Kaizaki Makoto was badly shaken.
Something inconceivable had happened.
Upon waking from his dreams, he found himself in an unfamiliar place yet again. He thought he was dreaming but this feeling was very real. This was not his own room. This time, he was lying on a bed in what seemed like a hospital ward, why was he in this place? He looked at the clock immediately. This had happened so often that by now he automatically knew what to do next. Makoto gazed at the date on the clock. February the 20th.

"It has been 10 days...!"

This was no joking matter. He wanted to better ascertain his surroundings and looked for his glasses, but they were not beside him. No matter, he resorted to squinting (a common habit of shortsighted people) out the window. The view was exactly as he expected - a completely unfamiliar landscape.

'He' appeared again...

Kaizaki Makoto felt a burst of loathing.

Did the 'other' me appear again?

Dread and vexation both invaded his thoughts, so much that Kaizaki Makoto felt its weight on his shoulders. As usual, he had no memories whatsoever of this brief period of time. He should be at his own residence at Kayasaki. ...How many times has this happened already?

I must've done something baffling again.

Perhaps something so serious that he had to be sent to hospital.

"Ahhh..."

Makoto sighed hopelessly. There was no doubt of his abnormality now, this confirmed it.

Give me a break...

Makoto had this sudden urge to pray.
For the past few months, it seemed as though there was another Kaizaki Makoto nested within Makoto. Was this schizophrenia? While he was unconscious, he still moved as though there was another person in control. Without warning, he would often lose several days to several weeks worth of memories. However, all of his acquaintances would assert that he behaved normally during that stretch of time whenever he asked. He had heard of this phenomena before but he never expected to end up like this. For this reason, his interpersonal relationships at his company were in complete disorder. As he had recently gone through a slew of business problems, Makoto wondered if he was suffering from psychasthenia and would be better off seeking medical help, but...

Where is this place anyway...

He should first call for the doctor and inquire about the reasons for his hospitalization. The moment Makoto decided on this, the door opened and a tall woman entered. She looked like the extroverted type, a vivacious beauty, but Makoto did not recognize her. The woman gave Makoto a frightening look for reasons unknown to him.

"So you're finally awake. Kaizaki Makoto."

Suddenly, Makoto felt uneasy. ...Had he done something terrible to this woman?
Kadowaki Ayako's entire body was burning with murderous intention.

It was to be expected.
After Shimazu Iehisa's attack, Ayako had left the unconscious Kaizaki in the care of the doctor and pursued Iehisa's company but ultimately lost them in the chase. She knew that the military forces of Satsuma's Shimazu were currently engaged in an invasion at the periphery of Higo. Yashiro was under attack. Although it was guerrilla-style warfare, she never expected them to go so far as to enter the city of Kumamoto. This was truly unexpected. The Shimazu's military invasion involved the activation of the onryou from every single ancient battlefield within the perimeter and the casualties were slowly rising. The 'Ken En' dispatched by Kagetora had been accompanied by a large Uesugi army unit yet no decisive headways had been made, neither could they calm them.

If the Shimazu have entered Kumamoto, this city would become the stage for a tripartite confrontation between the Ootomo, the Oda and the Shimazu. The nervousness of the onryou at the periphery was intensifying with each passing day. The kekkai had disappeared thus the district would probably turn into an onryou battlefield if the Shimazu military decide to massacre their way into the city.
Ayako had not factored the Shimazu into the overall picture hence her current anxiety.

But one good did come from this situation. The two people who had accompanied Takaya to the hospital were indeed the missing followers of the Fire sect. Ayako had verified this by questioning the doctor and nurses with the help of a photograph.
The woman was Saeki Ryouko.
The man was Enoki Masamichi. --The young follower who the Sect Guardian Ikeda loved dearly.

Saeki Ryouko used to stay at Kurume. She had been seen flying away from the flames.
By the look of things, there was a 80% possibility that they were the ones responsible for taking away (the remains of) Kagetora. However the driver was a conundrum. He was certain that he had transported Takaya by car but could not remember the destination. When he had regained his senses, he had found himself driving an empty vehicle down the National Highway 57, near Tateno, towards Kumamoto city. Furthermore, not a single member of staff had personally seen them transporting his body out. The trail of clues ended here.

The National Highway 57.

Before that was Aso.

Even if it was really Aso, there're no more clues.

She had called Kagetora unceasingly as instructed by Kaizaki but there was no response to indicate that the message had reached him, there was no reply from Kagetora. Trapped in an impossible situation, Ayako had returned, wondering if this man knew of any other information. But why would the followers of the Fire sect help Takaya? And why would they have to lie about being his family and take away his body (even though Ayako did not believe he was dead)?

"Who are those followers of the Fire sect?" Ayako interrogated Kaizaki Makoto with a dreadful look in her eyes. "If they are involved in the Yami Sengoku, which faction are they from? You said that Kagetora fought with Shimozura Rairyuu right? Then are the members of the Fire Sect who saved Kagetora your comrades? Or..."

"I'm really sorry... about that..." Seated on the bed, Makoto replied in a serious manner. "I don't understand what you're talking about. Seems like a lot of troublesome things occurred, but I... uh, don't even know who you...."

Ayako's eyebrow jolted, slanting upwards. "What did you say..."

"I'm really sorry. I know I've given you a lot of trouble. But I don't even know where this place is..."

"Can't you tell with one look! This is a hospital. You were knocked out by Shimazu's attack, weren't you? Beaten down until you lost consciousness, weren't you!"

"Shimazu? Did I fight with that guy?"

"?"

Ayako's eyes widened. His responses were strange. Makoto tried his best to remember but gave up after a while and sighed helplessly.

"Did I fight with someone when I wasn't around this time? ...Unbelievable."

"What are you saying!"

"I'm truly sorry, could you please tell me where this place is? Ah, I know this is a hospital. Please tell me the city and the prefecture... um, this might even be a town. Anyway, please tell me the name of this place."

Ayako stared at him, wide-eyed. She thought Kaizaki was playing the fool and almost wanted to reprimand him with a 'Why you...' but Kaizaki's expression was truly earnest.

"You, what on earth..."

"It's only natural that you should be angry but I'm really not joking. You... I don't know your name but you probably have some issue with the other me right."

"The... o-other you?"

"Mmm." Makato pressed both hands against his head. "I don't know if you will believe this but it's as if I'm ill. How should I put this, it seems as though I'm schizophrenic or something. When I'm asleep, some other consciousness would have control of my body, like another person has taken over."

"This... Do you think anyone will believe this!"

"How bothersome... What should I do..." Makoto frowned and thought for a while. "In that case, as evidence that this is true, could you call my personal doctor? He's very aware of my symptoms. Once you listen to his explanation, you should be able to believe me. He'll definitely tell you of my illness."

Makoto suggested. He took the writing pad beside the bed and wrote a few words on it.

"Eh?" Ayako was bewildered. His way of writing was somewhat different from the Kaizaki of yesterday.

He's left-handed...?

Yesterday, she was certain Kaizaki had used his right hand. Furthermore, the style of his handwriting was different. The characters he wrote were inclined towards the upper left and somewhat skewed, suggesting that he was nervous.

"Please call this doctor."

Ayako hastily compared the slip of paper he gave her with the memo Kaizaki had given her yesterday. They were completely different. Not just the handwriting, even the numbers were written differently. Kaizaki now wrote the numbers in a very fluid fashion. The handwriting on the two slips of paper clearly belonged to two distinctly different people.

What's going on...?

"Eh? Not again."

Makoto abruptly looked at his watch and murmured. His watch was on his left hand.

"This is really unbearable," he muttered, "I'm left-handed so I will usually wear my watch on the right, opposite to the usual. Seems like the other me is right-handed."

Makoto appeared frail and remarked, "Wearing it on the left makes me feel uneasy." He took off the watch. Come to think of it, his speaking manner was different as well. The Kaizaki Ayako knew spoke with more depth. He now spoke at a quicker pace, his manner was a little bureaucratic and there was no lingering timbre at the end of his sentences. But it was not forced as one would expect if he was indeed putting on a show.

"What's going on..." Ayako was puzzled. "Are you really schizophrenic?"

"Yes." Kaizaki nodded his head sullenly. "Could you please tell me where I am now? I would like to contact my personal doctor or my colleagues."

"We're at Kumamoto."

"Kumamoto?!" Makoto's voice leaped to a higher pitch. "Kumamoto... That Kumamoto?! The one on Kyushu island! How did... How did I come this far? What on earth is happening? Why have things turned out this way?"

"Do you really not remember anything?" Ayako became truly worried, she gazed at Kaizaki's face. "Not even about the Yami Sengoku?"

"Yami... Sengoku? What's that?"

Ayako sank into partial bewilderment as she looked at Kaizaki.

"Then you don't know me either? Not even Ougi Takaya?"

"Ougi... Takaya...?"

Kaizaki placed his hand beneath his mouth. He repeated the name in a low murmur.

"This name..."

"Do you know Kagetora!"

"Ougi Takaya..."

It seemed like Makoto was attempting to verify knowledge of this name. He reiterated the name, carefully.

"Ougi... Takaya... I don't know who he is..., but somehow... I feel like I've repeatedly called out this name before..."

"What do you mean? Why?"

As he repeated the name, Makoto eventually hesitated. All of a sudden, he appeared uneasy and asked in a pleading manner,

"Who is that? Do you know who he is? Could that be the name of the 'other me'?"

"N-no, that's not it..."

"I've always felt like my chest..."

A cramped feeling, as though something was knotted up tightly. Were these the lingering feelings of his 'other self'?

"Ougi... Takaya..."

He repeated the name deeply, struggling to figure out the significance of this name. Ayako watched his face as she waited for an answer, but Kaizaki could not grasp onto anything substantial.

"I wonder what sort of relationship I have with this Ougi Takaya?"

"..."

Ayako felt a burst of horror within her.

This man is really weird.

No, he had been abnormal from the start, considering his actions when they first met him on the rocky terrain of Enoshima. Yes, there was something weird about this man to begin with. Ayako had felt that something was amiss with this man, especially with his connection to Takaya.
Kaizaki was also the one who had imprisoned Takaya and the latter's demeanor was notably strange after that incident. At that time, when Ayako teased Takaya about the mark on his neck bearing a resemblance to a hickey, Takaya had glared at her with unquestionable fury. The assistance he had provided in Takaya's rescue had incited suspicion. From then on, it became a taboo to mention Kaizaki's name in front of Takaya. Whenever he became the subject of a discussion, Takaya would overreact. Then, he would always have a pained expression that vanished into the depths of his being.

Why...

And then there was yesterday. He was obviously allied with the Ootomo, why did he speak as if he was helping Takaya...

"Who are you exactly..."

Ayako looked guarded. Kaizaki honestly did not understand a single thing. Knowing that he was truly ignorant made his character all the more puzzling. Ayako reflected on the way Kaizaki had called Takaya's name; she knew of one other person who always addressed him in this way. Furthermore, Takaya had cried back then when Kaizaki covered him with his overcoat.

