaki realized this, the men had drawn their weapons. Their swords emitted pale rays of light which mingled with their incantations, lending a mysterious quality to its radiance. In the next moment, the deep-blue blades shone brightly, giving birth to a tenacious source of incantation power.

"Let us eliminate the hindrance that you are, Satomi!"

The young men shouted as their fighting spirits surged, lifting their swords upwards.

"Kill him-------------!"

They charged mercilessly with dynamic attacks. Kesagiri - the technique of slashing the sword down diagonally from the shoulder at an extraordinary speed.

"!"

Kaizaki, realizing that he was in imminent peril, parried the assault with a Goshinha. Sharp plasma splattered about as Kaizaki's body was flung backwards. This sort of strength...!

Jigen ryuu!

No, despite the similarity, it was different. This is...

Taisha ryuu!

There was no time to think, the other two charged forward. The speed of their kesagiri was so fast it could hardly be seen. Kaizaki desperately evaded their slashes, shooting out incantations, but the enemy was extremely stubborn. No matter how much he drove them back they still persisted. The force of the opponent was sweeping, their kesagiri struck at lightning speed.
Taisha ryuu was a type of kenjutsu utilized by the samurai of Kyushu island during the end of the Warring States era. Death in one blow - a sword technique which concentrated one's entire body strength into the execution of the kesagiri.

"Kill him-----!"

Kaizaki defended himself with a Goshinha in desperation, however the blades were so concentrated with their spiritual power that they promptly shattered it.

"!"

Repelled backwards, Kaizaki tumbled to the asphalt road. These three people were very strong. But there was another factor affecting the tide of this battle. Kaizaki looked a little strange.

"Ch...!"

Was there a discord in the synchronization? He could not smoothly employ his powers. With a great deal of difficulty, Kaizaki again attacked the oncoming enemies with a Nen Nami. But the enemy took advantage of a weakness in his stance when he stood up and struck. Kaizaki shouted as he evaded the hit.

"Who are you people!"

The young man, brandishing his sword with astonishing speed, replied Kaizaki.

"I am Iehisa, the son of Shimazu Toyohisa! Let us see if you can parry the sword of the Satsuma samurai!"

Shimazu Iehisa!

The name was familiar; Kaizaki and Ayako both trembled. He had repelled famous generals of Kyushu island in the past, forcing Ryuuzouji and Ootomo close to the brink of destruction - the Satsuma hero who had engulfed the entire region of Kyushu island with the raging waves of his influence - one of the four Shimazu brothers.

Shimazu has come to Kumamoto...!

"Nnghh!"

With his Goshinha shattered by just one strike from Iehisa, Kaizaki was knocked out. Ayako could not help but call out.

"Kaizaki!"

"This is the final blow!"

Iehisa swung his sword. At that crucial moment, Ayako released a Nen Nami. Iehisa's sword was repelled backwards and he retreated upon sustaining this abrupt hit.

"Who is there!"

"I won't let you commit this outrage!"

An accomplice!

Startled, Iehisa signaled his subordinates to fall back. Ayako ran to Kaizaki. He was unconscious as a result of Iehisa's attack.

"Wait, Iehisa!"

Shimazu had escaped. Ayako held Kaizaki up.

"Hang in there, Kaizaki! Kaizaki!"

No response. The hospital staff had heard the commotion and came running over. Ayako bit her lips, glaring at the darkness on the other side.

Those guys...!

***

"I'm home... Ah, heavy."

Opening the door, Koganezawa Kyouko placed the shopping bag on the floor. She had conveniently stopped by the supermarket on her way back from school. It was quite the exercise. The bag was filled with vegetables, meat and other items, making it incredibly heavy.

"Welcome home, Kyouko. You're back so late today."

Wearing an apron, her mother stuck her head out of the kitchen, Kyouko nodded in agreement.

"I went to buy the ingredients for tomorrow's bento."

"Oh dear."

Seeing the supermarket bag bursting with groceries, her mother's eyes widened.

"That's great. So you intend to make a bento by yourself, how strange. Are you preparing lunch for the entire football team?"

"Of course not. It's for Chiaki-sensei. There will be a practice match tomorrow, so I'm going to prepare a bento-full of affection for Chiaki-sensei--"

Her mother nodded. She then recalled something, and asked.

"Oh right, just now Akemi's mother called. Kyouko, were you with Akemi?"

"Akemi? No, I wasn't. She said she had to go to the dentist today and left early."

"But I was told she hasn't returned home yet."

"Well, she could've gone shopping perhaps?"

Her mother muttered, "Perhaps...", placing her hand on her cheek. Kyouko handed the shopping bag to her mother.

"Put this in ice for me. Ah... my shoulder's hurting again. Is dinner ready yet? Then I'll first take a bath."

After that, she went upstairs.
Kyouko believed that bathing was the most important routine in a day. This was not merely because she was far more vain about her appearance than anyone else, but more so to treat her chronic shoulder ache. Kyouko soaked herself in the warm water, massaging her shoulders.

"It doesn't seem effective..."

Although she has always had this chronic ache, the pain had grown especially severe in the past few months. No matter how much her mother massaged her shoulders, the pain did not subside. At times, it was so painful that she could not even lift her arms. She had been told that immersing in a bath helped to facilitate blood circulation, hence her obsession with bathing. However, it did not cure the ache. Some people had teased her for being like an elderly woman dealing with the problems that came with age, but Kyouko retorted by saying that the teenagers of this era have several times more hardship to endure than the older generations. Nevertheless, her condition did not seem to improve.

"Maybe I should just quit being manager..."

Of course, Kyouko did not realize that her severe shoulder aches was a result of the many mixed spirits attached to her body.

But...

She recalled what happened.

Chiaki-sensei's familiar with the student in 2B, what's going on here?

Tetsuya's words stuck firmly in her brain. Were they relatives? Now that she thought about it, she had also heard strange rumors from her classmates. Apparently, someone had personally witnessed Chiaki-sensei entering a hotel near Kumamoto castle by the back entrance. The schoolgirls stalking him had also seen Chiaki retrieving his keys from the reception. Everyone was in an uproar over whether Chiaki was meeting with his lover but Kyouko did not believe a word of it.

Akemi also said something about it.

About Ougi Takaya. Something about him staying at a hotel.

It can't possibly be the same hotel, right?

A whole series of questions popped up in her head, Kyouko's furrowed eyebrows grew increasingly wrinkled. This incident happened on the same day the teacher assumed his duty, which was a little bizarre on second thought. In fact, the dispute with the executive committee at noon today had involved Ougi Takaya. And apparently that Nezu Kouichi had also been implicated in the matter.

...How weird...

Are they related to each other? Kyouko pouted.

Right, tomorrow I'll ask Chiaki-sensei for answers, until I'm satisfied!

Kyouko thought, clenching her fists in the water. Right at that moment.

"...Huh...?"

A strange sound came from the area around her stomach. Was she too excited? Kyouko thought that her stomach was grumbling from hunger, the image of dinner appeared in her mind.

Grunt grunt...

There was the strange sound again. It was not just a sound; it seemed as though something was crying out.

Eh... eh...

Something was not right. Then, something moved in that same spot. It was a splitting sound; somewhere within her body, there was a deep, fracturing sound. A lump of some sort began to move around in her abdominal area.

"Wa...!"

The wriggling grew more distinct, it felt as though there was a live fish flipping about in her stomach. It grew more intense. Eventually, the area beneath her chest began to tremble with fluctuating protrusions.

"No... what...!"

Her skin began to bulge. Some kind of living thing was wriggling about beneath her skin. That thing began to rock left and right as it climbed up to her neck region.

"Yahhh-----!"

Kyouko could not help but stand up in the bathtub.

"No....! What is this!" She was screaming. "No-----!!!"

"What's the matter! Kyouko!"

The door to the bathroom flung open and her mother rushed in. Kyouko was lying on the bathroom floor.

"Kyouko...!"

The moment she drew near, a black shadow emerged. Her mother lifted her head in shock, several human faces appeared.

"Wah...!"

They were the spirits attached to Kyouko's body, about four or five of them in total. With blanched expressions filled with grudge, the spiritual bodies approached.

"K..Kyouko? Kyouko!"

Her mother was scared and at a loss. She held Kyouko up, wanting to shake her awake. Kyouko's body jolted all of a sudden, then she began to shiver continuously. Finally, with her own strength she stood up again.

"K...Kyouko?"

Kyouko casually brushed her mother's hand away. With her two hands, she pressed against the ceramic floor and stood up by herself. Kyouko lifted her face.

"...!"

Her mother only stared at her. Between the wet, disheveled strands of hair, her eyes had not the slightest trace of anger. Snake-like eyes. Then her red lips curled slightly into a smile.

Takaya: Damn it, this isn't funny anymore. I've had enough of Naoe showing up wherever I work. (sighs) I was really naive to think that earning money would be easy. Guess the only way is to be practical and work hard for it.

[Fast Food Restaurant]
Shop assistant: Welcome, Welcome!

Takaya: Welcome... What would you like to have...

Kid A: 3 hamburgers and 3 milkshakes.

Takaya: That's 3 hamburgers and 3 milkshakes right?

Kid A: What the heck, what's up with the unenthusiastic attitude?

Takaya: Huh?

Kid B: You have to be energetic when working at a fast food outlet!

Kid C: You have no courtesy...

Kid B: Not to mention that foul look in your eyes...

Takaya: What did you say? You little...

Kid A: This guy's scary...

Kid B: Help...

Kid C: Tenchou...

Takaya: Ahh! 3 hamburgers and 3 milkshakes. Got it!

Kid A: That's it.

Kid B: Good for you for understanding.

Kid C: Get going.

Takaya: Ch!

Kid B: Still... didn't you forget to say something?

Takaya: Huh? ...Oh that! Would you like some fries as well?

Kid B: (condescendingly) Nah, don't want that.

Kid C: Is McDonald's the only thing you know how to say...

Kid A: What an idiot...

Takaya: Grr~~~

Kid C: Hey hey, you're making a face, you're making a face!

Kid B: Remember to smile.

Kid A: It's free after all.

Takaya: (forced smile) Hahaha! Thank you for waiting... Hahaha! 3 hamburgers and 3 milkshakes... Hahaha!

Kid B: What the heck is this...

Takaya: A smile, of course, a smile!

Kid C: This guy is really scary...

Kid A: Alright, hurry up with the bill already.

Kid B: Oh brother!

Takaya: 3 hamburgers and 3 milkshakes. That would be 32,095 yen altogether.

Kid B: What?!

Kid C: Is this some kind of bandits' inn?

Takaya: That's strange... Oh, it's 58,300 yen altogether!

Kid A: Tenchou!!

Tenchou: Ah, what do you think you're doing, Ougi!!

Takaya: Ahh, there seems to be a problem with the cash register...

Kid A: You're the one with problems!

Tenchou: I'm really sorry, I'll correct this right away.

Kid B: Oh, so you're Ougi...

Kid C: Wear your name tag properly next time.

Kid A: That's the rule.

Takaya: Grr..

Tenchou: That would be 882 yen altogether, thank you for your patronage!

Kid B: Tenchou, this guy here is no good!

Kid A: Please educate him a little.

Tenchou: I'm really sorry, he's still new around here. Alright, Ougi come here and apologize.

Takaya: (Very unwillingly) Sorry...

Kid B: Ah, it's okay.

Kid C: Pay attention next time, goodbye, and work hard... Ou~Gi~

Tenchou: Thank you for your kind comments... Seriously, please work on it, Ougi.

Takaya: (sighs)

Ujiteru: Poor Saburou... Why is he putting up with such miserable treatment in this place?

Fuuma: Ujiteru-dono, you have been standing by that glass window covertly, spying on the interior, whatever is the matter? Furthermore, your expression conveys fear...

Ujiteru: Is this all that the Uesugi has to offer Saburou? Unforgivable! Saburou... Even if I have to put my life on the line, I must save you from the sea of misery! (waves hand) Make yourself present, Fuuma!

Fuuma: Ujiteru-dono, I have been standing here all this while.

Ujiteru: Then save Saburou at once!

Fuuma: Understood! By the way, have you noticed? There is an unstable presence in the vicinity.

Ujiteru: What?

Fuuma: Please look over there. Hiding himself in the corner of the entrance, that man spying on Saburou-dono.

Ujiteru: That is...!

Naoe: Takaya-san! My gold card can obviously settle the loan for your bike.

Ujiteru: What are you doing here?

Naoe: Oh! ...Onii-san?

Ujiteru: I do not remember giving you permission to address me as Onii-san!

Naoe: Then, Ujiteru-dono, may I ask what brings you to this place?

Ujiteru: I have come to extend a helping hand in the rescue of Saburou.

Naoe: The only thing that can save Kagetora-sama is my gold card. There is no room for Onii-san's interference.

Ujiteru: What did you say?! Is money the end and be all of... You are sorely mistaken to believe that money can solve everything!

Naoe: Haha... Money makes the mare go, without money there's no solution.

Ujiteru: Y-You bastard... Because of the scoundrel that you are, Saburou has...

(Brandishes sword)

Naoe: It seems like you are unaware that brandishing a katana in a public area is a violation of public security.

Ujiteru: Your concern is needless... A kekkai has already been installed using the skills of the Fuuma.

Naoe: In other words, we can have an unrestrained battle. My intentions exactly.

Ujiteru: Prepare yourself!

[Epic Battle]

Ujiteru: Hmph, it is settled.

Naoe: Ah, ah, my gold card, my gold card has been sliced in two!

Ujiteru: Hahaha, look at that sorry face of yours! Now you cannot save Saburou!

Naoe: How dare you... My gold card! (furious) You have provoked me, Ujiteru-dono!

Ujiteru: So?

Naoe: Unforgivable! I will make you regret this!

Ujiteru: You will be the one to regret this!

[2nd Epic Battle]

[Panting]

Fuuma: Ujiteru-dono, three days have passed since the start of the duel! If we do not return to Odawara...

Ujiteru: It does not matter... I have vowed not to rest until this battle is settled!

Naoe: As have I!

Ujiteru: Saburou... I shall settle this battle now and take you back to Odawara...

Naoe: I will not allow that! Takaya-san, as long as I am here, I will not let anyone lay a finger on you! Please do not worry!

Ujiteru: What nonsense!

[And the battle continues...]

Shop assistant: Welcome, welcome!

Takaya: Welcome!

Customer A: One cheeseburger and coffee.

Takaya: One cheeseburger and coffee coming right up! Would you like some fries?

Customer A: Oh, umm, one of that.

Takaya: Thank you very much! That would be 567 yen altogether!

Tenchou: Mmm, Ougi, you've become very proficient.

Takaya: Yes!

Tenchou: Keep it up.

Takaya: Yes! I will do my best!

Customer B: One double burger, one hamburger and 2 cups of ice coffee.

Takaya: Right, one double burger, one hamburger and 2 cups of ice coffee. Would you like an apple pie as well?

Takaya: Not bad, not bad! That's it... Looks like Naoe won't be interfering this time. If I keep working like this, very soon repaying the loan won't seem like a dream. I have to be patient! FIGHT!!

Book 16 Chapter 09 消えた少女

Chiaki stood dumbfounded at the wretched scene before him.
What on earth happened within the confined area of the Katou shrine? It seemed like a storm and earthquake had occurred at the same time.
The roof of the main shrine had been completely ripped off, a large section of the main structure had collapsed, trees uprooted, not to mention the huge craters in the ground everywhere.

This...

This was truly out of the ordinary. Chiaki knew this before reaching the scene as he had felt the impact of the incantations despite the distance. The more intense the clash, the more clearly it could be perceived. This was one such case. Chiaki was immediately aware that Takaya had fought an extraordinary opponent.

At that time, Chiaki was still at the school. He had been handling the chaos resulting from the unconscious students when he learned of the conflict between Takaya and the executive committee members. The huge explosion (at the Katou shrine) happened when he was setting up precautions against possible measures that Mikuriya might consequently adopt. Chiaki disregarded the lesson he was giving and rushed to the scene. However, he arrived too late.

Where's Kagetora...!

The ambulance and police vehicles zoomed over with their wailing sirens. Chiaki forced his way through the crowd of onlookers and proceeded to the actual site. The wounded tourists who had been caught in the crossfire were sitting there in shock. But Takaya was nowhere to be seen.

"Kagetora...! Where are you, Kagetora!"

"Hey! You're not allowed in here!"

Chiaki ignored the policeman's warning, entering the shrine area regardless. There was a group of people gathered ahead. It seemed like they were about to shift the wounded onto stretchers and transport them out. --The person lying on the stretcher was wearing a high school uniform.

Kagetora...!

"Move aside! Hey!"

"Stay back! You'll only get in the way of the rescue operation!"

Chiaki was firmly pushed back by the police officers. Unwilling to concede, he shouted back. "You are the ones in the way! I'm his relative!"