Don't tell me...

Was it all a coincidence? No, it couldn't be, something was not right. But if so, everything would make sense.

I'm probably just over-analyzing this.

Because they had run a thorough search and found no information on him. He was so weak during that time. This was not possible unless a miracle had happened. Furthermore, Kaizaki's schizophrenia was not a result of any sort of possession. There was only one soul in this body. And if this soul was indeed him, she should be able to identify it immediately.

Just a resemblance perhaps?

She was surprised that the Satomi would exploit an individual who was a schizophrenic, wasn't it extremely unusual?
Ayako recalled a particular anomaly in Yagami's report of the Enoshima event.
The suspicious disappearance of Satomi Yoshitaka. The remnants of the air around the area where Yoshitaka collapsed had all the typical features of the aftermath of an exorcism. Meaning that, back then...

Kaizaki was not at Enoshima...!

"Could it be..."

Ayako groaned. Kaizaki suddenly lifted his head.

"Could it be what?"

"Kaizaki. If you're schizophrenic, then do the switch here. Call your other self out!"

"That's impossible for me... I can't switch myself."

"Call the other one out! If you're really schizophrenic, call your other self out now!"

Ayako suddenly grabbed his shirt, Makoto jumped in fright.

"Please don't be harsh on me! I can't!"

"I want to be sure! Kaizaki Makoto! Who on earth are you...!"

"Don't be... harsh...!"

"You! Don't tell me you're...!"

Kaizaki's body jolted. Ayako was taken by surprise when Kaizaki's fist suddenly struck her abdomen.

"Nngh..."

Ayako groaned, crumpling onto the bed. The expression on Kaizaki's face was now that of a different person. The other Kaizaki had emerged.

"Sorry..." Kaizaki apologized to Ayako in a deep voice. "You stay at Kumamoto. The Honmyouji kekkai that Kiyomasa installed is about to crumble."

"Kai...zaki..."

"Apparently, Iehisa has made his move. The Shimazu's troops will be arriving soon. If the kekkai is destroyed, I do not know what will become of Kumamoto. The city streets will turn into an onryou battlefield."

"You... why... are..."

Kaizaki's eyes grew gentle, he bent towards Ayako, then placed his large hand softly on her head. Kaizaki said calmly.

"I know where he is. He did not die. I will bring him back."

With this, Kaizaki nimbly stood up. He put on the overcoat hanging on the clothes rack, wore the watch on his left hand again and hurried out of the room. Ayako painfully shut her eyes. A small teardrop seeped out.

..Na...oe...?

His footsteps disappeared down the corridor.

***

Kaizaki flagged down a taxi on the main road and hastily told the driver of his destination.

"Please take me to Tateno station as quickly as possible."

Too careless...

The synchronization was difficult to manage while he was inside the kekkai. Kaizaki sighed, not resigned to his predicament. He was actually knocked unconscious by Shimazu Iehisa...

Haruie is vaguely aware now.

But no matter. Now that Takaya could not act, it was likely that the old Uesugi would not function as smoothly. He was the only one who could give them instructions. Nevertheless, there would eventually come a day where he would have to tell them everything.

...What sort of answer would you give me then? Haruie.

The synchronization was briefly broken as Kaizaki had been concentrating his spirit on sending a wave of thought to Takaya. Takaya had responded to his call thus a gohou douji was sent to locate him. But a kekkai restricted its movements and it could not get close.

Damn it...!

Kaizaki gnashed his teeth in anger. No matter what sort of power he obtained, however he flaunted whatever principles he had, wanting to stand on an equal position as him, wasn't he still incapable of protecting Takaya as usual? What was the worth of these powerless hands? If he could not rescue him in this real world, didn't that point to his uselessness? Even if he was crushed, even if they hated each other, during that time when he could protect him by using his own body as a shield, didn't it make him feel infinitely happy?

N-no, it's not that...!

He was not wrong and at the same time he wanted to save Takaya. Kaizaki said to himself. He reminded himself over and over again. He should be able to do it. No, he must do it.

If not, I don't deserve to be reborn.

Once he closed his eyes, he could see Takaya crying out in grief. Kaizaki anxiously bit the joint of his finger pressed against his mouth to endure this repulsive premonition.

Not now, Takaya-san...

If I carry out a spiritual trace under these unstable conditions, you will really collapse. Even though his words could not be communicated, Takaya's unease and uncertainty were transmitted back continuously. Takaya was now in intense turmoil, so intense that it could be relayed back over so far a distance.

I cannot conduct a spiritual trace now.

--I want to rise with my own power.

But Takaya did not understand that this dangerous intent would be accompanied by ruin.

I cannot let you fight alone.

He did not even know what he could do for Takaya but his mind was set on heading to Takaya's side. Kaizaki had come to this decision as though spurred by a newfound motivation.

There's no need for anymore excuses.

No contrived excuse could grant him as much strength as the thought of personally going to his side. Even if he could not be of any use in the battle he [Takaya] chose to fight, at the very least he wanted to be with him and hold his hand firmly. Even if he had to bear the pain by himself, he should still be able to embrace his [Takaya] body closely forever.

What can I do in order to become your strength?

He could not be a mere spectator watching from a distance. Even if this suffering was a consequence of his own actions, he could not blame Takaya.

I was rescued by you.

And this strong will to live again,

Is also something that you granted me with.

Kaizaki whispered in his heart, clenching his fist lightly. In his heart, he remembered the warmth of his skin that lingered in his hands.

--Naoe...

In that short night, he had been redeemed immeasurably. That night, Kagetora had saved him from the many 'wrongdoings' that he had inflicted upon others in the past. Until now, he had never realized how much his own yearning made him [Takaya] feel uneasy and terrified.
What can I do to remove your distress? But was he truly capable of asserting 'there is nothing for you to be afraid of'?

From the bottom of my heart... I want you.

Be it your 'weakness' of never turning back due to fear of loss, or your 'cunning' desire for perpetual worship, I want all of it. He would pray as he held Takaya tightly in his embrace, yearning to claim even the vile, incurable aspect of this individual as his own with a blazing force.

Sever it, surely it can be turned into something else.

Kenshin had given him another opportunity to come back to life. Thus he had to act as accordingly to fulfill Kenshin's orders.

But...
The strength to live once again was given by Kagetora.
The one who gave him the power to stand again when he had stumbled en route was none other than Kagetora.

You told me that the ideal way of existence was not for me alone but for the both of us.
He did not not believe in anything, he did not expect anything... but constantly reminded himself of Kagetora's words.
Those words had given this heart, on the verge of demise, one last iota of strength...

--Someone like you, can't be trusted...

He wanted to remove Kagetora's pain, literally strip away the numerous layers of defenses around his heart. But however close he got to the inner depths of his being, the very core of Kagetora always thought in this way, and thus rejected Naoe. This was the very affliction which he should have alleviated and yet, because of his 'incorrigible ego' (his hatred of someone superior to him, his petty inferiority complex due to his defeat, his delusions of being harmed because he felt threatened), he could not close the divide between them.
Despite violently rejecting himself, he was always the person crying out the most intensely, 'hoping for rescue', when Kagetora was there.

I... know this very well.

Kaizaki closed his eyes painfully, clenching his fist on his knee.

I can definitely change.

If the abandonment this 'incorrigible ego' meant the 'death of the self', then he would not consider this as an abandonment. I want to change it to become someone with the strength to save you.

Change this ego into the power to save you.

He had chosen this sort of love.
This love was definitely possible.
Because in order to achieve it, he had come back to life.

I won't let you fight alone.

Please, let it not be too late. Kaizaki prayed as he gazed out the window.

The trees along Sugiki disappeared. The national highway leading towards the outer volcanic rim of Aso stretched endlessly. The vehicle continued along the straight route. To the right was a deep ravine. He had once traveled down this road, a long time ago.

They had hid in these very mountains of Aso in order to evade the Oda and protect Minako.
Before that final battle, Naoe had left the frontline under Kagetora's orders to escort Minako in an escape to a place out of the enemy's reach. Kagetora himself knew that Minako's presence would place him in a lethal disadvantage in battle. He had said 'I cannot involve her' and ordered Naoe to protect her.
Nagahide had violently protested against the reduction the Yashashuu's manpower by one but Kagetora had stubbornly refused to heed his words. Because of this, Nagahide wanted to murder Minako, regardless of the consequences, but was discovered by Kagetora and stopped. This particular dispute between them could be the reason for the subsequent lack of news on Nagahide's whereabouts for a long time.
Nagahide was not the only one whose relationship with Kagetora had soured.
Kagetora and Naoe had been cold towards each other for some time.

--I shall leave Minako in your care.

That day, Kagetora had summoned Naoe and told him so.

--I can trust you.

Kagetora had given these orders with those same eyes that always expressed a 'lack of trust' in him. Since then, Naoe had always been guessing at Kagetora's real intentions. Did those words carry a literal meaning, or had he taken their military efficiency into account before reaching this decision, or was it something completely of malice? Was there no other implied meaning? It felt like a trap. Perhaps it was really a trap. On the soil of Aso, he had taken Kagetora's beloved woman and... done something cruel. Naoe had yet to atone for this sin.

It was snowing on Aso. The forest bordering the volcanic crater was coated in a layer of snow, but the roads did not seem adversely affected by the weather.

"Things don't look too good this evening."

The taxi driver remarked after listening to the weather forecast.

"If it starts snowing in the city, transport is going to be a hassle. If there's a pileup of snow, there'll be a massive traffic jam down here. At least, not everyone is on the road..."

Kaizaki looked out the window at the thick ash clouds.

Snow...

It was snowing as well, on that day.

The car turned right off the national highway into a narrow slope that led down to the bottom of a valley. Tateno, the entrance through the Aso volcanic rim, was also utilized by the northern Aso JR Houhihon line and the diverging line of the south-south Aso railway track. The taxi stopped at Tateno station. Parked in front of the station was a 4WD, which appeared to be waiting for Kaizaki.

"Kaizaki-sama...!"

A man wearing a short coat got out and waved in his direction. It was Hakkai. As the cold snowflakes swirled down, Kaizaki got out of the taxi.

***

The rays of light pierced through the cracks in the clouds. With nary a hint of turbulence, the steady sea flickered with a silver radiance. It resembled a lake. On the other side of the Ariake sea, shaped like a big river, were the immense shapes of the mountains.

"It is a little misty today."

Irobe Katsunaga said to the young lady as he walked out of the ferryboat to the quay wall.

"That is the Shimabara Peninsula. The small mountain in front is Mayuyama, the higher mountain in the background is the Unzen Fugendake. I was told that Shimabara city was established in front of it."