While Chiaki argued and wrangled with the police officers, Takaya was carried into the ambulance van on a stretcher. An unfamiliar couple of youngsters followed him into the ambulance as though they were escorting him.

"Kagetora!"

The ambulance siren drowned out Chiaki's yell as it hastened down the road past him.

"Over there! They were the ones who descended from the heavens, they flew down from the sky!"

What...!

Hearing the female voice behind him, Chiaki turned back in surprise. She was one of the tourists who had witnessed the entire incident. She was seated under a tree receiving a dressing for a wound, yet she was shouting out in a shrill voice due to excitement.

"We saw it, they really did come from the sky! It's true! From the sky... People who flew down from the sky!"

From the sky?

Chiaki ran towards her. "What did you say? Someone came from the sky, what happened?"

"I saw it, everyone did. They... from the castle above, they flew down from the sky!"

Chiaki followed the direction in which the woman was pointing and looked across. She was referring to the group of young people who had encircled Takaya just now. They looked like ordinary, young men and women. Their eyes met Chiaki's.

Flew down from the sky...?

Although Chiaki was skeptical, he heard similar comments from the enthusiastic chatter of the other tourists. The youngsters exchanged a few words among themselves, then proceeded in the opposite direction of the road as if to avoid the crowd. Chiaki noticed a senior high school student in a high-collar uniform mingled among them. He recognized that face - Nezu Kouichi.

"You...!"

He wanted to pursue him but was obstructed by the throng of police officers who swarmed in and blocked his way, he could not move. As Chiaki tried his best to move forward, the group of youngsters blended into the crowd, making it no longer possible to track them.

"Damn... it!"

He was ultimately helpless in the situation. Furthermore, Chiaki was now even more concerned about Takaya's injury. By the look of things, he had sustained a considerably severe injury. Chiaki gnawed on his tongue and hastily left the Katou shrine.

Another Kojou high school student who had arrived at the scene of the commotion brushed past Chiaki. He was Miike Tetsuya. Chiaki was supposed to handle the fifth lesson, however due to the bedlam in the afternoon, the students could not calm down and the class started 20 minutes late, but... Apparently, there was yet another disruption. Chiaki-sensei had unexpectedly cut his lesson short. After instructing the students to carry out their own self-study, he darted out of the classroom with an unusual look on his face.

He looked strange...

Speaking of which, he had not seen any sign of Ougi Takaya. Furthermore, there was that booming which came from an unknown, distant location. That was when Chiaki-sensei had...
Tetsuya had left his noisy classmates and walked out of the classroom by himself. His trailing of Chiaki ultimately led him to this scene at the Katou shrine.

What on earth...

What the hell happened?
Tetsuya gazed at the miserable remains of the shrine, he could not help but doubt his own eyes. This looked exactly like the aftermath of the typhoon which had wrecked the place several years ago. The trees had been flattened to the ground. There were large pit holes in the ground as if the soil and earth had been dug out. The displaced soil and earth was now piled in mountainous heaps, transforming the surface into a peculiar cluster of mounds. Since there was damage to the subterranean layer of the ground, the rock walls of the inner moat had crumbled.

Just what on earth happened here...

It was outlandish. What was the meaning of this? The incident which occurred just moments ago, the uproar in the broadcasting room, the battered remains of the asphalt road that he saw from the sports field beside the school gate, the students who had suddenly collapsed--

Something isn't right.

His body trembled for no apparent reason.

What the...

Sensing that something bizarre had happened in his surroundings, Tetsuya strangely began to feel terrified. The freakish devastation before him was like an omen, he inadvertently shrank back.

His retreating feet unexpectedly
stepped on something round.
Startled, Tetsuya lifted his leg, only to find a glittering key chain on the ground where his feet was. It had the five letters 'SEEVA' imprinted on it.

"? ...This..."

It looked familiar to him. Wasn't this key chain attached to Inaba Akemi's schoolbag? Akemi would still use such accessories despite the fact that they were banned in school. She would only take it out when the inspection team was not looking, usually hiding it between the zipper. Tetsuya picked it up and frowned.

But why was she here...?

"You're a student of Kojou High right?"

That sudden question startled Tetsuya, he lifted his head. The chief priest of the shrine was standing beside him. His uniform probably led the priest to this deduction.

"Just now, a boy appearing to be a student from your school was taken away due to serious wounds. I don't know if your school has been informed about it. He looked really hurt, he threw up a lot of blood, his internal organs might have been injured."

"Student from our school?" Tetsuya stared at him. "Don't tell me..."

A sense of loathing arose in Tetsuya's head. Takaya was the very first thing that came to his mind. Despite the lack of any clear evidence, everything seemed to indicate that Takaya was linked to this wreck.

"Could it be Ougi..."

"Eh--...?"

"Don't tell me it was Ougi!"

Of course, the other had no clue. But Tetsuya interpreted it as such, fully convinced of his judgment. Tetsuya's intuition had never failed him before.

Could it be that Ougi has something to do with this incident as well...

What on earth happened?
What on earth was going on?

***

After asking the rescue team personnel in a somewhat threatening manner about the hospital to which Takaya had been sent, Chiaki immediately bolted to the place.

A couple of unknown youngsters appeared to be waiting for Chiaki as he ran down the corridor, panting. One of them was wearing a yellow-green casual outfit, the other was a young woman dressed in a deep-blue jacket and a pair of cherry-colored pants. --Yes, they were the ones who had accompanied Takaya in the ambulance.
At the very end of the hallway, the red sign 'In Operation' was alight above the entrance of the emergency room.

"Kagetora..."

"... He's in critical condition." Noticing the visitor, the slightly older youth informed Chiaki in this way. Chiaki was startled and looked at the young man. The latter continued in a doctor-like manner.

"Right now they're carrying out an emergency surgery, however due to difficulties in breathing, his condition is extremely precarious. I hope he can pull through this..."

"...!"

Takaya's injury was far more severe than he had expected. The intensity of that battle was clear from just one look at the damage done to the surrounding area. Takaya had sustained a serious injury, so serious that it had rendered him unconscious.
Chiaki clenched his lower lip, and gazed at the other two.

"Who are you people?"

"..."

"Do you know who did this to him?"

"We only saved him."

"Saved him?"

"Yes, right before his opponent had the chance to deal the final blow. Owing to our intervention, his opponent saw that he was no match for us and fled."

"Who are you people?"

They were not hyoui rei. Neither were they kanshousha. However the aura around their body was clearly different from ordinary people. If they were capable of saving Takaya in that intense fight, the incantations they were adept in must definitely be--

It can't be.
Chiaki gasped.

Descended from the sky? Don't tell me the ones who flew down from the sky are...!

"Was it you people?"

"..."

"Are you the ones who came from the sky, the people whom the onlookers were talking about! What's going on here! So were the youngsters with Nezu your comrades!"

"You must be Ougi Takaya's friend."

Chiaki was taken aback from her sudden interruption. The one who spoke was the long-haired female standing to the side.

She knows of the name Takaya?

"If that's the case, you better leave soon. That person, who seems to be your enemy, has captured a girl from the same school as Ougi Takaya."

"Captured a schoolgirl...!" Chiaki bellowed, he savagely grabbed the lapels of the woman's clothes. "Did you see this! Who was it... Who did!"

"If he sends a demand for ransom, you should be able to identify him then. Anyway, please return quickly. Shouldn't that girl's safety be your top priority right now?"

"That's right. Even if you remain in hospital, the most you can do is wait for the operation to be over."

Chiaki stared at the youth nervously. These youngsters were fairly steadfast.

"Only the doctor can handle the rest. We shall take responsibility for his well-being. Please go back quickly."

"...Who are you people?" Chiaki lowered his voice and asked. "Who on earth are you?"

Their mannerisms and attire were no different from the average person. However the look in their eyes was overly calm, he felt that it was lacking in human warmth. Chiaki was irritated by their evasiveness, which eventually compelled him to raise his voice in a rude manner.

"I said who are you people!"

The silent young man squinted a little, then slowly, the reply came. "--We are the people of Himiko's kingdom."

"...!"

"We are the descendants of those who lived during the era of the honorable Himiko's kingdom, the ones who revere the people of the Fire Sect. Will this answer do?"

Chiaki was at a loss for words. "...What did you say..."

The moment he finished with his reply, Chiaki cast the woman aside. This time, he ruthlessly grabbed hold of the man's shirt.

"What are you getting at! What Himiko! What the hell do you mean, are you saying that you're the descendants of the Yamataikoku!"

"You asked who we were and I've answered you as according to the facts." The youth did not show any sign of vacillation. "For now, this is the only answer I can give that would be comprehensible to you. However, one thing is certain. And that is we are not his enemy."

"...Is this some kind of joke, telling me to trust you?"

"Then can we request for your trust?" The youth asked without any hesitation. "Nevertheless, you should return as soon as possible, otherwise, another life will be sacrificed. We will bear the responsibility of looking after him. So please go, quickly."

Chiaki knew that he could not acquire any further answers. Scowling, he crudely released the young man. ...If a schoolgirl had really been kidnapped, then they were right, he had to go.

Guess I've no choice...

Chiaki hurried back, down the corridor.

You better hang in there, Kagetora!

The young man and woman stood under the red light, watching Chiaki as he left.

***

"Chiaki-sensei!"

Chiaki had returned to the school. A desperate-looking Yamaguchi-sensei was waiting for him. Class had ended and Yamaguchi, together with 2B's Kurokawa-sensei, came to the teacher's lounge in the mathematics department.

"What's the matter? Yamaguchi-sensei."

"We've a problem, I just received this. Someone sent this to the school...!"

Yamaguchi was holding a white envelope. The letter was addressed to the teacher of class 2B. It was stuffed with a heavy object. Opening the package, he found a bundle of black hair and the thick student manual of Kojou high school. The student card stuck inside had the photo of a childish-looking schoolgirl.

Inaba Akemi.

She was Takaya's classmate. That hair must be hers. The curly and lustrous black hair was bound together with a paper rope into a bundle. Chiaki hastily took out the piece of paper which had been placed in the same envelope. At the top corner of the page was a succinct message written in ancient, calligraphic handwriting. Chiaki's expression grew solemn after reading it. He lifted his head immediately and asked.

"Where's Inaba? Today, did Inaba..."

"She said she had to go to the dentist and left early. She was no longer here by the fifth lesson."

"Have you contacted her family?"

"Yes," Kurokawa replied, feeling embarrassed and at a loss. "Apparently, she has yet to return home. Her family said that her appointment with the dentist should've ended thus she should've been back by now."

"..."

Chiaki gripped the bundle of hair in his hand tightly.

--Your enemy has captured a schoolgirl...

So that was really the truth?

Chiaki gritted his teeth in anger, he turned towards Yamaguchi and Kurokawa in a resolute manner.

"Where's Miike Tetsuya?"

"He left before the sixth lesson. His classmates said that he probably skipped class and returned home."

"Where does he stay? I'm going to see him. If he has returned home, contact his parents--"

"Miike stays by himself."

Chiaki looked at him in surprise. "By himself? He's just a senior high school student right?"

"Yes. His family stays at Aso, however, due to some complicated reason he lives in a rented apartment in the city by himself. ...I heard that he was raised by a relative since young."

This was the first time Chiaki heard about this. It seemed like Tetsuya had been a difficult student ever since he started school, giving the teachers a lot of grief. Kurokawa had a complex expression on his face.

"I heard his father died a premature death. Then, his mother left her children and abandoned the family. Thus he was raised by the younger brother of his paternal grandfather. Their home is situated at Yakuinbaru, Aso city. I visited them once."

"Then what about his sister?" Chiaki probed deeper into the issue. "I understand he has a younger sister called Hokage. Which school does she attend? Is she staying at the old residence?"

Kurokawa frantically flipped through the student register. "Mmm... his younger sister goes to the private girls' school in the city. I was told that Miike lived alone so his sister probably commutes from the old residence to school."

"But Chiaki-sensei, what do you think this letter means? What is Asara? Is this letter a practical joke? Or..."

"It would probably be better to notify the police about this..."

Kurokawa and Yamaguchi were both unaware of the fact that Miike Tetsuya's younger sister - Miike Hokage - had disappeared one year ago.

Furthermore, this letter... No, this was no ordinary letter. It was most definitely a letter of threat.

Who is responsible for this?

The adversary who fought with Takaya perhaps. Who was this person capable of inflicting such serious injury to Kagetora? Was it Mikuriya's subordinate? Or...

"..." Chiaki's grip tightened on the piece of paper. He stared at the letter, his lips tensed. "Kurokawa-sensei. Can you let me handle this matter?"

"Chiaki-sensei?"

"I'm going to see Miike."

The person in question was certainly an onshou if he had fought with Takaya. And that same person had sent a letter of threat to Miike Tetsuya. What was going on? Could there be some reason behind this?
The one student in this school who the mixed spirits did not dare approach,

Miike Tetsuya...

With a terrifying expression on his face, Chiaki stared ahead.

Chiaki Shuuhei was being observed from a room in the school building as he hurried out of the entrance after briefly returning to the school. It was Mikuriya Juri and the vice-president, Ozaki - namely, Yokoteno Gorou.

"That kanshousha is on the move now is he."

"Seems like something happened in Kurokawa's class 2B, he confined himself in the lounge with Yamaguchi and the rest, apparently indecisive about something." Yokoteno Gorou discussed unenthusiastically. "I have sent the men down to find out what happened."

"I see." Mikuriya Juri replied, shifting her eyes away from the window. "Did you find out anything about the disturbance just now?"

Gorou replied with a curt 'yes'.

"Apparently, Ougi Takaya and Kiyomasa were involved in a clash of Nen Nami with a certain opponent at the Katou shrine."

The battle between Takaya and Rairyuu, had no doubt been sensed by Mikuriya and the others. Mikuriya had immediately ordered Gorou to find out what had happened, however by the time he left, the individuals involved were already gone.

"It seems like Ougi Takaya has been seriously injured. Kiyomasa left the scene with some suspicious comrades."

"Comrades? He has comrades?"

"Yes. According to the eyewitnesses, those comrades apparently descended from the sky."

"From the sky?" Mikuriya was astonished, her eyes were wide open. "What is the meaning of this? Can an ordinary person fly? Impossible. Well if that was the truth, they would be akin to the angels, wouldn't they?"

"Perhaps some sort of illusory technique was used, giving the onlookers a misconception. I was told that every single one of them appeared ordinary. ...I have already sent the men after Kiyomasa. I have instructed them to contact me as soon as they catch up with him."

Mikuriya pressed her hand against the corner of her mouth, pondering deeply. "Incomprehensible..."

"...What should I do?"

"This is fine. Mobilize all of our forces for the search. I will also send word to Dousetsu-dono. Clearly, the one who fought with Kiyomasa is not from the Ootomo. If there is another military power besides the Ootomo in Kumamoto, who can it be? We must look into this." Mikuriya's cold expression returned, she continued. "The jyako will reach the end of their incubation within the next few months. Starting from the students carrying the matured larvae, put them through a training befitting of the holy warriors of the Ootomo. The excavation of the 'Golden Snake Head' cannot continue at this slow pace either. Those capable of interfering have already received the wrath of God. ...Also, that kanshousha by the name of Chiaki Shuuhei, if he gets in the way..."

Mikuriya did not finish her sentence, instead she looked at Yokoteno Gorou. Gorou saluted her respectfully.

"Gorou shall do as you wish."

***

Tetsuya's apartment was a five-minute walk from the bus stop located within the residential vicinity. It was a small wooden apartment which appeared to be over 20 years old. The apartment was originally built for the students of Kumamoto university as it was situated just next to the institution. Tetsuya was probably the only senior high school student staying there by himself as the majority of his fellow occupants were Kumamoto university students. Avoiding the few scooters parked outside in random fashion, Tetsuya saw a human figure standing outside his room as he started up the staircase. He assumed he was one of the residents. He was wrong. His face instantly stiffened.

"You...!"

"You're coming back way too late, you punk. Were you busy loitering around?"

Chiaki Shuuhei was leaning against the door to his room as he spoke. Tetsuya was shocked, so much that his heart nearly stopped as he had been thinking about Chiaki and Takaya all this while.

"W...What do you think you're doing!" Tetsuya demanded in steady, rebellious tone. "What are you doing here?"

"Crashing your place to conduct an interview." Chiaki replied, he approached with his hands in his pockets. "I've something to show you."

"Something to show me...?"

"Yeah."

Chiaki took out an envelope from his side-pocket and gave it to Tetsuya. Tetsuya was stunned when he saw its contents.

"! ...This ...This...!"

"Your classmate, Inaba Akemi, has been captured."

"Inaba has been...!" Tetsuya was startled, he looked at Chiaki. "Why! Why was Inaba taken! Who took her!"

"I've no clue, that's why I'm here to ask you. Look at that piece of paper."