It was a 30-minute drive from Kumamoto city. Irobe had come to the new harbor of Kumamoto. At the pier, the ferry leaving for Shimabara was about to embark. It took an hour to reach the Shimabara harbor on the opposite bank by ferry. The distance was about 20 kilometers hence it was much closer than Aso.
The ferry station was only completed recently. The triangular roof of the waiting quarters was rather appealing. Although there was still some time left before embarkation, a group of passengers hurried towards the pier. Irobe watched them, then gazed at the sea once again.
In the distant, a swirl of smoke rose from the peak of Fugendake. The thickening mist mingled with the ash drizzle in the dusk, making it difficult to distinguish the rising smoke from the clouds.

"It seems like the activity of Fugendake has calmed somewhat, but apparently we shouldn't let our guard down. Can you see that region, the area where the surface of the mountain appears dark brown? I heard it used to be covered in greenery, but now all of it has been burnt by the lava."

"..."

The results of disaster damage were obvious from this stretch of land that cut into the sea. It was said that the amount of smoke emitted had decreased substantially since the days when Fugendake's volcanic activity was at its highest. Depending on the direction of the wind, occasionally the city of Kumamoto would experience a rain of volcanic ash.
Irobe turned towards the young lady. She was a senior high school student of small stature, dressed in a sailor-style uniform.
Mikuriya Juri.
Mikuriya's arms were wrapped around her chest as she observed Fugendake, then she said.

"The land of Shimabara will contribute to our Catholic cause. Irobe-dono."

She pointed at the left side of the island.

"That is the group of islands known as Amakusa. After the arrival of the missionary 'Friar Almeyda', Amakusa could well be deemed as the representative city of Japan's Catholics. Almeyda-sama and our lord Ootomo Sourin had a deep relationship, moreover, he visited Usuki several times. At that time, a school was founded. It was truly a Catholic city not just in name but in reality. ...Until the official ban of this religion."

Mikuriya Juri explained, the smile disappeared from her lips. The mad storm that suppressed the Catholics had spread to Shimabara and Amakusa. Followers had been dismembered in punishment as an example to others, questioned via torture... The cruelty of it all was truly unspeakable. They had been hung, or burnt at stake, or drowned. Apparently, a few had been locked inside a jailhouse, and there had been children who died with their stomachs full of maggots that ate their way out. The martyrs had met their ends with the firm belief that death was the only way they could reach the kingdom of heaven.
Due to the relentless crackdown and cruel methods, thousands had abandoned their faith during that period.

"A human being would not have committed those acts." Mikuriya uttered in a serious tone. "The people who did that were demons."

"..."

Whatever suffering she had endured was unknown. There was a vacant look in Mikuriya's face as she pursed her lips together, the expression of an old woman with hidden bitterness. It differed greatly from her usual look, surprising Irobe
Of course, Irobe knew of that era. He had personally witnessed the many deaths of the Catholics by limb dismemberment. As the rumors spread by word of mouth, an overwhelming majority had found it brutal and inhumane.

"Lady Julia..."

Called in this way, Mikuriya suddenly came back to her senses. She closed her eyes and sighed deeply. Then she took out a cluster of ancient coins from her pocket and showed them to Irobe. The coins were connected together by a strand of thread that ran through their centers.

"This is?"

"Something known as a 'money buddha'. You use it like this."

She said, holding up the six coins by the thread in front of Irobe for a demonstration. The six coins were pulled together into a cross shape.

"A rosary..."

"Members of the underground Catholic society have this. Usually, it will look like a bunch of ordinary coins, only during prayer does one straighten it."

The Catholics who escaped the suppression had hid underground and managed to preserve their faith in this way. The mark of the cross could be found carved onto the knifes they had wielded to protect themselves, on other small items, walls and pillars, all used secretly in their worship. The Virgin Mary was also among the carved images. By braving those difficult times with various methods, the Catholics successfully maintained their faith in secret.

Amakusa harbored many of the underground hideouts of the Catholics as well. From the time of the ban until the advent of the Meiji era, these hideouts continued to serve their purpose through the subsequent generations. It was said that in the absence of a Catholic priest at one point, a mentor known as Mizukata had performed the baptisms and carried out the ceremonies by himself. However, with the passing of time, the words of prayer had degenerated into an incomprehensible chant and the Catholic church turned into an aberrant but customary religion which was completely different from the original system.

"..."

Lost in thought, Mikuriya quietly clasped the six-piece 'money buddha' in her palms. An announcement signaling that the ferry was about to embark was broadcast around the harbor. A whistle sounded. Apparently, the entire crew was already onboard the vessel. As they waited for the sound of the whistle to fade away, listening to the the waves beating up the shore, Mikuriya said to Irobe.

"I believe you may be aware that I am the second wife of Sourin-sama. I used to be the chief maid of his legal wife, Lady Elizabeth. Sourin-sama divorced her because Lady Elizabeth very stubbornly refused to convert to Catholicism."

"I heard she was born to Nadahachiman's Nada family of Shinto priests."

"Yes. The lady was associated with the Shinto priests devoted to the God of War Hachiman, thus becoming a Catholic would have been impossible."

The name Elizabeth was bestowed upon her by the Christian organization after her death. She was regarded as an evil wife.

"But I can understand her. The lady was the wife of a general during the Sengoku Jidai. She could not possibly betray her own faith in the God of War Hachiman."

Thus I was looked upon as the woman who snatched away another's husband, and for this reason suffered hatred...

Mikuriya Juri sighed deeply as she watched the peppery smoke rising from Fugendake across the sea. The ferry slowly glided past them.

"Where is the general Naoe-dono at the moment?"

"He is at Nikkou. I, Irobe Katsunaga, shall be handling the entirety of this assignment."

"I see. I did not expect him to require the head of Ryuuzouji Takanobu as a gift for our alliance. Truly startling. What brilliant leadership. Thanks to you, the Ootomo could easily enter Saga."

"In this way, Higo will be isolated from the other forces of the Oda. If Kiyomasa disappears, Higo should fall smoothly into our hands."

"Yes, if all goes according to plan. Please look over there."

Mikuriya said, pointing towards the Ariake sea.
Irobe gazed in that direction. Amongst the great waves in the distance, in the direction which the ferry had proceeded along, an object resembling a ball of fire could be seen. Irobe concentrated on it intently.

"Shiranui? In such broad daylight, do shiranui even appear in places other than Yatsushirokai?"

"That is not your usual shiranui. Please look carefully. That is the Shimazu's ship."

"The Shimazu's ship?"

Irobe was startled, he looked at Mikuriya. Mikuriya nodded.

"The Shimazu army which seized Yashiro has arrived intending to attack Kumamoto from both sides by exploiting the two-way water and land transport system. Do you see the flag with a cross in the center of a circle? Looks like a scout ship."

He could tell that she had long been aware of this situation. Mikuriya was extremely solemn, staring at the sea disapprovingly. Irobe finally realized it.

I see...

He now understood the reason why Mikuriya had specifically invited him to this place. As the commanding officer of Kumamoto, she was fulfilling her duty by informing the Uesugi envoy, Irobe, of the movements of the Shimazu's navy. She could be considered as an excellent general. He had been told that during a war, her face would have the very calm expression of a military counselor. Irobe grew earnest.

"How does the Ootomo intend to respond?"

"The Ootomo's navy have yet to arrive. They are currently engaged in battle against Chousokabe, who came to the Sea of Genkai, and cannot leave. ...Although all of the land routes up to Saga are under our control, we still hope for naval support to cover the sea routes."

Mikuriya explained, looked directly at Irobe.

"We would like to request naval reinforcements from the Uesugi."

"A navy..."

"Yes. It does not matter if this requires some time. Can you relay my request?"

"...I will do my best. But judging from the situation, it will only be a matter of time before the Shimazu navy enters the Ariake sea."

"We will restrict the Shimazu's movements to the outer perimeter." Mikuriya said confidently. "We shall make use of the Amakusa Gokyo to cut off the channel, preventing them from entering Shimabara bay."

The Amakusa Gokyo was a great bridge linking Kyushu island with the Amakusa archipelago. It was known as the 'Pearl Line', allowing one to cross over to Amakusa by land. It was a great bridge of symbolic significance to Amakusa.

"Then we will utilize the Amakusa Seto great bridge for Hondo Seto. And finally, at Shimabara, the Hayasaki Seto in Amakusa will be blocked with a wall. With this, the Shimazu's ship would not be able to enter Shimabara bay."

"Wall? But who is going to set that up? As I understand, the Ootomo's army have yet to enter Amakusa."

"I have my fellow comrades here."

For a brief moment, Irobe could not understand Mikuriya's words, but as he came to a sudden realization, his eyes widened in surprise.

"Could it be... Mobilizing the onryou who died in Amakusa during the Shimabara rebellion...!"

"I want to resurrect all of the onryou of Hara castle."

Mikuriya gazed at the Shimabara peninsula on the other side of the sea with an idealistic expression. She continued.

"Do you know what can intensely solidify the spirit between men and release power? Irobe-dono. It is faith. During the Sengoku Jidai, the fetters of parent and child, or master and vassal, all amounted to nothing. Only faith can effectively unite people. Those who met their unfortunate ends during that rebellion are my fellow comrades. This yoke is much stronger than the taking of hostages or the formation of alliances for mutual benefit."

"...Lady Julia..."

Mikuriya gripped the rosary tightly with her small hands.

"Amakusa's Shimabara rebellion was an uprising sparked by sufferings of the Catholic peasants due to their suppression and persecution. Led by Amakusa Shirou-sama, many stood up to fight as a significant percentage of the population of the fiefdom were staunch Catholics. After three months of battle to defend the city, everyone died. Of course, their only hope for salvation was by entering the Kingdom of Heaven. But their spirits still remain on that land. Is it because of their extreme remorse, their extreme pain? They cannot go to the Kingdom of Heaven."

"..."

"The spirits of these martyrs are all over Kyushu island. They believe that they cannot enter the Kingdom of Heaven even in death due to inadequacies in the strength of their conviction. They are desperately calling out the Lord's name from beneath the earth but cannot go to Heaven."

Mikuriya looked directly at Irobe.

"I want to set up a kingdom for them at Aso. Then call their Catholic souls to Aso. The 'Golden Snake Head' can summon their souls. As long as we have it, we can even call forth earth-bound spirits. I want to beckon the dead stranded in hopelessness on the land, encourage them and give them a place to pray again. Together we can repent, pray, devote ourselves to religion, and this time they can definitely enter Heaven."

Irobe quietly looked at Mikuriya Juri clutching onto the rosary, as she spoke in a passionate tone. Irobe finally understood the purpose of her Catholic kingdom. A place which could serve as a stepping stone for the grieving and indignant dead to the Kingdom of Heaven - was this the utopia Mikuriya spoke of? The kingdom of Aso. The establishment of a kekkai on the slopes of the Aso crater to turn it into a kingdom.

"...I see."

From Mikuriya's words, it seemed like the sole objective of her undertaking was to grant the souls of her comrades with a chance at purification.

No...

Irobe looked at the 'money buddha' in Mikuriya's hands and felt that there was more to this than what was presented on the surface. She appeared to have some deep-seated attachment. Why did she carry a 'money buddha'?

"Lady Julia's former name was indeed Lady Odai, wasn't it?"

"Yes." Mikuriya looked over. "Julia is my baptismal name. Is it of any concern?"

Irobe gently shook his head.

"No... This is merely a coincidence but do you know of a lady very similar to yourself, named Odai, who was christened as Julia?"

"What? I did not know that. Who would that be?"

"The adopted daughter of Konishi Yukinaga-kou. When Yukinaga-kou sent his troops to Korea, she was an orphan who was brought back to become his daughter, and received a Catholic baptism. After that, Lady Odai went to Ieyasu-kou."

"Oh?" Mikuriya's eyes widened. "Ieyasu-kou's..."

"Mmm. But I heard that after the ban of the religion, she did not relinquish her faith and was thus banished to Kouzushima. Even now, there is a festival at Kouzushima still celebrated in her memory."

"..."

A shadow suddenly clouded Mikuriya's eyes. Then she slowly lowered her head.

"I see. That lady did not relinquish her faith."

"Is there anything wrong?"

"No, just that the names are similar... it is somewhat..."

Mikuriya uttered, gripping the 'money buddha' tightly. From her reaction, Irobe saw through everything.

I see. She...

"The eggs of the jyako buried in the students of Kojou High will hatch in the next two days."

Mikuriya's face had returned to her usual expression as the student council president.

"I have implemented the hypnosis. It shall start with the sequential gathering of the fighters hosting the breeding jyako at the institution. The training to be conducted by the 'Iron Student Council' is perfect and without blemish. The troops needed for the complete control of this outstanding city will be completed soon."

The aforementioned students had already started to gather at the school yesterday night. The assembly consisted of over two hundred students in uniform.
Among them was Koganezawa Kyouko.
The group of students were under such perfect control that even Mikuriya, who had given a speech, felt pleased. The uniform of Kojou High thus became their battle attire.

"As we speak, Yokoteno Gorou should be giving out directives inside the school. We can at last reap the benefits from six months of toil. The 'Golden Snake Head' seems to be mimicking our progress by the way it keeps increasing in power. All that is left is to wait for the completely excavation of the physical artifact. I am the master of the serpent. As long as I can control it, not even a large-scale invasion by the Shimazu will be of any threat."

"..."

"The construction of the 'Destroyed Kingdom' has also gone smoothly. Please take look at this."

Mikuriya's attendant handed a newspaper to Irobe. It was today's morning paper. On one side was a special report with a bold headline about a certain accident in a cement-producing factory in Fukuoka. It occurred yesterday. A sudden explosion in the factory's equipment had left many of the factory workers with serious injuries.

"This is..."

"The cement factory where the accident happened is located at the foothills of Kawaradake. Kawaradake castle used to be the Ootomo's major crossroad."

"Kawaradake castle..."

It was known as the first major crossroad of Buzen. The Ootomo, the Mouri, the Shimazu and other clans had all once fought fiercely for control of this castle. It used to be the battlefield of an intense war. Kawaradake was composed of Ichinotake, Ninotake and Sannotake, and was famous in the past for being a copper mine where many bronze mirrors and other relics had been unearthed. Ichinotake was now a mining field for the lime used in the production of cement, which had reduced half of the mountain to plains. One could no longer see the former beauty of its geographical features. The bare, white rock surface was now exposed, the flat mining side resembled a precipice in its strange, towering appearance.

"Kawaradake used to be a battlefield. The land is soaked with the grudge of the many warriors who died with remorse. If we use the rocks here, which contain large capacities of antipathy, or this copper for the manufacture of a gigantic cannon, what will it be like?"

"So the 'Destroyed Kingdom' is a large cannon...!"

"Correct." Mikuriya smiled. "Seems like the activated grudge exploded in the cement factory. Tachibana Dousetsu-dono is presently on standby at the Kawara shrine, overseeing the construction of the cannon. With the Yamato serpent and the 'Destroyed Kingdom', the Ootomo will be the strongest. The Shimazu and the Oda will be no match for us. Let us strike back at them."

Mikuriya said very confidently, lifting her head resolutely at the horizontal stretch of the Shimabara peninsula on the other side of the sea.
Irobe looked up from the newspaper with a nervous expression.
The whistling of the ferry across the Ariake sea echoed softly.

Book 16 Chapter 12 「鷲の羽」は潰えず

The landscape of Kitagai Rinzan as seen from Aso-gogaku made him temporarily forget that he was in Japan.
Pastureland made up a large portion of the crown of Kitagai Rinzan. The summit of the mountain was flat, but when observed from a distance, one could also see an area shaped like a bare escarpment apart from the yellow grass. It could well be deemed as the Grand Canyon of Japan.
A chain of mountains surrounded it. That said, they were not a mountain range. They were projections formed due to the collapse of the central region, thus it was more accurate to describe them as the edge of a pond. For this reason, the height of mountains around Kitagai Rinzan were almost identical.
However, one had to wonder if this man what America's Grand Canyon was like.

Hearing the room door opening, Nezu Kouichi - Katou Kiyomasa - turned around.

"Did you have a good night's sleep?"

A man and a woman, dressed casually in jeans, asked as they entered the room. They were from the group of bird people that had saved Takaya and Kiyomasa at the Katou shrine the day before. Kiyomasa replied in an unpleasant manner.

"Sure, I had the best sleep of my life thanks to the anesthetic you guys forced on me."

"Glad to hear it."

"What are your motives for imprisoning me in this place?" Kiyomasa pressed his left shoulder. "This insertion of weird objects into someone's body, do you think you can rely on these things to hold me captive?"

"Seems like being a kanshousha proved to be a disadvantage this time around."

A young woman with long hair remarked as she emerged behind the other two and entered the room. That woman was the same one who had accompanied Takaya to the hospital. She was dressed in a pink set of clothes.

"What we've buried into your body is known as the luminous stone Reiseki. It's the same object that was used yesterday to defeat the enemy. It's made by crystallizing the spiritual might of a volcano, and the stone's cooling and heating tendencies are completely under my control. There's no way you can remove it by yourself."

Kiyomasa glared at her hatefully and asked in a calm voice.

"What happened to Uesugi-dono? Is he still alive?"

"...Our benefactor would like to have a word with you."

"What?"

The woman walked to the doorway and made a few gestures. A man much older than any of them entered the room. --He was not one of the bird people.

This man...

Kiyomasa immediately sensed it. --This man was similar to him.

"Well if it isn't Katou Kiyomasa-dono."

The man stated his name clearly.

"Who are you?" Kiyomasa grew more cautious. "You are an onshou I believe. Which clan are you from? State your name."

The man responded to Kiyomasa's sharp questions with a relaxed smile.

"If Kagetora-dono were here, he would immediately know."

"What?"

The man gestured for the bird people to leave the room. They left quietly, leaving the two of them alone. The man spoke.

"The situation yesterday was truly a disaster. I did not expect it to develop into an all-out fight... Fortunately, we drove him away, that hateful Rairyuu. He had been warned against acting on his personal grudge yet he still resorted to such stupid actions. Shimazu-dono probably wasn't very willing to have that walking bomb of a man as his accomplice."

"Who are you! A commander of Shimazu's?!"

"Kiyomasa-dono. You are the general that Taigou-dono raised from young. At the head family, I was taken under Toyotomi's command, and have lived in seclusion ever since, that is why we have never met. But my younger brother was one of members of the Council of Five Elders and you should have met him many times at Osaka castle..."

"Council of Five Elders?"

Kiyomasa looked perplexed, however the man continued in a steady way.

"I was told that you fight for the Oda in the Yami Sengoku. ...As it should be. Taigou-dono was once a general of the Oda."

"That's right! Nobunaga-kou is Taigou-dono's lord. To repay my debt of gratitude to Taigou-dono, I have to serve Nobunaga-kou. Furthermore, Kumamoto has its importance to me as the territory where I was raised."

Kiyomasa said in an intense voice.

"For the sake of those who built that shrine in my honor, the people of Kumamoto who revere me, I, Kiyomasa, had to be resurrected. I absolutely will not allow those vile onryou to run amok in this place!"

"But you have fallen into our hands."

"...!"

The man slid his hand into his pocket and approached Kiyomasa.

"We can kill you or torture you according to our fancies."

"...What do you intend to do with me?"

"I have yet to recompense for the grievances at Itsukushima. Our homeland was invaded by the joint forces of the Oda and Sue Harukata. You are the enemy general. Come to think of it, I should eliminate you this very moment."

"!"

"I have many important questions for you regarding the Oda. So we would like Kiyomasa-dono to be our prisoner for now."

"You...!"

Kiyomasa lunged at him. The man repelled him with an incantation.

"!"

Kiyomasa was flung back against the wall, and crumpled to the floor.

"Damn it...!" Kiyomasa pressed his left shoulder, roaring indignantly. "What happened to Uesugi-dono! Is he still alive!"

"...Are you concerned about him?"

"I have to capture that large tiger alive and present him to Nobunaga-kou!"

"Then I shall tell you that he is dead." The man walked out the room, turned his head back once again and said, "Katou Kiyomasa's victory over a tiger is legendary, no? But now that you're locked inside a cage, there's nothing that you can do."

With that, the man disappeared to the other side of the doorway. Kiyomasa punched the wall, refusing to submit to his predicament.

"Damn it...!"

The man did not state his name. Who was he?

His younger brother was one of the Council of Five Elders? Grievances at Itsukushima? With Sue Harukata?

"!"

Katou Kiyomasa spun around. All of the key words led to one name.

Could he be...!

***

Their hideout was in one of the mountains of Aso-gogaku - the hillside of Mt. Eboushidake. It was a shabby cabin built in the mountain woods. There was a footpath from the cabin to a log house, which looked somewhat like a villa.

Snowflakes were fluttering about outside.

As the man walked down the footpath, a woman came out of the log house. She was the same woman who had appeared earlier, the one who accompanied Takaya to the hospital. She noticed the man and acknowledged him in a courteous manner.

"How is he?"

"He has just woken up. Although he still looks a little disoriented, he can talk now."

"Already awake? How are his injuries?"

"In stable condition. Much better than last night."

The man looked relieved. "I see."

"He still has a slight fever, but with some rest he should recover pretty quickly. Seems like his body is slowly adapting to presence of the buried luminous stone. The power of the Reiseki should be able to hasten his recovery rate. I don't think there should be any problems, seeing as how his body managed to withstand the journey to this place. But just to be safe, try not let him move around too much. ...Also," the woman added, lowering her voice. "It appears that his spiritual strength has become rather weak. The depression afflicting his spirit will affect his recovery, please be cautious when you speak with him."

"...I see." The man's shoulders slumped as he sighed, then he gently nodded. "I understand. I will see him in a moment. I heard there's a young doctor in your company. Thank you. Thank you for your assistance."

"It is our honor to serve you. ...We already have the hospital staff hypnotized, so please do not worry about that. The soiled uniform has been taken to the laundry. If you have any other concerns, please do not hesitate to ask."