Tetsuya opened the folded sheet of paper as indicated by Chiaki and examined it.

"A letter of threat. Furthermore, it's addressed to you. It says on top that if you want Inaba to be returned safely, you are to bring the 'Asara'."

"Asara..."

"It's a letter of threat addressed to you. I suppose you know what that 'Asara' is?"

Tetsuya's expression had clearly changed. His languid eyes had widened, his lips were pursed together as he stared at the letter in a frozen manner.

"'In 3 days time, on the 22nd, at midnight. Bring the 'Asara' to the designated location. If you do not comply, I cannot guarantee the life of the hostage.' That bundle of hair is really Inaba's, isn't it? I was told that her family received a similar threat via a phone call. And Inaba hasn't returned home."

"How can this be..."

Tetsuya suddenly remembered the key-chain he found at the Katou shrine. Could it be, at that place, was Akemi...

"How..."

"Miike."

"What on earth is going on! This is weird! Why was Akemi... Who was the one...!" Tetsuya glared at Chiaki. "Who are you people really! These strange incidents started after you all came to this school! No, before that... after Mikuriya came... All those things that happened in school, and the incident at the Katou shrine!"

"...!"

"Could it be that..." Tetsuya had noticed the twitch in Chiaki's face. "Don't tell me... So it's true then? Was Ougi the one who got seriously injured and sent to hospital? You and Ougi are related right! What did Ougi do!"

"...I don't know." Chiaki strove to maintain a calm expression. "If he's lucky, he might make it through."

"--You guys..."

"Nevermind that, the focus is on you, Miike."

Chiaki suddenly gave Tetsuya a sharp look, instilling fear in him. This was the first time Tetsuya saw such a serious look in Chiaki's face.

"What is this 'Asara' that the letter refers to? You know it right. You're quite the mystery. Like why are you the only one whom the mixed spirits don't dare to approach?"

"Spirits...?"

"In that school, every single student has been attached with mixed spirits, however you alone have none. And the reason seems to be more than just the fact that there's no magnet in your body. It's almost as if they keep a distance from you out of fear. Who are you exactly? Why do the onshou see you as a threat!"

"I don't know what you're talking about...!"

"You sister went missing, didn't she? Why did she go missing! Does this have something to do with the spirits' fear of approaching you!"

"I... I don't..."

"What is the 'Asara'! You know this right! What is that letter referring to!"

"I don't know! I don't know where she is!"

"What?" Chiaki's eyes widened. "Do you know what the 'Asara' is..."

"I don't know where she is! No one will tell me, so I don't know!"

Chiaki watched Tetsuya intently, the latter was holding his head as he shouted.

"Miike..."

***

The on-site investigation of the Katou shrine had come to an end for the day. Beneath the sturdy tower of Kumamoto castle, illuminated by the spotlight and standing serenely as though nothing unusual had happened, was a matchless darkness. Just that one corner of the shrine was devoid of any lighting.

Just moments ago, there was still a horde of people gathered at the site in a rowdy fashion after word of the incident began to spread. However as the sky darkened, the size of the crowd had decreased like an ebbing tide. Usage of the road in front of the Katou shrine was now prohibited, vehicles were not allowed to pass through. There was a strip of tape indicating that entry into the shrine's compounds was forbidden.

Standing before that tape were two men in overcoats.

"How terrible..." The miserable state of the scene left Takahashi Jouun aghast. "Just who was it, going this far..."

The man standing beside him, wearing a cashmere coat, was silent. --He was Kaizaki Makoto.
Kaizaki gazed at the ruins of the shrine with a solemn expression for a while, then he lifted the tape and entered the shrine.

"Kaizaki-dono...!"

Kaizaki ignored Jouun, avoiding the large craters, ensuring his foothold as he proceeded forward. Jouun hesitated for a moment, then hastily ran after Kaizaki.

Kaizaki slowly knelt beside a fallen tree.

"Kaizaki-dono?"

Kaizaki quietly removed his leather gloves and stretched his hand towards the ground. He swept the gravel with his fingertips as though attempting to sense something. Jouun did not understand his actions, but this was the spot where Takaya had vomited blood after collapsing from Rairyuu's attack. As the surroundings were too dark, Jouun did not see the combined look of pain and anger on Kaizaki's lowered face.

"The remnants of the incantation energy is truly astonishing." Jouun thought aloud as he shuddered. "A great amount of battle air remains despite the length of time that has passed... It must have been a fight between very powerful individuals."

"..."

"If the onshou was not of the Ootomo, surely it must be the Oda? And the opponent would be..."

"It was the Ikkoushuu." Kaizaki replied, still squatting on the ground. "The onshou who fought here was the Ikkoushuu's Shimozura Rairyuu."

"You..." Jouun was extremely surprised. "Shimozura Rairyuu, do you mean the Shimozura Rairyuu, known as the trump card of Kennyo? I hear that he is the strongest among the Ikkoushuu... Do you know him?"

"Mmm." Kaizaki slowly stood up. "That's right. Seems like the Ikkoushuu's kanshousha is now on the move in Kumamoto."

"Then do you know who his opponent was, Kaizaki-dono? Was it the Oda?"

"His opponent was--..." He did not finish his sentence. Dyed in Takaya's blood, Kaizaki's fingers dug into his palm so fiercely that they nearly punctured his skin. Kaizaki's fists were quivering, the arteries at his temple grew slightly more pronounced.

"Damn the Ikkoushuu, what are they planning by coming to Kumamoto all of a sudden? You must contact Lady Julia, a thorough scout must be conducted."

"...The Ikkoushuu have an alliance with Akechi Mitsuhide, I was told that Akechi and Shimazu colluded not too long ago."

"What?" Jouun lifted his head in shock. "Really?"

"It has yet to be confirmed, but if it is true, it would be better to exercise more caution. Also, we cannot be sure that they are completely unaware of Kojou high school."

"You mean the hurried efforts to unearth the 'Golden Snake Head'?"

Kaizaki nodded, he turned around. There was a murky gleam in his eyes behind those glasses.

"I was told that the suppression the Ikkoushuu is the most important mission of the Uesugi. Naoe-dono would probably set out to attack Rairyuu."

"Does the Uesugi intend to fight against Rairyuu! But that man is known as the Ikkoushuu's killing machine!"

"Yes." Kaizaki replied, he glared at the emptiness in an icy manner. "I will personally crush Rairyuu."

"You--..."

"I want him to regret this. Shimozura Rairyuu... I will make him realize just how grave a sin he has committed."

Jouun gulped, seeing that murderous look on Kaizaki's face as he spoke. That extreme stoicism almost seemed to reflect how much he was repressing his murderous intentions within himself. A hair-raising sensation ran down Jouun's back.
The flames of darkness born from anger and hatred burned.
Kaizaki clenched his fist once again.

Takaya and Nezu came to the Kato shrine situated near Kumamoto castle. They had shaken off the soldiers chasing them. Takaya sat on the bench, panting heavily; Nezu undid the collar button of his school uniform, as though finding it irksome.

"Damn it, that Ootomo has finally shown his true colors. And all of my subordinates destroyed..."

"Nezu." Takaya muttered, inhaling deeply. "No, better to address you by your real name. Katou Kiyomasa."

"..." Nezu frowned. "So you realized?"

"I didn't think you'd be a senior high school student..." Takaya remarked in a breathless manner. "If the people here know about this, they'd be taken by surprise. Who would've guessed that their beloved Seisho-kou, who constructed that magnificent castle, is a student at their local school..."

"I was not the one who built that castle. It was the work of the many laborers."

"I didn't mean that..."

When Kiyomasa finally managed to calm his breathing, he suddenly widened his eyes and glared at Takaya.

"Uesugi, I believe I gave you a warning, telling you to leave Kumamoto. Why are you still here? If you remain, I will not go easy on you. I will definitely kill you."

"Now isn't the time to be wasting our energy over this." Takaya retorted with a fierce look at Kiyomasa. "Several students have been injured. Or is it that you don't care what becomes of the students?"

Kiyomasa's protest was smothered, he fell silent. Takaya approached Kiyomasa.

"What did Mikuriya and the others do to the students? That tape was really some sort vehicle for hypnotism right?"

"...Only then did I realize it." Kiyomasa bit on his fingernails incessantly, unwilling to discuss it. "It's that music, it's played everyday during lunch break. The information I had received was vague, hence I never noticed it. The students were brainwashed by that music."