"Mmm. Thank you for your kindness."

The woman bowed. Just as she was about to retire, the man called her once again.

"...Is something the matter?"

The man looked as though he was struggling to word his sentence, then he smiled sadly.

"Thank you... for saving him."

The woman smiled and nodded.
Perhaps they had been taught not to probe into the affairs of others. The bird people, including their leader, did not raise questions in an unrelenting manner, or go into the whys and wherefores. There was moderation on their part despite their position as important comrades in this undertaking.
The man entered the log house.

"..."

It was gloomy inside, the curtains were tightly closed. The brightness of the lamp was adjusted such that it would not disturb the patient's sleep. Inside the room, there was a drip, a simple oxygen mask, basically a set of emergency medical apparatus that was placed beside the bed.

Ougi Takaya was lying on the bed. His eyes opened in a lethargic manner. He was not fully alert yet, his half-opened eyes gazed at the ceiling. Takaya showed no reaction to his presence in the room. The man walked to the bedside and looked at Takaya's condition for a short while, however Takaya's eyes did not move, his mouth slightly opened as he looked at the ceiling with a vacant expression. The man gently stooped over, blocking his view of the ceiling and spoke to him.

"Kagetora-dono. ...Do you recognize me? Kagetora-dono."

"..."

"It is me. Kikkawa Motoharu. Kagetora-dono."

His half-opened eyes widened a little, turning towards him slightly. After a while, Takaya replied in a coarse and frail voice.

"...Kik...kawa... Motoharu--...?"

Motoharu nodded.
The son of Mouri Motonari, one of the 'Two Rivers of the Mouri'. This man was the Mouri general who fought with Takaya and the others at Itsukushima two years ago - Kikkawa Motoharu.
But Takaya's reaction was dull, he merely gazed at Motoharu's face in a half-conscious state. It was only natural for him to find him unfamiliar. Motoharu's face was different from before, he had changed his hyouza.

"You have truly endured a lot of suffering, Kagetora-dono. This place is very safe. Please rest without any worry."

"...Nnn..."

Takaya slowly closed his eyes, moist as a result of his fever.
He found it unbearable to look at him.
The injuries he had sustained from the fight with Shimozura Rairyuu were more severe than he expected, fortunately they had acted quickly and managed to save his life. His entire body had received strong blows..., his ribs were broken, while the other wounds required numerous stitches...

Thankfully, we could save him.

He was indeed lucky to still have his four limbs in functional condition after surviving Rairyuu's attack, the Ikkoushuu's mad horse. Motoharu regarded Takaya with sympathy, then his eyes closed heavily, and soon after there was a lonesome expression on his face.

...He has grown thin.

He was much thinner than the last time he saw him.
For the past two years, how has Kagetora lived?

Kikkawa Motoharu was not exorcised during the battle of Itsukushima. After the Yamato sank, Motoharu managed to escape Takaya's Kekkai Choubuku with the sacrifice of his retainers' lives. During Nobunaga's attack, Kuchiba Michiyoshi had protected Motoharu with his own body. Looking at Takaya's face, Motoharu remembered the faces of his men during that time. Kuchiba himself had become Motoharu's shield. When he fell into the water, Kodama Narikata and the others had given up their lives to save him. That was the last he could remember before the chaos knocked him out.
When he came to, Motoharu had found himself in the far west region of the waters of Itsukushima, he alone had been rescued by a vessel belonging to a certain general.

"..."

Motoharu pursed his lips together. He was still alive due to the cooperative efforts of his men. But they had all returned to the place where they belonged to as a result of the purifying light of the Kekkai Choubuku. Motoharu was left behind.

But--...

Motoharu was not the only one left behind on that battlefield...

"...Kagetora-dono."

Motoharu called him once again. He gently repeated his name.

"How do you feel? Do you feel any discomfort?"

"..."

"Are you cold? Do you want anything?"

"Water..." Gasping softly, Takaya requested. "I want some... water..."

Motoharu picked up the glass kettle, a special one only used for the sick, placed on the small table beside the bed. He moved the slender nozzle to Takaya's slightly open lips and gently tilted it, allowing the water to flow into Takaya's mouth slowly. After several mouthfuls, Motoharu lightly wiped away the excess water around Takaya's mouth with a towel. Takaya exhaled through his moist lips, his breath was hot. Opening his eyes, it seemed like Takaya was trying very hard to make sense of his present condition. Motoharu stood up, wanting to warm the furnace by adding new logs of wood.

"Naoe-..."

Motoharu turned back. "What?"

"Is Naoe here..."

"..." Takaya placed his hand on his forehead in an exhausted manner. "I've been... hearing his voice. Until.. now..."

"Did you have a dream?"

"...It was not a dream-..." Takaya closed his eyes, coughing. "If it wasn't his voice, then it must have been a wave of thought... That's... right..."

"Kagetora-dono."

He probably had a dream. Motoharu thought in this way. He had heard of Naoe's death from a certain source. Naoe's weak condition at that time was very unusual, the level of his spiritual power had fallen beneath that of an ordinary person. It was a condition left him incapable of performing kanshou ever again. There was no doubt that he had been purified.

He even hears his voice in his dreams...

Truly pitiful. Motoharu felt this way.

"Where... is this place?"

"Our residence. At Mt Aso."

"Aso..."

"Yes. A very safe place. Please rest here until you have fully recovered from your injuries. They have driven Rairyuu away." Motoharu sat on the whitewood chair and said. "I take it that you've seen the people who descended from the sky. They saved you, they are the members of the Fire sect, who have the ability to fly."

"Fire sect..."

It was familiar to him, but his mind was blank thus he could not remember. Takaya slowly shifted his clouded eyes towards Motoharu.

"Kikkawa... Motoharu..."

"Yes?"

"...Is it... really you?"

"As you can see, I have changed my hyouza, but you should be aware of this. Kagetora-dono. Or perhaps due to the overwhelming number of enemies you've faced, you can't remember me, a rather insignificant character."

"You were not... exorcised..."

Motoharu nodded. Despite hearing these words, they did not sound real at all to Takaya in his current condition. Perhaps he did not even have strength left for vigilance, he only stared at Motoharu's face dully.

"Why... did you save me..."

"Why?"

"I am... the main cause... for the destruction of the Mouri..."

"The one who sank the Yamato was Nobunaga. Perhaps you were the one who killed Takakage and Terumoto, but..." Motoharu lowered his eyes, sighing deeply. "For some unknown reason, I can't bring myself to hate you. Although I hated you during that time to the point where I was close to insanity..."

"..."

"Why is that now?"

Takaya opened his eyes fully.

"You have been able to live to this day."

Motoharu gazed at Takaya with a swelling sense of regret.

"How have you lived for the past two years?"

"Two years..."

"Have you finally managed to somehow overcome the pain of losing Naoe?"

Takaya gasped. "?"

Takaya's reaction was quite different from what he expected, Motoharu was surprised.

"What is the matter?"

"You... said..."

"Ah... I am sorry. How inappropriate of me. I should not be making you talk too much at this moment. Although I have a lot of things to discuss with you, it would be better of me to wait until you are well."

"You said... losing Naoe...?" Takaya asked with a serious expression. "Why do you say that?"

"..."

Motoharu froze. He realized that the complicated feelings in his heart were not the reason he found Takaya's behavior strange.

"Kagetora-dono."

"...You said two years ago..." Takaya was still staring fixedly at Motoharu. "Two years since when?"

"...Two years since the battle of Itsukushima of course. I am truly sorry for what happened to Naoe. Although the Uesugi and the Mouri are enemies, I feel a deep sense of grief over his death."

"His death?" Takaya appeared even more puzzled. "Are you saying that Naoe died?"

Motoharu stared at him. Takaya lowered his eyes and smiled.

"...I don't know who told you this, but that is false information. Naoe... he didn't die at all."

"Kagetora-dono."

"Are you saying that Naoe died at Itsukushima? Who told you that..."

"It was Hagi, Kagetora-dono." Motoharu uttered in a grave tone. "It was Hagi city. Do you not remember?"

"Remember? Remember... what?"

"Do you remember our conversation? When you were about to stamp the written oath, pledging allegiance to the Mouri, with a seal of blood. You backed out because you wanted to return to Naoe, and burned down Hagi city with the power of fire dragons. Then, if I am not mistaken, you went to save Naoe. And the following incident."

Takaya stiffened. Then he slowly raised his head to look up at Motoharu. Motoharu's eyebrows were raised, he earnestly returned Takaya's gaze. Takaya... suddenly felt a fit of uneasiness and turned away.

"Please look into my eyes. Kagetora-dono."

Motoharu grabbed Takaya's shoulders, and said in a tough tone.

"What happened to you? You look strange. Do you not remember what happened at that time?"

Takaya shook his head continuously.

"After that you should have met Terumoto. In order to protect you, Naoe was shot by Terumoto, right? The swarm of fire dragons that followed after were created by you. I certainly heard your cry. The one who destroyed Hagi city with tremendous power was none other than you."

"I don't know...!"

"Kagetora-dono!"

"Fire created by me, what is that? Cry? Destroyed Hagi city? Naoe... was shot?" Takaya shook his head intensely. "Those things... did not happen!"

"Kagetora-dono, you..."

"Absolutely did not...!" Halfway through his sentence, Rairyuu's miserable scar suddenly flashed in Takaya's mind.

--You caused this at Hagi city! Burns resulting from the flames ignited by that monstrous power of yours!

"Absolutely... did not...!"

"Kagetora-dono!"

Motoharu prodded Takaya with more questions despite the latter's confusion.

"Do you really not know! Do you really not remember!"

"Fire... fire....!" Takaya murmured. Sensing a reddish-brown haze slowly coloring his vision, he shut his eyes firmly. Motoharu tightened his grip on his shoulders.

"Is it because of your hurt? Or was it like this before? You just said that Naoe is still alive right? Then where is he now!"

"Yesterday... No, the day before yesterday... I met him at the hotel."

"How can that be!" Motoharu strongly refuted it. "Whom have you taken as Naoe? After the battle of Itsukushima, there has been no sign of Naoe Nobutsuna on the frontline of the Uesugi, all of my sources have confirmed that!"

"Impossible! We have always been fighting together! Always... together..."

Motoharu's face grew stark, he eyed Takaya like he was an abnormal object.

This person...

Motoharu was shocked, he then revisited his understanding of Takaya's personality. As expected, he could not just live on as though everything was fine. He had been so intensely attached to Naoe, almost to a morbid degree, that there was no way Kagetora could just carry on as though nothing had happened after the sudden loss of Naoe.

Has he... gone mad?

Motoharu gulped.

He managed to live on because he has gone mad?

"Kagetora-dono. How much can you remember of the events at Hagi?"

"How much? ...All of it."

"Try recalling it again. The events that took place after we separated. After burning down the house with the power of fire dragons, you went to save Naoe. And then..."