He was referring to the Gregorian hymn that the students listened to everyday. Within that music was the recording of a hypnotic verse, which was barely audible. The hypnotism had been passed through a series of spiritual adjustments to the stage where it was comparable to ultrasonic waves. It was virtually impossible to stop the music from entering the ears of the students. Even if they were not listening attentively, the hypnotism would still be able to permeate their brains.

"The tape just now was different from usual. Perhaps it was a special type of hypnotism that only a select group of people can hear. It was targeted at us, music combined with a dash of hypnotism designed to kill."

It was indeed strong.

One that carried the power to herald death. Nezu's subordinates had very likely sustained extensive injuries. It probably inflicted greater harm on the hyoui rei than the students themselves. The spiritual bodies had been ensnared by the hypnosis and self-destructed. This hypnotism had a lethal power. Could it be that...

Did those teachers die as a result of this hypnotism as well?

"That damn Mikuriya. They're planning to nurture the students of that school into soldiers for Ootomo."

"Soldiers for Ootomo?"

"Yes." Kiyomasa gazed at the main hall of the Katou shrine built in honor of him, and folded his arms across his chest firmly. "Right now, the enemy's Yachou are unable to infiltrate Kumamoto. Due to the ongoing crackdown on hyoui rei, spiritual bodies are ineffective. Nobody other than kanshousha can enter. As a result, Mikuriya must, in her present location, raise troops that are capable of operating in Kumamoto. She has brainwashed the students, turning that entire school into a training ground for Ootomo's soldiers. Going so far as to implement this in a covert manner, she's truly one foxy woman."

"Training of soldiers..."

"That's right. You saw those mixed spirits attached to the students' bodies right? They are attracted to the egg of the jyako buried in their bodies. The jyako has a magnetic effect."

Takaya's face tensed. "Jyako's... egg?"

"Mmm." Kiyomasa looked irritated. "The preternatural eggs come from the snake spirit which is known to have cursed venom. Mikuriya has implanted a jyako egg into every single student, letting the jyako parasite stay inside the students' bodies. Although the eggs are still in breeding phase, they're about to hatch."

Takaya suddenly remembered something, exclaiming 'Ah'. He was not mistaken then. The object wriggling like an earthworm inside the carotid artery of the student who had collapsed earlier...

Was that the larvae of the jyako...

"The Gregorian hymn also serves as prenatal care. Educating them to be fully devoted as soldiers for Ootomo. Furthermore, those who have the jyako parasite implanted in their bodies easily respond to Mikuriya's hypnotism. When I performed kanshou on this body, it was already implanted with an egg. I was immediately aware and burned it within the body. That woman is a snake master."

"Snake master...?"

"Yes. She has the ability to communicate with the will of the snake spirit and control them exceptionally well."

"If the eggs hatch, what will happen then?"

"A soldier for Ootomo would then be completed. Just like how the snake spirit obeys Mikuriya, the students will become Mikuriya's faithful servants."

All of the students...?

Just thinking about it made Takaya feel sick. Approximately 1200 to 1300 students, all of them to become warriors in the Yami Sengoku?

"!... In that case, don't tell me... all those students from the inspection team, capable of powers, have also..."

"That's right. Because the larvae of the jyako has hatched."

Takaya grew pale. "If that's the case, then all of the students of Kojou high school will one day be capable of powers..."

"Correct." Kiyomasa pressed his clearly defined lips together, looking askance at the Udo tower of his Kumamoto castle. "They will be soldiers with powers. Ootomo intends to use them as Kojou's castle garrison. Their target is a certain object buried in that school - beneath the ground surface on which Kojou was constructed. In order to prevent us from hindering the excavation project, they intend to use the students as a castle garrison."

"A certain object?"

"The treasure buried by the former lord of the castle, Sasa Narimasa-dono."

Takaya was startled. He did not expect to hear this name at this particular moment. Sasa Narimasa, Kojou's former lord of Kumamoto castle.

"The object buried by Narimasa, don't tell me the so-called Narimasa treasure is the 'Head of the Orochi'?"

"!... How do you know that?"

"Uh... Well---..."

Takaya hesitated. In any case, he could not let Kiyomasa know that he had 'heard of this from Kaizaki Makoto'. Takaya replied, "I found out about it." Kiyomasa looked somewhat skeptical, he continued.

"I'll be straight with you, it's real name is the 'Golden Snake Head'. I hear it's an extremely large skull of the orochi."

"Skull...?"

"Yeah. Like a monster with a body as huge as a river. It was the piece of treasure granted to the first shrine of the Higo province - Aso shrine."

Situated at Aso Miyaji, Aso shrine was the representative shrine of Higo. When Narimasa was assigned to Kumamoto by command of Taigou Hideyoshi, he strove hard to win the support of the people of Higo. He had invited Koremitsu of the Aso clan, who was the high priest of the great shrine as well as a general, Iyoshi and his brothers to a courteous reception at the sanctified Aso shrine. This was the moment where the Aso clan presented the 'Golden Snake Head' to Narimasa. Narimasa had been exulted for this reason, offered it to the 'castle's patron saint' in tribute and had placed it at one remote corner of Kojou, that is, somewhere beneath the gymnasium.

Aso shrine...

Something flashed in Takaya's mind. He remembered hearing about this shrine just recently. Kiyomasa took no notice of him and continued.

"It is said that the 'Golden Snake Head' is the skull of a large serpent that lived in the depths of Aso during the ancient times. The volcano, Mt. Aso, has been around since time immemorial. That serpent would trigger an eruption of the lava amassed beneath - some have also said that it's the manifestation of the Magma God. It's also said that the 'Golden Snake Head' was controlled by Aso shrine's Sannomiya Kusakabeyoshimi deity - namely Kuniryuu myoujin. But there's yet another theory."

Kiyomasa turned towards Takaya and said. "Legend has it that the skull is just one of the heads of the yamata-no-orochi."

Takaya stared at him. "Yamata-no-... orochi...?"

Huh?

Right at this moment, a female student cycled past the shrine. She was wearing Kojou high school's uniform.
It was Inaba Akemi.
Akemi left school early in the morning as she had to go to the dentist. However, she was on her way back to school to retrieve the worksheets she had left in the classroom. Akemi saw two familiar faces in the shrine, and could not help but stop her bicycle.

Eh, it's Nezu-kun and Ougi-kun.

Akemi thought, "What are they doing?" and got off her bike. Since she had left early, she was unaware of the commotion which had taken place in school during the lunch break. This was strange to her, it was obviously time for the fifth lesson, what were those two doing here? She wanted to greet them but both of their faces were so solemn that she found it difficult perturb the atmosphere by calling out to them.

Speaking of which...

She recalled the incident that occurred after school a few days ago. Nezu had confronted Takaya, and said some truly baffling things to him. Calling him by the name of Uesugi and such, not to mention dealing out threats to make him leave... In any case, this particular moment felt somewhat bizarre to her. Akemi inadvertently slipped into the shadows, and spied on Takaya and Nezu's actions. Despite the distance, she could hear their conversation. They were talking about Kiyomasa and Mikuriya.

What the heck are they talking about...

"Hello there, young lady." Someone unexpectedly addressed her from behind, scaring Akemi half to death.

"Wah... Yes!"

Once Akemi turned around, she was shocked. An unfamiliar middle-aged man wearing a suit was standing there. He appeared unusually good-natured. Akemi thought, "Is he a tourist?" However it did not seem that way.

"Judging by your uniform, I presume you're a student of Kojou high school?"

"Yes. ...That's right... Ngh!"

Her words were mingled with groans, resulting in a strange kind of cry. The man's fist had struck Akemi's abdomen. Akemi let out a tiny moan before collapsing.

"Take her into the car, Shichiri."

A voice relaying an order came from behind. The suited man replied with an 'Understood', and carried Akemi towards the vehicle parked by the roadside. Right at that moment.

"...!" Takaya had sensed traces of suspicious activity, and turned in their direction.

"What's the matter? Uesugi-dono."

"I heard something just now..."

"A sound? ...Hey, Uesugi-dono!"

Takaya took off in the direction from which the sound had originated. As though wanting to obstruct his path, the black figure of a person leaped out of the shadows.

"!"

The man in his way had an excellent physique and wore a deep brown overcoat. A good area of the man's face was concealed by his hat. Takaya was forced to stop.

What...!

Takaya nearly exclaimed in surprise, he gasped. The youth took off his hat, revealing his face, confronting Takaya.

"This would be our first meeting since Itsukushima, Kagetora."

"!"

Takaya held his breath when he saw that face. The structure of his features was somewhat bony, however the burn injury on the right side of his face and the stitch marks were a ghastly sight to behold. Those two eyes glinted brightly like a hungry beast. Takaya muttered his name in a hoarse voice.

"Shimozura... Rairyuu...!"

The man in front of Takaya was indeed the brother of Shimozura Rairen, Honganji's bougan, Shimozura Rairyuu - known as the strongest of the Ikkoushuu. He went missing after the Itsukushima incident leaving no information on his whereabouts. The miserable scar on the right side of his face exposed by the sun, made for a dreadful sight. Without a doubt, the scar was a remnant of the battle at Hagi city.

"Inaba!"

Hearing Kiyomasa yelling behind him, Takaya looked past Rairyuu. A suited man was about to place Akemi into a car. Akemi was unconscious.

"Damn it...!"

Intending to stop Takaya from rushing past him, sharp plasma broke out before his eyes.

"Ch...!"

Takaya was blasted back, but Kiyomasa's arm caught hold his body firmly. Kiyomasa glowered at Rairyuu and shouted.

"What are you planning to do with that girl!"

"That doesn't concern you." Rairyuu smiled arrogantly as he approached them. "It's been quite a while, Kagetora. I've been waiting for this day. We finally meet again."

Takaya restrained his momentary dizziness and grunted. "--Shimozura... Rairyuu... Why you..."

"What!" Kiyomasa was extremely shocked. "Shimozura... This name, could it be the Ikkoushuu! Are you Shimozura of the Ikkoushuu!"

In an instant, the hostility in Kiyomasa's eyes exceeded Takaya's. The Ikkoushuu could be regarded as the Oda's biggest enemy. Hence Kiyomasa's drastic change in demeanor was not surprising.

"You people... What are your motives for coming to Kumamoto!"

"Don't move! Otherwise, that girl is dead."

The two of them stared fiercely at Rairyuu. However, Akemi was already in the car. Rairyuu's throat quivered as he laughed deeply.

"Seriously, you haven't changed at all, Kagetora. Look at that fighting spirit, just like a beast. You're not human, you're a monster. Hmph, even I find you intriguing. All this while I've only been thinking of wanting to crush you. Just by looking at your face, I don't feel as though two years have already passed."

"What are you planning to do! What are you going to do with Inaba!"

"Hmph, that's none of your business. Oh wait, perhaps she can be used as a weapon against you, Kagetora."

"Rairyuu..." Takaya gritted his teeth to endure the pain, he asked in a strained manner. "How is it that you're still alive...?"

"Hmph. How can I die just yet? I haven't settled the score with you at Hagi and Itsukushima!"

Rairyuu raised the hair that covered half of his face, showing Takaya the wretched scar.

"Look, this injury! You caused this at Hagi city! Burns resulting from the flames ignited by that monstrous power of yours! I did not leave this physical body and perform kanshou so as to not forget that pain, that hatred!"

Hagi...?

Takaya's face immediately turned ashen. He could not understand what Rairyuu was talking about. A monstrous power? Flames brought about by him?

"You... What are you talking about..."

Rairyuu's temples were throbbing.

"You dare say you don't remember?"

Takaya really could not remember. He had not the slightest memory of fighting with Rairyuu. Takaya's extremely honest expression of ignorance rattled Rairyuu's nerves.

"How far do you intend to belittle people! You've caused someone such deep humiliation and yet...! A person like you truly deserves death!"

Spiritual flames kindled around Rairyuu, swelling within seconds. Witnessing the situation at hand, Shichiri Yorichika grew panicky.

"Rairyuu-dono! You must not kill him!"

"Leave me be, Shichiri! I have lived for this very moment! I won't let this pass even if it's Kennyo-sama's command! Kagetora, I want to kill you!"

"What!"

He felt as though a section of the ground had abruptly sunken in. He could not breathe. The 'Antipathy' that Rairyuu had released was oppressing Takaya. It was a smothering sensation that felt like his lungs were about to be crushed...!

"How's that! This is all your fault, Kagetora! You should regret having ever met me! If you had obediently remained in Kanto then all would've been well!"

"Nnnhh.. Ahh...!"

Now that Takaya's body had stiffened, Kiyomasa leaped into action in his stead.

"Damn you...!"

"!"

The moment Rairyuu lifted his chin, Kiyomasa's entire body was thrown nearly ten meters back. The tourists cried out. Kiyomasa's body crashed into a bench violently, generating a loud crash as it splintered into pieces.

"Scoundrel!"

"Hmph!"

Rairyuu released the incantation amassed in his fist. Takaya reflexively opened up a Goshinha. The impact shook the region as meteoric bursts of plasma crackled through the air.

"This level of defense simply won't protect you!"

Not bothering to distinguish between friend and foe, Rairyuu recklessly assailed his surroundings with incantations.

Waahhh!

Screams resounded. The roof of the shrine shattered together with the sound of an explosion. Cars were blown up, trees uprooted. People were fleeing in every direction in panic.

"Why you...!"

Once Kiyomasa managed to crawl to his feet, he immediately attacked with an incantation! However, Rairyuu effortlessly deflected it. Then he took out a bunch of pebbles from his pocket. They were stone puppets.

"Family of Amida, Goddess of Mercy! Annihilate the evil spirits!"

These stones would beckon the descent of the Goddess of Mercy. Rairyuu threw them into the air.

"Ch!"

A glare brightened continuously like a spotlight. Numerous figures of the Goddess of Mercy appeared before Takaya and Kiyomasa one after another.

"It's the Goddess of Mercy!"

"What is that! There are so many Goddess of Mercy!"

Shit...!

The Ikkoushuu were the masters of this technique. Exorcism powers were ineffective against gods. He had gotten caught in the most difficult of circumstances. The goddesses attacked Takaya together.

"Nnnhh... Ahh...!"

"Uesugi-dono!"

Kiyomasa shouted, the flames of the Katakama yari arose in his hand. As he assembled his incantation, the seven characters of 'Hail the Lotus Sutra' on the hilt emitted a radiance.

"Bloody Ikkoushuu, your magic is useless against me!"

Kiyomasa threw the Katakama yari at the group of goddesses. The spear pierced the ground and began to issue golden rays of light. It surged into a tempestuous assault, the sound of large amounts of swirling gravel followed in its wake, the figures of the goddesses gradually faded. Takaya, who was protecting his own body, widened his eyes.

This is...!

"You damn...! I won't let you get in the way!"

"Namu myouhou renge kyou!"

Kiyomasa drew a four-sided wooden sword from the pocket of his uniform. It was called a bokken, a ritual implement that followers of the Nichiren school of Buddhism used while praying. Kiyomasa held it together with his prayer beads, hitting them together to cast a strange sound.

"Disperse the enemy's ritual!"

Kiyomasa knocked the wooden sword intensely. Kang, kang, kang. The mysterious sound that swayed the air, slashed through the atmosphere, reverberating throughout the entire region.

"What!"

The goddesses disappeared. Kiyomasa's power had the upper hand. Rairyuu's anger escalated, he bared his teeth like a dog.

"Damn you! Doing this all of a sudden...!"

"! ...Look out, Kiyomasa!"

Rumbling... From beneath the ground came these sounds.

"What!"

Kiyomasa's legs were pushed upwards, he abruptly lost his foothold. He was going to fall!

"Wha...!"

The area around Kiyomasa assumed the shape of a concave, a circular pitfall. His body was going to be buried together with the earth into oblivion...!

"Kiyomasa! ...Damn it!"

Takaya launched an incantation at Rairyuu with the strength of his entire body. However, Rairyuu very easily blocked it with one hand.

"How strange! The force of your spell is so weak, what are you having doubts about!"

Rairyuu's palm began to turn red like burning, smelt iron. He concentrated his spells in his palm.

"You don't have the slightest bit of the power or keenness of the previous time! What have you been doing these two years!"

"Ch...!"

"You haven't been fighting with worthy opponents, have you! Do not disappoint me! Kagetora!"

"Damn you---!"

With a bellowing voice, Takaya forced out all of his incantations from the depths of his physical body. The two of them attacked at the same time, their powers clashed between them.

"!"

A razor-like explosion swept the ground surface. A whirlwind raged through the area in a manner that nearly tore apart the trees. Takaya shielded his own body, enduring the residual waves that charged across. An overwhelmingly astonishing energy that could practically shred the human body.

"Ah... Ahhhhh!"

"This is the end, Uesugi!"

From the storm, Rairyuu struck with an incantation. The momentary beam of light burned into Takaya's pupils.

"!"