"And then..."

Takaya wanted to remember, he pressed against his temples. He did indeed find Naoe amongst the flames. He found Naoe, and then...

And then...

"You don't remember? Kagetora-dono."

"I... don't... remember...!"

Takaya held his head painfully, shaking it intensely.

"Nnnnn, ...nnnnn!"

"Kagetora-dono!"

"Nnnn...! Ahhhh!"

Takaya could not endure it and cried out. It was not because he could not remember. An extreme unease and oppressive dread had assaulted his senses when he tried to remember. His entire body was drenched in sweat, his heart was pounding rapidly, the agony was unbearable, almost driving him insane.

"I'm scared...!" Takaya shouted in a tearful voice. "No! I'm scared...!"

"Kagetora-dono!"

"Ahhhh!"

Motoharu could not bear to watch anymore, he held Takaya's shoulders in a frenzied manner.

"I understand! Calm down, don't say anymore for now. Wait till your body has fully recovered before talking about it."

"...Ngh... Ngghh..."

But Takaya could not hear him. His eyes were wide open, his two hands pressed against his face, still shaking his head incessantly. Motoharu could feel the shoulders in his grasp trembling violently, it sent a chill down his spine.

How did he end up like this...

Takaya groaned. His lower jaw, about to convulse, clenched.

Is he that Kagetora?

Motoharu was startled.

--Only I have the right to determine whether he lives or dies. Only I have that right!

That Kagetora...

--I won't allow anyone, apart from myself, to have any sort of relationship with him!

Is this your answer?

Motoharu felt as though he had seen something forbidden and covered his mouth with his hand. What on earth was this? On that day, the words and actions of Kagetora that had overwhelmed Motoharu appeared in his mind one after another. Was this the resulting conclusion?

Is this the end of your relationship?

At that time, Kagetora had demonstrated a solid faith that overwhelmed everyone, a dominating flair. He had the impression that the existence of this talented individual was one that encompassed all human emotion, but was it really just madness? Was it because he sought for someone 'who would never yearn for another apart from himself'?

Takaya could not stop shaking. He was in a state of confusion. The shock of seeing something that he did not understand almost made him cry out in madness.

What was that just now...?

Takaya did not know what it was.

Something... that happened at Hagi...?

Motoharu gazed at Takaya solemnly.

Is this retribution...?

Unable to utter a word, Motoharu stared at a distressed Takaya.

***

The powder-like snow swirled through the air in a dance, there was no sign of the snow letting up.
Once he walked out of the log house, Kikkawa Motoharu noticed a man in a white overcoat standing beneath a tree. The man had black hair and snow-white complexion, so fair that one could mistake him for a woman. He smirked a little when Motoharu came out.

"The situation is becoming ever more fascinating, Kikkawa-dono," said the man with red lips. "Uesugi Kagetora. Who knew he was such an ignorant man."

"Did you hear our conversation inside the room?"

Motoharu, who appeared slightly worn out, addressed the man as 'Kousaka-dono.'
Kousaka Masanobu curled his flirtatious lips, facing Motoharu with that usual, arrogant smile.

"Rairyuu, that fool of a man. There was no instruction to attack Kagetora, just to kidnap the woman. Our prospects are looking bleak with an accomplice like him."

"...Indeed. I never expected him to injure Kagetora-dono to this extent."

"My my..." Kousaka slanted his head a little. "You seem very protective of him. Has the great one of the 'Two Rivers' developed feelings for Kagetora-dono?"

"No such thing."

"Hmph. Kagetora-dono himself is no less of an annoyance. It seems like the rumors are true. After Naoe's death, he has taken that Fuuma as Naoe."

"What?" Motoharu looked sharply at Kousaka. "Is that true?"

"Mmm. Perhaps you were not aware this since you've always been with Shimazu, Motoharu-dono, but this is the truth. It's really bewildering. How naive of him, making one feel he is not even worthy of discussion. This is simply like an open invitation to the enemy to take advantage of him."

"..."

"But perhaps, in Kagetora-dono's eyes, someone like Naoe was merely someone who can be easily replaced by anyone. Still, Kagetora-dono's actions were incredibly immature."

His tongue was still as sharp as ever. There had been no information on this man's whereabouts for a period of time but, as one would expect, he did not die at the Suigun Castle. Neither had he changed his vessel, as one could see, his poisonous tongue was still in perfect condition.

"What do you intend to do with Kagetora-dono? Kousaka-dono."

"Nothing will be done. ...But after all the trouble taken to ensnare this tiger, there's no reason to let it go. Isn't he something that would be of value to Shimazu-dono as well? He would make a good receptacle, or a display item for all to see, please see that he fetches a high price."

Kikkawa Motoharu was currently an important guest of Shimazu Yoshihiro. After the naval battle of Itsukushima, Shimazu's ship had saved Motoharu. Thereafter, he had taken command of what was left of the Mouri army at Yukushi under the leadership of the four Shimazu brothers.

"Receptacle you say?"

"Yes. That's right. Receptacle."

Kousaka's smile had hidden implications.

"Shimazu-dono is looking for a receptacle and isn't that fierce tiger just perfect?"

"...But..."

"In any case, Kagetora-dono will return to the Hojou and that will make him an ally of ours. There shouldn't be any problems."

"Are you planning to persuade him? I don't believe Kagetora-dono will so easily yield to us. At Hagi city, his faith in Kenshin remained unshakable, and thus rejected our terms. I don't think he will surrender because of so small a matter."

"Don't worry about that. I have a good idea."

"A good idea?"

"There's no reason to turn a blind eye when opportunity presents itself. Let us use that Fuuma a little shall we. If he believes that Naoe isn't dead, then good. Considering the present circumstance, Kagetora-dono will easily fall into our trap. Now is our chance to make him leave the Uesugi."

The good-looking tactician stretched his slender fingers into the air, catching a falling snowflake with the tip of his finger.

"Exploiting the enemy's weakness is our specialty. Furthermore, this is something they brought upon themselves. Kagetora-dono will have nothing to say."

"Are you going to tell him that rumor?" Motoharu asked seriously. "But it's just a rumor at the end of the day. How much of it will Kagetora-dono believe?"

"He will definitely believe it to be true. ...Moreover, it's not a completely baseless rumor."

"What?"

Kousaka smirked. "Kagetora-dono said that he 'heard his voice calling out to him' in a dream, didn't he? That is the truth. While Kagetora-dono was unconscious, someone did continuously transmit a wave of thought to him."

"Really? Who was it?"

Kousaka did not say out the person's name. However, he truly found it interesting. Kousaka snickered to himself, taking extreme delight in this discovery that he had made.

"Don't worry about it for now. Let's get back to discussing work. If the people of the Fire sect have brought the head of Kihachi here, all that's left is to wait for the arrival of Asara." The handsome strategist said, squinting. "Very soon we shall be able to witness a splendid show at Aso."

Motoharu stared at Kousaka with a nervous expression.

"Do you really feel we can control a weapon that surpasses the 'Yamato' in power? Kousaka-dono."

"We have an extremely reliable ultra-sensor in the form of Kagetora-dono at our disposable, don't we? Not even the Demon King Nobunaga will be able to move this time. Let us destroy him together. Motoharu-dono." Kousaka smiled. "The same can be said for Kenshin and his lackeys."

Snow began to blur their view, the mountains of Aso appeared to be cloaked in white.

It took them an hour to reach Aso by car. Miike Tetsuya was seated in the front passenger seat as Chiaki Shuuhei drove down the National Highway 57 towards Tetsuya's hometown of Aso.

The topography of Aso was rather interesting. There were seven towns and villages situated within the rim of the volcanic crater, which measured 128km in circumference. Right in the middle of this caldera stood a group of towering volcanic mounts that formed what was known as the Aso-gogaku. Many people had the misconception that the name Aso referred to these famous mountains, but in truth, the entire area including the outer rim of the crater was known as Mt. Aso. In the past, there used to be a cluster of active volcanoes named Mt. Aso. But a massive volcanic eruption, which emitted 400 tons of lava, resulted in a vacuous subterranean that caused the cone of the volcanic mountain to collapse, transforming into what was now known as the Aso volcanic crater.

The volcanic rim encircling the caldera had only one opening called the Tateno barranco. Both the National Highway 57 and the JR bus line passed through the Tateno valley as a point of entry.

Tetsuya was uncommunicative throughout the entire journey. News of the incident at the Katou shrine was now being broadcast on the radio. Although Chiaki was worried about Takaya's condition, the only thing he could do at the moment was to settle the current matter to the best of his ability. Chiaki stepped on the accelerator.

He turned left at the intersection in front of the JR Houhi line's Aso station, entering a narrow lane that led to a village. They had reached Yakuinbaru, Tetsuya's hometown. Not long after passing through several fields of crops via that street, they saw the residence of Tetsuya's granduncle, Miike Tatsuya.

Once the vehicle stopped in the narrow courtyard, the family dog began to bark ferociously. The rain shield on the windows were already closed, it was dark. However on hearing the sound of the car, someone came out of the front door.

"What's wrong, Tetsuya!"

His granduncle was very surprised at Tetsuya's abrupt return. Usually, Tetsuya would not even call unless there was trouble yet here he was back at his old residence so unexpectedly that the elderly couple was shocked.

"Did something happen! Tetsuya! Without even informing us, you..."

Tetsuya got out of the car with a disgusted look on his face.

"That is...?"

"A teacher from school."

Tetsuya coldly replied. His granduncle, assuming that Tetsuya had stirred up another disaster at school, lowered his head before Chiaki all of sudden.

"O-Oh, sensei. I'm sorry you had to take the trouble to travel all this distance at such an hour. Please, come in. Tetsuya! What have you done this time...!"

"You got it wrong, Granduncle. It's not what you think it is."

Tetsuya had a frightening look on his face.

"There's something I must know."

"Something you must know?"

"Where is Hokage?"

Chiaki and Tetsuya saw the abrupt change in his granduncle's facial expression.

"You know this, right? Granduncle. Where is Hokage now? If you know, then tell me. Where's Hokage!"

"Tetsuya...!"

"A person's life is at stake here! Granduncle, tell me! Where's Hokage? Where is she now!"

"A person's life is at stake?"

His granduncle looked at Chiaki uneasily. Chiaki nodded.

"He speaks the truth. This is urgent. If you know anything, please tell me. Where is Hokage now?"

"...This..." His granduncle shook his head in confusion. "I don't know."

"What?"

"We don't know anything. We really don't know anything. Even if we knew, as hafuri, we are not allowed to reveal information to anyone."

Tetsuya was wide-eyed like a terrier.

"The members of the head family know, right?"

"Tetsuya!"

"I get it! I just have to go and ask Uncle then! I'm going to ask him! Sensei, let's go!"

"Wait a minute, Tetsuya!"

Tetsuya forcefully grabbed Chiaki's arm, ignoring his granduncle's attempt to stop him and got into the car. They drove out the gate, leaving his granduncle who was still crying out. Tetsuya, seated in the front passenger seat, could not stop biting his fingernails in an irritated manner.