Spells resembling chunks of iron struck against his body intensely. Even his bones felt as though they were being plummeted. The moment his back hit the ground, he could no longer see, his nervous system could no longer convey messages to his four limbs. The tips of his fingers were convulsing; his mouth was filled with the taste of blood.

"Allow me to stop your breathing."

Rairyuu's voice came from above. Takaya was limp, he could barely move. His own willpower could not be communicated to his body. A large, bony hand grabbed hold of Takaya's throat, firmly clamping down on his neck. His trachea was going to be broken. He could not breathe. In his cloudy state of consciousness, his blood-stained lips trembled senselessly. Squeezing his throat, that tough and angular sensation, that large hand... He remembered this feeling. It was very much like someone's hand.

Takaya murmured weakly in his heart.

--Na...oe...?

Just when he was about to lose consciousness,

"!"

Rairyuu sensed a murderous aura behind him, he immediately retreated backwards to quite a distance. At the same time, the soil was violently hurled about as if it was being fired upon by someone wielding a machine-gun. Rairyuu turned his head fiercely.

"What!"

Illuminated figures were descending from the overcast sky. With the sun behind their backs, they were not clearly visible. How was it that they had the shape of a human being? But this...!

"Ohhh!"

Arrow-like objects, which could not be seen by the naked eye, poured down. Despite Rairyuu's set up of a Goshinha, those objects could still penetrate it and pierced him...!

"Ch... Ahh!"

The moment his entire body was hit, a burning-like pain surged from within his torso.

"Ohhhhh!"

Rairyuu was desperately writhing in pain. His whole body felt unbearably hot, as if he had plunged into a fire. Rairyuu could not comprehend the situation and was lost in a state of confusion.

"Water... Water!"

He shouted out, dashing to the wash basin. However the arrows continued to attack Rairyuu relentlessly. Even if he hid himself in the shadows, those things were capable of penetrating any material and continued to strike at his body. He could not take it anymore...!

"Damn it!... Damn it.. Ahhh!"

Rairyuu was in so much pain that it was unendurable. He wildly released his incantations as he forced his battered and exhausted legs to run, jumping into the car that Shichiri had prepared for him. The car immediately skidded away.

"Uesugi-dono!"

Climbing out of the pitfall, Kiyomasa ran to Takaya's side. Takaya did not move, he had sustained a fairly severe injury. Kiyomasa held him up as he spat out the black clots of blood stuck in his throat.

What on earth happened...

Kiyomasa looked up at the sky in a testy manner.

"Ah!"

Kiyomasa cried out, however he could not find the words to continue. Takaya, weakly responsive, could only shift his eyes a little to look upwards. Although his vision was dim as though his eyes were covered with a black veil, Takaya saw it.

What...

Someone, descended from the sky.
It was a person. Most definitely a human being.

Is that... a person...

The people at the scene held their breath, so much that there was not even the slightest gasp of surprise. Everyone was speechless as they were too astonished.
It was heavenly, a circumstance that was unimaginable.
Beams of light shot to the back of Kumamoto castle from the cracks in the dense, black clouds. The dark clouds served as a backdrop as the people slowly descended from the sky. Were they angels?
If they had wings on their backs, everyone would probably be convinced of this fact. However, the ones who came from the sky, every single one of them appeared ordinary. Five, six... They were young men and women. Casual attire, jeans, uniforms... Their clothes were no different from the typical youngster. They were downright average and simply ordinary people.
Their normal attire brought about a sense of peculiarity, which made them appear even more divine.
Having a manner similar to those standing on the ground, they descended from the sky.
The men and women gazed at Takaya and Nezu.

In Kiyomasa's arms,
with traces of breath, Takaya muttered.

How is... that possible...

With their backs against the black clouds that heavily cloaked the sky,
the wingless angels had descended.

The car reached the entrance of the hotel. Once the valet opened the door to the back seat of the car, Tachibana Dousetsu and Takahashi Jouun got out of the vehicle.
Led by the attendant, the two of them proceeded to the high-class suite where Kaizaki had agreed to meet them. From this day onwards, all discussions to conclude the alliance were to be held in Kaizaki's room. As agents of the lord Ootomo Sourin, Dousetsu and Jouun had obtained Sourin's full authorization to come to this place.

Dousetsu had already met with Kaizaki. As far as Dousetsu and the others were concerned, they saw Kaizaki as a fugitive from the Satomi. Negotiating with offers of information on the Oda and the Takeda, he had requested Ootomo for refuge and successfully acquired consent. Kaizaki was a brilliant man. Dousetsu had an exceptionally deep level of confidence in him. Kaizaki was truly amazing to have obtained such a reputation within a short frame of time.

The one who had proposed this alliance was Kaizaki. At first, Dousetsu did not have much trust in the other party involved in the alliance. But after listening to what Kaizaki had to say, as well as some investigation on his part, Dousetsu grew partial to the notion that this was the one alliance that should be actively pursued even if one had to risk everything with this single venture. Following that, Sourin approved of the idea as well.

Led by the attendant, the two of them took the elevator up. The other party had already arrived and was waiting for them.

"Dousetsu-sama." Stepping out of the elevator, Jouun followed closely behind Dousetsu, and called him as if to verify something. Jouun looked considerably nervous. "This alliance, will it really benefit the Ootomo?"

Dousetsu was extremely calm. "What are you afraid of? Jouun."

"No, Jouun isn't afraid. But that person isn't any ordinary onshou. Not too long ago, they were still actively expelling all onshou such as ourselves to the other world without exception. Jouun is uncertain about whether they would so easily form an alliance with us."

"That's right." Dousetsu replied calmly in a melancholy voice. "That is why we can't afford to be enemies with them. Isn't that so?"

Jouun was startled, he lifted his head. He felt as though he had finally seen the light. He had only paid attention to the existing threat to the Ootomo but never considered the outlook. The threat they posed was all the more reason that they should not be enemies with them.
Dousetsu had come to this decision after considering the prospect of this alliance. Yes, his mindset resembled the time where he fought against Taigou Hideyoshi when he was still alive.

"Dousetsu-sama."

"The one who was supposedly the least enterprising, has become wildly ambitious. That's what happened. Their power is a threat to the Yami Sengoku. They have the strength that brings them closest to finding the path to domination."

Dousetsu looked ahead with a cynical but solemn expression as he walked down the corridor.

"Uesugi Kenshin."

"..."

"All that talk about him being the avatar of Bishamonten, ultimately, his true intentions have been revealed. But perhaps this was all part of a plan. Amidst his claims to be the god of war who rectifies erroneous views with the right ones, perhaps from the very start, his objective was absolute dominion. He must have been waiting for this day to come."

Dousetsu surmised. He could not help but suspect if all of these undertakings were part of a scheme. Was Kenshin, as everybody said, truly a warrior of justice? Did he have no ambitions at all? Wasn't this merely a facade designed to deceive others? In order to figure out Kenshin's true intentions, Dousetsu was constantly pondering over the matter.

Regardless, this event would certainly create a new storm of influence to the Yami Sengoku.

"The moment this matter is made known throughout the entire country, all of the onshou would probably be alarmed by it."

"The tiger of Echigo has finally joined the battle of the Yami Sengoku." Dousetsu stood before the room, reverting to his keen expression. "A new general is going to be instated."

"..."

Inside the room, besides the Satomi's Kaizaki Makoto, there was also the envoy of the other party of the alliance. Dousetsu took another deep breath as he stood in front of the door.

"An impending upheaval, Jouun."

"Dousetsu-sama."

"The power standings in the Yami Sengoku shall change as a result of this. Prepare yourself for the significance of what we are about to carry out. The importance of what you are about to see. We shall witness it firsthand, earlier than any other onshou, Jouun."

"Yes."

"The new Meikai Uesugi army. The people part of the new Meikai Uesugi army. As well as their new general. Although we still haven't seen him yet... To be able to compel Kenshin to choose him and abandon Kagetora, that man's worth..." Dousetsu turned his head and uttered. "Let us wait and see shall we."

"Dousetsu-sama."

"The man who is held in good graces by the god of war who has given himself to ambition. We of the Ootomo shall get a first taste of his strength."

Jouun nodded with an nervous expression. Tachibana Dousetsu nodded slowly in reply, gesturing to the attendant.
The doorbell rang.
As they waited for Kaizaki to answer the door, Dousetsu inhaled deeply once again. He gently adjusted his tie, straightened his back, a smile appearing on his mouth. Then Dousetsu softly mumbled.

"The new general of the Meikai Uesugi army, Naoe Nobutsuna. I wonder what sort of leader he will be. I'll be looking forward to it."