"You saw that right, sensei. Just like that. The members of the branch family are like retainers of the head family or something, yet so secretive about it. It's such a disgusting family."

"What's... a hafuri?"

"It's the entire clan of the family. That's what the Miike family calls it."

"..."

"Hafuri of the Miike family must devote themselves, heart and soul, to the head family. The head family is like the master. If the master says 'do not speak of it', they will bite their tongues and not dare utter a word. That's the sort of family they are."

This is really strange...

The customs associated with this practice of having head and branch families differed with territory, some of which were still firmly rooted in existence. However, this Miike family seemed especially conservative. Perhaps conservative did not accurately describe their ways... Nevermind Asara, this family was a riddle in itself.

The outline of the volcanic rim was clearly illuminated by the moonlight. They passed through the center of the rural district and turned right, coming to a residence surrounded by a long hedge. It was the home of the Miike head family.
Within the wide courtyard was a storehouse and what appeared to be a branch temple. A residence befitting of a head family, especially with its imposing style of construct.

The two of them got out of the car nervously.

***

The servants had invited them in and they had been waiting for quite a while. The house belonged to a very traditional farm family. The entrance was made of clay, there was no veranda, beige wooden doors were used to separate the rooms instead of paper ones and the pan-black coloration of the wooden pillars felt age-old. There were approximately 10 rooms in the house. Considering how old-fashioned the style of the domicile was, this place must have been the residence of the former village chief.

Chiaki and Tetsuya had been taken to a spacious room covering an area of approximately 20 tatami mats. There was only one kerosene heater at one corner of the room. Even so, the air had been piercing cold when they entered. Beside Chiaki, Tetsuya remained nervous. His uncle, Miike Haruya, was the leader of the head family. One would generally wonder why the need to be so nervous over visiting a relative, an uncle, but the Miike family was not ordinary.

"Damn... it..."

Tetsuya was seated in a kneeling position; his fists were trembling slightly on his knees. Despite that, his eyes were bright.

Is he that frightening a person?

The door slid open, a man in kimono entered.
Tetsuya was startled; he straightened his back.
It was his uncle, Miike Haruya. He was around 45 years of age and the complete opposite of what Chiaki expected, leaving him a little surprised. The deep blue kimono, possibly what he usually wore on a daily basis, did not have the slightest fold or crease and the lapels were perfectly straight. No hint of the boorishness of the head of a peasant family. He had an intellectual manner, as well as a distinctive look of dignity, rather befitting of his status as the master of an old family.

This person...

Was going to be a handful. Chiaki groaned in his heart.

"You look like you are doing well, Tetsuya."

Haruya spoke. Tetsuya's eyes still had that glint of defiance as he bowed respectfully.

"...It has been a while."

"You didn't visit during the New Year. And I was told that you haven't been practicing Kagura. How can you let this be? Studying Kagura is one of the duties of a hafuri. I was going to have you dance this year."

"..."

It appeared that despite his obedience, Tetsuya's eyes were full of contempt.

"And this is?"

"A teacher from Kojou High." Chiaki answered the question himself and stated his name. "I'm Chiaki Shuuhei."

"Oh, a teacher."

"Sorry for the intrusion at this hour. Due to a matter that requires immediate counsel..."

"It concerns Hokage, reikami."

Tetsuya addressed his uncle in this way. He went straight to the point.

"Please tell me where Hokage is! Tell me where she is!"

Haruya's eyebrows quivered a little. "What is going on?"

Chiaki gave the letter of threat and bundle of hair to Haruya, who opened the letter and read its contents calmly. Tetsuya's eyes were glued on his uncle.

"It's like this. Somebody sent these items to Tetsuya-kun."

"..."

"The kidnapped girl, Inaba Akemi, is his classmate. She didn't return home and is now missing. Also, there are witnesses who can attest to the fact that she was taken away at the Katou shrine."

"..."

"I also found this at the shrine." Tetsuya took out the keychain. "It's Inaba alright. Inaba has really been kidnapped! If I don't take Hokage there, Inaba'll really be in danger!"

His uncle seemed unfazed. The expression in his eyes grew even sharper, he looked up.

"Have you reported this to the police?"

"No, not yet..."

"I see..." Haruya's reply was very succinct. "I can't agree to this."

Tetsuya glared at him furiously. Haruya looked indifferent and handed the letter back to Chiaki.

"Although I do not know who is responsible for this, there's no need to pay any attention to this sort of practical joke."

"This isn't a practical joke!" Tetsuya yelled in a coarse voice. "Inaba has really been kidnapped! She might even be killed! If Hokage isn't taken there...!"

"How would you know?"

"They know about Asara, this is in no way ordinary. Only the Miike family should know about this, right! The one who kidnapped Inaba must've been the same person who destroyed the Katou shrine! That's right, sensei! Weren't they the same guys who messed up Ougi!"

Chiaki was wide-eyed, surprised by Tetsuya's keen intuition.

"Miike..."

"I don't know who is behind this but it's definitely not a practical joke! If we don't take Hokage there, Inaba will really be killed! She'll be killed, Uncle!"

"...If that's the case, all the more reason not to respond to this."

Tetsuya gasped. Haruya gazed at him with half-open eyes and said in an exceedingly, strict voice.

"If it is as you say, then all the more reason why I can't tell you where Hokage is. Are you are planning to bow to their threat and endanger Asara? There's no way I can agree to this."

"Inaba is also Hokage's friend! Does it not matter if Inaba dies!"

"This has nothing to do with our family."

Tetsuya could not tolerate his cold way of speaking, leaving no room for negotiation. He gnashed his teeth in anger and stared at Haruya fiercely, as though he wanted to impale him. He asked hatefully,

"Is Kihachi-sama more important than a living person?"

"Tetsuya."

"What is with this family! What did you say Hokage was again! Why must you hide Hokage!"

"..."

"Are you planning to marry Hokage off to Kihachi-sama? We're not living in a freaking folklore. Still regarding superstitions as fact, allowing yourselves to be dominated by fear, are you all idiots! Didn't you once set out for the city enthusiastically to modernize yourself!"

Chiaki was silent for the moment, peering at Haruya's reaction. But Haruya did not even raise an eyebrow at Tetsuya's insolence. Chiaki slowly opened his mouth.

"Who hid Hokage?"

"..."

"Don't tell me you people anticipated these events from the very start?"

Haruya twitched, he looked up.

"! That's impossible...!" Tetsuya approached his uncle in shock. "Is that true? Uncle. You know of someone who covets Hokage so..."

"It has nothing to do with you two."

"How can it have nothing to do with us!"

Tetsuya snarled, slapping the tatami mat.

"Hokage is my sister! How can it have nothing to do with me! Who is planning to snipe Hokage and for what reason? Why is there such a thing! What's going on with this family!"

Due to his excessive distress, Tetsuya's voice was choking. Chiaki patted his shoulder, allowing him to calm down. But the head of the Miike family remained composed. Without saying a word, he stuck his hands into the sleeves of his kimono and sat down quietly.

"Miike-san."

"...I can't tell you where Hokage is. This is the reikami's answer. If you understand now, please leave."

Tetsuya looked at his uncle in a paralyzed manner. Haruya nodded formally at Chiaki and stood up. Then he abandoned Tetsuya, who was at a loss, and left the room.

"...Uncle...."

Chiaki immediately stood up, he went after Haruya.

"Please leave." Haruya was extremely cold to Chiaki as well. "There isn't any other matter to discuss, is there?"

"The so-called Princess Asara, what is that exactly?"

"..."

"If we are not clear on this, we can't take any action. What is Kihachi-sama referring to? Does it have something to do with the bonfire deity?"

"I'm not obligated to explain them to you."

"Inaba is my student. I can't just leave things as it is. Please tell me of Hokage's whereabouts."

"This has nothing to do with our family."

"If you intend to stay silent, then so be it. But with this sort of useless struggle, the other party will merely resort to even more despicable methods."

Haruya's shoulders jumped. This was the first time he showed any sign of a reaction. Haruya turned around and looked at Chiaki.

"Do you know who the other party is?"

Chiaki nodded. "This is something where the police won't be of any use. Am I correct?"

"Who are you?"

"How about a deal? Miike-san. You have a secret that you must protect even if it means the death of a person. But the man who wrote that letter is a vile person who will stop at nothing, fair means or foul, to get what he wants. If possible, I'm willing to help you, Miike-san. Let me be responsible for protecting Hokage. Once again, can you please tell me her whereabouts?"

"Foolish words."

"Well this is the last card I have to play."

Haruya stared at Chiaki. Chiaki was calm, with a look that indicated his seriousness, he gazed back at him, continuing in a challenging tone.

"...We will not leave until you promise us this."

***

It had turned into a contest of endurance. Apparently, Haruya had instructed the family members to ignore them and so they did not bother them at all. The two of them just sat in the wide, quiet room in this way. The heater was taken way. As night approached, the temperature in the room dropped to an extremely low degree. Despite wearing coats, it was so cold that they were shivering. But Tetsuya's fists were not trembling because of the cold.

"This family..." Tetsuya groaned quietly, over and over again. "I must sever all ties with this sort of family..."

"Miike."

"I must find my own independence immediately... break off all ties with them as soon as possible."

The people of this family had been rather indifferent to Tetsuya ever since they arrived. And it seemed as though the reason for this was not limited to the fact that Tetsuya was a member of the branch family...

Guess that's the way with rural areas.

Chiaki found it intolerable. Was it because the parental system of the feudal era was still so deeply entrenched in this day and age?

Chiaki had long severed all communication with his family and relatives, but for someone like Tetsuya, a relationship as tedious as this was probably frustrating to an unbearable degree. He had watched Irobe and the rest live through a similar system for the past 400 years, and he was always bewildered and in admiration of their ability to endure this sort of cage.

It's probably very restricting.

Chiaki sympathized with Tetsuya. This place was the reason he became a problematic student. He looked at his watch. The pointer was about to reach the number one. Chiaki shifted his thoughts back to the problem at hand.

Can't afford to go easy on them anymore.

They had a 48 hour limit. By midnight of the day after tomorrow, they have to take Hokage there.

Let's wait till morning.

If Haruya was not going to change his mind by the next morning, he would have no choice. Chiaki was going to use his cheat card.

I'll use hypnosis to make him confess.

Morning had come and Tetsuya was fast asleep on the floor, possibly due to exhaustion. Chiaki could hear the birds chirping, but the surroundings were still shrouded in darkness. The clock showed 5:30.

"?"

Right at this moment, there was movement from one of the inner rooms, someone had gone outside. It sounded like someone had walked out the main entrance. Chiaki stood up and followed it. Just as he had expected, it was Haruya.
Haruya had gone out alone, proceeding to the path beside the paddy field.

Where is he going?

He was holding what seemed to be a rope made by twisting many strands of straw together. He smelt something burning and realized that there was a weak flame at the end of the rope. The morning sun began to dye the eastern horizon red. Although it was extremely cold, the air was particularly fresh, and only the vigorous chorus of the chirping birds could be heard everywhere. On the other side of the paddy field that stretched into the distant, stood the majestic Aso-gogaku in a horizontal arrangement.

Haruya walked along the path not far from the center of the village, coming to a shrine. It was a small shrine, which looked more like an ancestral hall, situated far beyond the torii.

Shimomiya. That was written on the torii.

Haruya came to the front of the shrine, took the burning straw rope in his hand, faced the shrine and performed the formalities of worship.

"..."

Chiaki watched him quietly. Haruya calmly straightened his back. Without turning around, he spoke.

"As the head of the Miike family, I have to come here every morning to pray."

Haruya had not turned back once, but apparently he knew that Chiaki had been following him. Chiaki nodded.

"That fire on the straw rope..?"

"The fire lighted during the Hi-taki no Shinji." Haruya replied, turning to face Chiaki. "On the day of the Yado, the Miike family will receive this fire and use it as a goshinka in the kamidana of the household for the rest of the year. In our daily worship, we have to bring this fire along in our prayer."

"Is this Shimomiya? The shrine where you perform the Hi-taki no Shinji for the deity. It's much smaller than I expected."

"The bonfire hall is on the other side of the road. The chosen bonfire maiden will be enclosed there for 60 days, keeping the fire alive for the God of Frost."

Chiaki replied, "I see."

He stuck his hands in his pockets and walked up.

"That's one strange practice. Speaking of the grand shrine in this region, Aso shrine, is it in any way related to the 'God of Frost'?"

"They are more than just related," Haruya smiled for the first time. "If not for the Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto, this shrine would not even exist. Because Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto himself constructed this shrine."

"What?"

"Another name for Shimomiya is Shimo Palace. The significance of the Hi-taki no Shinji is to prevent the enshrined deity from feeling cold and to prevent the frost from blighting the crops on the earth, thus we warm Him by kindling a fire, but..."

Haruya explained, the smile on his lips disappeared.

"The true objective of this festival is to protect the rice harvest from the evil doings of onryou."

Chiaki frowned. "Evil doings of onryou...?"

"Correct. The deity enshrined in the Shimomiya is actually the onryou, Kihachi, who was beheaded by Aso shrine's Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto."

Haruya calmly began to unravel information.

Kihachi was also known as 'Kihachi boushi'.
He was a man of honor and courage in the ancient times, as well as a retainer to Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto. Legend has it that Kihachi possessed astonishing strength and force. He followed Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto, famed for being the best in Japanese archery, and was responsible for retrieving arrows. Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto always stood on one of the volcanic cones of Oujoudake in the center of Aso, faced the 'matoishi' situated at the biseki of the area and fired arrows. Occasionally, the arrows would go off-course and the swift Kihachi would retrieve it. On one occasion, he had run to and fro ninety-nine times, and by the hundredth time he was exhausted and kicked that last arrow back to Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto.

This angered Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto. As Kihachi had rashly mishandled Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto's precious equipment, the latter flew into an uncontrollable rage (ridiculous as it may be). Kihachi then fled with Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto on his heels. After Kihachi's fierce show of resistance, Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto eventually chopped his head off. However, no matter how many times Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto had him decapitated, Kihachi's head reattached itself to the body. Therefore, Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto had to chop his body into pieces before Kihachi finally died. Kihachi's decapitated head then flew to a high altitude.

Henceforth, Kihachi's head in the sky became an onryou who hated Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto, blighted the crops with frost and caused them to wither. The people could not survive with the loss of their crops, thus to resolve this complication, Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto built a shrine in the center of Aso-dani to appease Kihachi's spirit, and entreated Kihachi to descend to earth. Kihachi's spirit had descended and was enshrined as Shimomiya, and from then on, no longer damaged the crops with frost. --This was the origin of the Shimo shrine.

The Hi-taki no Shinji served to prevent Kihachi's head from freezing (and feeling pain) due to the cold, which would spark mischief, hence the need to warm him.

"Kihachi... Is that the Kihachi-sama you guys have been talking about?"

In the cold air, which was freezing his cheeks, Chiaki's breath came out in white puffs.

"But that doesn't really explain anything. So where does your family stand in this matter? You people look more than just shrine parishioners."

"..."

Haruya did not answer that question. Chiaki pondered for a moment.

"Tetsuya said that you people come from the Asara lineage. Who is this Princess Asara?"

"Princess Asara was originally the wife of Kihachi."

"Wife?"

"Yes."

Haruya said, lightly nudging the coals in front of the straw.

"You have probably heard of a place in Aso known as Takachiho. It's famous because that was where the grandchild of Amaterasu descended from the heavens. In the legend associated with that place, Kihachi was an evil bandit."

"..."

"Princess Asara was forcefully taken as a wife by that evil bandit and passed her days in a living death. But one day, a great person called Mikenu no Mikoto appeared before Princess Asara, who had been weeping since dawn."

"Mikenu no Mikoto..."

"Yes. He's the brother of Jinmu Tennou and the main enshrined deity of the Takachiho shrine. In order to help Princess Asara, Mikenu no Mikoto decided to banish Kihachi."

But Kihachi was not so easily dealt with. No matter how many times he was beheaded, he resurrected himself. Mikenu no Mikoto thus defeated Kihachi together with a skilled fighter named Tanabe Shigetaka. They chopped his body into pieces and buried them underground, so that he could not recover. It was said that the burial mounds with the parts of Kihachi's body could be found in many places in Takachiho. The sword Mikenu no Mikoto had used to kill Kihachi was known as 'Onikirimaru', the treasure of the Takachiho shrine.

Mikenu no Mikoto then married Princess Asara and lived in happiness to the end of their days.

"Asara lineage... Do you mean to say that you are the descendants of Princess Asara?"

"They say that our ancestors were the children of Princess Asara and Mikenu no Mikoto..."

"...!" Chiaki stared at him. "Wh..at...!"

"You wish to say that it's impossible right?"

"..."

Haruya continued in a calm manner.

"In order to fulfill a 'certain wish' of Princess Asara, our lineage has continued for several hundreds of years in this way. I am the head of the 98th generation. Our history can even compare with the generations of priests of the Aso shrine and the Aso family. ...The Miike family is also known as the 'inner Aso family'."

Haruya slowly folded his arms, calmly gazing at the horizontal stretch of the Aso-gogaku in the southern direction.

"Inner... Aso family...?"

"Yes. Miike refers to 'Miike' [Note: Same pronunciation, different kanji]. A reference to the crater of Nakadake."

Haruya said, pointing at the white smoke that could be seen in sparse amounts near the center of the gogaku.

"Mingling with the clouds and mist blurs its appearance, but you can still see that it's there, right? Nakadake, still volcanically active to this day. In the past, that crater was regarded as a spiritual lake or 'Miike'. The crater looked like a pond as it accumulated rainwater, and was thus named as such. That's where the name of the Miike family originated from."

"What do you mean by that?"

"The Miike family has the obligation of guarding the crater from the Aso shrine. ...In other words, the guardians who observe the activity of Nakadake."

Haruya asked Chiaki, "Do you know why?" Chiaki shook his head, Haruya lowered his head a little and explained.

"Because there is a longstanding belief that Asara's offspring will oversee the eruptions of Nakadake."

"..." Chiaki was silent for a while. "Why..."

"Kihachi's grudge is the cause of Nakadake's eruptions. Because Asara used to be 'Kihachi's wife'."

With this Haruya closed his mouth. He said that Asara was Kihachi's wife. But weren't the ancestors of the Miike family the children of Asara and Mikenu no Mikoto?

So what's going on here...?

He also mentioned that they were here to fulfill a certain wish of Asara's. What was that wish?

--For the sake of Kihachi-sama, the birth of Asara is a must.

The words of Tetsuya's paternal grandmother. Was that somehow related to 'Asara's wish'? The descendants of Mikenu no Mikoto respectfully addressed the evil being that their ancestor had personally eliminated as 'Kihachi-sama'. Chiaki was not convinced that they were merely afraid of onryou mischief.

What's really going on inside the Miike family?

But he did not intend to explain matters any further. Miike Haruya seemed like he was in a prayer, he lowered his head, then looked at Chiaki intently.

"You said you wanted to help us. Said that you would protect Hokage..."

"Yeah..." Chiaki livened up, straightening his back. "And that isn't just idle talk. As long as you help us recover Inaba."

"Please show me the evidence."

Haruya stated and took out a protective talisman. The form of the Great Dipper and a purification shrine was drawn on the talisman. Haruya moved the coals onto the divine talisman, then unexpectedly tossed the burning talisman at Chiaki.

"...!"

Boom!

With that sound, Chiaki's body was instantly engulfed in huge, blue flames. It was not hot at all. In a moment, the flames, together with the talisman, disappeared altogether.

"I see..." Haruya was a little startled. This was the first time he saw someone with the ability to raise such astonishing flames.

"Truly amazing. Looks like you have a considerable amount of spiritual power. Who are you exactly?"

"What was that just now?"

"Flames that are kindled in response to one's spiritual power. The spiritual power that you have serve as the fuel to ignite the flames. Very impressive."

"Of course." Chiaki smiled pridefully, then uttered in a menacing tone. "Whoever the enemy is, I'll be able to protect the young lady of your family. There are very few people on this earth who can put up a fight with this old man."

"You can really protect Hokage, right?" Haruya sought verification with a solemn expression. "No matter who the enemy is, you can really protect her, right?"

His overly earnest expression raised doubts in Chiaki. It was obvious from Haruya's appearance that he knew who the 'enemy' was. Chiaki did not believe the enemy was an onshou. If that was the case...

A third party...?

Between the onshou and the Miike family.

Is he referring to that guy?

The one who told the onshou about Princess Asara and the secret of the Miike family. Could it be that Haruya knew who the culprit was? Chiaki's face relaxed.

In short, for the sake of Inaba, he had to pose as Miike Hokage's bodyguard even if it was just a bluff.

"Don't worry. Protecting girls is my forte, chief."

Chiaki feigned a look of brimming confidence, crossing his arms in front of his chest.

"Although I'm getting more confused the more I hear about this, I'll first make a deal with you, I promise not to let any harm come to Miike Hokage. ...Please tell me where she is then, Miike-san."

"That is fine, but before that," Miike Haruya said in a low voice. "There's something I must first investigate."

"Something you have to investigate? What is it?"

"I have to go to the Aso shrine." Haruya looked towards the east where the Aso shrine was situated. "This is very important. We have to first verify if the 'Golden Snake Head' is still inside the Aso shrine."

"Golden... Snake Head...?"

"Yes. If it's no longer there, then this situation will need immediate attention."

Miike Haruya appeared somber, he said to Chiaki.

"Please come with me. Chiaki-sensei."

The cold morning wind blew at Chiaki's coat he as focused his strength, staring down in the direction of the Aso shrine.
